Gun Thread: Sunday May 19th Edition!

051924 cal scaled.jpg

Howdy, Y'all! Welcome to the wondrously fabulous Gun Thread! As always, I want to thank all of our regulars for being here week in and week out, and also offer a bigly Gun Thread welcome to any newcomers who may be joining us tonight. Howdy and thank you for stopping by! I hope you find our wacky conversation on the subject of guns 'n shooting both enjoyable and informative. You are always welcome to lurk in the shadows of shame, but I'd like to invite you to jump into the conversation, say howdy, and tell us what kind of shooting you like to do!

Holy Shitballs! How in the ever-loving hell did it get to be Sunday May 19th? Next thing you know it will be Sunday May 25th, and then June! Oh, the humanity!

Not much happening in WeaselWorld this weekend, it's overcast and rainy and generally pretty dismal. We have new neighbors moving in next door so I will probably occupy myself by peeking thru the curtains and watching them unload stuff from their cars, one of which is a Prius, so I suppose I will have my work cut out for me. I wonder if living next door to Weasel was disclosed by the sellers or perhaps even turned up in the title search?

With that, step into the dojo and let's get to the gun stuff below, shall we?

******

FUNdamentals
OK, show of hands. Who has been to the range and tried the focusing on fundamentals thing I won't shut up about?

Q: Speaking of that Weasel, are you ever going to shut up about it?
A: No.

I'm not going to shut up about it because it works, people. I am quite happy to announce that some of all y'all have contacted me, eyes wide with wonderment, to report they have tried the focus elements of WeaselDoctrine and to their surprise and amazement are beginning to see tangible results! Honest to goodness real, observable, measurable and most importantly improved results!

I told you so.

This isn't rocket surgery, people. It's really just common sense. For any complex task, determine the component parts and focus on each of those individually. The focus is not on the objective of shooting small groups, but rather on mastering the fundamentals which allow the objective to occur naturally as a consequence of proper shot execution. It's not easy and it takes time plus a lot of dedicated effort, but it works.

Give it a try.

Katana Update
Long-time readers will recall in early May 2021 I included the following in the Gun Thread:

***

051924 Samurai-and-katana scaled.jpg

Weasel, That ain't a gun
Why yes, yes it's not. It's not a gun, it's a sword! A katana to be precise.

051924 parts-of-a-katana-samurai-swords scaled.jpg

I have been watching a bunch of restoration videos on YouTube lately, covering everything from Swiss watches to antique bench vises (viceii?), when it occurred to me I have an item that could use some TLC. It's a sword handed down to me by my Dad and it's been in the family longer than I have. Since I have had it I've always meant to have it looked over. The story of how he acquired it isn't particularly exciting. In the late 1940s he was working at a service station as a teen and had to take the back seat out of a customer's car for some reason. The sword was under the seat, the customer wasn't interested in it, and gave it to my dad. That's it. That's the story. No hail of gunfire and samurai charge and taking it off a dead Jap on Iwo Jima or anything. Frankly, it's a little anticlimactic, but perfectly normal for my ancestors who are a notorious bunch of criminals, liars and cowardly scoundrels. Tennoheika Banzai!

051924 katana 2 scaled.jpg

So I started doing some research. I could tell it was old, and of the Japanese samurai katana style, but that's all I knew. I quickly found out that the rabbit hole for swords is not only every bit as deep as it is for guns, but much, much deeper. Bigly deep. I began by poking around on the internet and learning what I could about how they were made, some of their history, and most importantly how to take proper care of them. The basic rules I have found are don't touch it, keep it oiled, and for Pete's sake, don't try and clean it or 'sharpen' it yourself!

051924 katana 3 scaled.jpg

Until he other day, the sword was sporting an obviously unoriginal handle, or tsuka, which I have since removed to see if the tang (nakago) is signed. Although it's not signed by the maker that I can tell, it does have a series of faint crosshatched file marks on both sides in the Higaki Yasuri pattern. Other than that, it's in the same shape as when my Dad received it about 70 years ago.

There are very few people (togishi) in the U.S. who hand polish swords. By hand. As in, not with machines. I managed to find one of them, sent a bunch of photos of the blade, and asked for advice regarding my options. They tentatively identified the sword as from the Mino School and estimate it's age at, get this, 400 years or older. I knew it was cool, and old, but 400 years old? Holy crap! I thought my '03 Springfield made in 1909 was old! Just to make sure, I have since had the assessment confirmed by others who specialize in the field of Japanese sword making. That's the good news.

The bad news, is I need to have it polished, and to have that done by an expert ain't cheap. The correct hand polish is a process that takes weeks of work to perform, costs around $100 per inch, and the wait list is measured in years for a top polisher to begin work. I also need to have a new custom shira-saya, or storage handle and scabbard mounting made for it. What the hell, right? It's only money, and what am I going to do, start buying guns and ammo?

So I'm on the wait list, now currently estimated at 23 months. When it's my turn I box it up and send it to the West coast. The polisher I've chosen seems confident the blade will restore nicely, as the oxidation is all on the surface and has not pitted the steel. I've given it a nice protective coat of oil, and have promised myself to treat it a little more respectfully now that I know it's age. I have no idea what it's worth, and frankly do not really care. I'm going to have it restored to it's former head-lopping glory in the traditional way because I think it's the right thing to do. There are other much cheaper and faster alternatives for shining it up, but someone who doesn't know what they are doing can easily ruin a blade. Since Weasel-san is now pretty much a samurai warrior, it needs to be done properly and in the ancient manner.

What would you do? Git 'er done with a grinder yourself, or honor the blade, its maker, and all of its previous owners?

***

May 2024 Update!
Fast forward to last week, when my togishi (sword polisher) contacted me to let me know my long wait was over and he is ready for me to ship the blade to him. I have opted for a full polish in the traditional method which as I indicated earlier can take two or three weeks to accomplish using only hand stones sourced from Japan. To say I am excited to have this done is an understatement, and I consider myself very fortunate to have found the right person to do the work and also to have the means to have it treated properly and quite frankly, respectfully.

In Japan, swordsmithing and polishing are considered sacred arts. A long time ago someone went to a lot of effort to make the blade, and it was then passed down through the generations until it landed in my lap. The story of its journey has been lost, but out of respect for the maker and all those who have owned it over several hundred years, I plan to take care of it in the very best way I can. I sort of feel like I have a responsibility now that it's in my hands. Does that make any sense at all? Anyhow, my togishi has promised more information once he is able to personally examine the blade and maker's marks and I will pass that along as well as photos of the finished product.

Here is a video I found of the traditional process for polishing. Can you imagine doing this for two weeks?

So what would you do? Would you spend the money to have it restored traditionally or look for a more economic solution? Alternatively, would you simply wipe it with oil periodically and call it good? Please let me know in the comments!

2024 NoVAMoMe

051924 hello-moron scaled.jpg

Note: One of the great joys of NoVAMoMe season, at least for me, is being able to cut and paste the entire block of text below and haranguing you to register for the event. Have you registered? Are you focusing on the fundamentals of registration?

Alright, guys and gals, the long awaited and highly anticipated opening of 2024 NoVAMoMe registration is upon us! That's right, registration for the event of the season is open, which means you can register to attend! You see, in order to attend, you must first register, and then wait for June 8th, and then attend! It's really more of an application to attend based on whether we like you or not, but what have you got to lose?!

Q: Weasel, your world frightens and confuses us. How do we, how do you say, register for the NoVAMoMe?
A: Welp, it's pretty darn easy!

First, check your calendars for June 8th, 2024, and cancel anything already planned. Good so far? Then simply send an email to WeaselBell Productions expressing your interest, then sit back and anxiously wait for a reply. Our pal and most delightful 'ette and MoMe Hostess Extraordinaire bluebell will review your application and relevant permanent record notations to decide if you're NoVAMoMe material. If you're one of the chosen, you'll get a reply with a link and secret password to the registration site containing all the pertinent details. Look these over and complete the simple registration form, following the PayPal link provided at the end of the form to make your payment. The $30 pp fee covers appetizers, dinner (BBQ Chicken, hamburdogs, sides, and dessert) plus an unlimited amount of fun! Since we must guarantee a headcount to the caterer, all registrations must be made online by May 26th. We are not accepting payment for registration at the door. You do not need a PayPal account to register and can pay with any major credit card.

A NoVAMoMe PSA from our pal bluebell

Hi folks - just a quick PSA. If you write for info about the MoMe, please give us a few words in the body of the email just so I know you are a Moron and not a spammer (moron). I do receive spam on this email account because it's sitting right here in my nic, so that's why I'm asking. I don't want to give our details to a spammer. Also, once registered, remember to check your spam folder if you don't receive a confirmation email.

Thanks.
bluebell

Seriously, just send an email, go to the site with the password provided, fill out the simple form, and make your payment. If you forget, a link to the email is on the main page, left sidebar. If you do not sign up, bluebell will be disappointed. Weasel will be disappointed, too, but it's bluebell you need to worry about.

Win a Dream Date with Weasel!
Due to popular demand, we are again conducting a separate raffle for a Dream Date with Weasel This fabulous prize includes an entire day of shooting and personalized one-on-one handgun & rifle coaching and instruction at Weasel Acres on a mutually agreeable date with yours truly. The lucky winner will be able to not only bring and shoot their own weapons, but also try out a variety of WeaselWeapons using WeaselAmmo!

We will end the day with dinner at a good Mexican place in nearby Appomattox. The winner will be responsible for their travel to and from Central Virginia, hence the separate drawing.

Don't be a pathetic girly-man loser, register today!

Q: Weasel, anything else for 2024?
A: Why I'm glad you asked! There are in fact TWO things to mention for 2024.

First, we are again having a pre-party get-together the afternoon/evening before the main event. Details at the registration site.

Dos, we are again offering a NoVAMoMe commemorative mug for 2024 available only to NoVAMoMe participants!

We sincerely hope you can join the festivities. I promise you this event is as laid back and non-anxiety inducing as humanly possible, and nothing makes me happier than to meet new people who have been reluctant to join in the past. If sitting on the sidelines and just observing is your thing, you can do just that with zero pressure from anyone. I hope some of the past NoVAMoMe participants will jump in and share their thoughts on the event to inspire the scairdy-cat lurkers out there to throw caution to the wind and sign up!

That's it, people. Email WeaselBell Productions today!

A note about sources. The brick & mortar/online divide exists with cigars, as with guns, and most consumer products, with respect to price. As with guns - since both are "persecuted industries", basically - I make a conscious effort to source at least some of my cigars from my local store(s). It's a small thing, but the brick & mortar segment for both guns and tobacco are precious, and worth supporting where you can. And if you're lucky enough to have a good cigar store/lounge available, they're often a good social event with many dangerous people of the sort who own scary gunz, or read smart military blogs like this one. -rhomboid

Anyone have others to include? Perhaps a small local roller who makes a cigar you like? Send me your recommendation and a link to the site!

20 Nice Katana Weasel!

Friend of mine is into Jap stuff and he collects Katanas among other things. Lots of fakes out there which look good but are not collectible and he loves talking about the ones he has and is pursuing to own here and there.

I bought a few AKM's from him a few years back and when I asked why he was selling them he said he was putting the money from the AKM's into his sword stuff.

Posted by: Hairyback Guy at May 19, 2024 07:09 PM (wX5h4)

21 I'm sure I've watched some videos about the forging and finishing of the katana, very interesting stuff. It's all about the number of folds and then the plunge, which cools the blade and contorts it into its characteristic curve.

54 It might be a bit of interesting research, to study on the evolution of Samauri, and their Swords, as the technologies of truly portable, individual firearms worked their way into that world.

The re-holstering sequences and flourishes might've taken years to have mastered.

Seriously, though. Firearms would had to have been an earth-shaking change to the Samauri. As with the Knights....when the Commoner can fell the most highly trained warriors the world had, till then ever known, THAT is a *change*

60 I bought one of the new Colt Python's a few years back. I got a very good price on it. Other than the coolness factor there are other .357 magnum wheel guns out there that are easier for me to shoot. The factory grips are very large and the gun seems to be nose heavy to me.

Don't get me wrong, when you pull one of those babies out at the range everyone has to come over and have a look, but there are a few cheaper .357 magnum revolvers out there that I shoot better than my Python.

Those were the CAO "Flathead". Maduro wrapper. Box-Pressed, which accounts for the shape.

And easily, in the Top 3 finest cigars to which I've yet put the flame. Perfect flavors. Perfect draw. Perfect texture. Perfect, velvety smooth, creamy smoke.

Know when a cigar really IS "perfect"? When you pull out the Roach Clip and smoke it down to lip-burning length, and still clamor for more.

I've found a few, since, and a local tobacconist. And have a couple in the humidor, even now.

73 A hearty Houston Howdy to all you wonderful people out there in cyberland.
I know this is the "gun" thread, but high powered air rifles still count as guns. Please check out this video; a .357/9mm caliber gun shooting 90 grain slugs at over 900 FPS. The FPS in this gun won't vary more than 10 while on the regulator. It can probably be tuned up to break the sound barrier, but why would you want to? Best part is the gun, by its self, is less than $1000. You still have to buy a scope, compressor, chronograph, and a range finder to get completely dialed in. The best part is that one can affix a "moderator" or Lead Dust Collector - LDC or a sound suppressor WITHOUT HAVING TO EFF WITH THE ATF, because it is not a firearm.

Wore my hooves down to the nub, walking those hundreds of square feet of exhibit space. Ran into a couple of old friends, a good thing, always.

Visited the Triple K Holstery booth. A very Premiere leatherworks shop, which was "old" when I first visited 'em in the early '70s, in their San Diego, CA shop.

Traded some stories of the Olde Dayes with 'em, and they were thrilled with the back-story.

Bonus. They actually HAD a holster there with 'em, for my 1934 Colt Police Positive Target, 6"bbl. Nominal MSRP, $79. They sold it to me for $40. And it is beautiful, dark brown leather, perfect stitching, and Period Correct in design, for the gun.

Now, I just need to find a rockin' chair out front of the General Store, and commence to whittlin' a bit! *spits t'baccy*....DING!

107 No range trip this week. A twofer -- a flu, and a hurting ligament or tendon or something in my wrist, that I had better rest. However, I may go even before that heals, because I ran across a suggestion that I liked -- switch hands! I learned to do this when sharpening, and shaving with a straight razor, so why not shooting? It'll be like starting over, sort of, which I regard as fun.

I thought I had my grip squared away a few weeks ago, and was starting in to drawing and firing from a holster, but a few tips I heard got me right back to grip. The new tips I plan to try out:

Thumbs pointing straight inline with the barrel

Apply pressure such that the pistol is in a sort of box -- grip smushed between palm pressure on each side, and shooting hand pushing up counterbalancing grip hand pushing up under the trigger guard. Or something like that. I plan to play with it and see what I think, and it about kills me that I wasn't at the range today doing that.

Oh, and one more tip I read, which just might have something to do with my injured wrist: try to have the barrel in-line with the forearm, as much as possible.

Hoping for a mid-week trip to try all this out, with hands swapped.

129 I watched a couple of the cheesy 50s flicks you've posted, Cat Women from the Moon and the killer aliens one. Consequently, my YouTube suggestions have included lots of similar flicks.

I saw one had Patricia Neal in it. About an alien who comes to earth to tell us the Universe demand we behave ourselves or else. Includes kind-of off-beat alien actor,* oppositional military, an admiring scientist, a call to meet with leaders of all the world, and Neal as the gal with the little boy and she befriends the alien.

Really really makes one appreciate the quality work of Day the Earth Stood Still (1951). Surely The Venusian (1954) was not an intentional rip-off. Neal had only her haggard look throughout. Like, embarrassed to be in it.

130 Weasel, a full restoration done the right way is the only way to do right by that blade. As for how such an ancient blade made its way to the US in the 1940s? Senior Japanese officers (both Army and Navy) often took their heirloom swords to war. Since there's no war story about how it was picked up after a battle, it's possible that it fell into US hands at the end of war. When Japanese forces surrendered at the end of WWII, one of the surrender conditions was that Japanese officers had to surrender their swords and sidearms. As soon as the ceremonies were complete, US soldiers and sailors would pick over what was turned in for souvenirs, despite orders from the top to not do this. It's quite possible that your sword formerly belonged to some senior Japanese officer (IJA Colonel/IJN Captain or higher) who surrendered that weapon at end of the war in August/September 1945.

I've tried my hand at polishing knives, using Japanese stones, and I just don't seem to have the patience to achieve perfection. A little is better than none, though, when you're dealing with a kitchen knife you've thinned and is all scratched up in consequence.

I have some interlocking gun stuff stories. I have this laser bullet boresight thing that is useful in getting dots zeroed. I found, recently, that when the battery is low, the aim is...off. You would think that it would just be dim or not work. But somehow, it changes the aim.

Anyway, that's a thing.

137 104 Dude I know just offered me a .300 Blackout upper for 200 bucks he put together from his box of parts. If I put it on an A2 lower I think I’ve just made an NFA SBR.
What to do, what to do.
Posted by: RI Red
=====
300 Blackout does well in a short barrel as if it was made for it (it was).

One negative though is you must have rigorous separation techniques for ammo as a 300 BO will chamber in a 223 with a bit of a nudge and then kaboom. A lot of the early 300 BO brass was formed from 5.56 or 223 and so the headmark is misleading.

I have kept from buying firearms that will chamber something that makes them go kaboom as a general practice. When I wanted larger for the AR platform, I went with 6.8 SPC and 6.5 Grendel instead of the cheaper 300 BO just because of that.

I consider the 300 BO as basically an improved M1 Carbine cartridge with a bit longer range and a bit heavier bullet plus subsonic capabilities.

But I don't want to get too stale with fundamentals so I've been dry fire practicing with a DA only Ruger 357. The single action triggers are much lighter so the DA, with snap caps, is my best solution. The snap caps aren't really needed with the Ruger but can't hurt.

141 Carry question

Are there situations where you feel carrying actually INCREASES the risk of a situation getting out of control?

Case in point, walking down the beach to grab a draught beer and enjoying in the sun. I'm not talking about getting plastered or even drinking the whole thing. I'm talking about folks being rowdy and partying and having a rambunctious time in the s . rarely sunny PNW in May. I had my pepper spray in my pocket, of course, but there were sooo many people and so much fun happy chaos it would be very difficult to protect myself even if attacked as it is so crowded. I can only get off so many shots.

If things turn shooty, I feel my best option is to get the heck away.

Sometimes, updates can bugger up drivers for old networking equipment in Linux. To find out, you'll need the actual chip id for the built in network adapter and then search the forums. I had to compile an adapter at run time for one such critter and after a week or so, ended up buying an intel network card that just works.

Realtek is one of the worst culprits behind crappy network adapter and sound chips.

I would hazard a guess that the laser diode has a junction with non-uniform thickness, and low voltage will cause the most sensitive part of the junction to lase, bit a little off-axis. Full voltage makes the center of the junction lase. Just a guess, though.

Zeroing with a benchrest makes it SOO much easier. Dials all the human error out. I am glad that we did it.

Notably missing from the list of pistols that got zeroed: MY P320 that I compete in Steel Shoot with.

148 Range report

I brought all three of my Glocks to the range today, the G44. G48 and the new purple G48 MOS with green dot.
I wanted to see if there was a noticeable difference in accuracy between each of three. My idea did not work out because the G48 jammed and I think it needs to be cleaned and late to the range meet up so didn't want to waste any time. With the couple of mags I did manage, I did not see any noticeable difference in accuracy at 5 yards between iron sight and green dot. This was encouraging. I want to try it next time at 7 and maybe 10 to see when it starts to make a significant difference.

Posted by: That SOB Van Owen at May 19, 2024 07:39 PM (wX5h4)

Easy answer: My US Army Model 1909 Colt New Service Revolver, 1907 Colt New Service Revolver in .44 Russian, or 1913 Colt Government Model (Commercial M1911), all in the legendary Colt "Fire Blue" finish. Arguably one of the best of the finishes Colt ever applied to a firearm, the frames appear dark blue under direct light but look like "black chrome" in indirect light. The small parts (trigger. screws, hammer) are finished so they appear bright peacock blue. The exact processes to create this finish are a lost art today.

156 Oh, and one more tip I read, which just might have something to do with my injured wrist: try to have the barrel in-line with the forearm, as much as possible.
Posted by: Splunge
--------
If your barrel does not line up with your forearm bones when in a shooting stance and grip, then the fit of that handgun is poor for you. Change it if you can. It is always more difficult to excel shooting such a handgun as your grip will be compensating for lack of fit. Works okay when your handstrength is strong enough and the cartridge is lower in power, but not so well when hand strength weakens or you are firing a beast of a cartridge.

Do you have security and software patch updates automated? Doesn't have to be a version update but a simple backported update to the newest Mint stable build. (Backported updates are those updates deemed important by the distribution developers enough to fix on older machines).

Drivers are often a bitch but newer versions of Linux make it easier except for some of the less supported network chipsets out there. Unfortunately, those often end up in laptops.

Largely because I WASN'T hitting anything. More practice necessary for the next time at the range. Which was today!

177 So, in my quest to get better at shooting long range, I seem to have taken a major step backward. As I mentioned to one of the guys, when shooting, failure is always an option.

The day before, under what I admit were almost ideal conditions, I made sure the rifle was shooting well out to 200 yards. (the deepest bay at our range) I put together an amazing group at 200 yards, one flier which did open up the group a bit, but, over all the results were good. I headed into the 1,000 yard match with a certain amount of confidence things were well, And, my first couple of sighters seemed to say I was good to go. Then, the wind came up. And not just a little bit, either. Suffice to say, I was getting blown all over the place, and, in the end, was dead last, with the worst score I've turned in to date. Unbelievably frustrating, but, that's how it goes. Hope to reclaim a bit of confidence at the 500 meter silhouette match next Saturday.

179 Today at the range we set up targets on a program that moved to different distances, and we shot different areas of the target at each distance.

I was practicing with my P320 because, well, obviously I needed practice. And I couldn't hit anything. I had a lot of shots that weren't even on the paper especially when we were shooting at 15 and 20 yards. But even my 5 yard shots were for crap. It was...dispiriting.

So finally I picked up sra blaster's P320 and suddenly I could shoot things. It was like putting on glasses for the first time - I could see! Turns out the dot on my P320 is WAY off. Because, well, it had not gotten its turn at the bench rest. I had boresighted it with the laser...which had low batteries.

So, yeah, cheap equipment, assuming that everything does what it says it does, not confirming approximate zeroes by shooting....

All added up to crap scores. Lessons learned!

180 For my taste, the best looking handgun ever made was the Colt 1860 percussion revolver. The slight streamlining changes from the Colt 1851made it more attractive without lessening the superb handling qualities. First runner up would be the S and W K-frame revolvers. Ruger Blackhawks are some of the toughest, most practical handguns but not the best looking. No semi-autos make my list but that's just me.

I considered some of the dueling pistols, especially flintlocks, I've seen but they were more individual works of art, not manufactured.

Not exactly lost but prohibitively expensive--charcoal fire bluing requires a bit of a touch and expensive gas ovens. Then proper polishing.

You can find different formulas for bluing including how to do something similar to Colt but a lot of them include ingredients that would make the EPA choke if they inspected your setup to do that like arsenic and cyanide compounds.

CE Chapel and WF Vickery in their classic gunsmithing manuals circa 1940's or so have the old timey formulas but some use avoirdupois measures and old time nick names for chemical compounds. Some might get you strange attention from the Feebs if you tried to order them nowadays as well.

It's fairly well known from war memoirs and other documented sources that front line troops with the most access to war trophies often traded them away to rear area troops for rare feasts featuring fresh meat, ice cream, and whiskey/booze. This barter economy has sprung up wherever GIs have gone in the world.

Playing around with that, with a few different pistols, it doesn't seem to be mainly about the pistol. It seems to be about the alignment of the V between my thumb and finger and my forearm. It appears that a small adjustment will bring it more in-line, and that changing handguns is not indicated.

199 Nurse. In this instance, the Mouse Gun IS your friend.

Ruger LCPII, in .380 or .22LR. Or, Kel-Tec, even in .32. Hell, even an NAA .22, four shot single action.

Make your Pepper Spray your primary carry for such events. The Mouse Gun stays more carefully concealed.

Now, granted. The Mouse Gun IS for nostril-contact distances. Which is exactly the scenario you've described.

But, the Pepper Spray IS the better primary defender, there. It's the get ME outta here lever of first resort.

The gun? Only if you're cornered, and in dire fear.

Depending on the firearm, your reach to the trigger is included in the fit. If you have to strain to reach the trigger (power crease in a revolver or a DAO or DA/SA using a hammer, the front pad if using a Glock, and other makes vary). If the reach to trigger is not correct, you end up using a weaker grip than if the fit is correct. Something similar happens if your hands are too big for the gun and you have to insert far too much of your trigger finger.

215 I'm a little different. I'd pick a Smith & Wesson #3 in .44 Russian as the best looking handgun.

216 sra blaster was shooting well with her P320 at close range but she's going down and to the left as the target moved out. 225 180 For my taste, the best looking handgun ever made was the Colt 1860 percussion revolver.

Can't fault you for anything that you said and pretty much blackpowder firearms before the era of mass machinery pretty much were handmade and depended on the skill of the artisan. The good ones did not take shortcuts on any part of the flint or match locks.

Potassium Cyanide vapor used in some formulas has the potential to kill not only you but bystanders.

Arsenic and some of the other compounds can create a rather nasty localized Superfund site. Growing up as a kid, you could get rather some unique chemicals for experimenting but I think a lot of them would require being an adult and probably licensing to obtain.

271 Picked up a new 6" blued Python like the one featured in the Hickok 45 video. The 2024 edition of the blued finish is not the same (or even close to) the old Royal Blue finish previously applied to the vintage Colt Pythons of yesteryear. But after about 50 rounds, it appears to hold up better in the face of wear than the Royal Blue on the cylinder. There's no sign of the wear of a turn line yet. And the blued finish model comes in at only $100 more than the satin stainless standard Python finish MSRP. I think that's a pretty good price if a blued finish is what you're looking for on a Python that you intend to shoot.

275 In discussion with Grateful who attended actual training yesterday turns out there is a "dominant hand pressure" thing that happens. So that's a new fundamental we have to work on.
Posted by: blaster

If you are shooting okay then I would not necessarily bother. The old 60 percent dominant and 40 percent formula has been around for awhile and promoted by some trainers, but some top trainers don't teach it.

The idea is to keep from 'milking' the trigger on one hand with an inconsistent finger grip and thus pulling the firearm astray with your trigger finger.

It is also to avoid a gorilla aka crush grip that can make manipulation of the trigger finger more difficult for some.

Me, I use a consistent strong grip and ignore the 60/40 strong/weak. Then again, I shoot (or did) a variety of handguns and a single master grip is more important than trying to get every last umph of accuracy from a particular one.

Others don't do that or have just one gun. In this case, the empirical evidence is mixed so do it if you think it will help, don't do it if you don't do well with it.

"The First Infantry Division, known as the Big Red One for its iconic patch, was one of the units that participated in the famed landing in 1944. The Division witnessed some of the fiercest resistance at the Omaha Beach landing site, with hundreds falling in the first wave of attacks."

Overall losses for the 1st Division were over 1000 men on D-Day. With Memorial Day coming up, that is worth rememberiing, I think.

379 AOP. If you can (frozen north, so who knows?)... take a close look at a factory Rock River Arms, 9mm lower.

They don't use a "block", the lower is actually made to spec to feed from Glock 17 mags. And, they've got the geometry done RIGHT.

Study one of those out, and you might see where the Endo got it wrong.

My local Black Rifle guru-ess... (owner of Texas Tactical Gear), tells me she doesn't sell *any* 9mm adapters for AR-15 lowers, for exactly your experiences.

Check out Bear Creek Arsenal for some astonishingly low prices, on astonishingly high quality AR gear. You might just find a solution, there.

443 The first round out of my magazine has usually been extremely accurate. The rest are pretty good but not amazing.

Balmy 90 in the shade. High enough humidity that we are getting afternoon thunderstorms.
Should a good hurricane year despite the mild spring.
