Google Search has added a new "search the web" setting, which overrides the default mode of "make shit up and call me racist". (404 Media)
"We've launched a new 'Web' filter that shows only text-based links, just like you might filter to show other types of results, such as images or videos," the official Google Search Liaison Twitter account, run by Danny Sullivan, posted on Tuesday. The option will appear at the top of search results, under the "More" option.

"We've added this after hearing from some that there are times when they'd prefer to just see links to web pages in their search results, such as if they're looking for longer-form text documents, using a device with limited internet access, or those who just want an answer to their fucking question instead of endless irrelevant bullshit," Sullivan wrote. "If you're in that group, enjoy! We'll most likely kill this feature in the morning"

Meanwhile the internet's first search engine, Archie, has been retrieved from near-oblivion and is back up and running on an emulated SPARCStation 5. (Ars Technica)

21 A lot of search results appear to be heavily modified. There are a few thing I have searched repeatedly over the years, but never bookmarked and the results seem to have changed. Now some of this content I know was on the web may have been removed (such as Florence Kings 'Matchstick Men') but it is enough things to make me suspect infamy afoot.

I need to get some more Aleve. On the other hand, Aspercreme with 4% lidocaine has worked well on the shingles pain and itching. And old-fashioned Unisom with light doses of melatonin and magnesium gave me close to eight hours' sleep last night, even though I napped for almost three yesterday afternoon!

43 My son who is over three hours away, working in PA is supposed to serve on a jury in N.J. Starting on Monday. He has had two deferments because he was in school and supposedly you can't get anymore than that. Do you think if he tells the judge he no longer lives in our county, he can get off again? I haven't been asked to serve for years-and I did so- on a grand jury and I actually in the county. What a pain in the backside!

51 My PC build yesterday went ok but the Patriot 7000mhz memory I got will only work up to 6600mhz. There are so many variations on speeds, timing, and latency that it's hard to figure out what this mother board needs. Why do they have to do this PC-56000/7000mhz nomenclature anyway? Just give us one number that will work. I ordered some 7200mhz (is it really?) memory to see if that will work.

My "creative" writing teachers were pleased by my grammar and sentence structure, and I guess the storytelling ability . . . but they were all inclined to "literature" and modern writing and didn't care for, or understand, science fiction, mystery, or thrillers. I guess I understand how the cops would be up for the excitement of a chase. But how much smarter it would be, and less dangerous for citizens, for them to follow the suspect's car and wait until he stops at a convenience store, then step out and nab him.

To be fair, I'm not much of an Alastair Maclean fan anymore either. His stuff made good movies, but he never met a long sentence he didn't likeand his characters were not that memorable. I finally read Ice Station Zebra a few years ago, and was underwhelmed. Dunno why.

His first novel, HMS Ulysses, is good though: a story of one ship and its crew on a Murmansk convoy. Epic.
