On that day, Benavidez carried out arguably one of the most incredible acts of bravery during the Vietnam War and in the annals of US Army history.

Few conflicts offer a better place to explore these matters than the Arab-Israeli conflict.

I often say “When someone tells you who they are, believe them”, and am baffled by people who can't seem to grasp this. The failure of the west to understand how the Arab world thinks is probably the most constant place I'm reminded of this. A must read article.

There is still a great deal of confusion surrounding what exactly happened to disrupt the parade.
At a glance, Sunday’s Cinco de Mayo parade was like any other. It was vibrant and colorful, with entertaining musical acts representing different parts of Mexico.
“We actually found it just walking to the National Mexican Art museum earlier,” parade attendee Jennifer Vasquez said. “We asked somebody earlier. We weren’t even aware it was happening.”
What many parade-goers failed to notice was the behind the scenes drama that began around a half hour before the parade was supposed to take off at Noon from Cemark Road from Damen Avenue in Heart of Chicago. It was supposed to traverse a 1.2 mile route, ending at Marshall Boulevard in Little Village, just south of Douglass Park. Instead, a large fight in the area of the parade led police to issue a cancelation notice.

The Science Is Settled


Smart People Believe Weird Things


“Students that scored well on these [science knowledge] tests were no more or less skeptical of pseudoscientific claims than students that scored very poorly. Apparently, the students were not able to apply their scientific knowledge to evaluate these pseudoscientific claims. We suggest that this inability stems in part from the way that science is traditionally presented to students: Students are taught what to think but not how to think.”

To attenuate these paranormal belief statistics, we need to teach that science is not a database of unconnected factoids but a set of methods designed to describe and interpret phenomena, past or present, aimed at building a testable body of knowledge open to rejection or confirmation.

For those lacking a fundamental comprehension of how science works, the siren song of pseudoscience becomes too alluring to resist, no matter how smart you are.

There is no quicker way for someone to reveal that they are an idiot than for them to say “The science is settled”. Science is never settled, all it is is an admission that they have no clue how the scientific method works, and a lame appeal to authority.

How David Brooks created Donald Trump

Yet the tea party movement was smeared as racist, denounced as fascist, harassed with impunity by the IRS and generally treated with contempt by the political establishment — and by pundits like Brooks, who declared "I'm not a fan of this movement." After handing the GOP big legislative victories in 2010 and 2014, it was largely betrayed by the Republicans in Congress, who broke their promises to shrink government and block Obama’s initiatives.

So now we have Trump instead, who tells people to punch counterprotesters instead of picking up their trash.

When politeness and orderliness are met with contempt and betrayal, do not be surprised if the response is something less polite, and less orderly. Brooks closes his Trump column with Psalm 73, but a more appropriate verse is Hosea 8:7 "For they have sown the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind.” Trump’s ascendance is a symptom of a colossal failure among America’s political leaders, of which Brooks’ mean-spirited insularity is only a tiny part. God help us all.

The Tea Party was the polite response of citizens requesting that the government respect their desires. Trump is the rude response. I don't want to fathom what the next step will be, it goes to a pretty unpleasant place. Sic semper tyrannis

Not a fooking dime. My wife will probably send her a token amount. Actually - since I have 7 sibs and R. has 4, all of us extended family has forgone BD and graduation gifts for all of the nieces and nephews for some time.

We will give a gift to our God sons and daughters though.

A losing GOP candidate in a November 2022 judicial race had filed a lawsuit calling for a new election in her contest in Harris County, where Houston is located. Republican Tami Pierce lost her race to be a criminal court judge to the Democratic incumbent, DaSean Jones, by 449 votes.

Pierce blamed her defeat on allegations that illegal votes were cast by people who did not live in the county and that some ballots lacked needed signatures and other information. In court documents, Jones’ attorney, Oliver Brown, argued that Pierce could not prove there were sufficient illegal or mistaken votes cast in the judicial race that would “materially affect this election.”

But in a 32-page ruling issued Wednesday, visiting Judge David Peeples ruled in favor of Pierce, saying 1,430 illegal votes were cast in the race.

Peeple wrote that among the illegal votes, 983 were cast by people living outside Harris County and 445 were cast by voters who did not show photo identification or did not show a substitute ID document.

So what happens when Trump buys it (hopefully a long time from now) and the Left decides to come out fully in the open that the problem was *never* actually Trump but the half of the country that subscribes to the ideas that he harnessed.

Think about it. The ultimate bait and switch, that the Left loves to do. They pretended for years that their problem with him was he's this terrible immoral person they can't approve of. But sooner than soon we will all find out the problem was never actually Trump's morality, but actually his followers.

They opened that box in 2016 ("irredeemable deplorables") but then when Hillary lost they kind of shoved it back down and put some packing tape on it. Rest assured, it's waiting.

I recently discovered that most any sense I get of edginess, unease, or suspense from watching Nick Cage movies comes not from his acting per se, but from my anxiety that Nick is going to do something dumb or illusion breaking that pulls me out of the story. It's a unique sort of meta-level characteristic.

Another duh and sounds like another person looking at it all wrong. The best scientists have open minds willing to buck and reject what is "known" AND are smart enough to do something about it.

The person complaining here that people are taught what to think and not how to think is miffed because he doesn't like *what* certain people think. He thinks they should "be better" than that and be willing *only* to subscribe to what is known, which is in itself mostly a temporary load of horseshit. Fast forward 100 years and find out.

The scientific method is just that. Valuable for deriving the truth about reality over long periods of time. It is not a Know It All Button that you can invoke to prove how gifted you are at being right. Fucking remarkable to me how the human mind works. Mainly how phantasmically oblivious a brain can be.

MANY highly educated people with above-mediocre IQ's around 117 (like Obama) end up hitching their wagons to people much smarter than they are, echoing their word choices, ideas and worldviews in an attempt to seem/feel like a 130 IQ or above.

The behavioral rewards for adopting Marxist viewpoints are practically innumerable. So in a way it's a mechanism they drive themselves to, but not without massive assistance from the ringleaders.

One of the fun things I remember from old school boy scout camp was the reptile house, where we could watch the snakes being fed. They had a big boa in there, and they'd drop a white rat in with him. I think most species of them can. I am deathly, and I mean DEATHLY, afraid of snakes, so of course I have a bit of morbid curiosity and knowledge about the bastards.

For example, I had a co-worker who had a Burmese Python at home as a 'pet'. One day he was telling me and others how he fed live rats to his snake, He said he broke their legs before putting them in the snake's terrarium. Appalled, I asked, " So they get away from the snake for even an instant?" He replied, "No, so they don't claw and hurt my snake."

Which is crazy. Cross border shopping with Candians, 80% or so live within east driving distance to the border, used to be a concern and made retailers more competitive.

The garden still needs rows laid out. Publius has been having issues with RA, so we're late this year. Also need to repair some damage the deer did to the electric fence over the winter (it wasn't plugged in).

Lots happening with flowers and herbs, just the veggies are lagging.

As for rockets, there was a night shuttle launch when my family was on spring break in Sarasota around 1987. Dad drove us across the state to see it and back in the wee hours; I will never forget the sight.
