Incredible man. This Is Important Why the Arab World Is Lost in an Emotional Nakba, and How We Keep It There I know this is 10 years old, but it's even more true today. But even if these practices exist everywhere, we should still be able to acknowledge that in some cultures the dominant voices openly promote honor/shame values and in a way that militates against liberal society and progress. Arab political culture, to take one example—despite some liberal voices, despite noble dissidents—tends to favor ascendancy through aggression, the politics of the “strong horse,” and the application of “Hama rules”—which all combine to produce a Middle East caught between prison and anarchy, between Sisi’s Egypt and al-Assad’s Syria. Our inability, however well-meaning, to discuss the role of honor-shame dynamics in the making of this political culture poses a dilemma: By keeping silent, we not only operate in denial, but we may actually strengthen these brutal values and weaken the very ones we treasure.I often say “When someone tells you who they are, believe them”, and am baffled by people who can't seem to grasp this. The failure of the west to understand how the Arab world thinks is probably the most constant place I'm reminded of this. A must read article. Diversity! The Science Is Settled Smart People Believe Weird Things “Students that scored well on these [science knowledge] tests were no more or less skeptical of pseudoscientific claims than students that scored very poorly. Apparently, the students were not able to apply their scientific knowledge to evaluate these pseudoscientific claims. We suggest that this inability stems in part from the way that science is traditionally presented to students: Students are taught what to think but not how to think.” To attenuate these paranormal belief statistics, we need to teach that science is not a database of unconnected factoids but a set of methods designed to describe and interpret phenomena, past or present, aimed at building a testable body of knowledge open to rejection or confirmation. For those lacking a fundamental comprehension of how science works, the siren song of pseudoscience becomes too alluring to resist, no matter how smart you are. There is no quicker way for someone to reveal that they are an idiot than for them to say “The science is settled”. Science is never settled, all it is is an admission that they have no clue how the scientific method works, and a lame appeal to authority. Opinion Piece How David Brooks created Donald Trump Yet the tea party movement was smeared as racist, denounced as fascist, harassed with impunity by the IRS and generally treated with contempt by the political establishment — and by pundits like Brooks, who declared "I'm not a fan of this movement." After handing the GOP big legislative victories in 2010 and 2014, it was largely betrayed by the Republicans in Congress, who broke their promises to shrink government and block Obama’s initiatives. So now we have Trump instead, who tells people to punch counterprotesters instead of picking up their trash. When politeness and orderliness are met with contempt and betrayal, do not be surprised if the response is something less polite, and less orderly. Brooks closes his Trump column with Psalm 73, but a more appropriate verse is Hosea 8:7 "For they have sown the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind.” Trump’s ascendance is a symptom of a colossal failure among America’s political leaders, of which Brooks’ mean-spirited insularity is only a tiny part. God help us all.The Tea Party was the polite response of citizens requesting that the government respect their desires. Trump is the rude response. I don't want to fathom what the next step will be, it goes to a pretty unpleasant place. Sic semper tyrannis Kimchi Here's a recipe for kimchi that somehow wound up in my ONT tabs I'm not sure why. Received in the mail today "We are pleased to announce the accomplishments of S.! She graduated from UNC at Chapel Hill with a B.A. in Environmental Studies and a minor in Italian. S. plans on taking a gap year before attending graduate school."
Her Uncle's translation: "S. dicked around for four years on Mom and Dad's dime and somehow graduated after extensive pole dancing (both literally and figuratively) with every soy-boy she could find. Her graduation outfit, pictured on the received card, is from "Sluts 'R Us" befitting her concentration during her undergrad. No one will hire her as she is pig ignorant and and unpleasant in disposition as well as her choice of studies prepared her only for line cook duties at Bob's Burgers assuming extensive retraining. Thus her 'gap' year. Oh, there's a gap there I'm sure. She'll probably have to have that thang relined soon." Thus ends the translation. Right of center voters kept going back to the GOPe with betrayal after betrayal. Trump for all his failings seems to try to keep most of his promises and...to actually fight. Texas judge orders new election after GOP lawsuit challenged 2022 election result in Houston area
A losing GOP candidate in a November 2022 judicial race had filed a lawsuit calling for a new election in her contest in Harris County, where Houston is located. Republican Tami Pierce lost her race to be a criminal court judge to the Democratic incumbent, DaSean Jones, by 449 votes. Pierce blamed her defeat on allegations that illegal votes were cast by people who did not live in the county and that some ballots lacked needed signatures and other information. In court documents, Jones’ attorney, Oliver Brown, argued that Pierce could not prove there were sufficient illegal or mistaken votes cast in the judicial race that would “materially affect this election.” But in a 32-page ruling issued Wednesday, visiting Judge David Peeples ruled in favor of Pierce, saying 1,430 illegal votes were cast in the race. Peeple wrote that among the illegal votes, 983 were cast by people living outside Harris County and 445 were cast by voters who did not show photo identification or did not show a substitute ID document. ---------------- So what happens when Trump buys it (hopefully a long time from now) and the Left decides to come out fully in the open that the problem was *never* actually Trump but the half of the country that subscribes to the ideas that he harnessed. Think about it. The ultimate bait and switch, that the Left loves to do. They pretended for years that their problem with him was he's this terrible immoral person they can't approve of. But sooner than soon we will all find out the problem was never actually Trump's morality, but actually his followers. They opened that box in 2016 ("irredeemable deplorables") but then when Hillary lost they kind of shoved it back down and put some packing tape on it. Rest assured, it's waiting. According to the Baylor Surveys of Religion, belief in pseudoscience and the paranormal correlates not with one's understanding of science but with one's religious beliefs--or lack thereof. At least in the first round of results (which I read while copyediting Rodney Stark's What Americans Believe for Baylor Press), atheists were significantly more likely to believe in astrology, aliens, etc. than were committed Christians.

Smart People Believe Weird Things
------------------- Another duh and sounds like another person looking at it all wrong. The best scientists have open minds willing to buck and reject what is "known" AND are smart enough to do something about it. The person complaining here that people are taught what to think and not how to think is miffed because he doesn't like *what* certain people think. He thinks they should "be better" than that and be willing *only* to subscribe to what is known, which is in itself mostly a temporary load of horseshit. Fast forward 100 years and find out. The scientific method is just that. Valuable for deriving the truth about reality over long periods of time. It is not a Know It All Button that you can invoke to prove how gifted you are at being right. Fucking remarkable to me how the human mind works. Mainly how phantasmically oblivious a brain can be. Gandhi, leader of the Indian civilization, had the lowest value. MANY highly educated people with above-mediocre IQ's around 117 (like Obama) end up hitching their wagons to people much smarter than they are, echoing their word choices, ideas and worldviews in an attempt to seem/feel like a 130 IQ or above. The behavioral rewards for adopting Marxist viewpoints are practically innumerable. So in a way it's a mechanism they drive themselves to, but not without massive assistance from the ringleaders. They had a big boa in there, and they'd drop a white rat in with him. The snake would be motionless, the rat would be jumping around and just about dancing by his nose. And then, suddenly, so fast you couldn't even see it move, the snake would snatch him in its coils, and squeeze until the bones cracked. Then - down the hatch! I took care of the cats when they were on vacation. Even shorter, there are a lot of cats. But when I was taking care of them one weekend, the food intake seemed wrong. I went ther twice a day and food was gone too fast. I messaged my friend and he checked video and a possum went into the sunroom and was eating the food!! I didn't know we had possums here. The GOPe has controlled about as much of the government as the Democrats since the end of the cold war and yet we've descended into a nightmarish leftist dream without a fight on anything.
Because slowly at first, and intensely after the Cold War, the government class realized that their real constituency was themselves and big corporations and bankers. They all get rich in exchange for allowing the big money to get bigger. The "left" gets bought up with comparitally small amounts of money and words and pandering to their hate of normies. The professional "right" grouping gets paid too. Expecting them to actually fight is like expecting a sportsball team to actually kill or destroy the rival franchise that they supposedly "hate". They need that franchise to keep making money. Last thing they want is to " destroy " them. And the internet ruining traditional media allowed the political \business mob to be able to own the traditional media. To stay in operation they must report what they are told.
