Many years ago I moved from OH to PA and screwed up. I let the OH drivers license expire and had to go through the whole deal to get a PA license. Friend let me use his car for the test, one of those Cadillacs with the funny looking trunk. It had a CD player, in the trunk. You could load five CDs in it and off you go. You could control it from the drivers seat, skipping stuff or whatever.

I live in a dry town, common in Arkansas. Just for a drive I made a booze run to a wet town about thirty miles away. I'm returning, screwing around with the radio instead of Sirius, and talk about timing. DJ says here's one you son't hear often, Robert Mitchum singing "The Ballad of Thunder Road". Looked at the bag of booze, got inspired, damn lucky I didn't get a ticket. "Let me tell the story, I can tell it all, about the whippoorwill that hauled illegal alcohol".

73 I live in a dry town, common in Arkansas.

Posted by: bill in arkansas, not gonna comply with nuttin, waiting for the 0300 knock on the door at June 01, 2024 08:17 PM (V5eKu) Speaking of car radios, I have been putting those little cheap-ass Dual stereos into all my vehicles. Only 29 bucks at WalMart, but they claim 25 watts per channel, run 4 speakers, and have a decent AM-FM tuner with presets, and no tape transport or CD drive. But they do have Bluetooth, aux inputs, and a front panel USB socket so you can plug in a thumb drive full of mp3's. And the unit is only 2 inches deep. I gave one to a friend to put into the inside windshield header of his '46 GMC truck. Saw it today at the car show. He is real pleased with it. I love the French folk song, and the video is delightful.
However, for travel music, there's no beating classic big-band swing. For music that wants to make you punch the pedal to the metal, try Artie Shaw's "Traffic Jam", from 1939: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TjvlosdrfXo Shaw's two-and-a-quarter octave glissando at the start of the cut is amazing, but it's Buddy Rich's drumming that really makes it come alive. One of the oddest things I used to experience:
Was raised in Las Vegas; as an adult working in the Northern CA Bay Area, would occasionally make a few treks back to my hometown each year (and admittedly liked to gamble -- mostly Hold 'Em poker). INVARIABLY -- no matter where I was on the journey nor what time of day or night -- finding and listening to whatever classic rock stations I could find, I would ALWAYS hear at least once (and often more): "Do It Again" by Steely Dan. "Now you swear and kick and beg us that you're not a gamblin' man Then you find you're back in Vegas with a handle in your hand Your black cards can make you money so you hide them when you're able In the land of milk and honey, you must put them on the table, yeah " Posted by: ShainS -- 'Guilty Until Proven Guilty' Future 'Convicted Felon' at June 01, 2024 08:56 PM (bu09+) 302

The funny thing about this thread is that it reminds me how often I drive with no music at all. Nice to have time to ruminate and contemplate.
I wonder about those people who can't drive without being on the phone. If you can't be by yourself and your own thoughts for a little while, that's diagnostic. Posted by: TRex at June 01, 2024 09:08 PM (IQ6Gq) 324
One time we got turned around at a freeway exit and had to pass a dead skunk in the road 3 times. I am not making that up. It's now part of our family lore.

My favorite song from the 60s is Cara Mia, with good ol' four octave Jay Black. Someday I'll be tooling along, having a personal karaoke, and bust something while trying to hit a note.

I don't drive long distances anymore, thank goodness. But when I did I liked to play music I could sing with. Tapes or CDs I always brought were by Barry Manilow: Showstoppers (Broadway show tunes), Swing Street, Singing With the Big Bands, and Paradise Cafe. I know all the songs. Whatever else he is, the man is a master music arranger and normally uses a key I can sing in.

Road trip story: A coworker and I were visiting our Florida office, and on the weekend, decided to drive up to Cape Canaveral from the Miami area. It turned out our musical tastes were pretty much 180 degrees apart. The negotiated settlement was we'd each control the radio dial for 30 minutes.
He liked heavy metal and rap. (I've since developed at least a neutrality for metal, but still don't care for rap.) After a particularly obnoxious piece had played during his control period, I sarcastically said it was too bad there was no metal/rap fusion pieces. He said, "Oh, there is!", and went on a scanning frenzy (manual, this was before radios had auto-scan), and finally found one, AND then cranked up the volume to eleventy. I lasted maybe 30 seconds before turning it off, and declaring the radio would not be played for the rest of the trip. Posted by: Duncanthrax at June 01, 2024 09:18 PM (a3Q+t) 343
