Gun Thread: Mother's Day Edition!

ma barker 2 051224 scaled.jpg

Howdy, Y'all! Welcome to the wondrously fabulous Gun Thread! As always, I want to thank all of our regulars for being here week in and week out, and also offer a bigly Gun Thread welcome to any newcomers who may be joining us tonight. Howdy and thank you for stopping by! I hope you find our wacky conversation on the subject of guns 'n shooting both enjoyable and informative. You are always welcome to lurk in the shadows of shame, but I'd like to invite you to jump into the conversation, say howdy, and tell us what kind of shooting you like to do!

Holy Hallmark Shitballs! It's our festive annual Mother's Day Edition! That joyous time of the year where it only seems fitting to pay tribute to the shooting Mom's in our lives, so Happy Mother's Day to all of you Mom's out there! In fact, all the shooting 'ettes deserve a special day of their own, don't you think?! Ma Barker, pictured above, certainly fits the definition of a shooting mom... or did she? While there is some question regarding her level of participation in the "gang" bearing her name, some of her sons were unquestionably familiar with firearms. In any event, it's an interesting story, some of which is chronicled at the Oklahoma Historical Society's website, and Wikipedia even has some interesting things to say on the subject.

Programming Note: I'm feeling a little under the weather so I will likely be in and out (mostly out) of the comments tonight. I'd consider it a personal favor if you don't burn the place down. Thank you!

With that, step into the dojo and let's get to the gun stuff below, shall we?

******

FUNdamentals
Something we haven't discussed much here is dealing with malfunctions. How can you practice fundamentals if your gun is all jammed up? Let's take a look at some common malfunctions now.

But wait, there's more!

And still more!

And bonus SEH gal!

What other clearing drills do you practice? You are practicing clearing malfunctions, right? Oh for Pete's sake, please, please, please practice becoming proficient at clearing malfunctions by yourself. It does take practice, and you need to know how do do it unless you want to be seen as a helpless ninny!

Q: Weasel, does bein a helpless ninny impress range babes?
A: No, no it does not.

Surviving a Traffic Stop Whilst Carrying
If you are regularly carrying your gun, and you should be, you ought to have a plan in mind in the event you're stopped by the police.

The one time I had a police interaction with a gun in the car was when I was stopped on the side of the road with a flat tire. Although not required to do so in Virginia , I had my license and concealed carry permit in my hand as the State Trooper approached and I was quickly reviewing in my head the little statement I was going to give about having a weapon in the vehicle. As he came to my window I said hello and offered the two cards. The trooper said simply "I don't need to see those" and that was it. Truth be told, I was a little dejected. I wanted to finally give my little statement.

WeaselPhilosophy teaches us when having contact with the police, or really anyone for that matter, but especially the police; don't be an asshole.

I knew that he probably knew I was a permit holder if he looked up my tag as he pulled up, and I wanted to do what I could to put him at ease because I had precisely nothing to gain by making his job any harder than it needed to be. It turns out the trooper was very cool and we chatted about guns and shooting as the flat tire was sorted out.

Gun Lawyer Gal makes an excellent point in the video, and that is the side of the road is not the place to argue about your rights or anything else for that matter. Save it for court if necessary.

What do all y'all think? Do you have a plan? For those not required to inform police you're carrying, do you plan to do so anyway? If not, why not?

2024 NoVAMoMe

051224 hello-moron scaled.jpg

Note: One of the great joys of NoVAMoMe season, at least for me, is being able to cut and paste the entire block of text below and haranguing you to register for the event. Have you registered? Are you focusing on the fundamentals of registration?

Alright, guys and gals, the long awaited and highly anticipated opening of 2024 NoVAMoMe registration is upon us! That's right, registration for the event of the season is open, which means you can register to attend! You see, in order to attend, you must first register, and then wait for June 8th, and then attend! It's really more of an application to attend based on whether we like you or not, but what have you got to lose?!

Q: Weasel, your world frightens and confuses us. How do we, how do you say, register for the NoVAMoMe?
A: Welp, it's pretty darn easy!

First, check your calendars for June 8th, 2024, and cancel anything already planned. Good so far? Then simply send an email to WeaselBell Productions expressing your interest, then sit back and anxiously wait for a reply. Our pal and most delightful 'ette and MoMe Hostess Extraordinaire bluebell will review your application and relevant permanent record notations to decide if you're NoVAMoMe material. If you're one of the chosen, you'll get a reply with a link and secret password to the registration site containing all the pertinent details. Look these over and complete the simple registration form, following the PayPal link provided at the end of the form to make your payment. The $30 pp fee covers appetizers, dinner (BBQ Chicken, hamburdogs, sides, and dessert) plus an unlimited amount of fun! Since we must guarantee a headcount to the caterer, all registrations must be made online by May 26th. We are not accepting payment for registration at the door. You do not need a PayPal account to register and can pay with any major credit card.

A NoVAMoMe PSA from our pal bluebell

Hi folks - just a quick PSA. If you write for info about the MoMe, please give us a few words in the body of the email just so I know you are a Moron and not a spammer (moron). I do receive spam on this email account because it's sitting right here in my nic, so that's why I'm asking. I don't want to give our details to a spammer. Also, once registered, remember to check your spam folder if you don't receive a confirmation email.

Thanks.
bluebell

Seriously, just send an email, go to the site with the password provided, fill out the simple form, and make your payment. If you forget, a link to the email is on the main page, left sidebar. If you do not sign up, bluebell will be disappointed. Weasel will be disappointed, too, but it's bluebell you need to worry about.

Win a Dream Date with Weasel!
Due to popular demand, we are again conducting a separate raffle for a Dream Date with Weasel This fabulous prize includes an entire day of shooting and personalized one-on-one handgun & rifle coaching and instruction at Weasel Acres on a mutually agreeable date with yours truly. The lucky winner will be able to not only bring and shoot their own weapons, but also try out a variety of WeaselWeapons using WeaselAmmo!

We will end the day with dinner at a good Mexican place in nearby Appomattox. The winner will be responsible for their travel to and from Central Virginia, hence the separate drawing.

Don't be a pathetic girly-man loser, register today!

Q: Weasel, anything else for 2024?
A: Why I'm glad you asked! There are in fact TWO things to mention for 2024.

First, we are again having a pre-party get-together the afternoon/evening before the main event. Details at the registration site.

Dos, we are again offering a NoVAMoMe commemorative mug for 2024 available only to NoVAMoMe participants!

We sincerely hope you can join the festivities. I promise you this event is as laid back and non-anxiety inducing as humanly possible, and nothing makes me happier than to meet new people who have been reluctant to join in the past. If sitting on the sidelines and just observing is your thing, you can do just that with zero pressure from anyone. I hope some of the past NoVAMoMe participants will jump in and share their thoughts on the event to inspire the scairdy-cat lurkers out there to throw caution to the wind and sign up!

That's it, people. Email WeaselBell Productions today!

Cigar of the Week

This week we take a look at how to cut a cigar.

Oh what the hell - here is how to light a cigar after you cut it.

******

Here are some different online cigar vendors. You will find they not only carry different brands and different lines from those brands, but also varying selections of vitolas (sizes/shapes) of given lines. It's good to have options, especially if you're looking for a specific cigar.

Cigarsinternational.com
Cigarpage.com
Famous-smoke.com
Cigarsdaily.com
Neptunecigar.com
Smallbatchcigar.com
Bobalu Cigar Company
Cigarbid.com
Nicks Cigar World New!

A note about sources. The brick & mortar/online divide exists with cigars, as with guns, and most consumer products, with respect to price. As with guns - since both are "persecuted industries", basically - I make a conscious effort to source at least some of my cigars from my local store(s). It's a small thing, but the brick & mortar segment for both guns and tobacco are precious, and worth supporting where you can. And if you're lucky enough to have a good cigar store/lounge available, they're often a good social event with many dangerous people of the sort who own scary gunz, or read smart military blogs like this one. -rhomboid

Anyone have others to include? Perhaps a small local roller who makes a cigar you like? Send me your recommendation and a link to the site!

21 Happy Mother's Day all....

Continued the twice weekly practice schedule. Friday showed progress. Mainly because I ditched the black/yellow targets (couldn't see the iron sites with them), and created my own from white paper plates with 6 inch red target spot applied to them. Well, actually being able to see the target makes it much easier to hit the darn thing. Which for the most part I did.
Today's goal was to get all the shots on the white paper plate/red circle, and most of those on the red. Again, more progress. At the end of the session 63/75 hit the red/white, and most of them were on the red.
At this point I think my weak spots are still stance, and remembering to keep the wrists steady. So, the practice schedule continues.
And now I need to add malfunctions to the learning list.

41 A busy gub two weeks for me.

I got my SMLE No.1 Mk III* in the mail last week. [Well, picked it up from the Post Office myself anyway.]

BSA Co. 1943 "dispersal" build with matching serial numbers throughout the weapon -- wooden stock; bolt; nose-cap etc. "N 47715". Looking for the serial number for more info, I saw several from SMLE forums guys with higher 'N' numbers than mine.

Needs a cleaning but the only apparent damage is the middle, top wooden handguard is separated a bit from the bottom forestock that I understand is common.

45 We have a farm with plenty of room and I am designing a handgun range for family and friends. There will be MUCH more shooting by newbies than experts.

I am trying to set up two shooting stations for the most common target distances, and can then design the rest of the range around the "core" function.

Moron advice would be greatly appreciated on the following questions:

1.) At what distance do you practice silhouette drills?

2.) At what distance do you practice small target drills (i.e. precise aiming)?

3.) How would you modify those ranges for new shooters?

4.) What is the distance you have chosen to zero in your sights for your self-defense weapon?

5.) Any other advice for other range needs, or fun shooting drills/plinking to induce kids to become Morons?

(Thanks Weasel.)

53 Grateful, toasting you back with a Malbec. Did you get some range time this week?

Posted by: Ben Had at May 12, 2024 07:29 PM (D/6Qm)

54 So, got off the phone with my mother (Happy Mother's Day!) and there was a bed thing to report from her neck of the woods.

Some time back, she woke up to crime tape sealing off part of the neighborhood. There are yuppieville houses (her words) across the way. And in one lived a single dad, with two kids - one infant and another older child (I think close to teen-hood). And the ex-gf, from whom he had won custody of the smallest child (at minimum) had broken a window and gone in and killed him.

She went home and her dad took her to the hospital, then called the police and turned her in.

But, the important thing being (for this group)...
1) Make sure you're going to know if someone bad tries to get into your home.
And, 2) Be ready to deal with them, even if you feel like "That couldn't happen here."

I am very happy to know that the 'ettes here are at least ready to handle that second bit.

Congratulations, Grateful! You're getting in more range time than I have lately. To create a "malfunction" in your handgun at the range, just load a snap cap into your magazine instead of a live round. Make sure your snap cap has a bright color so it will stand out amid a sea of brass on the range floor after you clear your "malfunction."

Another reason to get more magazines for your pistol is that magazines themselves are often the cause for malfunctions (dented feed lips, damaged bodies, etc.). Magazines are ultimately an expendable item. Don't hesitate to replace them when the time comes, especially if they're used and abused a lot (dropped in the dirt, stepped on, etc.).

73 sra blaster's (and mine because of course we have two of everything) was a Keltec PF9. Small. But kind of brutal to shoot. A true last resort.

So upgraded her to an Sig P365 which fit her hand well (and of course I had to get a P365 XL) and was a HUGE upgrade. But now she's shooting full-size handguns she iOS thinking about an Sig 938 because it has more weight.

I have no interest in having one so not sure if she will be able to get it.

I have 4 magazines for my Sig. All were manufactured by Sig.
But I will not buy any more mags as I want to wait until I move out of the Peoples Republic of New York State/City.
They only permit me to have only 10 round magazines.
Would love to buy standard capacity magazines but it is a big NO NO until this unconstitutional law is removed.

So, going save some money for the time being. :-)

Pelican. Expensive, but they lead the pack when it comes to durability. If they can take what the USMC can dish out, they'll handle any abuse you come up with. If you're not happy with what's on the shelf, there are a few vendors at Chantilly who can cut the inside foam to fit your requirements. Don't forget to reserve space for at least three magazines per handgun.

76 What do all y'all think? Do you have a plan? For those not required to inform police you're carrying, do you plan to do so anyway? If not, why not?

No, because of the greater than zero risk of escalation by the officer into a violent encounter. I would prefer not to be shot during a sadistic game of internally inconsistent Simon Says.

87 And yesterday I made a pseudo-impulse purchase.

I have a 6.5 CR Howa 'precision' rifle with a separately-bought 3-9 x 40 scope; and I have the SMLE but the .303 ammo is alot more expensive than the 6.5 CR.

So I bought the Ruger American Rifle in 6.5 CR that was $200 off with a factory-attached 4-12 x 44 scope that the same store was selling on its own for about $350.

I figure practicing with the Ruger will help with the Howa; and even for using it as practice for the SMLE but with ammo that's just under $2 Cdn instead of roughly $3-3.50 Cdn for the .303! And I could eventually swap out the scopes to put the better scope on the Howa.

He was still advancing but she handled the clearing protocol like a pro and eventually put the guy down.

95 The Armed Attorneys totally miss a big issue for me, in terms of handing over a firearm to them: I will NOT hand them a loaded firearm. If a police officer demands my gun, I will insist (politely) that I clear it first.

Of course, if it's a bad cop (I think only a bad cop would insist I hand over my weapon unless I'm being arrested) they won't like that, and I will insist they disarm me, then. (I will also do the "Am I being detained? Am I being arrested?" bit for that.)

As they say, though, be polite but firm concerning your rights.

One other note on being searched. If they ask to lean into the car, tell them "No." That's a fishing expedition. They lean in, claim to smell something, and they use that as the reason to search your car.

97 Skip, I believe that most lead in the US today comes from recycled lead-acid batteries, which are mostly from cars. Disposing of these as a hazardous waste is expensive, whereas recycling is significantly cheaper and might even put a few bucks back into the disposer's pocket. In addition, the cost of energy to smelt lead ore makes mining ore for virgin materials much more expensive than recovering the lead in its (mostly) pure state from recycling. This goes double if the bullets are made from copper, like the M855A1 rounds for DOD, or some high-performance hunting rounds.

102 Had a good range day today. Working on purging the hidden flinch and punched a lot more holes in/near the center of the target with a lot more consistency. Fundamentals like stance and grip are starting to feel more intuitive/unconscious.

Started by mixing snap caps in with a few mags which got me off to a good start. Next step is getting off to a good start without that exercise. Still focusing exclusively on my gub rather than jumping between gubs.

103 1.) At what distance do you practice silhouette drills?
10, 15 and (if I'm feeling froggy) 20 yards. Mostly Mozambique drills.
2.) At what distance do you practice small target drills (i.e. precise aiming)?
5, 7, and 10 yards.
3.) How would you modify those ranges for new shooters?
Start them at 5 yards, let them master the fundamentals, then increase distance gradually. Once they are comfortable, introduce them to timing their strings/shots.
4.) What is the distance you have chosen to zero in your sights for your self-defense weapon?
25 yards for PCC. 100 yards for rifle.
5.) Any other advice for other range needs, or fun shooting drills/plinking to induce kids to become Morons? It helps to have a table set up for gear, mags, etc., and to have a place to park your (empty and cleared) pistol before going down range to check targets.

106 So, range trip this week: Headed out to see if I could figure out why I suddenly couldn't hit anything at the 1200 yard match.

The rifle bays were all in use to the point getting some useful information at a leisurely pace wasn't going to happen. I changed plans and headed to the 500 meter silhouette range, which was empty and practiced on 5" diameter steel out to 500 meters, Unreal side note: Still can believe hitting dead center on a 5" target @ 200 meters is pretty much "business as usual" these days.

Anyway, things were dialed in nicely until 400 meters. (I was shooting a 178 grain custom load over my usual Hornady 30.06 Match load) Anyway, with the Hornady stuff, if I miss, generally, I'm shooting low. With the custom stuff being a bit hotter, turns out I was high, which was noted in the log book. I then moved to 500 meters and, aiming dead center, caught the edge of the plate. Moved the cross hairs to the edge, hit dead center. (slight breeze had come up) Groovy.

In the end, near as I can tell, my problems were A: Me and B: Me. I just was having trouble getting properly set up behind the rifle and staying on the target at the 1200 yard match. So it goes.

121 I'm allowed to talk to my grandsons about guns. They live far from us and we only see them a few times a year, but they have been to the range with me and fired, stripped, and cleans most of the guns.

Today I emailed the 13-year-old, a deadeye marksman, the ballistic comparisons between the Ruger SP101 3" wheelgun he's shot, and the circa 1933 Model 94 Winchester 30-30 (saddle ring on R side) he has not fired.

I gave him the fps muzzle V for both 38-SPL and 357 mag, and a regular 180 g deer load in the old 30-30. Muzzle energy for all also, but for the rifle I gave him the numbers for out at 100 yards also.

I reminded him that you practice with the SP101 with 38, but if you are going to keep it loaded in the house, car, or on-person, you load with magnums. I promised him I'd have the 94 with us when we see him this summer so he can try it out. He's shot the AR and knows its light kick.

I was going to have a small table at the front of each shooting station that was 16" deep for utility on the things you listed, and to hold a pistol bench rest for people needing to adjust sights, test loads/bullet weights, etc.

I was also going to add a picnic table for extra flat space, lunch, and a viewing station for those waiting.

For safety, should one shooting station have wood "walls" that are narrow enough that an idiot (small "i") shooter cannot turn around with gun extended and cover the observers?

(My family is not that stupid, but how idiot-proof does a part-time range need to be?)

Ma was certainly not the leader but she did travel with the gang during the heyday of their crimes. Unfortunately she was with one son who decided to open fire when the FBI had their hide out house surrounded.

I don’t think the FBI needed a cover up for having shot her but they definitely did do what you indicated in exaggerating her role for PR sake.

If Mrs. E likes the High Power but not its weight, AIM Surplus still has stocks of the MILSURP lightweight FN High Powers with aluminum frames for $899. 131 I posted this earlier but it's on point and I thought it was funny. I watched an actual murder trial on TV. The defense was self defense. A prosecution argument was that the defendant fired eleven rounds at the victim (but struck him only twice) and that amount of lead is indicative of rage rather than fear. The blond, female prosecutor, who appeared to be about fourteen, was attempting to make this point on opening statement by saying that the defendant fired "the entire cartridge" at the defendant. Later, on cross examination of the defendant, she said he reloaded the semiautomatic pistol shaping her right hand into a pistol and using her left hand to repeatedly rack the slide. Better than SNL.

137 May I suggest shelving/storage space for some support equipment, like cleaning kits/tools and supplies (lubrication, cleaning fluids, patches, and more)?
Save a spot for at least a first aid kit, if not a combat lifesaver or full medical bag.

And finally, some kind of communication in case you don't have cell phone service at your place. You won't need it often, but if you do, you'll probably need it REALLY BAD.

Thanks Ed! I have a first aid kit in my work truck, but will certainly need to upgrade for gun range and kids.

That was a very important reminder of something I did not mention in my list!

They did put up a new cell tower along the highway two years ago that now gives good coverage over our entire property. In addition to resolving the communication safety issues, I can now run the cell phone "real time" game cameras. Funny coincidence, the number of trespassers has declined substantially!

Pelican is the big guy on the block. Their Vault 200 for a couple of pistols is ~$80. You will have to cut the foam - which isn't real difficult, but I can't figure out how to easily do it while leaving some foam on the bottom of each layer. It looks a bit ragged.

But, with 2 layers, you can put your pistols on top and cut out bits for all your magazines on the bottom layer. (There are 4 layers of foam, with 2 useable for your stuff, and the other two being top and bottom cushioning.)

That sounds like a requirement for one "tight" stall and a RSO within arms length of any shooter that is not radiating the correct safety vibe.

143 I really like my Pelican Vault. I bought it to take my carry weapons to my college reunion. I wanted to carry in CO, AND I hoped I might get to the range. I did carry, but I didn't get to shoot.

For pistols, you can pack the locked case* inside your regular luggage. So, noone can casually observe "Oh, hey, that guy is checking guns." The * is because, since it's a pistol case inside your other luggage, you don't have to use the "go ahead and open me" TSA locks. You can actually use a solid lock (and the Vault will let you use one with a big haft) to keep it secure. You will have to use the TSA locks if you want to pretend to lock the outer luggage, though.

I picked it up at a gun show about half price it was a blem and the last one the seller had.

Also - you are not required to have TSA locks on gun cases. In fact you shouldn't because you are supposed to be the only one with the key. But the rules allow you to use them.

Posted by: blaster at May 12, 2024 08:38 PM (oqfuk)

One of the nice things about collecting surplus weapons, both rifles and handguns, is I have learned to clear just about every malfunction you can think of. The best, or worst, was when the pins on the fire control group worked theyselves out on an AKM I had been running thru it's paces. Live round in the chamber, fire control group all bowed up in the receiver and me wondering WTF just happened. When I got it home it was a sweaty adventure getting her disassembled while not letting the hammer slap the firing pin while getting the top cover off. Whew!

Any firearms have to be in separate hard cases. BUT, you can then place that case inside other luggage IF it's a pistol case.

I prefer that for the sake of anonymity (once you're past the check-in counter where you may have to open the case) AND for the sake of not paying for an extra bag.

180 The only problem transporting firearms I’ve ever had was coming back from FL. I had my Ruger Max 9 and two magazines in a locked metal case in luggage - no problem. I had a third empty magazine in my carry bag. They confiscated it at the gate. They were concerned that a number of people each could carry a piece of a firearm and then assemble them in flight. Not sure how they’d get ammo though.
I lost a perfectly good $35 mag on stupidity.
Well, maybe mine. I could have put it in the gun so all mags would have been in the case. D’oh.
But then I wouldn’t have been able to put the box of ammo in the case.

182 Gun related: My boss walked out from her garage, and gave me an old, break-barrel .177 air rifle. Blue Steel and some kinda hardwood. Likely, Birch.

The steel is pretty much specked with red rust, barrel to tang, with about a 50/50 ratio of rust to blue.

Given that the rifle is pretty much worth damn near zero in it's present state, it shall serve as an opportunity.

Electrolysis? Some kind of "Deep Creep", or Kroil?

Goal will be to get it as good as it can get, without a re-finish or re-blue. And then if the thing turns out to be a shooter... then maybe some CeraKote or such.

Photos of the whole process will be sent to Weasel, of course!

197 I guess I'll have to dive into some EweToob restoration channels.

I like the idea of electrolysis, in that it might revert some of the oxides back to a pre-rust state. Not so much as to reverse damage that's already occurred, but to keep as much steel ON the thing, as possible.

Oil and 0000 will be a bit of a last resort. That's the full frontal attack, and it's removing metal with every stroke.

Mostly, I'm wanting to document processes that work, and let the Gun Thread keep the documentation as Archive, for y'all.

204 Remember in terms of stops, it depends on the state.

In TX, I was told in my (then) CHL class you ALWAYS present your CHL/LTC to the cops when they demand your DL and insurance. The reason being is that it will come up when the cop runs your license anyway. Police officers are assholes and they are looking for every and any opportunity to take out their rage on you. BUT...when you present the LTC, one question is taken out right away. You cannot have warrants or be anything more than a Boy Scout to have one. So you are removed from suspicion. And 99% of the time I have only ever gottten warnings (and DPS MUST issue a warning at minimum). And at stops, maybe about half the time I have been asked if I am armed. I just tell them the truth. The other half I have not been asked.

You WILL be harassed by police in the TX Panhandle, especially if you have out of state tags, thanks to nerby states' friendliness to certain...agricultural products. Do not give them a reason to pull you over. But if you do, give them your LTC, and that should do it.

Thx, blake. That pic is from an early, very rainy session. Since then I’ve gotten a great node for reloading 168 and determined that the book seating depth is the best for this gun.
I was going to start pushing it out to multiple 100s of yards but had a honeydo weekend. Next week I’ll be wring out the 6.5 Creed at distance and be comparing the two.
I shall report.

211 For pistols, you can pack the locked case* inside your regular luggage.

Posted by: GWB at May 12, 2024 08:29 PM (1zxQh)

I have a solid set of locks for my Pelican case. I still just love how at the SWA counter I was asked if I was sure my locks were TSA approved. To which I replied with the truth: they were AF issue and were good enough for a gun case that had an M9 and M4 rifle. If that wasn't TSA approved I didn't know what was.

223 180 The only problem transporting firearms I’ve ever had was coming back from FL.
Posted by: RI Red at May 12, 2024 09:06 PM (wrDSd)

One time I flew through AUS to...someplace, I forget where, and realized later, to my horror, I had taken a G26 mag through security. Unloaded. Never detected though. Naturally I got that thing the hell out of the computer bag I use for carry on purposes.

224 "55 Lead is getting scare in public use, tire weights are no longer lead, construction anchors are being swapped for other parts"

This is ignorant and wrong. Metallic lead is not a problem. If you melt lead you need to take special precautions against breathing invisible dust. People who work in indoor ranges can also breath lead dust. If you are shot near the spine with a lead bullet the surgeon may decide the risk to the spinal cord is not worth it. People have died of old age with a 50 + year old lead slugs in their body. Lead salts that cannot dissolve in water are not as dangerous as those that are soluble. The really dangerous lead are the heavy organo-metalics such as TEL, Tetra Ethyl Lead. Until about 50 years ago motor gasoline sold in the US contained TEL. Now only aircraft are allowed to use leaded gasoline and the EPA is trying to phase it out.

Non metallic lead is a central nervous system toxin and people with growing brains are at elevated risk. Thus while its dangerous for people that are older than 11, the risk rapidly increases for younger patients. Exposure of any TEL to the fetus MUST BE AVOIDED.

I have degrees in Chemistry, Chemical & Electrical Eng.

244 Range report.
I target shoot at the Crump Conservation Club near Crump Corners in Linwood Township about 145 miles NNW of Detroit. We have just started the CCC Spring Pistol League Matches, its simple, no prizes, shooting at 10 yards with a Ruger Mark IV .22/.45. I have not been shooting well, the first session I had a sore knee, sore foot, and many miss fires. I assumed that a famous American brand would be clean burning. It was not and I had to clean my pistol and buy federal ammunition. Last Monday my foot was still hurting and I had a sprained neck. Tomorrow I will try to ignore my foot pain and follow Weasel's excellent advice.

"75 Any favorites/recommendations on hard cases for handgun air travel? Ideally, something large enough to hold two gubs?
Posted by: TRex at May 12, 2024 07:34 PM (IQ6Gq)

Pelican. Expensive, but they lead the pack when it comes to durability. If they can take what the USMC can dish out, they'll handle any abuse you come up with. If you're not happy with what's on the shelf, there are a few vendors at Chantilly who can cut the inside foam to fit your requirements. Don't forget to reserve space for at least three magazines per handgun."

I have two excellent military surplus hard cases for handgun air travel. I looked for Pelican, they don't have any brand on them. One is good for at least three guns the other should carry about six. When I bought them at the gun show the price was so reasonable I didn't bother trying to negotiate.
