How do you let two parties fool the entire public into willingly going along with the two parties agreeing which false choice will be in charge ? You do it by "ranked voting". Because you can't prove it - you can't track it - Hell, most of the public can't even understand it if it was done honestly. You'd have to have run-offs ... for every candidate below the threshold to win ... if you wanted to do it honestly. Multiple votes - lowest candidate out - as well as all others below the line to win - if you were honest. 'Bama ... welcome to the shit show. Enjoy DNC rule. Of course MeeMaw signed it. MONTGOMERY — Governor Kay Ivey signed Senate Bill 186, sponsored by State Sen. Arthur Orr (R-Decatur), to protect the integrity of Alabama elections by banning the use of ranked-choice voting on Friday.
Instead of being able to vote for a single candidate, ranked-choice voting offers voters a choice of candidates to rank in order of preference. Candidates who receive 50% or more votes win automatically. However, if no candidate garners at least 50% of the votes cast, then the lowest-scoring candidate is eliminated, and their votes are assigned to the other candidates. The process continues automatically until a single candidate reaches 50%. The new law prohibits the practice of ranked-choice voting in Alabama except in the case of electors who are entitled to vote absentee ballot under the federal Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act. “I am proud to sign this bill which takes another step towards ensuring the confidence in our elections. As our Secretary of State Wes Allen put it, ranked-choice voting makes winners out of losers. Not only is ranked-choice voting confusing to voters, it also limits their ability to directly elect the candidate of their choice. Posted by: rickb223 at May 10, 2024 10:27 PM (RJiwi) 56

Not only is ranked-choice voting confusing to voters, it also limits their ability to directly elect the candidate of their choice. Voting should be simple, and this complicated and confusing method of voting has no place in Alabama’s elections,” Ivey said.

I don't know how to capture this ... but in the Ohio Valley - which he's near ... the entire color palette changes when big weather is on the way. MONTGOMERY — Governor Kay Ivey signed Senate Bill 186, sponsored by State Sen. Arthur Orr (R-Decatur), to protect the integrity of Alabama elections by banning the use of ranked-choice voting on Friday.

Bit of personal trivia - when my future mother-in-law was pregnant with my future sister-in-law down in Jackson, Mississippi, there was a weird atmospheric event. It was early evening and there was this sound overhead that MIL (all those dashes are taxing) described as being like a load of planks crashing together and hitting the ground. She said it also sounded like steel pipes banging together.
Everyone on the block rushed out, and nothing to be seen. This was post-Sputnik and Explorer 1 but before the Space Race really heated up. When I first heard the story, my initial thought was a bolide of some sort exploding in the Earth's atmosphere. No sonic boom, just that weird, almost musical crashing, clanking noise. Weird little family mystery. Posted by: John Drake Nearing The Caspian Sea at May 10, 2024 11:59 PM (u/Zei) 220
It's hard to believe but I saw an aurora in Cocoa Beach in January 1986. I was cooling off after an argument with a guy who was staying with me but I ended up running back to get him to see it because 1) it was fantastic, and 2) no one would believe me if I didn't have someone else see it.
Turned out it got reported in the paper the next day. My buddy thought it was from a secret laser they had on a Black Shuttle mission that was up. Hoot Gibson was commander. My favorite astronaut. Posted by: pawn at May 10, 2024 11:59 PM (QB+5g) 221

Fun Albigensian fact
I had a graduate seminar in Medieval Heresy. Sorry Old Papa, some tuition money was misspent Posted by: Miklos the Cathar Additional fun Albigensian fact: when the Church declared the Albigensian Crusade to crush the Cathar heresy, the bishop acting as the military commander was told that some of the people in the city that they had targeted might be Catholic rather than Cathar. The bishop said "Kill them all, the Lord will know his own." So, if you've ever wondered where "Kill them all and let God sort them out" came from ... yep, that. Medieval casualties of war are notoriously inaccurate, but the military subordinant of the bishop above estimated that they killed around 25,000 people. That's updated every 30 minutes, and will run out of May 10 after a while. Anyway, that tells the story of why we could see it so well here, at 34.7Nish. Watch the aurora bloom up as the terminator swept across the US starting at 5/11 0:00 Zulu. Look at me in the NE corner of SC, after the terminator passed over us. It's southward peak right at our longitude peaked around 9:30PM EDT. That's when we saw the show. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at May 11, 2024 02:10 AM (w6EFb) 320

I actually kind of like the call of the mourning dove. Got one nested in a tree to the side of my house. Kind of soothing in the hours near dawn.

JQ, you might get lucky and see some streamers, which amazingly we did here at 34.7N. Look overhead every so often. You may seem some long thing whispy streaks, maybe white colored like will look like long whispy clouds for a bit. If they start to shimmer, the produce distinct ray-looking streaks, you've seen it. They'll be pointed roughly north-south and visible more overhead. Publius--
Saw streaks and streamers, as you described, about 2 hours ago. Not as well-defined as in some aurora photos, rather a bit blurry in comparison, but quite colorful nonetheless. Will keep looking outside from time to time. Posted by: JQ at May 11, 2024 03:48 AM (njWTi) 372
I been outside four times now, and ain't a damn thing happnin'

Those streamers are a *complex* plasma-physics thing. I was reading. It's due to "flow burst" -- there are some charged particles that get pushed suddenly earthward and get accelerated rapidly. If you had a sensitive magnetometer right underneath, you'd see your local magnetic declination wig-woggling, shimmering a bit itself. Yeah, publius, as I stood out there gawking earlier, was wondering -- "how much excess radiation am I absorbing right now?"

Not a thing to worry about at the ground. Just visible light hitting you. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at May 11, 2024 03:59 AM (w6EFb) 376
Haha, thanks publius!
Not that it matters... I'm too old to worry about the radiation LOL. Also-- I don't care. Posted by: JQ at May 11, 2024 04:01 AM (njWTi) 377
More worried about ingrown toenails at this point, LOL
