Greetings, oh great Horde of incredible magnitude! I appreciate your patience as I stand in for the pros. I am happy to share my joy about the month of May. First, everything is no longer covered with yellow pollen. Second, I can get through most days without some form of allergy med. Third, this is the month in 1942 that changed the course of the Pacific War. It was not the minutely, exhaustively researched, and reproduced Battle for Midway, which was admittedly an even greater event. That’s next month. I refer to the Battle of the Coral Sea that was fought from April 29 (or May 04) to May 8, 1942.
The Battle of the Coral Sea was the first time since the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor that the enemy’s seemingly relentless advance into the Pacific was checked. It was also the first major U.S. Navy fleet action against Japan and the first naval engagement in history in which the participating ships never sighted or fired directly at each other.

The Japanese were suffering from “victory disease”. Most of the Japanese people still believed the propaganda spewed out by the government and press. Any speech or action that would question the “information” would invite an uncomfortable visit from the Kempeitai. The army and navy commands, with a few exceptions, believed it too, thinking themselves invincible and on a holy quest for the emperor. And I will admit, there was not much prepared nor effective opposition. However, the first week in May proved that those beliefs were a bit ambitious.

“Coup de Gras – Battle of the Coral Sea” by R.G. Smith is one of many depictions of WW2 battles featuring aircraft and ships. The painting depicts a TBD (Torpedo Bomber Douglas) dropping a Mk13 torpedo on the light Japanese carrier SHOHO. The TBD was ordered in 1934 and entered service in 1937. Although it accounted for a number of firsts for Navy carrier planes, it was underpowered and dangerously slow, especially when carrying its primary weapon, a 1900-pound Mk13 aerial torpedo. A little surprisingly, the TBDs fared relatively well in the Coral Sea battle. But as we all know, their experience at Midway was “devastating”, not in a good way.

TBD.jpg

Both sides lost a carrier (SHOHO/IJN and Lexington/USN), a destroyer and many aircraft (92 IJN and 62 USN). See a graphic here. Thus, it might be considered a draw. But the action checked the Japanese advance in the South Pacific and is generally viewed as a strategic victory for the United States. It was historic because neither surface force saw the other. All engagements were carried out by aircraft. I think, even more critically, it was the baptism by fire for our pilots and aircrews. It was the first time they had faced the battle experienced Japanese navy and had fought them to a standstill. They had been bloodied but gave as good as they got.

Here's a declassified combat narrative of the battle from the Naval History Command archives for those so inclined. There are some funny things in the narrative like how our aircraft were engaged by “ZEROs and Me109s”. Heh…gotta work on that aircraft recce, boys.

R. G. Smith was trained as an engineer and employed by Douglas Aircraft Corporation in 1937. He developed his talent for art on the side. There is a good profile of Mr. Smith at the US Naval Institute here. Predictably, Douglas aircraft were often the subject of his paintings, but he painted all manner of vehicles and scenes. His work is prominently displayed in the Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola, Florida.

To whiplash us to today, one word: electric.

joby.jpg

Electric air taxi manufacturer Joby Aviation announced completion of its pre-production flight test program and is now shifting its focus to obtaining air certification using its prototype aircraft.

I have been following Joby closer than usual as my previous employer has committed a bunch of money to the endeavor. I understand the concept and it sounds cool. “Pilotless” still makes me nervous and I am skeptical about the longevity of batteries and electric performance overall. There are other players on the field including one that wants to debut their vehicle at the Paris Olympics this summer. What the heck. Maybe it will be awesome.

Here's a 5-minute CNBC vid about eVTOLS if you are interested:

But first, ”there are a few hurdles”.
But the quest to make these electric aircraft ubiquitous across the globe instead of just playthings for the rich is far from a given…Like all great promised paradigm shifts, numerous challenges loom—technical hurdles, regulatory mazes, the crucial battle for public acceptance and perhaps physics itself.

“…perhaps the physics itself.” Priceless.

Well…this actually looks pretty cool, physics be damned: JETSON ONE!

Now, just for fun, TOMCAT TALES. This was made in 2021 and you will see Dale “SNORT” Snodgrass who died in a small aircraft accident in June of that year.. It’s pretty long so pick your way through as desired.

The video has some very good discussions about the airplane and its 30-year history with the crews that flew them in peace and combat. At the 55:00 mark, you will see Captain Mark “MUTHA” Hubbard describe a ramp strike from the LSO’s (Landing Signals Officer) perspective. Been there. The next segment is about ejecting…been there too. I didn’t like nights either. It’s a dangerous job.

For even more fun, check out the official Blue Angels documentary trailer. It premiers in IMAX this weekend (17 May) and will eventually flow to Prime streaming. I’m going to see it in IMAX. If you have the opportunity, you should too.

You can use the IMAX website to find theaters and showtimes.
This ONT humbly brought to you by the Sound of Freedom.

31 As you know, or will know in a few seconds if you continue reading, the NHL is adding a team in Utah. They will begin play next season, but have not yet come up with a name. This is where you can help. Though it is already to late to get a logo/color scheme/mascot for the inaugural season (they will just be known as "The Utah NHL Team") they are having a fan vote to decide on the name. Link here. https://tinyurl.com/nshw5cvd

Can we please make sure that the winner isn't "The Utah Powder"? Please? It's bad enough for a player to be stuck in Utah, but to be called the Powder is a bit too insulting.

Actually, I am a bit surprised that the "Utah Polygamists" isn't a choice.

Hmmm, I'm not so sure. The Japanese could afford to lose a lot more than we could at that point. We lost Lexington, leaving us with three (really 2.5, given that Yorktown was in bad shape), while the Japs had at least 6. All those numbers are pulled out of deep storage, so I'm prepared for correction.

35 In order to prevent classification as toxic waste sites, all congressional office buildings will have air conditioning and electrical lighting removed. All congressional meetings and votes will be held outdoors, in the interest of transparency.

Congress was given the choice of working remotely, but felt that working outside in thunderstorms was preferable to being near the people they represent.

36 OTOH, it looks like the IJN lost a lot more planes / pilots than we did, and given the paucity of trainee pilots in their pipeline compared to ours, I suppose one could say it was the beginning of the long grinding down of IJN aviation.

We had the Enterprise, Hornet, and the damaged Yorktown. The Japanese had the Akagi, Kaga, Soryu, Hiryu, Shokaku, and Zuikaku. One of the last two was damaged, and the other had lost a significant part of its air group, so they were not use for the operations at Midway.

I refer you to "Shattered Sword" by Parshall and Tully, who note that the Japanese had to leave two carriers behind, which had been damaged at Coral Sea, when they set off for Midway. The Battle of Midway might have had a very different outcome if those carriers had been present.

91 Hmmm, I'm not so sure. The Japanese could afford to lose a lot more than we could at that point. We lost Lexington, leaving us with three (really 2.5, given that Yorktown was in bad shape), while the Japs had at least 6. All those numbers are pulled out of deep storage, so I'm prepared for correction.

I refer you to "Shattered Sword" by Parshall and Tully, who note that the Japanese had to leave two carriers behind, which had been damaged at Coral Sea, when they set off for Midway. The Battle of Midway might have had a very different outcome if those carriers had been present.

Fine, but that doesn't really affect the argument that Coral Sea was not a strategic victory. Midway unquestionably was.

95 The Battle of the Coral Sea was a strategic victory for the US. First, it stopped Japanese invasion of New Guinea, which would have threatened Australia. Second, two IJN carriers were not available for Midway (one sunk, one damaged). The Yorktown, though damaged, was available for Midway through herculean efforts of the shipyard. The yard was given days to perform months of repairs; legend has it there were yard birds embarked continuing repairs as she got underway.

131 IIRC, wasn't the P-47 the Single Seat fighter with the greatest number of kills in the European Theater of Operations?

I'll posit that once the '47 got it's Long Range Legs, and the Paddle Bladed Propeller, that it became the best all-around fighter in that mix. The P-51 was marginally faster, and had Laminar Flow superior aerodynamics.

But the '47 was far tougher, more survivable when hit (both airframe and cockpit), and carried two more M-2 .50s than the '51. Combat tactics were different, but the P-47 was just simply, deadly as hell.

Best fighter in the Pacific? Numbers say "Hellcat", but the P-38 sure did a lot of USAAF heavy lifting out there!

yes (I guess) but their faith lost. Was the God of our Fathers not involved?

idk, but "strong faith" in a non-Christian religion is perhaps inferior to the 1940's era Christian belief? Was it not just about who had the greater BelieF" in their God? Or maybe it was?

The Battle of the Eastern Solomons and the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands don't get the glamour of Coral Sea and Midway but were very important and desperate toe-to-toe CV vs CV slugfests like no other in the Pacific Campaign. The USN sort-of prevailed, barely. CV task force vs CV task force battles like these never again occurred. The best description of these two battles I've read are in John B. Lundstrom's "The First Team and the Guadalcanal Campaign: Naval Fighter Combat from August to November 1942."

The best descriptions I've read of the Coral Sea and Midway battles are in the same author's "The First Team."

Cops still use vehicle mounted radar, but I don't know the current, preferred band. I know K, X, or N band, these days?

Works great when the patrol car is moving, and does the math to calculate the speed of the target car, regardless of relative bearing to the cop car.

Laser Speedguns though, still gotta be optically aimed by the actual officer. And in so doing, capture a digital image of the target car, with it speed projected right into the image.

To the glitter though. Cut to the exact right sizes, it might make a useful Chaff. And wouldn't that be FABULOUS! lol

214 But my friends crossed the border into Detroit. Hell, years ago, you just wanted to get on the freeway and escape.

But he reminded me of a happy memory. Much younger, I was in my 20's, it was before 9-11, and I was taking my 5 or 6 year old black God-daughter to see 'Pocohontas' at the Fox Theatre in Detroit. Very fancy.

I drove up through the Ambassador Bridge to the customs area. Clean looking relatively cute 20ish white guy with a 5 or 6 year old black girl next to me. Trying to cross an international border.

I said hello. Handed the border agent Keesha's birth certificate, our tickets to the show and a note from Keesha's mother that said she knew what what going on. I said I know it may seem weird, white guy, black kid, but you can call her Mom. I told Keesha to tell her where we were going. She happily said 'To see Pocohontas !

She let us through. But there was nothing alarming about the scenario. I wasn't horribly creepy and wanted to give them everything tney could want to prove Keesha was safe and Keesha was happy as ever and wanted to get to the show..

Life was nice back then.

The United States Navy pretty-much eradicated the Imperial Japanese Navy. Battleship Nagato was the only capital ship not sunk at the end of the war (she was sunk as one of the moored test ships in a post-war Pacific atoll nuke test). A few cruisers, light carriers, and destroyers may have been afloat or sunk but possibly salvageable in ports at the end of the war. Not enough to make a standard USN 4-carrier task group break a sweat in mid-1945.

She had an emergency appendectomy yesterday. Put the kibosh on her date. I'm guessing it didn't really affect her Momma's Day all that much cuz apparently she was sunning herself on the beach today feeling quite sore.

I asked if, in her capacity as a nurse, she assisted with the procedure at all but she was under general anesthesia and didn't get to participate.

I had also asked if her doctor was handsome with strong yet gentle hands but got no answer. Going to assume she was out like a light by that point.

Will continue to work on getting pics of the surgery scars.

249 36 OTOH, it looks like the IJN lost a lot more planes / pilots than we did, and given the paucity of trainee pilots in their pipeline compared to ours, I suppose one could say it was the beginning of the long grinding down of IJN aviation.

Concur. I find it useful to view the Pacific War as a chess game where the USN gets more and more new pieces as the game continues while the IJN gets only a couple. When the IJN couldn't checkmate in the first quarter of the game, the end was inevitable

Posted by: azjaeger at May 13, 2024 12:31 AM (3/XaG)

250 How much did the mutual dislike and distrust between the IJN and IJA affect the course of the war and eventual outcome?

251 Well, after troubleshooting and failing, my space bar on one of my laptops now work. I did nothing. Nothing! And now it works. The problem happened on one of my Linux laptops (I have two). It was the Dell refurbished machine I bought cheap on Amazon. A risk but it ran solid, no problems till this morning. Then the space bar no longer worked. The laptop keyboard worked except the spacebar. Now, no problem.

I blame Trump. Also, Trump fixed it!

The casualty number makes sense when you take into account the Tokyo Express running down the Slot practically every night.

At the beginning of the war, the Japs had three major advantages on us: The long-lance torpedo, the Mitsubishi Zero and naval night-fighting capabilities.

The Slot was a series of naval battles with capital ships mostly at night. In light of that, the casualty comparison with the army/Marines makes sense. The US lost 38 ships during the six-month battle of Guadalcanal, including a light carrier and two battleships.

My late father's service in WWII was on a Casablanca class escort carrier, sometimes termed "Baby Flat-Tops" or "Kaiser's Coffins," in the Pacific Theater. While his ship saw combat during the Battle of Okinawa, he always said that what frightened him the most was Typhoon Cobra, aka "Halsey's Typhoon."

He was a QM and dealt with navigation and every related task, and often had to man the wheel. When Typhoon Cobra was at full intensity, he was at the wheel and it was hellish to maintain any kind of control. At one point the entire vessel heeled over so far that he said he could have reached out the port window and scooped up some sea water.

His ship somehow made it through undamaged, but others in the task force weren't as lucky. That was one aspect of the naval component of WWII - it wasn't just the IJN that was trying to kill you: the sea wasn't exactly friendly as well.

He was a signalman onboard merchant ships in convoys... they had a few Navy folks onboard to be able to run communications for convoys.

Twice, Kamikazes flew over his ship... to hit others. He, like me, always wondered why we had been spared.

258 I was an Air Force Brat, my Dad was stationed at Nellis AFB for seven years, home of the greatest military flying team, the THUNDERBIRDS! Saw them perform twice a year, and the Blue Angels can suck it! It's a treat for me to get to see them when they come to Travis AFB, where I was born. With all the bases shut down here in Commiefornia, they're not out here very often, more's the pity. But if you can't see the Thunderbirds, then it's okay to settle for second-best and see the Blue Angels fly. (And I was sorely disappointed to miss the aurora coming down south, but the damn fog was in.)

Exactly - both Germany and Japan were forced to accept that their defeat was decisive and final, and that any continued effort was futile. Especially the former, since the "stab-in-the-back" theory in regard to WWI was one of the beliefs Hitler exploited to gain power and then lead Deutschland into an even-worse hellscape of war.

This goes to show just how hidebound and inward-looking the Japanese High Command actually was.

We had SHATTERED Japan's ability to produce good and to equip for war.

Because we'd sank the huge majority of Japan's Merchant Fleets, and bottled up what remained, in various ports and coastal waters. Forget them sailing to India or Malaysia or Vietnam or etc., for cargoes. They'd not make it there, or they'd damn sure not make it back.

So, what do the Kamikaze flights target? Warships. Just, warships. All the way down to Destroyer Escorts in the Screening Ship roles.

All those fat, dumb, lightly armed and slow U.S. cargo ships, oilers, munitions ships, and etc? Nope, nope and NOPE!

Those what were targeted and hit, were the exceptions, at most.

Years ago, I was able to view a few (still) classified combat photos of the passageways below decks of the USS Franklin. Many of the sailors KIA were burned or asphyxiated by smoke and gases that could not be vented fast enough.

The sight of dead sailors that were 3-4 deep for as far as the eye could see in the P-ways has never left me. There were over 700 KIAs.

That's bad enough, but the Franklin survived her wounds and would be repaired. Survivors of the last attack had to retrieve and 'bury' the remains of their shipmates with a minimum of ceremony and then quickly return to damage control duties. Pure horror.

Well hey there.

Hopefully they got to it and removed the offending appendix intact without a lot of fuss. These days a simple procedure unless a rupture but even with that, a tad more time in the hospital with some big gun antibiotics to prevent peritonitis which back in the day prior to the advancements of said antibiotics could be fatal. I got lucky in 1974 they had those antibiotics. Otherwise , you'd be missing out on my witty repartee...

286 Glad to hear Nurse Ratched is ok. And she was slated to hve a date that night? Now there's a "meet-cute" story for Hollywood, at least the H'wood of years gone by. The kind of tale you tell your kids. "And then Daddy came to see me in the hospital with some flowers, and . . ."

At the "Champagne Stroll" event Saturday night, when a load of uptown stores stayed open late and often provided some free cheese and wine to everybody who visited, one shop had a print of an attractive 1940s brunette on the wall. Not a movie star, but a headshot of a pretty woman with her hair done and wearing a simple print dress. I asked, and it was the owner's grandmother.

She also was a dead ringer for my own mother.
