Sorry. This rendering feels very much like something done from memory or as an exercise. The scale feels off, the composition is meh, the waves are done in a very formulaic fashion, the ripples around the fisherman's legs are contrived, the lack of detail... Just not good.

The yellow colours of the foaming waves in Toorop’s High Tide are strikingly similar to the yellows in Van Gogh’s Sunflowers, which he exhibited in the 1890 show. An interesting artist. This painting makes me think of Van Gogh with the strong brush work and distinct use of color and the pose of the working man. It's not something I would hang but it is interesting.
Toorop used a number of styles in his career. I especially enjoy his Pointilism and Impressionist style paintings. To my surprise, a couple of his works on the Wiki page reminded me of John Bauer's Swedish folklore illustrations. There is a creative and fanciful aspect to them. Jan Toorop I get the sense that Ol' Jan had a keen understanding of the challenge the waves and undertow daily gave the fishermen when pulling their boats to shore; that is pretty dope. "Only". Children, dead. Some starved to death. Others dying after excruciating pain from wounds. One is too many. bombing kids is not a good strategy for the side that claims to be morally just. Why did Hamas start this war? Put the blame where it belongs. Why doesn't Hamas surrender? Why aren't "Pro-Palestinian" partisans calling for Hamas to surrender? So Israel could nuke gaza and it would be hamas's fault, no blame at all for Israel? No. Even if one side in a war didn't start it, they still cannot bomb kids. Posted by: Robert at May 13, 2024 10:38 AM (ALRQm) ++++ I've been assuming - based on nothing, but wanted some kind of estimate - that Hamas was inflating counts by 100x and that the UN was inflating counts by 10x, with the super-inflated Hamas numbers providing context for the inflated UN numbers, and lending credibility to the UN numbers. And now the UN admits to 2x and 3x multiples depending on demographic group. And that's just what they've admitted to so far. But my question isn't "what is the real multiple," it's "why admit it, and why admit it now?" I wonder if the UN thinks the game in Gaza is about up, and they are trying to get ahead of the inevitable exposure of what it's been up to there. Is this an "old news, already covered" gambit?
