Captain Marvel

Cpt Marvel.jpg

This is from Captain Marvel Adventures #16 (1942) What I find interesting is that while the Steamboat character (and all black characters except Steamboat's girlfriend) is drawn in a style that would be unacceptable today, none of them is depicted doing any stereotypical 1940s "negro things" (like eating fried chicken and watermelon, etc...). The Japanese soldiers Captain Marvel fights earlier in the issue are also drawn in a very stereotypical (slanty eyes and buck teeth) manner. Plus there's an article titled A Dead Jap Is A Good Jap. Different times.

Okay, so to support women, these gals address their emails with the women first. Can you believe the bravery? Or another woman refuses to call her doctor “doctor Jones” if he calls her by her first name. Go girl! And another brave, trail blazing soul doesn’t use Mr. and Mrs. Steven Smith on address labels. Oh no! She addresses it Annie and Steve Smith. The coup de grace was some guy who said he wasn’t sure how much space he was allowed to occupy in the conversation, but he schedules play dates WITH OTHER FATHERS TO ENSURE THEY ARE ENGAGED! That has to be like the street-raw Harley of helicopters - you get strapped in, and what I remember most is the noise level! Even shouting you could not be heard by the person sitting next to you - and then when it took a turn, you looked out the open side door straight down at the ground and trees beneath you, because they laid it on it's side to make a big sweeping turn. It unnecessarily fatigues the aircraft. NOE flying is about the worst thing you can do if you want to extend the life of your aircraft. And some aircraft used in the forestry service already have years behind them. Not worth it for a gag. It is hard to convince people of this. It's also hard to convince them that getting up in altitude to cruise for even for short sorties reduces turbulence gust intensity also helping to extend structure life. Even accounting for greater pressurization cycles.

181 Ed Dutton (similar voice and cadence to Fleming) is casting-central for a stuffy British academic. He is 99% that. He mentioned off-hand that he was playing Iron Maiden on his electric guitar, and his dog took this to be close enough to howling, and joined in. Deciding that "this guy isn't so bad after all" is what meeting Fleming would be like.

On the ER topic

I have taken my 85 year old Old Mama to the ER on many occaisions.

She waits, because EMTALA says treatment, money or none, OK.

The infuriating part is that the ER is full of people who are clearly not local (I can speak Spanish if I want to) and so-

Americans who pay, wait.

"Newcomers" who have never paid and never will, hey, first come, first served.

Americans both wait, and pay.

This, in part, explains Trump.

My mother began her RN career in the ER in 1954. She stayed there until 1984 when she took a position teaching trauma nursing at the hospital 's nursing school. One of the few times anything negative came out of her mouth was her statement that she had become tired of being a social worker. She commented once about growing up poor. Dirt poor during the thirties but they always worked hard and never took a handout. She didn't see the poor who started flooding the ERs in the same light. She was a staunch Goldwater Republican while dad was an FDR Democrat. Political discussions in our family were rare. She would have loved Trump.

Had to look up the name (not K-H, know him); didn't recognize it. Probably saw them as I went to a lot of Cosmos games at Giants Stadium from the fall of '82 to whenever they folded in, what, '86 or '88? Saw club friendlies, including Maradona with Napoli, Kevin Keegan with Newcastle and others. Saw the Cosmos play a tune-up with Peru for their '82 World Cup appearance. Cosmos trounced them 5-2, scoring 2 or 3 goals down to 10 men on a cold, heavy flurries, March day. Got tix for the W.C. in '94, also in Jersey; I remember scalping two Italy-Ireland tix, $90 face, for a grand. Won a lottery for the 1/4's and saw Jurgen Klinsmann play against Bulgaria. Stoichkov scored one goal in a 2-1 Bulgaria win; Stoichkov was Europe's player of the year that year.

I've seen the USMNT twice, once at the Meadowlands (a 4-0 friendly win against Mexico) and another time at Rutgers (a friendly 0-0 draw with Colombia).

I miss going to games. I enjoyed them.

Yeah, I'm one of those people.

I love that Mothra film - it's the most surrealistic of any of the Kaiju films, and that's because of the little princesses. https://youtu.be/wCDIYvFmgW8
Posted by: mikeski

I could readily believe it. From what I've read, he always considered himself a dancer, and probably loved carrying an entire video on showing his skills. There's a Mel Gibson interview on Youtube somewhere about him wanting to cast Walken in Braveheart. Gibson said Walken met with him at a party in NYC on the roof of the Peninsula Hotel. He talked about how gracefully Walken moved - he "slid sideways" through the crowd right up to Gibson and his assistant.

And they began to talk. And the more they talked, Gibson said, the more Walken weirded him out. At one point his assistant left, and Gibson said that he knew at that point he didn't want to work with Walken, but couldn't explain why Then Walken flashes this strange smile, and Gibson feels compelled to look behind him and see what Walken's seeing. There, on a rooftop, as part of an ad, are the numbers 6,6,6. Gibson is officially freaked out at this point and ends the meeting quickly.

355 Bear in mind, Gibson is probably a little excitable and volatile. I always saw Walken as talented and eccentric, but a prisoner of his facial appearance. I've read that he idolized Elvis and always tries to have a hint of the Elvis hairstyle in his coiffure.

Quentin Tarentino had (unusally) what I thought was a good take on Walken - in the 80s and the 90s, he was seen as leading man material, and was going all out for that. When it didn't materialize in the way that either he or Hollywood hoped, then he began playing the "character" Christopher Walken. As Tarentinto pointed out, it was at that point where the Walken imitations and parodies really caught fire, because Walken himself was parodying Walken.

The key period for Walken was 1980-1990. That bookends the first film where he had the lead role, Dogs of War, and the last, King of New York. The big one in that timeframe was The Dead Zone. Hollywood apparently saw promise there, but it didn't pan out. That's the thing, though - in such an insular place, oddities like Walken can sometimes get on their radar, whether it makes sense or not.

That was an awesome movie, based on an Alistair MacLean novel. Bronson seems to have been an interesting fellow. Kurt Russell told a story about working with him on The Travels of Jamie McPheeters. A teen-age Kurt found out it was Bronson's birthday and got him a gift. Bronson looked at it blankly, then walked away without saying anything. Russell didn't know what to think, but caught up later with Bronson and asked him what happened. Bronson just said, nobody ever got me a present before.

Kurt Russell said that after the gift incident, Bronson went out of his way to be nice to him, even telling the producers to take a hike when they didn't want Russell riding a skateboard in between scenes. Everything I've read indicated that he was a pretty decent guy, with genuine humility.

As an Ole Miss alum, I admit I may be a bit biased, but the article in the link definitely had a pro-Palestine angle to it. In usual media fashion, they "correct" the headline several paragraphs down with the information that one person in the crowd was simulating ape behavior and making chimp-like noises. One idiot in any mass gathering is hardly an indicator of the entirety of the crowd.

From what I can tell, the pro-Hamas demonstrator was aggravated when the crowd drowned out her every word with "terrorists," and she moved forward to possibly provoke a confrontation. Some in the Ole Miss crowd called her "Lizzo" and made fun of her weight. Not nice, perhaps, but agitating to kill Jews is arguably less so, to put it mildly. The funny part to me is that the UPD intervened for the Hamas crowd's safety and whisked them off-campus. Bad old Ole Miss actually saved their terrorist-loving asses from the consequences of what they were doing.
