  • Every map of China is wrong. (Medium)

If you overlay satellite data on maps of China, nothing seems to line up properly.

This is because all recent map of China are wrong - deliberately so, with locations shifted by anything from 50 to 500 meters.

And nobody in China is permitted to correct the errors.

  • There's another critical security vulnerability in GitLab. (Ars Technica)

    GitLab is great.

Under no circumstances should you run your own instance connected directly to the internet.

  • Nurses say hospital adoption of half-cooked AI is reckless. (TechDirt)

I'm sure they do, and I'm sure it is, but this article not only provides no evidence whatsoever for these claims, it doesn't even provide any coherent claims.

  • Kobo's 2024 e-reader models are user-repairable. (Liliputing)

In the sense that a moderately experienced user with a $20 screwdriver set can open them up and replace the screen, battery, and motherboard, and the front and back parts of the case if the damage is physical rather than electronic.

Which is not everything, but is certainly something.

11 Evening and morning to all the early risers and late toilers!

I spent a good part of last night coughing my head off. Barely got five hours' sleep. On the good hand, it feels like I've finally cleared out whatever gunk was deposited by the cold; I finally did sleep, some, and haven't coughed since I got up.

On the better hand: 'Tis Friday, the consummation devoutly to be wished!

26 Senate candidate McCormick: I am tired of seeing PA towns like the one I grew up in devastated by the fentanyl epidemic brought on by mexican drug cartels and illegal immigrants.

The mayor of that small town (D): fact check! We only had 2 overdose deaths last year and neither one of them bought their drugs from a mexican cartel member. So, there is no fentanyl problem in PA anywhere! All lies!

The police chief of that small town: yeah! And we only have 2 illegal immigrants in town. We know, because both have been arrested multiple times. (One for trying to pass a million dollar bill) And everyone knows it is legal immigrants from China bringing in the fentanyl.

Psst, just between you and I, Evergreen State College is in Olympia, Washington which is on the other side of the state.

After The original Marxist race riot at Evergreen all the qualified students bailed out. Actually it was more like their parents yanked them out and what was left was all the blue hair communists who were confused if they're boys or girls. To keep enrollment up Evergreen tossed out all enrollment standards the next academic year. Within a couple years, if memory serves me correctly, 40% of the student population was identifying as transgender. In a perverse manner, Evergreen is a highly successful left-wing school.

-

It's why so many new cars - even stripper base models - are being sold with the mandatory "luxury!" of radar based cruise control. It has nothing to do with cruise control, and generally users find the distance-based style is a lot more trouble than its worth.

It's testing the radar in preparation for the law and lawsuits.

It's no coincidence that many, if not most, of those same cars already have really annoying radar-based panic braking, too. You can disable it for now, but you likely won't be allowed to after it's an official law regulation

61 During clashes between anti-Israel protesters and pro-Israel counter-protesters on Tuesday night at UCLA in California, one flag held by a counter-protester caught the eye of many.

The bright yellow flag was not that of Israel nor of the PLO, and certainly not the flag of the Hezbollah organization, which is similar in color. Instead, the flag flown by the pro-Israel counter-protester was the yellow "Moshiach" (messiah) flag of the Chabad Hassidic movement.

A video that has gone viral on the internet shows a CBS News reporter's reaction to the flag, which he had never seen before.

"The first I've seen of this, I've never seen this flag before, or this logo. I don't know if that's what this group is. We've been trying to get a clear view of what that says," the reporter pondered aloud to the viewers.

Many on social media were surprised that the reporter was unfamiliar with the flag, as members of the Chabad movement fly it across the world, including all over the US.

62 Automatic emergency braking tech will become compulsory on new vehicles before the end of the decade, potentially saving almost 400 lives every year

--

hahahaahahaa

That's fantastic. And, same as airbags, intended to save people that refuse to buckle up.

Oh, wait:

"But that’s nothing compared with the shocking 6,272 pedestrian fatalities that happened the same year, 65 percent of which were caused by people being struck by the front of a moving car."

Of note, half of those are involved someone being drunk, and, comically, the majority (30%) is because the pedestrian was drunk.

So *YOU* need the added weight, inconvenience, maintenance, cost, etc. added to your car.

To potentially save 400 people out of 340M.

100 NY Post: Stormy Daniels’ lawyer claimed at Donald Trump’s trial Thursday the $130,000 she was given “wasn’t a payoff, and it wasn’t hush money.” Keith Davidson was on the stand at Manhattan Supreme Court when he made the admission, cheekily testifying he prefers to describe the arrangement — which was set up by then-Trump lawyer Michael Cohen with the porn star — as a “consideration in a civil settlement.”

So once again, we have a trial without a crime or a victim which of course means Trump walks. Right?

Posted by: Warai-otoko

Worked at a semiconductor manufacturer a while ago.
The manager was doing a dog and pony show for some Japanese customers and was asked if the finished wafers/chips were stored under nitrogen.
He answered "Yes, 78%", that satisfied the customer.

N2 Refractive n = 1.00029839
CO2 Refractive n = 1.00044892

But sunlight can find those 0.04% CO2 molecules out of 78% N2 molecules and heat up the earth.

175 170 There's a former Otis elevator plant in Erie, PA, now used as a specialty plastics factory. The test tower for the cars still stands. It was sometimes used in dropping the cars to test braking systems. It must have been exciting when it didn't work.

177 Morning peeps

I'm looking at a graphical forecast for my location. Little clouds with rain drops for a solid 7 days. On one hand it will help fill the pool since it was rehabbed after being damaged, on the other it will push back the remaining work needed to be done on it (plumbing.)

Having stagnant water is just a huge invitation for all sorts of critters to make it home.

Should still come under the $14M inheritance threshold before taxes, but yeah, not getting the step up in basis on assets inherited upon the death of your parents who were using an irrevocable trust is going to put the sting to some 'soon to be very wealthy' trust fund kids inheriting Manhattan coops and apartments and the like...
