Don’t save Democrats from their own campus disaster

The Democrats are already facing a critical election in which they must run a deeply unpopular dementia patient against a former president who maintains a strong base of support despite being hit with an endless barrage of fake criminal charges. The very last thing the left wanted was a civil war on college campuses that exposed the disastrous contradictions at the heart of its coalition.
The only thing that could possibly rescue the Democrats from this nightmare scenario would be footage of Republican governors sending in police to violently silence protesters. This would bail out the establishment and allow mainstream liberals to put the woke vanguard in its place while pointing at the GOP as the real enemy, a unifying symbol of authority to hate.
I know the gut instinct of the right is to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory, but the GOP must sit on its hands and let this play out.

You can always count on the GOP to do the wrong thing. What say you? Leave them alone, or bust some heads.

Excluding potentially eligible individuals because of their anticipated group allocation can lead to selection bias.
It’s common knowledge that early treatment of COVID-19 is crucial for effective results. The earlier the treatment starts, the more effective it is. These approved antivirals for COVID-19 are used shortly after COVID-19 infection and usually within a few days after symptom onset.
For example, Paxlovid and molnupiravir registration trials treated patients within only five days of symptom onset. However, in the PRINCIPLE trial, ivermectin was used for patients within 14 days of symptom onset, while ACTIV-6 treated patients an average of six days after infection.

I'm not shocked. One treatment protocol was worth billions to drug companies, and the other worthless. Why would anyone be shocked?

Middle schoolers who protested trans athlete’s participation are banned from future competitions

Five West Virginia middle schoolers who protested a transgender athlete’s participation in a track and field competition have been barred from future meets — prompting the state attorney general to ask the US Supreme Court to weigh in on transgender student-athlete bans for a second time.
West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey filed a lawsuit against the Harrison County Board of Education on the dissenting students’ behalf after they were blocked from upcoming meets following their protests at the April 18 shot put competition, West Virginia Watch reported.
Five girls from Lincoln Middle School stepped up to the circle for their turn before refusing to throw in the event, which was won by Becky Pepper-Jackson, a 13-year-old girl who takes puberty-blocking medication and estrogen hormone therapy.
While West Virginia law bans transgender girls from playing on girls’ sports teams, a recent federal appeals court ruled that the law couldn’t lawfully be applied to the eighth-grader.

So these girls refused to compete against the boy (And good for them, we need more of that), and now they've been banned from sports. There's a lot of resentment building out there, it's not going to be pretty when it breaks.

I would say let the colleges suffer their own consequences, sit back and get out some popcorn, but...

There are local elections too. I think those students that lost out on education and/or were harrassed should sue the schools for not keeping their "commitment" to a "safe" "learning" environment. Police should go in there only after being explicitly allowed to go in (with the WRITTEN permission broadcast on radio, TV and internet), IF the ROE are sufficiently protective of the police. That way, any backfire goes to the University.

Those involved in the rioting are in public rioting and have therefore waived their rights to anonymity.

90 I'm sitting next to a 7'x8' art deco oak panel frescoe done in 1941 by Louis Ross, who did murals for the 1939 World's Fair, and collaborated for more than 25 years with Hildreth Meiere, working on the Nebraska State Capitol Rotunda, One Wall Street lobby, and decorative elements inside and outside Rockefeller Center. During WWII when there were no large art projects, they made over a hundred religious triptychs for Catholic, Protestant, and Jewish worship by troops all over the world.

I rescued the panel from demolition from a baking company headquarters right across the street from Madison Square Garden. My wife drove our van from Riverdale, Bronx, down the West Side Highway to pick it up. Too big to fit inside the van we tied it on the roof. It's been here in NC since 1988 and still looks beautiful. It's title is "What's in a Donut" and has cows, chicken, barn, chicken coop, a microscope, spices, wheat, farmers, spices, pictured with bright colors on raised plaster with lots of gold and silver leaf. I'm sure no one else has one. It is signed and dated 1941. That's my art deco story.

In grade school we had a retired OSS agent come in and give us a talk. He was bright, witty, friendly, stoic, and gave a great presentation. Opened it up for questions and never missed a beat. May have been the first time I saw the world differently (and not in a Julia Child way). Long time ago and I remember quite a bit of what he talked about.

Most of the band IS Russian. The founder, is Siberian, and the band was formed, in Siberia.

One of the (constantly alternating) Lead Singers, is from Ukraine. And he greatly resembles a certain Moron who one might meet in Corsicana, were one to attend the Texas Mo Meet.

Reminds me, in Catholic school, around 5th grade, in the mid '60s, one classmate's father, who had been a captive of the Japanese in WWII and survived Bataan, gave us a talk, 2 classrooms, maybe 40-45 kids. That one stuck with me, as he talked about the beatings that still plagued him (he walked very stiffly because of the damage they did to his back). Needless to say, he wasn't very kind in describing the Japanese. Not the whole truth, mind you, just enough to let his hatred still show through. After all, it had only been a couple of decades earlier the man went through that hell, not like 50 years earlier.

Back then, learning reality made you appreciate safe spaces, not making safe spaces reality.

Where I live we had what we called neighborhood cats - friendly to all, roved from house to house, obviously domesticated but not clear who they belonged to. Over time, the whole neighborhood got to taking turns putting out food for them. We'd usually get it cleared away come night time, but there were occasions when it was overlooked.

That attracted the attentions of possums, who could be chased away with no trouble, but one enterprising raccoon locked onto it with his scavenger radar. He was beyond intimidation. After being chased away a few nights, he decided that the chance of some illicit Friskies was just too tempting. I heard him rustling through the bowls, which were empty, of course, I threw the light on and charged out. He just paused and looked at me with an expression that I swear resembled a pissed-off George Costanza. His look and his posture gave off a "What, whaddya want? I'm tryin to eat here!" vibe. He wobbled off with a disgusted air and it took me quite a while to stop laughing.

Now I'm a gonna go out on a spindly limb here and say that's not even close. Katana all the way. Katanas are light, easily maneuverable swords great for quick slicing and dicing. Claymores, while having a better reach than katanas, are extremely heavy and require some effort, making their use a bit slower. That 'bit' for a samurai holding a katana is enough.

Katanas are for quick battles, not extended dueling/slashing and hacking like claymores.

439 Perhaps OT, but I admit I haven't the slightest clue what Russia is really after in Ukraine. I mean, the strategic goal is to fix a line and partition, and reduce Zelensky to non-threat status and for him and all his Godless fucksticks to not lob ordnance across the new border like a pack of subhuman Gazans, but otherwise I have zero idea what the Russian goals are.
It's entirely possible Russia is fighting Ukraine bloodless for the sole purpose of being left alone.
It's also entirely possible there is some long game there I don't see at the moment.
I know the strategy of 'The West', which is to utterly destroy Russia. They're still hysterically enraged they didn't get to wreck the place permanently in the 1990s due to Putin stopping them. I don't believe Russia even wants the rest of Ukraine. I also think annexing Poland was the biggest mistake Russia ever made, and to try to repeat it either by force or diplomacy would be both stupid and crazy, neither of which Putin is.
I just find it hard to believe after all this Russia is going to be happy with a purely defensive outcome ending in stasis. It would take impressive self-control to resist absolutely crushing Zelensky.

Working in the oil patch in Alberta, I was used to getting explicit driving directions to the rig location. They were invariably exactly right. "From Edson, west on Hwy. 16 to Range Road 17-4, turn right, proceed 14.5 km north, take a left, then proceed 4.4 km west, turn right, and 2.2 km into location." Follow those directions explicitly, you will get there. If I knew the area well, I could take shortcuts. But heavy trucks would stick to those instructions, because they might not be permitted for alternate roads.

Funny one about directions. Local general store back in the day. People would stop there and ask directions to a golf course. There are two close by. This one was Fox Run (you can look that up, Fox Run in Simpsonville, SC).

Well, Billy, the owner at the time, got impatient with all that one time. I and the lunch crowd was there, and this guy comes in asks how to get to Fox Run. Without even looking up, Billy says, "Go back up the road, take aleftfttakearighttakealefttakearightboughthalfamile.

Left, right, left, right, then about 1/2 mile. That was correct.

Ol' Red Brown would give directions to Fox Run when he was hanging out there. He said take a right at the Woodman Hall, then a left, then a right. The Woodman hall hadn't been at that spot for decades.

Nobody reads signs, labels, pays attention to any of the carefully constructed layouts of a modern retail establishment. They navigate by shapes, colors and relational objects. I can't count how many times I've had people completely thrown by a label change on a product. A lot of the time, they don't even know the brand names of items they've bought for years, just the colors and shapes on the containers and where they are in relation to other items in the store.
When the store gets too chaotic and we have to reset and move stuff around, people are lost for MONTHS. Sometimes years. Some people never recover and give up even trying to find staple items they bought for years.

If there is a steep climb to reach the rig, they may have a Cat and operator on the lease to tow trucks up the hill. Usually the drilling supe will tell suppliers, "send a 4X4 tractor with that load of mud, and we will give you a Cat tow if the driver spins out." And if they send a 4X2 tractor, and it spins out, the drilling supe will bitch like Hell, and send the Cat out anyway, because they really, really need that load of mud.

It's a life insurance company now, or part of it is.

I remember tales of the Initiation Ceremonies for the Woodmen, which happened at the local Woodmen Hall. It was apparently stressful and a test of one's true character.

For the most part, nobody pays the slightest attention to anything around them and are totally immersed in their own little world and goals. The avenue is there for them to get where they are going and anything else is either unimportant or an obstruction.

And that exact same things happens on the relatively "flat" West Texas Permian Basin drilling sites.

Although there are no mountains there, not even any prominent peaks, the "flat" landscape is riven by many a valley, crevasse, gulley or crease.

Give that west Texas red soil a spot of rain, and you've never seen such a snot-slicked greasy stretch of unpassable road, until you're there, and have to deal with.

You'll never be able to wash the red stains out of your clothes, no matter how hard you try. And your clothes ARE going to become stained.

Because you're going to slip and fall down when you try to affix the tow straps to pull you out of what doesn't even LOOK like a mudhole. But, is.
