Home health care nurse - a really good guy about to change jobs - was going through the usual questions with the new gal on my case.
Got to questions about emergency arrangements, and he asked,"So, no DNR?" I said "No, no DNR. In fact, I have a proviso they should murder a hobo and harvest his organs if that's what it takes to keep me alive." He had the heartiest belly-laugh I'd heard in a long, long time. I don't remember from which Moron I stole that joke several moons back, but I'd been waiting for a good chance to use it and found a good one. Glad the guy had a Moron-worthy sense of humor! First of all, it allows Macron to send troops to Ukraine and act like a tough guy without encountering much home opposition. That’s because no French army soldiers are being sent and there is no consequent conscription or other measures in the offing. This clearly reduces the potential fury of Macron’s political opponents.
The second reason is Macron’s anger at seeing French troops, almost all from the Legion, getting kicked out of Sahelian Africa and replaced by Russians. Control of Francophone Africa, and the riches it provides to French politicians, has been broken by the revolt and revolution in Africa and a decisive tilt to Russia – either directly or through PMC Wagner (the Wagner Group). now clearly under Vladimir Putin’s direct control. This “humiliation” is felt in the Élysée Palace and particularly by Macron who, his opponents say, has lost France’s influence and harmed France’s overseas mining and business interests. A particular blow is in Niger, an important supplier of uranium to France. France gets 70 percent of its electrical power from nuclear power generators. --Asia Times Posted by: andycanuck (UfUdn) at May 04, 2024 11:29 PM (UfUdn) 344

Just finished watching Lethal Weapon for the first time in *mumblety* years and...was it always so corny? I mean it was really good but holy shit it is jut a tad dated. For some reason I can't help compare it to Highlander in a certain regard. Came out shortly before Lethal Weapon, stars a Frenchman playing a Scotsman wielding a freakin' samurai sword and was produced by fuckin' *Cannon Films* and holds up a lot better. Weird. But goddamn Lethal Weapon really works on the strength of its cast. Mel Gibson as the psycho cop? Danny Glover as the kind of anti-Cosby with the slutty teenage daughter? Drug trafficking mercenaries? I'm sold. But then you have bits of Gibson dropping and rolling on the ground to shoot a guy on a platform five feet over his position. Talk about magic bullets! Lethal Weapon also had Gary Busey prior to cocaine eating his brain away. He played that role to the hilt. It was great! A couple of really solid character actors, Mitchel Ryan and Tom Atkins, and you have a great action film. I haven't watched LW is a long while. Never thought about if it has aged well. Finding it was likely to overblow, we took in our sprit-sail, and stood by to hand the fore-sail; but making foul weather, we looked the guns were all fast, and handed the mizen. The ship lay very broad off, so we thought it better spooning before the sea, than trying or hulling. We reefed the fore-sail and set him, and hauled aft the fore-sheet; the helm was hard a-weather. The ship wore bravely. We belayed the fore down-haul; but the sail was split, and we hauled down the yard, and got the sail into the ship, and unbound all the things clear of it.

It was a very fierce storm; the sea broke strange and dangerous. We hauled off upon the laniard of the whip-staff, and helped the man at the helm. We would not get down our topmast, but let all stand, because she scudded before the sea very well, and we knew that the top-mast being aloft, the ship was the wholesomer, and made better way through the sea, seeing we had sea-room. When the storm was over, we set fore-sail and main-sail, and brought the ship to. Then we set the mizen, main-top-sail, and the fore-top-sail. Our course was east-north-east, the wind was at south-west. We got the starboard tacks aboard, we cast off our weather-b

Okra. Mmm! Gonna plant a bunch of it this year.
I grew some in containers a couple years ago-- just about the only plant what could tolerate the heat on our deck! 9 plants provided about one batch of fried okra per week for 2 of us. Not quite enough. So. This year, will plant *moar* containers of it, and put them on the deck. Lovely plants, nice & big, pretty flowers and attractive leaves... More okra for us, too! Can freeze any extra for later. Posted by: JQ at May 05, 2024 03:28 AM (njWTi) 543
James Mason and Thunderbird mentioned upstream - while he's genial in that rather unique commercial, the man was one of the greatest on-screen villains ever, and it amazed me to this day that he did it without any schtick, leering expressions, or sinister smiles.
He was menacing simply by being extremely polite and civilized - check out North By Northwest or his oddest role ever in Salem's Lot. The man did not raise his voice, and seldom if ever got physical. He somehow evoked feelings of fear by being very civilized and British. On the Frog side of the ledger, Louis Jordan could manage that, but I'm unable to think of any current actor who could quite pull that off. You don't act evil, you somehow, for want of a better term, radiate it into the camera lens. No DSMV dead-eyed sociopath display, no eccentricities. Just a polite, mild. serious demeanor that on any other actor would communicate no hint of a threat. Posted by: John Drake Nearing The Caspian Sea at May 05, 2024 03:53 AM (u/Zei) 544
