Not sure how it was legal, but each hour worked over 40 per week was paid at half rate. The week I worked 80 hours on the clock was demoralizing. I would have preferred to be classified as exempt from overtime rather than have my hourly rate lower than a Wendy's drive-thru hostess.

This is easily my favorite site on the web, and I've sent plenty of bucks to Ace and JJ. But AOS is also the ugliest, most primitive, and poorly functioning website still in existence. Pixy does not seem interested in improving the situation, and I wonder, does Ace? There are coders and designers—I among them—in Ace's readership who could bring the site into the 2020s. Probably on a volunteer basis, even.

I started CJN on a shoestring, do all of the maintenance, and it is far more robust than AoSHQ.
The basic issue is that Pixy has modified a 2002 blog without updating it...at all. So literally nothing works as it should, and there have been no improvements.
We actually post manually. No scheduling! We can't embed music, and the only reason we can embed videos is because of Maetenloch!
Some of the cobloggers are just sick and f*cking tired of it. We have to do far more work than is necessary because of Pixy's shit.

Just finished 'Father's Day' episode of 'Doctor Who' with Eccleston and Billie Piper. Piper was cute, even though she was a tiny bit thick. I REALLY liked those two together.

Attended a celebration party for a BIL about 15 years ago. Normally I would not have gotten a seat at his table but we brought Mom so we got to sit at the main table. Sat right next to his golf buddies Mark Rypien and Craig Ehlo. I was a huge Coug fan when they were playing. My BIL was a big supporter of Rypien's foundation and Ehlo was his neighbor. Good question. The whole issue of his preexisting medical problems and lethal level of drugs in his system was pretty much ignored in the media. While I could probably write a replacement, as could others here, the hosting also needs to be handled. It's the coordination of the old and new software and content, and of any hosting changes, where it gets tricky. I added a new overlay written in assembly code to a data program (named Super Spectrum by its original coder) that collected date from a Cary UV-visible spectrophotometer equipped to measure circular dichroism of samples in solution. The program ran on a PDP-8e and originally dumped each spectrum out to punched paper tape. When the Lawrence Berkeley Lab computing center, where we processed the papers tapes to render our spectra useable, announced that they were retiring their paper tape reader, that's when I added the capability for it to send the spectra direct to LBL via phone lines. Wowee-zowee!
Anyway, my point to be made is that I preserved the entire PDP-8e program in printout form on microfiche and put the fiche films at the back of my published thesis. Now, could I understand those programs today? Oh, hell no! What's even better is that today, with the nearly complete disappearance of microfiche readers in repositories of knowledge, I'd be hard pressed to even find a device to view them.

I'm discovering the limitations of the "tipping bucket", actually tipping spoon in this WS-2000 weather station's case. Daily rainfall period is midnight to midnight (which can be changed). We had a little bit of rain before midnight, but it wasn't enough to trip the bucket.
The bucket tripped just a few minutes, and tripped again soon after, a little more rain started.
So a proper record should record yesterday as "trace" amount of precipitation, then zero out at midnight. That's the limitation of these types of rain collectors.

I might still be able to read some of the earliest production code I wrote. What's funny is that I still remember some of the C++ class hierarchies from then, because I had to break one of those design rules (diamond inheritance) to make it all work correctly.
