(5/11/24)The Weekend Hobby Thread

IMG_4027.JPG

Nothing like spending $100 bill at your favorite Mom & Pop Sport Shop.

Welcome to The Weekend Hobby Thread. So what has been you keeping you busy with your hobbies and/or projects? We would love to hear about them.

So feel free to join in about the wide world of hobbies.

Please leave politics and current events outside at the curb. Preferably by the garbage cans.

*****

*****

Hobbies also include projects around the home front as well. Our pal Jim submitted the following:

Another project at Casa Sunk New Dawn

Herself wanted to eliminate all possible Comcast. We have to keep 'em for internet, but ditching their TV altogether.

My trusty I.T. expert has installed a lot of OTA antennas, and told me to mount mine 20 ft. up, for best effect, to better "see" the transmitters up in the 50 mile distant Houston locations.

This is the result. 20 ft. length of 1-1/4" I.D., galvanized, Schedule 40 steel pipe. The three upper "radials" are 3/4" I.D., galvanized, Schedule 40 steel pipe. The base plate and round guy-wire retaining plate at top, are 3/16" plate steel.

Base plate is hinged, and bolted to 3/8" steel rebar in 12" deep concrete foundation.

At present, the tower carries an OTA TV antenna, which can be turned a full 360 degrees, electric motor driven, via remote controller which is inline with the coax, at the TV entertainment center. The other device is a bluetooth connected Weather Station, and it's readout/display is pictured in the series.

The juncture box is where the aerials and house cabling are joined. Breaking these connections, un-hooking the guy wires and unbolting the soffit brace collars, allow the tower to be lowered for maintenance or upgrades. Mounts (not pictured) for a 3:1 block and tackle are affixed and used for lowering and raising the tower.

The guy wires have mounts fabricated from 3/16" plate, at two (reinforced) points at the fascia level, and one on a 7 ft. tall, 2-1/2" I.D. black steel pipe, set 3 ft. deep via 2 bags of concrete, out by the back fence. Guy wires are 1/8" dia. galvanized, turning at stainless thimbles and stainless turnbuckles. Swaged at three points at each connection. 3rd swaging lug is slightly out of pic, as it also covers the cut end of the wire.

The center-top of the main pole and the empty 3rd radial, can/might/eventually will be used to carry some kind of HAM radio antenna(s).

Am reading up for Technician and General licenses, and will earn same and work with experienced Radio Operators, before deciding on Transceiver and Antenna hardware options.

This build performed by your humble servant:

I would appreciate it if our humble servant Jim would gallivant his way up this way for help with a project like this. Great project Jim, it really looks solid down there in Hurricane Lane.

Last weekend's Hobby Thread hosted by TRex focused on tools. This then encouraged Kindlot to submit the following video. Pretty interesting after all these years. Thank you Kindlot.

You have probably heard by now that I underwent surgery earlier in the week. Now that I'm laid up I have to find something to keep my busy. And fishing and painting are out of the question, so says Dr. The Fabulous.

So here is what I'm going to try:

This should be interesting. I can't sketch or draw to save my life.

To be honest with you folks, I would rather be doing this. This particular river runs through our cabin property. However, it's a pretty small stream in that section.

Well, this wraps up another Weekend Hobby Thread. I'm not sure who will be here next week. But, I know all of you will be on your best behavior with bright, shiny faces. Until we meet again, Keep On Hobbying!

Posted by: Misanthropic Humanitarian, with new wheel at May 11, 2024 05:45 PM (QXQ4l)

10 This morning was car, truck, and big truck morning.
Oil drained all 3, new filter on the first 2 and new synthetic added to them, on the third, after draining the oil, and draining the filter (love the guy that tightened the oil pan bolt: NOT, and the guy that installed the filter drain cover: NOT) I found that my existing tools were no match for the tundra filter housing.
New one on order and it will arrive at the end of next week.
The tundra is grounded until I find out if I bought a filter wrench strong enough to beat the gorilla that installed it the last time.

28 Glad to hear your surgery went well, hopefully your recovery follows suit. I did alot of pastels and charcoal in my teenage years....don't go for precision or you'll be totally frustrated. People have different preferences, but I always used my fingers to blend and blur. Can be very rewarding in a very different sort of way. Oh, and once you're finished, spraying it prevents unintentional further blending and blurring. Have fun with it!

30 The Lego guitar looked pretty neat. And timely. For the past couple weekends I've been spending a couple hours disassembling some of my old Lego sets. Partly to add the pieces to 'the boneyard' for use in future MOCs, and partially just so I have room on my shelves for the new sets I plan to build.

Sadly, I broke a lot of pieces while disassembling The Old Fishing Store set. Well, not really 'a lot' but I broke more pieces in one sitting that usually break in a year. I don't know if Lego had some quality control issues when manufacturing the pieces for that set, or if too much time on display (and possibly in the sun) just left them brittle...

31 I was bleeding brakes also this week. Been working on VW Bus doing punch list items. Drove it on a couple short rides, but it could be better. Going to adjust carburetor tomorrow, maybe adjust timing again too. Got involved in some needed weeding and planting, so no mechanic work today.

I will take/send some pics of bus hopefully soon.

33 I went shopping today. Bought a dress and shoes to wear to the boy spawn wedding also got a skirt and blouse with shoes for the girl spawn graduation. I hate shopping and have not worn an actual dress in decades. Skirts yes, dresses no. Found good pieces quickly and easily.
Yesterday I had to parallel park twice and nailed it both times. I haven't done that in decades either.

Is the world about to end?

I will never understand why some women consider shopping to be a fun hobby.

41 As for my pipe smoking and pipe collecting hobby: I ordered samples of two blends new to me this week. And Miss Linda is dragging me to a neighborhood event tonight, a kind of street fair where many of the merchants stay open late and offer free samples of cheese and wine. I mention it because one vendor on the route is a local pipe-and-cigar shop.

I don't *need* anything for my pipe stash. Well, if they have pipe freshener fluid, I'll get some . . . but buying a half pint of cheap vodka at Walmart would be cheaper and work just as well.

For my brother and me, a trip to the department store annex where they sold the clearance items was torture. No toys or models or books. And "Shoe Town" was another swear word to us. As I grew up, I liked shopping for clothes on occasion. But now I seem to have just about everything I need or want. Maybe some older shirts need to go and be replaced eventually, but I don't make shopping expeditions very often any more. (Too much $$$ unless they're on sale -- which is not often enough.)

One value is I can see a bunch of ways to improve them which means I'm learning to see. Glad I have so much inexpensive drawing paper as it will take a LOT of practice to work out the details I want to improve. Capturing the delicate curls of a peony flower is difficult. But I'm enjoying the learning process.

Basically all the ratchet handles, wrenches, and extensions. Not doing the sockets, screw that. I was trying to make room for a few things I picked up recently. Yeah, thats not happening. Its as consolidated as it will ever be. There is no room at the Inn. I would upgrade but I hate the layouts of the newer boxes, too much wasted space with their idiot drawer configurations.

If you have the space you could drive a screwdriver through the filter and tap it with a hammer to loosen it or get leverage another way. This works everytime... unless you plan on reusing the filter.

165 >>Will mackerel take a lure? They are pretty tasty. To me, fishing ain't fishing if I have to throw them all back. Grew up fishing for salmon and other yummy fish in Howe Sound near Vancouver.

Bonito run around here at the same time as the falsies and they will hit on the same lures. Not as much fun to catch but not bad. They are ok eating.

Both are small, inshore cousins of more common eating tuna like blue fin, yellow fin, etc..

166 Actually, bonito are in the mackerel family. I meant to say figthing cousins of more common yada, yada.

I liked smoked mackerel and bonito, when the bonito were running in the Santa Barbara channel the 1/2 day boats would have fun with them.

They're a bunch of fun. We go with light tackle which makes it even more fun.

169 The false albacore fishing makes me think of ladyfish in the St. Pete Beach area. They are like little silver torpedos, maybe a foot or 18 inches, no good to eat but fun to catch on light tackle. They move fast and hit the bait or lure a ton for such small fish. People usually went for them from seawalls or causeways. I saw more than one unattended rod pulled into the water when they hit, followed by some colorful exclamations.

Prayers up for Nurse Ratched as she undergoes and recovers from an appendectomy.

Last I checked in, Nurse was trying to decide to accept a date or not for Saturday....I guess this answers that question - unless I have my Saturdays mixed up...

That was the last time I used one of those services.
Had to drive a screwdriver through the walls of the filter and lever it off.

173 I know the Tyler Forks river very well. Grew up close and fished there a lot...mostly brook trout. Was up there last summer and fished for those same brookies--headwaters at Moore Park, it is at the end of the road.

174 In early, from work.

Thank you all, for your kind words as regards the tower, antenna and weather station.

And prayers up for nurse, as well. Bet her date never heard THAT as a reason before, right?

Could be a P17 or a P14, but since the film is American it most likely is a P17.

176 I have been an ocean fisherman since 8 years old in SoCal.
Going out on the party boats out of San Pedro with my dad and then, years later, taking my sons out also from San Pedro to fish the waters off Catalina for Yellow Tail, Rock Fish and White Sea Bass. I have always wanted to acquire the rigs that the known boat "spoilers" bring aboard (Captain's friends) (to boost the fish totals on a trip) yet they always seemed get the coveted back rail positions which always pissed me off especially when we arrived at "O-Dark 30" before them.

Just free forming a rant of little value tonight...but still.

The AR-15 is a military weapon, an assault rifle, for use in combat zones and war. The semi-automatic weapon can fire hundreds of rounds a minute, but is not designed for an urban criminal setting.
Young criminals armed with such lethal weapons often end up doing as much, if not more harm to themselves, than others.
It is not easy to handle firearms, particularly complex military grade weapons.
The gang even put out a request on social media for information or instructions on how to use the AR-15.
"Anyone know how to use this thing", or words to that effect, were posted the night before.
