I threw away the cassette tapes that I recorded myself, but I kept the purchased cassette tapes because I have a Sony Cassette player as part of my stereo component system. And the turntable is a smooth, lovely item that my brother found for me second hand.

Beautiful picture up top, definitely a place for daydreaming. Also reminds me of both Virgin of the Rocks by da Vinci and Miranda by Waterhouse. All three beautiful.

Also, also... broccoli, cauliflower, and brussel sprouts are delicious. I have no idea about okra, but in my imagination it is slimy like cooked spinach, so no thanks.

    At first, it's voluntary.

Next, the doctor's will decide to cut off treatment and give the suicide option to their patients victims.

Eventually it will be mandatory for certain people if the doctors say that's what's best.

161 Two very encouraging polls from PA today.

    AARP/ Fabrizio Anzalone has Trump +4 in the H2H, & +5 in the 5-way.

Muhlenberg College has Trump +3 in the H2H.

These are both registered voters (RVs) polls, too, which is excellent, because Trump polls better when "all adults" are polled, and RVs vote in much greater proportion than "all adults" do.

Many of Trump's AA & Hispanic supporters are very iffy about actually voting.

The conventional wisdom is that Trump has a BETTER chance in MI than PA, so again... very encouraging. Possible indication that the show trial isn't producing the predicted effect of hurting Trump, too.

289 209 Well, I have officially crossed over to the Dark Side. My self-milled 80% lower is now mated up to a complete 9 mm upper and 16" barrel. I dumped the slug and powder out of a 9 mm round, and was able to insert it in the chamber and fire the primer, so it looks like it will at least fire the first round loaded. Remains to be seen if it will eject and cycle properly. Looks like an excursion to the desert is on the agenda.

I was all set to buy one, when I realized it only has HDMI video ports. I don't think I have one HDMI monitor. I have an unused SSD at home. I will install that in a used PC, and load it with Linux Mint, and see how that runs. My computing demands are very modest.

    Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon

It's why I haven't bought one yet. I do have a spare monitor, it's not HDMI though. I would have to get an adapter first. Can't recall if it's DVI or Serial. I think its DVI. The plan is to get a Beelink mini pc with some variety of Linux on it already. I saw one on Amazon with Ubuntu installed.

Posted by: Stateless at May 07, 2024 11:18 PM (jvJvP)

Might be true for Ontario, and maybe Manitoba, but out West we got Seattle channels in British Columbia, and Spokane in Alberta.

UHF was channels 14 through 83, and the tuner didn't "click" between channels, it rotated smoothly like a radio tuner. I don't recall there being any UHF stations in B.C. or Alberta. By the time there was a "need" for extra channels, cable was so entrenched that they simply began offering a large number of "cable-only" channels. Cablw TV grew big in Canada before it did down South, because Canada typically had only two networks, and viewers were clamoring for the USA channels. I remember getting cable from a neighborhood provider in 1963. A guy a couple of blocks up the hill from us had a very tall tower with antennas that could reliably get the Bellingham and Seattle stations, and he had amplifiers, and sold the signal around the neighborhood, quite cheaply.

Hitler doesn't really deserve credit for designing the VW Beetle. He expressed a desire to see a "peoples' car" built and sold, and issued a list of price and performance criteria it had to meet. Only Ferdinand Porsche's design came anywhere close to matching Der Fuhrer's wish list.

Well, the car got built, but few, if any, got delivered to retail buyers. German workers were encouraged to put money aside in special savings accounts in the Postal Savings Banks to buy VW's, and none of them ever saw a car or a dime of that money. And the factory was shifted over to production of Kubelwagens for the war effort. Anna Puma is Horde authority on the saga of VW, by the way.

And I think the soviets also scammed their workers in the same way, stealing savings for cars that never were delivered.

    Posted by: Matthew Kant Cipher

Thanks for the translation, Matthew! I was having trouble with the lyrics - like why isn't he saying das Geld and why not das Schloss when that's clearly the sense and meaning he's trying to convey. But seeing that it was Bairisch makes it clear. (Or at least as clear as Bairisch can be - it gives you a headache if Hochdeutsch is your preferred Sprachen.)

Fun little addendum - some of the proverbial references in the song remind me of an over-the-top German curse. The closest English rendering is "May he die from a lightning strike while he takes a shit." Werner Herzog actually used that one at a commencement address and the crowd loved it. Deutschland is a unique place.

Essentially the Soviets did that thing through until glasnost.
It wasn't so much putting investments aside in the bank for consumer goods, it was more along the lines of having nothing available to buy, so the money went into the state bank funds.
the USSR had massive inflation hidden by shortages. Once there was access to foreign goods was allowed the money came out of the bank, into the market and the inflation took off like a rocket. That more than anything destroyed the USSR.

What we all learned from the Covid debacle was that the "experts" are bought and paid for, and cannot be trusted. There were extravagant claims on both sides of the debate, and I think at least part of that is that the vaxxes which were pushed were inconsistent in quality and potency, to say the least. I am pretty certain the politicos and celebrities who took the vaxx got saline solution, since none of them ever seemed to develop the side effects reported by the plebes, but many of them did get Covid, and got over it.

Tinyurl is trying to turn itself into a paid subscription service, and it is not going well. What they should do is ask users to view an ad, not an ad video, just a "flat" page, and "rate" the ad by checking a box, before being directed to the shortener page. Like this:

[ ] The ad was inoffensive, and actually offered something I might use.

[ ] I endured viewing the ad, but I'm simply not in the market for that class of product/service.

[ ] The ad sucked syphilitic donkey dick, and the vendors should be hung, drawn, and quartered.

Such ratings might actually be useful to the advertisers, and if giving them is fun for the user, then the ads get read, and nobody suffers.

One of the biggest changes was that while I was working, I always tried to not worry about work stuff on weekends, however, Sunday night I would mentally prepare for going back on Monday morning. Thinking about meetings I had scheduled, left over problems from the previous week I needed to deal with, project status, read email to see what had blown up over the weekend, that kind of thing.

Thing is, if you are running that scam, you don't tell the minor pols that they are getting the placebo; you let them believe they got the real thing, and they will be convinced it works, and help peddle the narrative. You don't want the minor pols dying of blood clots at age 51. That sort of thing tends to make the news.

Well now, the result of last week's competition when we asked you to find a derogatory term for the Belgians. Well, the response was enormous and we took quite a long time sorting out the winners. There were some very clever entries. Mrs. Hatred of Leicester Said 'let's not call them anything, let's just ignore them' ... (applause starts vigorously, but he holds his hands up for silence) ... and a Mr. St John of Hurtfingdou said he couldn't think of anything more derogatory than Belgians. (cheers and applause; a girl in showgirl costume comes on and holds up placards through next bit) But in the end we settled on three choices: number three ... the Sprouts (placard 'The Sprouts'), sent in by Mrs. Vicious of Hastings... very nice ; number two..... the Phlegms (placard) ... from Mrs. Childmolester of Worthing; but the winner was undoubtedly from Mrs. No-Supper-For-You from Norwood in Lancashire ... Miserable Fat Belgian Bastards. (placard; roar of applause) Very good - thank you, Carol.

The polio vax doesn't prevent you from getting polio, it just lessens the severity. So only one leg is paralyzed, just from the knee down, so you walk funny for a while instead of being crippled for life.

No. That's not how real vaccines work. Real vaccines are 95%+ effective at preventing the targeted disease, and have a vanishing small rate of harmful side effects.

The China virus vaxes were ineffective, and to the extent they had any preventative effect, the effect was short-lived, hence the need for frequent boosters, and worst of all, had serious side effects that are only now being revealed.

The vax companies saw an opportunity to make several butt-loads of money and the politicians saw an opportunity to impose more control over the populace. Greed and incompetence at work.

477 "Murder Under Glass" - a Columbo episode wherein he is wined and dined by the best chefs in town as he works to solve the murder of one of their beloved group.
    Posted by: Miley, okravangelist

A fun one that was, and it taught two important lessons: never trust Louis Jourdan, and examine corkscrews carefully before using them.

It's weird how Peter Falk always claimed Columbo wasn't smart, that he was only someone with an eye for detail and dogged perseverance. The writing of the episodes never seemed to indicate that, though. Columbo was incredibly observant and unstoppable, but he also had a keen understanding of human psychology and could size people up instantly. His ruse of playing a clueless oaf was something he adapted to fit a particular person and their unique quirks. To me, he was someone who didn't suffer from the Dunning-Kruger effect, and that always gave him an advantage over the perps, who always did have that problem.

The very last episode of Columbo is "Columbo loves the night life", 2003, I think. It's a bit different in that the murder is depicted as a real one would be, messy and not going exactly as the murderer intended. The victim fought back and died hard.

Anyway, Peter Falk wanted to make one more episode of Columbo, but dementia got him. They said there at the last he didn't even remember who Columbo was.

581 I retired last summer and it took me a while to get used to it.
After retiring, I still found myself on Sunday nights starting to think about preping for work the next morning. Took a couple of months to break that habit.

I'll be ditching my work medical insurance shortly now that I've bought a Medicare supplement plan, but I didn't get vision coverage at this point. So better to use the vision part while I still have it. (Not much of a discount, though.)

My choice was a pair of gold-rimmed aviator-style glasses, much like the shades I keep in the car. Aside from shades I have never worn glasses; my reading and distance vision are both still excellent. It'll take some getting used to. Maybe the new lenses will make print a bit sharper.

Yeah, that's it. They have an Uptown branch, but it's hard to get to without beating up my car, and impossible to park near. The suburban store is much better.

When I go to Indiana later this summer, I plan to stop off at The Briary near Birmingham. Wonderful shop, housed in a modest bungalow, with shaded parking and a strong emphasis on pipes as well as some cigars. In '21 I bought one of my favorite pipes, a vintage straight Mastercraft: $35. You don't have to spend $$$ to get a good pipe.

(Disclaimer: I don't know what coverage is available to you, or which company you may choose)

When I had "vision coverage" at work-- the coverage was barely adequate. IIRC, was 200 frames and 75 lenses, the rest was out-of-pocket for me.

    You guessed it! I need multi-focal. $$$$$

*All* the frames were around 200, except thick black 'birth-control' styles.

    Coatings? (anti-glare, anti-reflective, photo-gray) "not covered"

Out of pocket all the way, and you can use the coupons that some eyewear outfits issue-- "not good with any insurance" and come out $$$ ahead.

Stirling earned his keep when still a kitten by spotting several wasps which got into my apartment at different times. His kitten crazies were worth putting up with just for that.

669 Well, you could get a part time job to pay for that, Wolfus.

My Part B, Plan G and Silverscript is less than $350/mo right now. Of course it will go up every year I remain alive.

    Right?

Posted by: Miley, okravangelist at May 08, 2024 04:23 AM (w6EFb)

670 "medicare advantage" (IMO) is for basically healthy people, not those with any chronic or anticipated problems.

Plan G is rather expensive, comparatively, but still *much cheaper* than any ZeroCare plan that we under-65s must choose!

Also, Plan G eliminates all out-of-pocket besides the medicare annual copay of.. what, I don't recall, but it's less than $200.

Pfft! It's a no-brainer, if you have *any* issues with your health.

    That seems high.

Old Mama pays less, and her medical expenses were billed at $180,000 last year.

At this point, I really don't have much. The flirtation with Type II diabetes seems to be over thanks to my change in diet; my BP is under control with an inexpensive med. That's why I wonder if an Advantage, even one with a monthly premium, might not be better for me.
