Ah, for the good ol' days when the speedlimit in Montana was "reasonable and prudent". Too bad the truck I had really didn't like going much over 80.
As for that trip down the Gallatin Canyon south of Bozeman, you really don't want to go much over the speed limit, as there are lots of blind sharp curves, deer, elk, NPS speedtraps, and road-blocking RVs.
But why would you want to go to the West Yellowstone airport, anyhow?

March of 2023, the wife and I leave our home in a suburb southeast of Los Angeles, at 5:30 am to visit our daughter, son-in-law, and granddaughter in Idaho, about 20 miles west of Boise. Waze tells us we'll be there in 13.5 hours, so 6:30 pm our time, 7:30 pm, mountain time. We got there at 6:45 pm, mountain time. I beat Waze by 45 minutes...it was the proudest moment of my life. Ok...fourth proudest.

Stopping to see Little Big Horn would negate any time savings. You have to drive off the highway, and pay admission at the gate. Devils Tower can be seen splendidly from the highway.

We sold our house here in South Carolina last week. Closing June 10th then the long drive to our place in Wyoming.
Interestingly, I-80 around Rock Springs WY and I'm not sure how much of I-80 is involved, was built over an abandoned coal mine. Apparently 80 is collapsing and the state is going to start pumping cement into the mine.
We'll have a looooonnnnngggg drive home as we live about an hour east of Utah. I-80 is the way to go.
For news about Wyoming, Cowboy State website is excellent

I think it helps a lot to figure out your "speed of advance."

45 9+ hours of straight driving is all about rest stops. I consider where I can gas up the car without getting killed by locals during the hours of the trip, and also where the police might be stationed on some occasion.

In the before times I was driving to my sister place and asked what the speed limit was and she said as long as I wasn't driving recklessly a 'speeding ticket' was listed as wasting fuel and I'd better have a stack of 10s with me as if I didn't I'd get taken to jail.

A couple years again I had planned a road trip from Yellowstone to Devil's Tower and then to Mt. Rushmore.

Actually happened. Google (or mayb it was Siri) seemed to be sweet-talking me, but was giving rough advice to my wife. It told me the next turn I had to make (in pitch black darkness on a hillside at night) was to make a left turn coming up in 100 feet (or yards, don't remember). At that point, there was no left turn to make (over the edge of the hill) and state troopers were there on the other side. A bit un-nerving.

Pro-tip for those wanting to save some time (I've made the Bozeman to Billings trip over a thousand times):
Don't stop in Billings just to get gas and/or a meal. Stop in Columbus (just west of Billings) and get gas and McDonald's hamburgers at the Town Pump. This will save you an hour's worth of time since any stop in Billings will automatically result in an hour of traveling time.
Of course, the drawback is that you'll have to settle for MickyD's hamburgers, but it's what my family has always done for the past 20-30 years.

Get the Waze app, CBD, it maps out police presence with a little cop-head icon wherever they're hiding out. Also traffic snarl-ups, construction zones, accidents, pretty much everything a body needs to get you on down the road. Once you've used Waze for a little while, you'll wonder why the hell you ever wasted your time with Goolag for so long.

Google seems to be doing a poor job giving timely info. about road conditions - accidents, paving/infrastructure, detours - since C19. (Getting accident info. once past the accident area; reports of 'slow traffic' & asked to pick another route when there's no problem on the highway; not detecting miles of construction until driving through; odd rerouting requests, etc.) Bought & installed a new mapping card but it's proving to be no more efficient than the original from several years ago.
Google was used to track out-of-area & in-state driving during C19 so why would it be now be less efficient for personal use, I've wondered. /R

Google and really, all computer maps use the vaguest (pale) colors with little contrast and the smallest font size possible. Scroll in on the map and the text gets no larger. Why?

Because the text on a digital map is designed to be read at a certain size and appear no matter how much or where you zoom. Fixed text would mean you could only zoom to the part of the map where the text is. Note how the text appears on each street regardless of where on the street you zoom.

Back in the day (68 Firebird with 327 Corvette engine) I did a lot of trips from Colorado to central Illinois. I figured 50 miles covered for each hour, over the duration of the trip. With gas stops, pee breaks, traffic, etc., it usually came out pretty close.

I tried to go as fast as I could coming home to Louisiana from a ski trip in Colorado in 1981.

Back when it was the double-nickel for a speed limit, I was driving a little more than 80 mph east of Billings and wasn't really paying attention to who was behind me for about a five-minute stretch of time. When I did look back in my mirror, I noticed a Montana Highway Patrol vehicle about 100 yards behind me but without the lights on. I kept the speed and he zipped by me with a bored look on his face.
Usually back then, when we were speeding and the MHP were paying attention, they'd give you the "finger waggle" which meant if you slowed down they won't do anything to you.

It helps to know literally every bend, hill and likely speed trap spot.
I got one ticket in 5 years.
The trips back to Monterey were always a clusterfuck tho'.

Highway 17 was... interesting. At the hour I'd hit it traffic was typically light, so I'd use all of the available pavement when possible. 880 was empty at that hour, or nearly so. Plus people drove that strip of road at bug eye speeds anyway.

I pretty much ignore any GPS advice that takes me off the interstate.
I've found that the GPS is liable to lead you through small towns loaded with traffic lights if that map shows even the tiniest one mile or so difference in length, even if it takes you an extra 2 hours to get where you're going.
My favorite GPS advice was when I was taking one of the kiddos to lacrosse tournament and needed to hurry to the airport to catch a flight and Apple maps wanted me to drive across a lake to get there.

When I was transferred from San Diego to Great Lakes, IL back in 89 I drove the entire way. New Mexico had signs up at almost every entrance to the interstate with the fine for how much you were driving over the speed limit. IIRC it had 4 different fine ranges. I stayed within the $10 speeding fine range. Not sure they still have those signs but they were a big help back then.

Mississippi rest areas are filthy.
California rest areas are goddamn frightening.

If you don't see a LOT of cars and trucks in the parking bays when you pull in, keep on a-rollin' ... the restrooms are 'target-rich environments' for the Predator class. I have yet to see armed security in any of them. I wouldn't let my daughter go in them on road trips unless I went in with her to stand guard. Any questions, well ... talk to the hand.

I was just remarking to my son last night that I see that not as an estimate of travel time, but as the “time to beat.”
Go through Riverton, to the south. Teapot Rock, of Teapot Dome fame is not far from the route of travel, and you get the benefit of driving through the Tetons along the way, as well as right past Old Faithful, which is 100% worth a stop.

Agreed. A nice doable day of driving. But I think it depends on the scenery. Doing nine hours on I95 between Boston and DC SEEMS like three days!

Yes, Casper to Shoshone, Riverton, Debois, Togabee pass down into the Yellowstone River valley. Driving west with the Tetons looming right in front. Bear right at the intersection to Grand Teton Park through Grand Teton Park into Yellowstone.

Take Hwy 14 East thru Cody at Ranchester take I-90 to Rapid City and Mt. Rushmore, this way you avoid Bozangeles. Besides Bozangeles the google route appears to go thru the Crow and/or Northern Cheyenne reservations.
