88 Catcher's fault. Not just because of the throw, but the ump calls foul ball, she should have held onto the ball.

I'm gonna kinda disagree. I don't think you can reliably count on someone to hear and process the audible info when she's making the play more-or-less on muscle memory. As soon as the batter when into a bunt stance, the pitcher should have know that the ball was going to 2nd and been ready to hit the deck.

Also, that was simultaneously the best version of "Baby Got Back" and the best version of "Hallelujah" ever.

93 I've been on a Civil War cavalry kick lately. I saw Robert F. O'Neill on C-SPAN hawking his book Chasing Jeb Stuart and John Mosby about cavalry action in the eastern theater between mid 1862 and July 1863.

WARNNG! HISTORY NERD ALERT!

He has a theory Stuart's Christmas raid toward D.C., in late 1862 was used by Lee to create such paranoia in.D.C. that Stuart's feint toward D.C. just as Lee was marching north on his Gettysburg campaign caused the Union cavalry to delay scouting the Army of Northern Virgina and prematurely finding Lee's movement as had happened during the Antietam campaign. Thus this otherwise insignificant Christmas raid combined with the spoof cavalry raid to kidnap Lincoln and others out of D.C. might have had a pivotal role in a Confederate victory. Civil War disinformation.

Well, I thought it was interesting.

The Russians continue experimenting with a "Turtle Tank", a regular tank with an armored shed built over the top of it to keep drones from directly impacting on it. The first ones have been pretty crude, and homemade looking, but I expect the next generation to be better.

141 I watched an odd Germany movie called Paradise. Spoilers so...stop if you want to see it.

The basic setup is that a technocrat developed a way to take years from one person and give them to another and setup a company that acts as a broker in buying those years and then transferring them which gives her amazing wealth and power.

Shenanigans happen and a number of the characters learn doing this is wrong.

It seems they wanted this movie to be anti-capitalist or something but it comes across clearly anti-megapharma/anti-tech oligarch. The scenes where people are forced to "donate" years look exactly like the scenes were people were forced to get the clot shot.

IIRC, there's a skyscraper in Hong Kong that can kind of disappear if you're looking at it from the proper angle and distance.

Each side is covered in LED panels interspersed by cameras. The cameras allow it to cast the view behind it onto the side facing the viewer. Instead of the building, you see what's behind the building.

Clever people, those Chinese.

I remember a little old lady doing the same thing, except not being the DA of course. She got tazed, cuffed, and arrested.

I give this cop credit he stuck with it where most would not have soon as they figured out who she was. But already he was treating her in a privileged way...

191 Typical drone attack on a tank flies a shaped charge, about equal to an RPG, into a track or the engine compartment. This immobilizes the tank and the crew abandons it. If the tank is very lucky, it can be recovered and repaired later. Typical fate is for the abandoned tank to be pelted with grenades from more drones after the attack is over. Most spectacular is when a drone manages to drop a grenade into an open top hatch and set off the ammo inside.

248 Let's set the record straight here.

For many years, I nerdishly corrected those who said Kool-Ade was used at Jonestown that, no, it was Flav-r-Ade (sp?).

But more recently, I discovered that both brands were employed, mostly Flav-r-Ade but some Kool-Ade, too. (Probably Jones & the Elite got the top-shelf brand.)

I told this to JJ Sefton a while back, when he used the Kool-Ade pitcher character in a Morning Report graphic. He wisely noted that Flav-r-Ade had no iconic cartoon character to meme with. So, facts be damned, it's Kool-Ade for mass murder-suicide pictorial memes as in the hilarious 🫣 graphic above.

Now, I shall never speak of this again. (Burns nerd card.)

True. I also find it doesn't cross language/culture lines much, either. Monty Python and a few select others manage to do so, but it's rare. When was the last time somebody said that a movie was a really good German comedy? There's been more comedy out of Germany thanks to all the 'Downfall' parodies . . . .

I've watched a few Brit comedians on YouTube where I didn't find very much funny but the audience were hysterically laughing.

I don't like stupid dumb humor, but sophisticated dumb humor I enjoy. Bob Hope was one of those 'sophisticated dumb humor' guys with a machine gun delivery.

358 Also Roy Disney died owing me two (2) beers.

My grandfather died owing me $50. When I see him again, he'll pay up.

This was maybe 45 years ago. Grandad had a retirement business, a second hand store in Amarillo, Tx. He had all kinds of wonderful and mysterious stuff in the store. I'm so glad he sold it before he died, because if he hadn't, we'd have had to go through all that stuff. I'm also so mad that he sold it before he died, because we never got to go through all that wonderful stuff.

Anyhow, one time when I was maybe 12, he showed me a machine and told me he'd give me $50 if I could tell him what it was for. The machine had two metal hemispheres on a worm gear that could make them closer together or farther apart. There was a scale beneath the hemispheres, with an indicator. 9, 9 1/2, 9 /3/4..etc. An intake nozzle was below the hemispheres (I presume for steam).

I looked at it. And looked, and looked. I turned to grandad and said "It's a hat sizer". He looked startled, then said "Close, boy, it's a hat stretcher".

Pedantic son of a bitch. When I see him in glory, He WILL give me $50 or I'll know why. I NAILED that old man. Pay up.

402 Yesterday: Happy 91st birthday to the undisputed queen of comedy, Carol Burnett.

Posted by: Ciampino - She still looks good at April 27, 2024 03:08 AM (qfLjt)

403 There is decent German comedy, but stand-up is really difficult. It all comes down to the need in some lengthy sentences to end with a verb, and even to a person whose first language is German (or second, like me) it sounds like Yoda doing comedy: "My wife, her please take!" There are ways around this, and Monty Python proved it with Monty Python's Flegender Zirkus, shot in 1972 in Bavaria, with the first episode done entirely in German, and the second (and final) done in English and dubbed into German. It works hilariously well.

But German stand-up comedy? The only ones who make it big are the ones that go to an all-English act and build the whole thing about stereotypes regarding German daily life and behavior. They get huge in other European nations, but have to deal with an endless line of barbs about WWII. As, of course, they should have to.

412 And, not to be a wet blanke the French Cavalry charge that seized the Dutch fleet in 1795 is something that comes from only one source, Baton Jomini, the Swiss strategist whose work provided the textbook for strategy and tactics at West Point for those who attended between 1840 and 1860 (and who consequently got a lot of people killed in the American Civil War before commanders on both sides realized that eighteenth-century restraints no longer applied to modern conflict.

Neither French nor Dutch primary sources provide any evidence of such an event. The French commander on scene may have visited the Dutch flagship to request a cessation of active hostilities, or the Dutch may have imposed a cease-fire upon themselves..

It's a great story and I want it to be true, but there's not much in the way of reliable evidence. At least there are other remarkable events in war where the evidence is solid, such as the WWI battle in East Africa where bees entered as a major combatant, or the event at the end of WWII where regular Wehrmacht forces teamed up with US divisions to defeat a particularly nasty entrenched unit of SS troops.

This community is amazing from long time friends to new friends helping me to deal w/ a big loss. TY Ace for such a concoction.

LOL!!!

Sibling expects me to call back, if I'm awake. He knows better than to make the phone ring/wake my hubby at this hour...

Shhhhhhh. I'm not gonna call him.

All he does is argue, when he's drinking. Which--at this hour--is what he is most likely doing.

Nope. Nope. Nope. Not calling back.
