The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

“Many companies rushed in too fast with E.V.s that were too expensive and there was not as much of a market for them as they thought. That’s made it a lot tougher to sell those vehicles.” Sam Abuelsamid, transportation and mobility analyst at research firm Guidehouse Insights

Quote II

“It’s also not keeping with our universal health care. This should be a service that is provided and is covered by our health-care system. If people are feeling that they need to turn to private clinics for medical reasons, I see that as very problematic.” Dr. Heather Scott, head of the IWK’s division of obstetrics

Ah good old school daze......‘Utterly unprincipled’: Policy created on eve of protest used to make arrests

Since 1969, an IU Bloomington policy has allowed the use of temporary structures in Dunn Meadow without prior approval, forbidding them from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. IU changed the policy to ban the use of structures without prior approval April 24 — a day before the IU Divestment Coalition set up encampments in Dunn Meadow on Thursday.

The new policy, which can be viewed under the “Outdoor Spaces” dropdown menu on the Office of Student Life website, forbids the use of permanent or temporary structures without approval by the Office of the Vice Provost for Student Life and University Events. The policy change cited a section of the 1969 policy that suggested the creation of a committee by the Bloomington provost to give “continuing advice on changes of policy” and review denials of permission for “uncarried overnight signs, symbols or structures.” It suggests a small committee for prompt action if review is ever needed.

British troops may be tasked with delivering aid to Gaza from an offshore pier now under construction by the U.S. military, the BBC reported Saturday. U.K. government officials declined to comment on the report.

According to the BBC, the British government is considering deploying troops to drive the trucks that will carry aid from the pier along a floating causeway to the shore. No decision has been made and the proposal hasn’t yet reached Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, the BBC reported, citing unidentified government sources.

A former DEI manager and Instagram model is suing the University of Minnesota for firing her over a photo that showed her posing near an Israeli flag emblazoned with swastikas.

In the filing this week, Mashal Sherzad accused the school of violating her First Amendment rights as well as discrimination, the Star Tribune reported.

She also asked to have her job reinstated and wants more than $75,000 in damages.

For an occasional air traveler such as the Fabulous and I this is Tonight's Feel Good Story of The Day.

In a significant move for air travelers, the Department of Transportation unveiled groundbreaking regulations on Wednesday.

These new guidelines mandate airlines to automatically reimburse passengers in cash for flights that are canceled or face substantial delays.

26 So, we found out today that the Bidens are being bribed by Qatar.

According to allegations surfacing from a Kentucky bankruptcy court, Jim Biden, the brother of President Joe Biden, is said to have partnered with officials from the Qatari government and with a fund manager who is a relative of the Biden family, with the aim of raising funds for ventures in the U.S. healthcare sector.

The allegations suggest that the fundraising involved two companies, the Platinum Group USA and Obermeyer Engineering Consulting, which were partially owned by members of the Qatari government. Should these allegations be substantiated, they would constitute some of the most direct financial links between a relative of President Biden and a foreign government.

Not surprising.

35 Soviet Double Agent Anthony Blunt May Have Helped Hitler Too
Lindemans had betrayed Operation Market Garden, the ambitious and ill-fated Allied airborne mission that dropped thousands of paratroopers into the Nazi-occupied Netherlands, the 80th anniversary of which falls this September. Had it succeeded, it would have kicked open the door to the heart of Germany and brought the conflict to a speedy end. In the event the Allies lost more than 17,000 men in what was to be their final defeat of the war.

40 So, we found out today that the Bidens are being bribed by Qatar.

Biden's defenders are trying to claim that just because Biden's immediate relatives are being bribed doesn't mean that Joe is being bribed.

Oddly enough, Federal bribery law doesn't make that distinction - of course most government officials being bribed aren't going to be stupid enough to take the money themselves - they are going to use relatives and other people close to them to be the bagmen.

You don't need to show that the official himself was being bribed to convict him under the bribery statutes.

71 Imagine if 7% of all NFL players came from Reno, NV.

Reno, NV & Samoa* each have a population of appx 250,000.

7% of all NFL players were either born in Samoa or are of Samoan descent. That's pretty amazing! BYU gets an assist for this, because a lot of Samoans enter the NFL via BYU.

I researched this (an opportunity for a rare photo!) because the Chefs (not a typo) just drafted one Kingsley Suamataia, a sizable lad (350 lbs) out of... BYU.

And just when I'd FINALLY mastered the spelling & pronunciation of Tua Tagovailoa.

*aggregating the populations of the nation of Samoa and of American Samoa (a U.S. Territory) = about 250000, in total

I've always questioned the Helen Keller story, seems implausible. Patty Duke getting the Oscar for playing her was fraud, too.

I don't think it was Patty getting the Oscar. It was her cousin Cathy.

79 These new guidelines mandate airlines to automatically reimburse passengers in cash for flights that are canceled or face substantial delays.

That ought to create nightmares for the comptrollers of the airlines. At each airport, there needs to be a substantial pile of cash left in a vault and accessible by a responsible party for as long as there are potential departure flights. The security of this is one thing. The management and accounting for piles of loose cash in the hurried moments of a declaration of a canceled or whatever the heck definition of "substantial" is.

Not having guns at hand is going to be a problem for whoever is walking around with tens of thousands of dollars of loose bills in a room full of hundred of people, all with different reimbursements based on seating class, discounts, third party payers, corporate, mileage credits, layover segment value, aggregators and package prices.

This is totally bat scat insane regulations.

144 Thanks for the link on Anthony Blunt, Andycanuck! It is mind-boggling how much damage the Cambridge Five managed to accomplish, and so frustrating that they didn't have to answer for the consequences. The only comfort, I suppose, is that Burgess, MacLean, and Philby had to spend their last years in the USSR under less-than-stellar conditions. None, from what I understand, were given any particular elite treatment, and none, not even Philby, were ever truly trusted by the Kremlin or the KGB. That's the irony, and perhaps the unique punishment of the traitor - even those to whom they've made the betrayal can ever safely trust them, and they're pariahs to one degree or another as a consequence.

When asked about rising gas prices, Jean-Pierre responded, “The average gas price right now is cheaper than this time last year.” This statement did not reassure citizens, as gas prices change daily, and a 5.2% monthly increase is substantial.

The Cambridge Five in the end were the harbingers of a dedicated movement by some academics who were not actually upper-class to obliterate the British Empire.

The last remnants of Sidney Reilly's network of British/Soviet sources tried warning MI-5 and 6 of Blunt in the 40s and 50s.

It’s no different than a gas station. There are charging companies like Electrify America and ChargePoint. They rent space from property owners like gas stations, Walmart, hotels, etc. On that space they have charge stations.

Now fast forward to OBAMACARE and the country rapidly slid from one of the world's BEST healthcare systems to somewhere akin to the Best healthcare in places like...Oh Canada...or England...soon to be level with some South American Countries if FJB has his (DAMN DAMN) I keep forgetting this is OBAMA'S 3RD TERM!!!

No, that's not true nor really fair. The House impeached Mayorkas. But Chuck the Schmuck won't hold a Senate trial (even if a foregone conclusion with the Dems owning the Senate) ignoring the Senate's Constitutional duty to hold an impeachment trial after being presented with the House's articles of impeachment, and there were two articles.

Bride of Chucky Schumer is playing power politics over the Constitution. I hate my asshoe Senator. Well, both of them, actually, him and Kirsten Jellybrain.

You want to see a nightmare unfolding watch the stuff on Sean Puff Diddy Combs. Jules has been following it lately and it's crazy.

To go to the subject of your post, it seems like he might have been sexually abused by his father, whom I think died when he was young.

But like a lot of victims of sexual abuse he proceeded to become an abuser of young women and men. Many including Usher and Justin Bieber. Crazy stuff I'd rather not know but that is what J has been following lately.

It's a whole different culture and very bizarre.

395 Retirement is an interesting thing, isn't it? Our family doctor officially hung up his stethoscope two years ago, but then we find out a few months back that he's coming back into his old practice two days a month. Bit of a difficulty wrangling an appointment with him, as his popularity continues with his former patients, but got in and was delighted to see that he was happy to be back in the saddle again.

I was quite happy too - his successor is almost everything bad about medical schools today. The sort that tells a patient that an effective medication that they've been taking for a while is something he's not comfortable with prescribing - merely because of some phantom fear of liability, not from any legitimate medical concern. That, and nothing close to a bedside manner - the guy is practically terrified of seeing a patient and elects to let his nursing staff do most of the real work.

396 "Retirement" LOL

397 Yes, there are plenty "worse off" than us.

There. Makes it allllll better, doesn't it? (no, it doesn't)

But I carry on. Crunch the #s and try to figure how to keep this place afloat while doing all the labor. Plus Dad's estate, with NO help from siblings.

Jeez, I feel like the Little Red Hen. Except I will be forced to share that loaf of bread.

399 Heh. Thanks RickZ.

I will fulfill my duties as estate rep. No more and no less. Siblings are in for some disappointment, as things they could've helped with will actually cost $$$$$ (and cut into their faaiiiir shaaare) Oh well.

400 Behind the pig story were other headlines from the same source- a small TV station in Vermont.
" 4 teenagers die in high-speed chase after trooper uses PIT maneuver"
We're more than halfway through the story to find that the chase exceeded 110 mph, with no editorial comment about danger to other cars and pedestrians in their path.
Another few sentences to point out that SUV was stolen.
The last sentence mentions that 3 had active warrants and 2 were wearing ankle monitors.
Woke journalism has completely infected the nation.

I would consider Mister Ghost to be a trustworthy source about hauntings.

408 The real tragedy of Helen Kelller was her death - accidentally bumped over the rail of the Brooklyn Bridge. Poor creature screamed her fingers off all the way down.

If a woman loses her shit over a silly joke then she's not worth getting a bj from. And probably sucks at making sandwiches.

413 Yes, I condemn myself - but I was appalled to find out that there is a growing "Helen Keller Was a Fake" movement out there. It started, as so many stupid things do, on TikTok. Some people were clearly pushing it for laughs and to see how many gullible people would take the bait - not unlike the Flat Earth craze of a few years ago.

There is an interesting story about Stevie Wonder, though. Shaquille O'Neal swore that he got into an elevator, unannounced, with Stevie Wonder. The two had never met, and Shaquille hadn't said anything when Stevie said, "Hello, Shaq." Shaq said he wasn't going to speculate on what that might have meant, but he did so it was something that he found unusual and hard-to-explain..

Flip side of this, the original Ole Miss mascot, Colonel Rebel, was based on a die-hard black fan of the Rebels who never missed a game. James "Blind Jim" Ivy dressed in the style associated with Colonel Reb, and had the same moustache, and it's believed that the mythic Colonel was inspired by and created as a "white-washed" version of James Ivy. A devoted fan of Ole Miss football, who was blind, not only enjoyed the games whole-heartedly and became its literal image.

The Stevie Wonder thing is easy. He's likely not 100% blind. So when you live in the same building as Shaq and this giant shadow gets into the elevator with you probably bigger than any other shadow of a person you've seen, it's probably Shaq.

421 Helen Keller was NOT a fraud. She was a vegetable trained to pantomime. Anne Sullivan was a fraud. In the defense of the bumper sticker person, no one remembers the name "Anne Sullivan" so if the message is to go out, you have to lead with the name people know.

422 We think the airlines are defrauding us when they don't pay us cash for a canceled flight. Requiring the airlines to pay cash for a canceled flight will lead to grifters finding a ways to (1) get the cash for the flight their company paid for after the flight is canceled, and (2) gives grifters an incentive to screw around and get a flight canceled for the money. The government should let the free market decide and stop murking around with this.
