Wednesday Morning Rant

In Name Only?

"Republican In Name Only" has been a pejorative for about as long as I've been politically aware. I remember it being bandied about often during the Bush 43 Administration, and less often but still commonly during the Clinton Administrations, when it was apparently first attested in print. It's been in use for an entire generation now, and been in frequent use for more than 20 years.

It remains evergreen despite the arrival of new and even more hostile appellations like "C*ckservative" (I'm not sure if that one will cause advertising grief in the main post, so apologies for the asterisk) that are also quite popular. Something about "RINO" just works and so it remains popular. It has an "X-factor" as far as political insults go and I doubt it will ever leave common parlance. That's too bad, really, because it should - or at very least, it should stop being an insult and become a compliment.

RINO is perhaps the least accurate political insult ever used. The fact that it has been in existence for so long and is still so useful is a testament to that. We don't still have "Nixonian Republicans" because it quit being relevant. We don't still have "Me Too Republicans" or most of the others. But we do still have the misnamed "RINOs" and the term isn't going anywhere because the disconnect between what the Republicans actually are and what their voters perceive them to be has never been solved.

Consider those who are famously "RINOs." They are men like John McCain and Mitch McConnell and Mitt Romney and Adam Kinzinger. The list goes on. And on. And on. It's probably easier to name Republicans who are not "RINOs," and that should underscore the problem with the term. If virtually all of the prominent and powerful Republicans are "RINOs" and have been for decades (though with even greater concentrations today), the term is internally contradictory.

These men are not RINOs, they are "Republicans In Good Standing." These are not phony Republicans who work against the interests of the party. They work against the interests of their constituents, and of the people more broadly, but not of the party. They are not merely titular Republicans. These men and all of their fellow travelers are the Platonic Ideal of Republicans. They are the GOP. This is what the GOP has been for ages. This is what it wants to be. This is the party that puts forward red-meat legislation like ending Obamacare or improving border control when it can't possibly pass, and then refuses to even consider such unseemly things when they are actually in a position to make them happen. We also call this "failure theater," and it's part of the same concept. It's the GOP's modus operandi.

Those who do not behave this way - the odd man who seems to at least occasionally try to do something else - are the real RINOs. They are the ones who do not behave like Republicans. If someone is "in name only," it's the person who is hated by the rest, and the person whom the rest resent for bucking their trend and their norms. Those who normally get called "RINOs" don't deserve to be because they're the real, true, effective, "team player" Republicans who serve in the manner demanded by the party.

If you're looking for a RINO, don't look for a Nikki Haley or Paul Ryan, look for a Rand Paul or Matt Gaetz - or, if you are a Republican, you can probably just look in the mirror. These are the real RINOs.

That's absurd. A Platonic Ideal of anything was NOT what most examples actually were. That's why it's an "ideal". You don't find it by a census. It is instead a paradigm, a perfect instantiation.

37 this is a fair point, but i do feel like RINO should still apply to the grifter class that's running the party. I think that GOPe for GOP Establishment, is a better descriptor of the cocksuckers running the party right now.

One could make the argument that the republican party is at it's core, the ideals that are espoused, not the people that occupy the positions. therefore, the miserable twat waffles who are the "nominal" heads of the party are in fact RINOs because they violate the core tenants of the party, thus making them the GOPe, since they're currently in charge.

Tons of variables. You have to do your homework and really look at the offering closely.

For my folks, Advantage was a good move. Theirs is from a real insurance company and doesn't have tons of "extras" like the ones on TV ("free" shoes or groceries or whatever). That real insurance company, however, has an excellent network where they live and there are *more* doctors available to them than there are with regular Medicare. A lot of docs that don't accept Medicare patients will accept a UHC or Blue Cross patient or whatever, depending on where you live.

The plans with lots of "freebies" are usually bad value. The plans from real mainline insurers could be quite good, depending on what they cover and the strength of their network (and participation) in your locality.

I'm less pessimistic about it, actually.

The base is not a minority within the party, the base just isn't in the party. Not really, not anymore. The party doesn't serve its base and doesn't do what it claims. People have started to figure that out, but old habits die hard.

But that also creates opportunity. Maybe the GOP will change and become the party it claims to be, but I doubt it. The GOP may also die and be replaced by a party that is more or less what the GOP claimed to be. That would be fine.

But it's too obvious now what the GOP is, and it isn't what it claims to be or what people (decreasingly) believe it to be.

But they lie and lie and lie, promise after promise after promise of all the conservative items they will work for.

68 The purpose of a system is what it does (POSIWID) is a systems thinking heuristic coined by Stafford Beer, who observed that there is "no point in claiming that the purpose of a system is to do what it constantly fails to do."

The term is widely used by systems theorists, and is generally invoked to counter the notion that the purpose of a system can be read from the intentions of those who design, operate, or promote it.

When a system's side effects or unintended consequences reveal that its behavior is poorly understood, then the POSIWID perspective can balance political understandings of system behavior with a more straightforwardly descriptive view.

71 59 49 I wonder if Johnson was blackmailed. Maybe he's too embarrassed that he searched for busty lesbian negresses on what he thought was the browser's 'private' window. He should just own up to it. Think of all save the Ukranian lives this $61b will cost. Or the American lives that would be saved if the border was secure.

I for one want to thank Speaker Johnson for waiting a couple months before he caved on the Ukraine handouts... If he had caved right away Zelensky would have already breezed through the billions and would now be back demanding more multi-billions .. So see... A victory.. Hurrah !

Funny, and true. By waiting, he did also knock $23B from the original bill - the Senate originally proposed $118B in their Feb 2024 bill.

72 The base is not a minority within the party, the base just isn't in the party.

They've currently got the best racket in America going and will fight anyone who threatens it. That includes their voters, who are given a binary choice based on one or two "issues" which aren't ever solved.
It's brilliant. 160 years since the last political party came along and upended any applecarts.
So democrats promise to tax the rich and ban guns, and up until recently the republicans ran on abortion and lower taxes.
None of those issues are meant to be solved, they're meant to help the rubes choose sides.

76 For my folks, Advantage was a good move. Theirs is from a real insurance company and doesn't have tons of "extras" like the ones on TV ("free" shoes or groceries or whatever). That real insurance company, however, has an excellent network where they live and there are *more* doctors available to them than there are with regular Medicare. . . .

I'd think the major insurance companies like Humana and the like would be okay. They offer a low or $0 premium, but not many more freebies. And at present, my only Rx is the commonly available and cheap BP med; so I can check for that.

The Medicare Supplement plans don't offer dental or vision, or Rx coverage -- right?

Before I sign up with anybody, I'll check other zip codes I'm considering moving to, and see what their coverage is there.

The real battle was never at the top. It gets all the headlines, but you're never going to change the party by getting one guy to replace another guy.

The real battle is happening at the ground up. The donor class cares a whole lot less about what elected GOP does at most city council levels. It cares only slightly more about what GOP state reps are doing. Hell, GOP governors can be raging conservative on certain levels. It's just once they get to the federal stage that the corruption really takes over across the board. The corruption at the lower levels are simply of a different character. Real estate instead of military, that sort of thing.

So, that being said, it's places like FL (obviously) and TN (rumors of turning down fed education dollars) where the change to the party as a whole come from. This was always a fight that was going to take at least a generation. The Tea Party was just over half a generation ago.

Yeah, I get that we are a majority overall, but it's the leadership - and more importantly the corporation that owns the Republican Party - that would have to change, and that's where I start to just give up and sink to the bottom.... We can't even start fighting for our country without winning a major battle against our real enemy, the GOP, first.

Again, this rain must just be getting me down....

Despite the depth of corruption, we should still fight to root out corruption and get the party back. The RINOs (Mitch, Mitt, etc.) are the corrupt outsiders ... they wear the GOP as their stolen skin suit, but we want to strip them of their false status.

Rarely - and the big stuff that could be scary is rarely covered - like implants. Dental insurance is a bit of a racket. We all paid for it through our work. 173 68 The purpose of a system is what it does (POSIWID) is a systems thinking heuristic coined by Stafford Beer, who observed that there is "no point in claiming that the purpose of a system is to do what it constantly fails to do."

There's a fundamental flaw with that approach. It entails that no system can be said to fail, because it is, by definition, doing what it does, and this is its purpose.

So, e.g., our school system is excellent.

Really, concepts such as success and failure, rottenness or excellence, are meaningless by that standard. Everything does what it does, and so everything "succeeds".

I was elected chair of my town's Republican Party last month. CT is a very tough state to be a conservative (RINO) in, as the party feels in their bones that the only way to win is to be moderate, and avoid the hot-button issues that we all know the Dems will target in November - abortion, and Trump. Now that I'm trying to walk the talk in the real world, I certainly understand the pull of that argument. If we had a record of winning with that strategy, I'd understand it more. However, we're not winning. Fortunately, there are a small (and growing) group of CT GOPers that want to change tactics as well.

193 I was elected chair of my town's Republican Party last month.

203 Another thing to consider with the traditional Medicare vs. MA decision is that in nearly all states the only time you can get a a Medicare supplement plan (which covers the costs that traditional Medicare doesn't) without medical underwriting is during your initial Medicare enrollment period. After that period, it is difficult or impossible to get a supplement plan at a reasonable premium unless you remain in near perfect health. Now, many people are on traditional Medicare without any supplement, but I didn't.want to take that risk as the uncovered costs can be high. In essence it's easy to go from traditional to MA, but not easy to do the reverse. So I decided to go with traditional plus a supplement.

I recommend the book "Medicare for Dummies."

It's funny. I was at a GOP orientation for new RTC Chairs this past weekend, and someone actually said something to that effect. It didn't go well in the room.

When asked what issues we should run on, the answers are Taxes and Schools. All well and fine, but the schools failed us bigly during COVID, and there is absolutely no appetite to hold them to account. In fact, we're racing the Dems to see who can fund all the special remediation programs to get our kids back up to pre-C19 standards first. No talk about funding government at pre-C19 levels either. It's like its a political Third Rail. Everyone wants to MoveOn.org, and not even talk about the last four years.

A challenging environment, to say the least.

They were my biggest monthly bill. Out of work and paying them I was selling off assets. Reflecting on it, as it effected me, I choose Medicare A&B. The cost is minimal.

Meh. Just mileage would be fine. If you drive an EV, you pay a mileage tax when you register or renew your car. Check the odometer, do the subtraction, pay the tax.

But that makes too much sense, doesn't expand the panopticon, and doesn't offer lots of graft to a powerful person's cousin. So when they impose mileage taxes - and I suspect they will - it will apply to everyone (not just EVs, so IC drivers will get double-taxed) and they will enforce it with GPS trackers but that's okay because they promise not to use location data for anything other than calculating the taxes. Swearsies.

267 There are also high deductible supplement G plans that kick in when your annual out of pocket expenses hit a certain amount (which goes up every year and is currently around $2000). After the deductible it pays for everything . The premium for the HD G plan is much lower --mine is around $40/month-- and if you aren't sick a lot you will likely save money going this way as most years your out of pocket expenses won't be that much.

Don't forget if you choose traditional Medicare you also need to get a Part D plan to cover your prescription drugs. There all all different kinds of these plans depending on how many / how expensive your Rx are. And you can change Part D plans every year.

Pooky got put on Medicare because he's on SSDI (his premiums are being taken out of his monthly check). But he kept the Medicaid, as well as VA benefits. So whatever the VA doesn't pay for, and then Medicare doesn't pay for, usually Medicaid will pick up. But getting to that last point is a huge hassle and involves a LOT of dead trees.

324 Medicare Advantage is basically drug coverage. You have Medicare A & B for doctors and hospital. And I don't know why someone would think optical and dental care is something easy to cover.

----------------------

Um no. Medicare Advantage is "Medicare-like" coverage that is administered by private companies rather than by the government. If you have MA you DO NOT have Medicare Part A or B... although you continue to pay the Part B premium. You have similar services as traditional Medicare, plus drug coverage. But the way they operate is totally different.

332 283 There's a fundamental flaw with that approach. It entails that no system can be said to fail, because it is, by definition, doing what it does, and this is its purpose.

So, e.g., our school system is excellent.

You're kind of missing the semi-sarcastic point of TPOSIWID: the school system was designed to fail kids. So yes, by that metric, it's excellent, but that's like being #1 in a small dick contest.

344 320 Prosecutors in New York have revealed what the other crime is that Donald Trump was allegedly trying to conceal when he was falsifying business records and they claim it was to unlawfully promote his candidacy. The fatal error is that the NY Statute they cite only applies to elections within the State of New York and not Federal Elections!

The entire case is a monstrosity.

Even down to the bullshit falsifying financial records.

The documents they are talking about are internal documents and not public facing documents for financial reporting or auditing purposes.

Essentially they are diary entries but these animals took diary entries and conjured a Kangaroo Court.

Hey, Bidens Quim Daughter talked about showering with her father while she was underage in her Diary, I'm sure that could be made into a federal case, I mean they somehow made a federal case about the possesion of the diary, maybe we should make like Bunny and BURN THE WHOLE F**KING VILLIAGE DOWN!!!!!!!

Posted by: Notsothoreau at April 24, 2024 12:25 PM (yeEu9)

This isn’t entirely accurate. Medicare advantage is a replacement for traditional Medicare. It is NOT traditional Medicare with drug coverage tacked on. It also replaces a Medicare supplement plan in the sense it will have a stop-loss provision for the 20% of traditional plan B coverage never pays.

But there is a trade-off.

It it also is a private company managing your care, where you can go and who you can see is typically limited - a lot.Refusals to pay or delays in authorizing treatments have been a huge problem, enough that these plans have been derided as scams. Cost shares and high deductibles still exist though there is a stop loss.

I would recommend that anyone who can afford it stay on employer paid insurance as long as possible under the rules, then get traditional A &B with a separate D plan and Medicare supplement. The latter come with de minimis is or high deductible versions, but are needed for stop loss and out of network protections.

359 This post describes the GOP, not Republicanism. A Republic sends its representatives to the legislatures as representatives of the citizenry interests. What the GOP does is NOT representative of the citizenry interests; they are not Republicans. It's that simple.

Why do we keep sending them? Our binary system mostly limits us to two horrible choices, one of which is slightly less horrible than that other. That makes them our representatives, but they don't represent us when they get into office. They are not Republicans. It's that simple.

The article is correct, though, that RINO should be retired. Those who deserve the contempt originally embodied within the acronym now wear the title with pride. The usefulness of the term has expired.

I don't know what to replace it with - something to give the flavor of GOP but not Republican.
