The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

‘It really is appalling behaviour. I am at a loss. Both of you talk about it as if it was a beloved family pet. What an example you are showing to your children about what love is.’ Judge Roy Bean Judge Christine Laing KC

Quote II

“That’s what you get for $68,000 a year at Columbia — an administration who cowers in the face of thugs and bullies, and a university president who would rather make your kids try to learn off campus, than take a truly hard line with those students calling for the murder of Jews,” Mike Rowe

On the bright side The Fabulous married me to shorten her surname.

A while ago, following this display of progressive parenting, I wrote,

And yes, the family does live in Brooklyn. And no, they don’t share a surname. And yes, the adults have availed themselves of professional counselling services.
A quip that resulted in some rumblings on the topic of marriage and shared surnames, or the lack thereof. In the comments, Steve E noted,

[Not sharing a surname] creates complications for the most mundane of things, too. Pick up a pizza, whose name is it in? Loyalty account at retail store, whose name is it in? My wife kept her own surname because – feminism, the patriarchy, etc. – she now says if she’d known what a pain-in-the-ass it would be, she wouldn’t have done it. When she signs up for things now, she gives my surname.
And Ray added,

If father tries to board an airplane with a nine-year-old girl who doesn’t share his surname, the airline will hit the big red panic button.
As I said at the time, I don’t have strong feelings on the subject, but it occurs to me that not taking your husband’s surname, ostensibly as some Assertion Of Progress And Enlightenment – while retaining what is presumably your father’s surname – does create complications.

For instance, having different surnames can confuse people as to whether you’re married or not, and if so, to whom. And any children with hyphenated surnames – a fashionable statement of the aforementioned Progress And Enlightenment – will then face the issue of what to do when they get married, especially if it’s to someone whose own name is also modishly hyphenated. Do they ditch some of the accumulated names – and if so, which ones? Or do they go for multiply hyphenated surnames, which would very quickly become a bit much?

Say, if Derek Williams and Sarah Anderson get married but retain their own surnames, and their children’s surnames are hyphenated as Anderson-Williams, they may enjoy a sheen of modernity, and perhaps connotations of aristocracy and status. But what happens when little Annie Anderson-Williams grows up and wants to marry James Houghton-Clompington? Do we get a brood of Anderson-Williams-Houghton-Clompingtons?

I’m exaggerating for comic effect, of course. But only slightly.

As a new, supposedly more equitable tradition – at least outside of the Spanish-speaking world – it seems scarcely less prone to complication and trade-offs. When hyphenated offspring come to name their own children – and if they follow the same rules as their hyphenated parents – the whole thing rapidly becomes unworkable, and, at risk of causing offence, names will have to be cut. Lest each child sound like a law firm.

Though I suppose one could take it as a kind of unintended symbolism, a measure of modern progressivism. In that, the problem it allegedly addresses doesn’t seem to be much of a problem for most of those it supposedly oppresses, and the solution offered is somewhat short-sighted and soon results in something close to absurdity.

In the original thread, pst314 added,

I have heard of some writers, and others in careers where name recognition matters, keeping their names when they marry. But that’s a special case.
Also, among gay couples. Though gay couples tend not to result in children, thereby sidestepping the issue of escalating hyphenation and a society-wide overhaul of stationery, due to the need to enlarge the ‘print name’ and ‘signature’ boxes on every official form.

Somethings are just too perverted to become a Genius Award Winner. Man performed sex act on a corpse after breaking into hospital mortuary

*****

I know for a fact that Buck Throckmorton is not our Genius Award Winner

A battery someone tossed in the trash caused an emergency in an Olathe neighborhood last week.

City leaders said someone tossed a lithium battery into the trash. A trash truck unknowingly started hauling it to the landfill. On the way the lithium battery caught fire and started burning the rest of the trash in the truck.

The driver quickly stopped the truck and dumped the burning load on the pavement to prevent extensive damage to the equipment according to the city. Firefighters then extinguished the fire.

My ring fell off my finger and went down the drain. I turned the water off immediately. I will get a plumber out tomorrow and rip the entire sink and wall apart if I need, is there any chance my ring will still be there? This is a 1c fancy light blue diamond. 31 Dad managed to arrange for getting drinks in the nursing home. He had me buy the cheap liqueurs and he would get the one shot he was allowed.
During covid I had to wear a mask at the liquor store so I bought a mixed case of the 8-12 dollar bottles. I have half of it left and I don't drink myself.
He liked to drink, and explained to me that you could drink for the experience, for the adventure or to get drunk. He mostly wanted to take the edge off I think. He used to drink scotch, and he told me when he was a young man the favored liquor was the one with "finger grooves in the side so you could keep hold of it as you slid off the barstool to the floor." He wound up drinking stuff like well-quality amaretto and midori in the home.
He warned me my whole life drinking was a problem for the family and he hoped I didn't have that issue.

I only read the quoted portion but I suppose if we're going to get retarded about the subject we can always adopt the Mexican way. So a woman gets married her married name can be, say, Jones de Smith. And if they had a daughter it would be Smith Jones, at least until *she* got married in which case it would be Smith de *inserthusbandosnamehere*.

Cuz it's always made more sense to trace your lineage patrilinealy.

90 Those of you who understand plumbing- I think I may be on the verge on being murdered, and rightly so. I normally take my rings off to was my face, but tonight, I didn’t and don’t even know why. My ring fell off my finger and went down the drain. I turned the water off immediately. I will get a plumber out tomorrow and rip the entire sink and wall apart if I need, is there any chance my ring will still be there? This is a 1c fancy light blue diamond. I can’t just go get another one…I am sobbing right now.
Posted by: Piper at April 24, 2024 09:59 PM (ZdaMQ)

Hie yourself to Amazon and buy a pickup claw tool. They are cheap, and should fit down any opening large enough to pass a finger ring. Odds are good it is in the P-trap. In fact, many sink and basin P-traps are retained by hand-tightened locking rings, and can be removed without resorting to tools. Try that first, and get the claw if you cannot open the P-trap.

The English would refer to his girlfriend as a "bird". A gentleman would ask the boyfriend a question "May I have a word with your bird?"
So, if your "bird" is a swan, who loves to show off, hence, swanning.

Didn't cause any serious problems. If it seemed necessary, we'd introduce the other as "This is my wife/husband, [name]."

113 The way they do names in Spain seemed difficult enough that if wives took their husband's surname they'd have a whole long sentence going. Everyone gets some combination of both parent's surname. I can't explain the details but at least they understand it.
Posted by: banana Dream at April 24, 2024 10:08 PM (Y6IkP)

In Spanish the usual way is the father's name first, then the mothers. This gets messy if the fathers surname is multijointed (Jesus Huerta de Soto Ballester for example) but it is one of those things that is understood through convention. The posers that insist on multiple names beyond that are understood to be posers. The added benefit is that Spanish naming conventions usually mean there is no middle name because it is unneeded, unless of course one's family is in the peerage or nobility, and is required to show off one's august family history, or of course one is aping the nobility.

In Germany multiple middle names are common, and each additional name beyond (I think) two are charged extra on governmental forms.

Usually the wife takes the husband's surname, as "de surname" though that is flexible and I think it is changing

Cristina Fernández married Néstor Kirchner, and now goes by Cristina Fernándes de Kirchner, though is often called Cristina Kirchner because of her ties to the Kirchner family, though some women will just take the husband's last name

That album has one of those fun covers. The album cover has a window which shows the album sleeve, a picture of a, I guess, hacienda with Jackson Browne in a chair. When you pull the sleeve with the record out, the same picture is underneath the sleeve and visible through the window. The only difference is there is no Jackson Browne in the picture under the sleeve because . . . you're holding Jackson Browne (the album) in your hands.

Kids today have no idea how fun album covers were, and not just the double albums for cleaning seeds.

“That’s what you get for $68,000 a year at Columbia — an administration who cowers in the face of thugs and bullies, and a university president who would rather make your kids try to learn off campus, than take a truly hard line with those students calling for the murder of Jews,” Mike Rowe
---------

The Columbia President and almost all other college presidents, along with professors and staff, are terrified of angering their woke student bodies and wealthy Woke alumni. They know angering those groups and/or the Woke Faculty Senate will get them run out of campus on a rail faster than you can say 'Joe is a liar'. If fired by the Woke they also know their future job opportunities at the same levels will be few if any. Better to side with the evil ones if they value their jobs. And they desperately value their top-of-the-hill jobs in the academic world.

240 In re surnames - on both mom and dad's side of the family, when the families got here close to three hundred years ago, they only spoke German and hence when official records had to be filled out, the clerks anglicized their last name. Said clerks elected to spell the names the way they heard them.

With dad's family, that actually worked - ended up with an English-sounding name that's easy to pronounce (although people still will look at the name, and give it odd pronunciations that are puzzling). With mom's family, not so lucky - the best that could be done is, well, bizarre. (In fact, the family doesn't even agree on how to spell it.)

When my wife-to-be and I went to fill out the forms for our marriage license, the clerk took a look at my entry under "Mother's Maiden Name," got really wide eyes, and said with deep seriousness, "Whatever you do, don't name any of your children after your Mama."

Yeah, it's that bad. (And it would not be an improvement to have stuck with the Swabian-Deutsch original, either.) And no, none of our kids got saddled with that moniker.

248 Speaking of home repairs - Does every home have at least two electrical switches that one can't determine what they control?

I have a couple that are real head-scratchers. One item discovered while looking for other things though is there is a unused 20A line running from the breaker box to my crawlspace.

The end within the breaker box is labeled 'Spare/crawlspace' and not connected to a breaker. In the crawl space, there is about 50 ft of coiled conductor, not terminated to a device with a paper tag that says 'Spare/crawlspace'.

What kind of man labels things for another, unknown homeowner's future benefit?

Posted by: nurse ratched

She came home tonight. In quite a bit of pain. The hard part is the next 7 to 10 days. She's supposed to stay in bed with as little activity as possible. When the pain subsides I'm not sure how well that will work. I've got a feeling she may get more nurse than mom from my daughter. She was really thrilled and glad about all the people praying for her.

Good weather, hayman did two more crops that year,
Next summer I'm up for more hay, Pop dangles this watch and
asks if I know about it. It's my Seiko.

During the winter one of hayman's clients, a farmer, cracks open a bale and finds this watch which he took back to hayman who asked around.

That watch laid out in the field all summer, tractors, planting, shredding, people loading, other cuttings, rain, heat and there it was, running, ticking, on time. Still have it in a box.

a night on the town in heels can come with exercise included...his not only includes your calf muscles, but your hamstrings and glutes might also work harder when you slip on heeled shoes.

So which is it? Is it more efficient or better exercise? I don't see this as an AND proposition...

328 About the names? Just do the Mexican thing. They all have two surnames, the father's first (comes first) and the mother's first (comes second) for the kids.

So you have
José Jesús González Velázquez (Father's first surname González and mother's first surname Velázquez) marry
María Josefa Martínez López ((Father's first surname Martínez and mother's first surname López):

Their first kid could be Rafaela González Martínez, or with her middle name, Rafaela María de Jesús González Martínez.

"I double dash dare ya!"

Posted by: Miklos has been thinking again (sorry, it happens) at April 25, 2024 12:28 AM (oGyF9)

Same with the dashes as with Mexican naming conventions. Last dash from each parent gets dropped and becomes new two-name dash.

332 Now, the married names are fun; that's when you add a "de" between her surnames and her husbands, but often her last surname is dropped too. So in the above example:

José Jesús González Velázquez (Father's first surname González and mother's first surname Velázquez) marry
María Josefa Martínez López ((Father's first surname Martínez and mother's first surname López):

Her married name is María Josefa Martínez de González

364 Medical update. Feel free to skip.

Gradually recovering from Apr 2 surgery. Before the main cutting began, a urologist put stents on my kidneys to protect them. I woke up to (among other things) a catheter. New experience for me. Three weeks later, I go in to the urologist's office to have the stents removed. Of course it's two young gals doing the job; I'm too old to care. First they have to take out the catheter. The main doc says, why'd they leave it in so long? Grrr. I'm just the patient, nobody tells me anything. A relief to have that removed, anyway. Then they pull out the stents. Cringeworthy, boys, but surprisingly not really painful. I'm not sure how that all worked, but one less thing dragging me down. Miracles of modern medicine. 🙄

Just had to share. Next time I'll tell y'all about the progress on my two wound-vac sites and the joys of the iliostomy.

Sympathy and prayers for all the wounded and ailing Morons & adjacents.

Sleep well. I plan to.

Most of my ancestors on that side were dirt poor, so couldn't afford the "Calderon y Bravo" kind of add-ons to their names. I think it was mainly for the rich and those with "noble" blood. I have a few way, way back that DID do that. Even more, I saw some cases where in the records, the girls had the last name of their mom, the boys of their dad.

I use Edge and have zero problems here at AOS. In fact, I find it to be a very solid browser provided you turn off all the bloat they've added into it over the last few years. It's a bit of work to get it configured but once you do it just works. The cross device syncing is bulletproof anymore (in the early days that was not the case). I have spent a lot of time with Brave and found it to be a great alternative. The reason I don't use it is the PDF formatting when printing to file is not as good as Edge nor as convenient and Edge's Cross browser platform data swapping is just too handy to to give up.

Piper, there is a J or U shaped trap under your sink. Likely white pipes that look like the letter J or U. It's called the trap - gaseous reasons for that name. Your ring is very likely therein. Put a bucket under the pipes and use channel locks or hands to unscrew the connections and take the pipes apart. Your ring will be in the U portion of the pipes.

424 Also I learned there is a 'Fall Guy' movie coming out that looks terrible. So for a trip down memory lane I YT'd some original Fall Guy clips; and I recalled Heather Thomas as being hot but did not recall just HOW hot, my God!!!
And learned why she kind of faded away: the combination of hot and nice, girl-next-door persona earned her the dubious title of 'Most Stalked Woman In Hollywood'. She had dozens of restraining orders, and those were just the weirdos she knew about. She got married to a guy with two daughters, and she was terrified for them.
She eased off the screen because it had flatly become so unsafe it was no longer tenable. With that level of insanity, stalking on that scale, it's not workable: it's the old adage, "You have to win every time; they only have to win once."
She ended her career out of totally valid concerns for her life and the lives of her family.

Only fair, but if the dwarf from the Safety Dance video doesn't work out, we could toss him in as an extra bit of compensation. Remember, we want you to emerge on cue, long plesiosaur-like neck raised, then slowly tilt your head down, all pensive with the glorious and sad history of the Highland clans. We'll need you again for the bridge and the reprise, and if you're agile enough with those fins, we'll see if wardrobe can't find enough tartan to turn you out in good Inverness plaid for the final dance number. You could keep the sporran and the tam. Just have your people appear suddenly and unexpectedly from the depths and call my people, and we'll work out the details. Stardom beckons - today a drab heather-drenched brae, tomorrow, the Orkneys, then the big time .... GLASGOW!

A few actresses have done the married a really rich guy and dropped the Hollywood madness. Daniela Biachi (A Bond girl, From Russia with Love) kind of did that. She did a few movies, mostly in Italy, then married a billionaire and quit acting. It worked out for her nicely.

Lets see.... do the casting couch bullshit with folks that you DON'T like...

or marry a rich guy who you don't mind sleeping with....

seems pretty simple to me.

471 You'd think I'd know the answer to the 'Sailor' query but I read Dharma Bums when I was about 19? And thought all the characters were degenerate losers.
Much later read Orpheus Emerged and my opinion did not change.
Not much interest in The Beats.

Living in an environment that is constantly trying to kill you?

Let's just say... we have a different view on the term.. Sailor.

475 No takers on Peter Fox yet? He's got a milder number called Haus am See" (a house on the lake) that showcases his other range of talents.

I will say that at least German rap doesn't suffer from the pitfall that French Rap is stuck in - it's not irritating.

477 Romeo13,

She didn't want to be an actress. She wanted to be a ballerina but grew into a voluptuous Italian gal and that ended. Didn't speak English very well so Hollywood dreams were out. Plus, again, she wasn't that interested in acting. Her IMdB page is a short read but interesting. Came from wealth. Drove the director of 'From Russia with Love' mad because she ignored his verbal abuse and laughed at him. Sat around, ate chocolate, read books on the set. Most everybody else on set loved her. She was VERY Italian.

479 I did read everything of Hunter S. Thompson I could lay my hands on, and still list The Great Shark Hunt as 'formative', I guess. Fear and Loathing On The Campaign Trail '72 is a masterpiece of American impressionistic reporting; but I kind of lost interest in HST after that book, as I thought that about halfway through the book he lost his mind.

482 Speaking of Italians, if you have an historical bent and don't mind subtitles, Amazon Prime has a TV detective show, 'Detective De Luca', that's pretty good. Great cars, set before and after WWII with lots of political intrigue obscure to most.
And it's Italian so there is lots of 'scenery', if you know what I mean...

510 Draws in huge gush of breath - over 500! You magnificent minds made it happen - life can continue.

And Romeo13, your point is well-taken. Remember that in my oxygen-starved dying ramble above, I abandoned the idea of destroying disco and the Love Boat, because people had to learn. The lesson was what Disco became and why it must never be allowed to go that far again. As for the Love Boat, it indirectly informed a naive public about STDs and the danger of letting the guy from the Mary Tyler Moore Show wear a captain's hat and host a romantic anthology show.

513 I am ...rejuvenated. You all saved the thread and, indirectly, me. New adventures now beckon ahead. I look at the globe, spin it, and stop it with a touch. Hmmmm - a waterway shared by Russia, Iran, and so many other countries. A riddle? Yes...what *did* the Caspian see?

I'm off, bindlestaff over my shoulder, marching along. (soft whistling of It's a Long Way To Tipperary). Remember (voice growing fainter as Drake proceeds further away) , the whole world is a circus if you look at it the right way. Every time you pick up a handful of dust, and see not the dust, but a mystery, a marvel, there in your hand, every time you stop and think, "I'm alive, and being alive is fantastic!" Every time such a thing happens, you are part of the Circus of John Drake!

As Drake's figure fades from sight, the last words can be heard "Actually, I stole that from the Seven Faces of Dr. Lao. Still cool though. Auf wiedersehennn (voice fades to nothingness).

517 (From a great distance) Scary movie to watch as a kid, but the farcical bits become more prominent when you view it later. Check out the book they based it on - a very, very dark bit of fantasy. Ray Bradbury based Something Wicked This Way Comes on both the book and the movie. Great performance by Tony Curtis - he even took the trouble to learn how to pronounce "Lao" correctly. Now I've got to see if I can do some island-hopping along the Aleutians - the Caspian Sea beckons!
