(KOIN) — An Oregon felon wanted for second-degree kidnapping, reckless endangerment and illegal gun possession charges was tracked down in a porta-potty after he allegedly led authorities on a three-day chase through rural Lane County. The Lane County Sheriff’s Office said that 33-year-old Andrew Hamilton Dimmick of Crawfordsville was seen wielding a sword and huffing nitrous oxide at 11 a.m. near Terwilliger Hot Springs on Saturday. Dimmick left the area before Oregon State Police arrived on scene. However, a sheriff’s deputy found Dimmick driving in the area and attempted to make a traffic stop. Dimmick allegedly fled from the pursuing deputy, who chased him down a gravely U.S. Forest Service road. My guess? There are citizens of Ohio and Maryland wish that Mayor Buttplug would give a damn about them. LAS VEGAS (AP) — A $12 billion passenger bullet train linking Las Vegas and the Los Angeles area was dubbed the first true high-speed rail line in the nation on Monday, with the private company building it predicting millions of ticket-buyers will be boarding trains by 2028. “People have been dreaming of high-speed rail in America for decades,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg before taking a stage with union representatives and company officials at the future site of a terminal to be built just south of the Las Vegas Strip. “It’s really happening this time.” Buttigieg cited Biden administration support for the project that he said will bring thousands of union jobs, boost local economies and cut traffic and air pollution. He was also heard to utter the following, "Well, fvck me to tears!" Tonight's ONT has been brought to you by Relief. Notice: Posted with permission by the Ace Media Empire & AceCorp, LLC. Yay, German Beer Day ONT!
Hey, it was that or International Nosepicking Day. I'd rather drink. Posted by: Blanco Basura - Z28.310 From the country that established the Reinheitsgebot ("purity order for beer") in 1516 and Oktoberfest in 1811, beer is something where Deutsche obsessiveness has led to wondrous things. Denmark has been giving them a run for their money with Carlsberg, and some people (not yours truly) like the Dutch varieties, but Deutschland does some world-class brewing. My wife and I have often joked about how, if the stars align properly, that we would make the pilgrimage to Theresienwiese and might even wear the Trachen for Heilbromm, the Stadt my father's family came from. Or from mom's side, where we'd have the choice of Leuthen or the Swiss Canton of Thurgau. Posted by: John Drake at April 23, 2024 10:22 PM (+OBLx) 76

Conundrum: 1) Biden's JA (Job Approval) today is 39 in the Rasmussen Daily Presidential Tracking Poll. That's the lowest it's been all YEAR. However... 2) The RCP summary of betting markets today (Predictit, etc.) has Biden favored to beat Trump by 1.6%. As recently as Feb. 24th, Trump led Biden 44-26 in this metric. Unlike many on the Right, I'm actually quite fond of trains, and theoretically, I would like them to be more widely used in America. But unless you find a way to make them cost-effective in comparison to cars on highways, it ain't happening.
Posted by: Dr. T I like trains too. I have ridden trains in Europe (rode the TGV in France once, at 180 mph), and trains in China, etc. And they are all...sort of, subsidized. For instance, the pension fund for railway and transit workers in France is financed by gasoline and diesel taxes (at the pump). And a lot of things in China are subsidized by the government, because for a long time, they were running huge trade surpluses, which are falling now. topical for today - several people are noticing that these "demonstrations" at Columbia and elsewhere are *not* spontaneous as they pretend to be, but in fact are highly organized and very well funded. (their campsites show large numbers of identical, expensive pre-positioned tents for the protestors to stay in)
So, who is funding and organizing this? My guess is Neville Singh, a maoist millionaire who's wife helped found Code Pink. He stays out of the headlines, but is the one behind all sorts of nastiness going on in the US. If you haven't heard of him, you'll ask "is he affiliated with Iran? Or some other muslim country?" and the answer is no. He has always gotten a great deal of his fortune from the Chinese Communist Party, and he acts as a high level agent for them in the financial sector. Thing is about the "high-speed" rail, once you get from Rancho Cucamonga to Vegas, you're still going to need a car to get around. Vegas is pretty spread out.
So the calculation that the potential users do is this: do the savings on fuel, and the slight savings in time justify the cost of a car rental or Uber while in Vegas, plus the aggravations of being stuck in a metal tube with a bunch of other assholes for 2 hours? Or should I take a commuter jet, and be there in 40 minutes.? Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at April 23, 2024 10:47 PM (tkR6S) 190

_________ Word is that it's Qatar's government is behind a lot of it. They have provided shelter and support for Hamas leadership (more so than Iran... which more or less just funnels weapons to them.) And... a large number of these "protesters" are Qatar leadership's kids here on visas. But... the funneling of money for it is allowed by the junta. So, that's a problem. However... 2) The RCP summary of betting markets today (Predictit, etc.) has Biden favored to beat Trump by 1.6%. As recently as Feb. 24th, Trump led Biden 44-26 in this metric. Polling, at least the stuff that is published, is just propaganda now.
I read a book on the history of political polling a while back. The author thrashed around, trying to explain how polling wasn't reflecting the final election results. Unfortunately, the idea that it all just an op didn't occur to him. Posted by: Idaho Spudboy at April 23, 2024 11:35 PM (uqx1e) 275

Progressive Rep. Summer Lee fended off a primary challenge from Edgewood Borough Council member Bhavini Patel, NBC News projects, in a race that served as an early test of how Democratic voters feel about the Israel-Hamas war and concerns over rising antisemitism at home. With 99% of the expected vote counted, Lee held a 21-point edge over Patel. I actually got dressed this afternoon, and swept, vacuumed, and swiffered the floors in the kitchen and my bedroom here, making my immediate environment more sanitary, which is good for the spirit, too. And picked up some debris outside, too! I have taken my nightly quota of pills, and will soon hit the sack. Look forward to putting in a regular day tomorrow.

If you want to get somewhere in a hurry (or even on time ) a train is not for you. OTOH, if you enjoy siting in your own private (liitle) room, reading, or sitting in the bar car with a drink in your hand watching America go by, it's great.
I've ridden the Broadway Limited, the Capitol Limited, the Empire Builder and the California Zephyr. Ulcer inducing if you're on a schedule, relaxing as hell if you aren't. I think the Bright Line to Vegas will be successful. If you're heading for Fremont or the Strip for the nightlife, you don't want your own car. Traffic is a nightmare and parking is expensive (For those who haven't been to LV for awhile, free parking at the Casinos is a fond memory). Take the train, avoid hours of boredom, take Uber and avoid frustration, expense and the possibility of a DUI. 500 mile round trip @ 25 mpg and $4.50/gal = $90. That same professor -outwardly very mild-mannered, but word got out that he had done some sort of work in Army Counter-Intelligence. That might have been the reason he was posted as a military attaché, not sure.
But it does underscore the way he interacted with students - namely, his office was on the west side of the academic hall, and office hours were in the afternoon. When you came by, the curtains were fully pulled back and the window was full of blazing sunlight, and he had his desk positioned where he was directly in front of it, so that all you saw was something between a blur and a silhouette. Posted by: Miklos needs a new onion, he realizes With that guy, I do honestly wonder - he was LDS and very devout, and looked wholesome as all get out, but there were little quirks. For example, he would say, "Let's see, we've got a quiz scheduled for Thursday of next week, yes?" Way off from the actual date. Some idiot would take the bait and say "Yes!" Then his expression would completely change and he'd say in this very cold "now I've got you" voice, "Then why did I tell you before it was going to be *this* Tuesday?" The whole class would be stunned and that kid probably felt like he was about to be sent to the gray-bar hotel. He was a great professor, but nobody messed with him, and I'm pretty certain that anyone contemplating cheating in any of his courses would reconsider. I mean like big Life decisions reconsider, shuddering at the very idea of it. Posted by: John Drake at April 24, 2024 01:39 AM (+OBLx) 380

I'm actually surprised and a little miffed that we haven't launched more 'Voyagers' of even better technology, better instrumentation and better power generators. Elon Musk's Falcons can put a payload into orbit cheaply, starting at $500K. It would be at least an order of magnitude cheaper then what NASA spent launching V'gers.

Odd experience today. Went to see Randy to give him towing bill, covered by car insurance. He always had his big dog Wrigley there in recent yrs. Part yellow lab he looked just like our Bailey, about the same age, but a bit bigger. Maybe topped out at 120 lbs vs Bailey at 102.
As Bailey has been failing I wondered if I would see Wrigley. No Wrigley so I asked Randy, he said Wrigley died Feb 11, then looked at the calendar, said no and was determined to figure out the exact day. Finally said it was Feb 16, it was important to him to get the exact date right to tell me. I gave him my sympathies and told him Bailey was on her way out, just turned 14 on Apr 14. Big ole labs just don't live as long as smaller breeds. As I drove away from the insurance agency the song that came on was "Forever Young". I thought of Bailey as a pup and almost teared up at her current decrepit state. We finally decided Sun to have her put down and the appt is Thurs, this intervening time is bittersweet. Farmer -that is horrible, and my heart goes out to you. Use this time you still have to show Bailey how much all of you love her, and, when it's time, be there in the room with her for the process. It sounds harsh, but vets have told me it actually makes the procedure go more peacefully for the pet. Hold her head and hold her as much as you can - it calms her down and makes the process easier for her.
