Daily Tech News 23 April 2024

Top Story

  • Australia has elbowed Brazil out of the way and decided that it is going to be the new global censor. (MSN)

An Australian federal court has ordered Twitter and Facebook to take down a video wherein a Christian bishop was stabbed in his own church by a Usual Suspect... Globally.

You are not permitted to know that this happened, because it might, I don't know, look bad for Usual Suspects.

(Note that the other recent stabbing in Sydney that made the news was a random mentally ill man, who, while known to the police, was not a Usual Suspect.)

In the ensuing brouhaha a senator from Tasmania has asserted that Elon Musk should go to jail and Australia's nominally conservative party leader has covered himself in shit and given full-throated support for the nonsense.

Sorry. I didn't vote for any of these idiots.

  • Journalists for Censorship has also given this their thumbs up. (The Register)

"I never thought the leopards would eat my face", sobs woman who voted for the Leopards Eating People's Faces Party.

Tech News

  • Meanwhile the US government is not only spying on you, it is forcing everyone else to spy on you. (Ars Technica)

I have a solution: Attach the video of that stabbing in Sydney to every email and tweet you send.

  • DDR5 now officially goes to 11... Um, 8800. (AnandTech)

Previously the specification only covered speeds up to 6400MHz, but now there's an official standard for 8800MHz RAM.

Which used to be a lot.

  • Huawei wants to take its "home grown" HarmonyOS global. (The Register)

    It's Android.

It's a bad version of Android.

The first review version they shipped still said "Android" in many places.

  • Hands on with Tiny11Builder - debloating Windows 11. (Thurrott.com)

This looks like far too much work given the price of SSDs these days.

Though given that my laptop spat out its new SSD, maybe.

  • In lighter news, someone has found a solution to the AI porn bots plaguing Twitter right now: Literally Hitler. (Twitter)

The bots are using commercially available AI services, and if you post anything relating to Hitler they melt down and instead of being invited to view fifth-rate porn you get a flood of replies saying:
I'm sorry, but I cannot fulfil this request as it promotes a hateful and negative ideology. Please let me know how I can assist you with another topic. #cool
It's like dealing with vampires, only you use swastikas instead of crosses.

Disclaimer: Given how things are going, you might want to stock up on both.

The greatest guilt of today is that of people who accept collectivism by moral default; the people who seek protection from the necessity of taking a stand, by refusing to admit to themselves the nature of that which they are accepting; the people who support plans specifically designed to achieve serfdom, but hide behind the empty assertion that they are lovers of freedom, with no concrete meaning attached to the word; the people who believe that the content of ideas need not be examined, that principles need not be defined, and that facts can be eliminated by keeping one's eyes shut. They expect, when they find themselves in a world of bloody ruins and concentration camps, to escape moral responsibility by wailing: "But I didn't mean this!"

92 You can't falter in your defense from the ultraviolent right wing.

BlackRock chief executive Larry Fink's efforts to push 'wokesim' or environmental, social, and governance policies across corporate America have been in reverse in recent years amid the backlash from Republican lawmakers on Capitol Hill and 19 state attorneys general in conservative states, including Arizona and Texas, who have been fed up with ESG-related policies hurting the economy.

Supposedly, the backlash by anti-woke activists has forced BlackRock to triple Fink's home security spending. Financial Times says the CEO has become "a target for anti-woke activists and conspiracy theorists."

It's being pushed as STEM now. No joke. We went and toured a TVA hydroelectric dam and there was a big sign up encouraging girls to go into STEM fields like archaeology because the feds need three or four archaeologists for each state.

It was about then that I began forming my hypothesis that one (1) state school could supply all the archaeology majors, philosophy majors, African American Studies majors, etc. required for the entire nation, and realized how much wasted time and money was flowing through the academic system.

180 Apparently because asshole ADD tourists want bells, whistles, videos and Morgan Freeman entertaining their worthless pig-ignorant asses instead of being quietly respectful at a Texas shrine.

And of course a Bush is involved.

Yeah, but P ran for AG because he realized people were onto him as Land Commissioner, where he was incompetent. He lost the primary runoff 68-32.

I was there the day before the eclipse. As I suspected, much love for Phil Collins was shown there as he amassed a huge collection of Alamo artifacts. He is a HUGELY obsessive Alamo scholar. If you go into the nearby museum, you can visit a panorama where he narrates a summary of the Battle of the Alamo.

183 Boy, 7, finally CONFESSES to shooting dead a 32-year-old man in his sleep two years ago - as cops reveal why he WON'T face charges

He might need killing as I suspect he'll murder someone else.

188 >This looks like far too much work given the price of SSDs these days.

The point of Tiny11 is to strip out processes and services, not so much save disk space. I suspect they advertise the smaller size as a simple metric to fool people into thinking that corrupting the system binaries has actual benefits or something.

There's no market for OSes any more so there's no incentive for Microsoft to make a modular Windows based on a minimal core, at least not on the desktop.

189 It would be amusing if thousands of people emailed the Australian Federal court to turn in their (attached) copy of the stabbing, or any subsequent banned video.

Yes, it works.

But it's *yet another* pain in the ass.
