15 Sebastian (Latin: Sebastianus; c. AD 255 – c. AD 28 was an early Christian saint and martyr. According to traditional belief, he was killed during the Diocletianic Persecution of Christians. He was initially tied to a post or tree and shot with arrows, though this did not kill him. He was, according to tradition, rescued and healed by Irene of Rome, which became a popular subject in 17th-century painting. In all versions of the story, shortly after his recovery he went to Diocletian to warn him about his sins, and as a result was clubbed to death.[1][2] He is venerated in the Catholic Church and the Orthodox Church.

1. Unless he was previously "manspreading", the arrow in the leg was shot from a very weird direction.
2. The arrows appear to have practice points on them.

37 On a related note and touching on a long term Horde topic, I remember seeing a recreation of bows/armor from the hundred years war.

They recreated the longbow of the time and the arrows and had a trained modern archer fire at a re-creation of a French breastplate.

Even at short range the longbow could not pierce the french armor.

45 This is such a powerful image. Sebastian's unblemished skin and body pierced by the violence of the arrows and those who shot them. As usual, van Honthorst captures such accurate musculature and skin tones. (CBD has used other paintings by this artist.) His ability to use lighting, especially artificial lighting effectively is remarkable. The dark background makes Sebastian's body and injuries almost pop out at the viewer.

I wonder if this image was in Robert Heinlein's mind when he described Smith's destruction at the end of "Stranger In A Strange Land". It immediately brought it to my mind.

I *think* the rain of arrows mostly just disorganized and exhausted the French soldiers with the occasional arrow/splintered arrow hitting a weak spot and causing an injury which then helped the English melee troops kill the French as they finally got to the English line.

87 That arrow in the chest would be squarely in the left ventricle.. It is medial to the mid-clavicular line, medial to and slightly below the left nipple, and clearly above the diaphragm. It is in about the sixth intercostal space and lacking emergency cardiac surgical capabilities (or divine intervention) would be clearly lethal.

Unless St. Sebastian had situs inversus, which would make this a lung shot.

Honthorst must have seen many depictions of the saint’s martyrdom during the period that he worked in Rome, but he likely painted this work a few years after he returned to his native Utrecht in 1620. There were a number of outbreaks of the plague in Utrecht between 1624 and 1626, and Sebastian was revered as a ‘plague saint’, believed to offer protection against the deadly and highly contagious disease.

The body part which the French proposed to cut off of the English after defeating them was, of course, the middle finger, without which it is impossible to draw the renowned English longbow.

This famous weapon was made of the native English yew tree, and so the act of drawing the longbow was known as "plucking yew".

Thus, when the victorious English waved their middle fingers at the defeated French, they said, "See, we can still pluck yew! PLUCK YEW!"

178 Fire arrows: One of the first forms of weaponized gunpowder, fire arrows have been in use since the 9th century. The fire arrow earned its name from the Chinese term ‘huojian,’ which literally translates to ‘fire arrow.’

Fire arrows were not very popular due to their low effectiveness – the speed of the arrow would often extinguish the flame.

Shouldn't be blood in a facial.

Posted by: rickb223 at April 26, 2024 10:30 AM (0hu/3)

187 "Vampire facial" is the common name for a platelet-rich plasma microneedling procedure. In this treatment, a patient's blood is drawn, spun down to separate out plasma from blood cells, and the platelet-rich plasma is then injected into the face with microneedles. It's claimed—with little evidence—that it can rejuvenate and improve the look of skin, and got notable promotions from celebrities, including Gwyneth Paltrow and Kim Kardashian.

-
Boy, it's hard to believe a procedure endorsed by both Gwyneth Paltrow AND Kim Kardashian could go wrong.

194 Scoop: Biden changes walking routine to Marine One

President Biden has introduced a change to his White House departure and return routine. Instead of walking across the South Lawn to and from Marine One by himself, he's now often surrounded by aides.

Why it matters: With aides usually walking between Biden and journalists' camera position outside the White House, the visual effect is to draw less attention to the 81-year-old's halting and stiff gait.
----------

First, Biden hasn't changed anything. He doesn't know what day it is.

Second, they're not "drawing less attention", they are "blocking media access".

Unless you wanted to recycle (contra to the business model), you have to get a new one the next time you think you might get laid.

I have seen some stupid business ideas... on the other hand monetizing a guy's desire to get laid is a surefire winner- as long as it does not make him feel stupid. At least Axe body spray/cologne is at least theoretically working for you.

HIV is remarkably fragile, iirc. It would have to be blood fairly fresh from the tap and the ladies would have to have some sort of abrasion on their faces.

That's why anal sex is such a good transmission. At the risk of offending any gay or inclined members of the horde, the anus is not made to have a cock thundering through it. Damage results. Now all you need is an abrasion on said dick, and you have your path of emission and contraction.

I used some of my Dad's Old Spice at first, then moved to Drakker. I don't remember what it smelled like, but it was probably pretty bad. Back then (70s), their slogan was "It may not put more women in your life, but it will put more life in your women."

This famous weapon was made of the native English yew tree, and so the act of drawing the longbow was known as "plucking yew".

Thus, when the victorious English waved their middle fingers at the defeated French, they said, "See, we can still pluck yew! PLUCK YEW!"
