First-World Problems...

candleflaw2.jpg

That is a Shabbat candle-holder. Two identical candles, lighted at the same time, yet one leaves a lot of wax at the base while the other burns perfectly.

This is the agony of Chez Dildo!

What can be done? Symmetry is apparently a thing of the past in our post-modern world. The fabric of the universe is torn!

About 6 years ago, we bought a new dishwasher. Supposed to be quality, supposed to last 20 years (though it's not warrantied for anywhere near that long).

About 4 years in, it starts throwing an error code. I'm told the fix will cost about as much as a new dishwasher. I fiddle with it for a while, and eventually it starts working again (no idea why, though I had some theories).

Earlier this year, it started throwing the same error, and nothing I tried worked. So after a few weeks, we bought a new dishwasher. I kept the old one, because I wanted to tinker with it. So the other day, I hooked it up to our laundry sink, and wouldn't you know it, the damn thing works again! Grrrr.....

80 Slap a level across the candle holding cups. They look uneven.
--
There are actual written articles for such problems, i.e., wikiHow Staff, How to Burn Candles Evenly

Candles “remember” how they burned previously, and tend to follow the same pattern during subsequent burns. If the wax around the edges never melted, the wick will sink into a crater of hardened wax in a process called tunneling.[1] You can use a few tricks to troubleshoot tunneling in pillar and poured candles, as well as drippy tapers. Pay close attention to the first burn and adopt habits like regularly trimming the wick, using a snuffer, and avoiding drafts to extend the life of your candles and help them burn evenly

Balancing the carbs is real easy if you have the tools for it. Simplest is the Uni-syn, costs only a few dollars. Benchmarks the air flow rate at carb A, transfer to carb B, and see if air flow is more or less, adjust throttle stop on carb B to correct. A shop that routinely tuned up exotic multi-carb engines would have a mercury manometer that could accurately measure engine vacuum in each branch of the intake tract simultaneously. Those cost hundreds of dollars.

Posted by: Don Black at April 21, 2024 02:52 PM (oCjPU)

There are freeware programs (Recuva, for one) that can try to get data off "broken" drives. Look online for "Hiren's Boot Disk". Used to be an actual disk image you could download and burn to a CD, that could boot a computer into several different OS's, and had a whole bunch of utilities to fix different problems, including corrupt drives. Hiren is not doing it anymore, but the project has taken on a life of its own. You can now make it into a bootable thumb drive.

At the other end of the scale, you can pay big $$ to have a service disassemble the drive in a clean room, and put the physical disc in a known good case, and read it from first principles.

Buy a rotating Shabbat candle-holder. Someone must make one; there's probably a conservative movement that would consider moving a candle "working on Shabbat."

Or put the boring non-motorized one on a turntable.

Which leads to my first-world problem..... trying to search the internet for a "turntable" when you don't mean the kind that plays vinyl records. You have to type "rotating display stand" instead. So much extra work!
