I love the New Guineans' implication that it's offensive not because of the suggestion they're cannibals, but because Biden family members are below their dietary standards.

112 Omaha is UP's headquarters. Every year, UP trundles "Big Boy" up for the College World Series baseball tounament. They have a special spot for it just outside the stadium and park it for the entire ten days. Oh, yeah, you can hear it pulling into Omaha and when it leaves. (Or, at least, I could hear it when we were still living in the house. The apartment is a good twenty miles south of where the house was.)

According to the late Mr. John Kennefick, Chairman of the board when I knew him, those big engines were built during WW II to make it easier and faster to move men and supplies from one end of the country to the other. UP kept them in action during a good portion of the Cold War -- just in case.

That was before I became the Barre Instructor to the Stars. In those days, I was a Labor and Employee Relations guru for a large company who had a site in South Bend. I worked with Mayor Pete and the site’s local leadership team on a few community things before negotiations. Which was good, because I ended up locking our employees out, which is never a fun labor move. It got political, as those things do, so I got to spend some time with him in his efforts to support the union and keep well paying jobs in his town.

Not subtle humor is hard for her. She has gotten quite a bit of the word play, even if it’s a little dark. It’s a big thing for her. She is turning 13 in June (holy smokes!), so it’s not inappropriate for her age and for me it’s fun to watch the lightbulb go off when she gets the jokes. It makes up for the rest.

She is finishing up The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe for a school reading assignment. Hopefully they cancel each other out! 😂

According to The Cat Daddy, a Savannah is extremely high energy and often indoor play is not enough to cool their jets. He recommends getting them used to a leash and walking them outside. They are more of a hunter than a typical house cat. They just don't need the outdoor exercise, they practically require it. That said, good luck.

If you put a harness on Sabi, he falls over sideways and won’t move. It paralyzes him. It’s hysterical. We do have cat trees that look like furniture all over, they have toys galore (dog ones, because cat ones would last 2 seconds). We get the Savannah 500 daily.

Poor J. He told me he didn’t like cats. He inherited Kovu with me and had no idea he had to outfit his home to accommodate them. He loves them now, because they are really cool, when they aren’t turning water faucets on or destroying something. Kovu is 11 and hasn’t slowed down a bit. Sabi is only 4, he bought him for my birthday so it’s his fault we have 2!

They are now laying down on the bed so I am hoping they got it all out and we can go to sleep. The Cat Daddy should also note they are incredible bed hogs. Good night for real this time!

286 The wooden bomb story has been around for years, literally since the wartime period itself.

There is a lot of anecdotal evidence, and it appears that the story spread on both the Axis and the Allied sides. Historians can't sort out whether it did or didn't happen - for example, the wooden bomb featured above strikingly resembles a Mark IV Aircraft Float Light, which worked as a smoke flare dropped over a sea surface to indicate drift, and which also floated emitting a light signal, which could aid in locating downed pilots.

Watching reaction videos, mostly from younger blacks, of Janis Joplin is fun. Now that women could belt out a song. And most are shocked by her soulful, bluesy voice that had such power. And they never heard of her.

The other fun thing, well two things, about the reaction videos are there are some pretty good tunes reacted to and they often mention the musicianship and showmanship in the old rock videos. That and the oft-mentioned, "No autotune!" Watching reactions of Roy Clark on 'The Odd Couple' playing 'Malaguena' put a smile on my face. 'Who is this guy?' Some of them are really funny in what they pick out from the songs of my youth. They try too often to read meaning into rock songs. Some songs are just songs, especially Top 40 ones. Good songs, mind you, just not heavy on meaning. Maybe double entendres, though.

Hybridize 'em. Stay with the boiler, but drive a multi-stage steam turbine, returning the used water to the water tank. Spin that turbine through a reduction box, pretty much same as a ship, but with some transmission speed ranges.

349 You know, of all our current modes of transportation, railroads would be the easiest to convert to fully electric with battery power. One, they are already very efficient at moving vast tonnages of freight with a small volume of fuel. Two, they are on tracks, so their routes are constrained to fixed distances. Three, their motive power is already, at the axle level, electric, so you'd simply be replacing Diesel and generators with storage batteries. Put just enough battery on each loco that it can move itself around the yard for half an hour. Remaining batteries are in boxcar-sized modules. Each battery would be good for X miles in flat country, and less in the mountains, but those amounts would be known to a high degree. At stops, depleted batteries would be swapped out for fresh ones, and the train sent on its way. A big train with remote locos in the middle would have remote batteries, too, of course. Battery charging stations could be built where rail lines pass under or near major power lines. I'm not saying this should be done, as there is no need for it, but it certainly could be done.

To this day? I hope not, but I can definitely say that you don't have to go back more than a couple of generations to see a lot of the German population who were, let's put it diplomatically, sore losers. Even if they make you as an Ami, if you're directly or even indirectly related, they did sometimes let their guard slip. One innocent phrase, die guten alten Zeiten (literally "the good old times") is one of the most sinister and hair-raising ever in that context. Because, as you can guess, they weren't looking fondly back to the days of Kaiser Wilhelm I or the Weimar Republic.

More fun with East Germans - met a fellow by the name of Ingo in grad school, who grew up in West Berlin. He constantly talked about how they would mess with the East Germans on the other side of the Wall, since on their side they could often drive right up to it.

They harassed them constantly - called it "bordering." The stunt he was most proud of was when he and his teenage friends were able to mount a ladder in a flatbed truck and get close enough to the top of the Berlin Wall to toss several concrete blocks over. When they made impact, one or more of the blocks set off a landmine, and that whole sector of East Berlin came alive. Searchlights everywhere, dogs barking, Stasi all over the place! He said it took them several hours before things calmed down. And then Ingo and company drove a few miles further down, and did it again!

I immediately had an image of Stasi Grunts Dieter and Karl cursing the cold, stamping their feet, and dragging on those horrible cigarettes they had in the German Democratic Republic, when they hear a creaking noise. 425 Boiled peanuts are okay, I guess. Never heard of them, or tried them, until my 20s.

They're not readily available here.

What gets me are kids being permanently mutilated, either with drugs or with 'surgeons' scalpels. All in the name of what? Lies? It's abhorrent. There was a recent Brit report (Cass Report?) slamming child gender transitioning. More and more countries are seeing the ramifications of this crazed, perverted 'Heinz 57 genders' ideology. But ol' Dementia Joe will stand up for them. Maybe. Because he thinks everyone's talking about the trans in his corvette.

428 Whatever happened to the term "transvestite?"

It sounds too much like "playing dress-up," and they want to be treated like adults?

429 JQ, you can't make peanut soup with boiled peanuts. Peanut soup is a Tidewater, Virginia hidden and delicious specialty.

436 Hybridize 'em. Stay with the boiler, but drive a multi-stage steam turbine, returning the used water to the water tank. Spin that turbine through a reduction box, pretty much same as a ship, but with some transmission speed ranges.

Torque to the wheels would be smooooth.

And they could still burn windmill scrap. lol

Pennsy RR tried that with their turbine steam engine, the 6200, back in the 40's. Very inefficient at low speeds. Lionel made a gazillon of their version back in the 50's. I have two running on my layout.

Link to Wiki on the S2 steam turbine engine.

438 Churchill allowed the Germans to run "minor" bombing missions on non-essential British towns and places to hide the fact that they had cracked the Enigma Code. If the Brits defended every single bombing mission the Germans would have discovered this.
