Democrats Save Mike Johnson's Ukraine Spending Package

Yayyyy, bipartisanship!

With the support of Democrats, the House Rules Committee has advanced Speaker Mike Johnson's package of foreign aid bills for Ukraine and Israel. The legislation, which overcame significant opposition from congressional Republicans, will now be voted on by the full House over the weekend.

Key Details:

The House Rules Committee voted 9-3 to advance the package, with Democratic support being a rare occurrence for Republican bills.

Republican Reps. Chip Roy, Thomas Massie, and Ralph Norman voted against the rule, expressing frustration that aid to Ukraine was not paired with conservative border security provisions.

...

The package of bills providing aid to Israel, Ukraine, and other allies was advanced after Democrats took the unusual step of supporting a procedural vote for Republican bills. This move was met with opposition from Republican Reps. Chip Roy, Thomas Massie, and Ralph Norman, who voted against the rule due to their dissatisfaction that aid to Ukraine was not paired with conservative border security provisions.

...

House Speaker Mike Johnson had previously pushed to pair aid to Ukraine with border security provisions. However, his efforts were met with resistance, leading to several rules failing on the floor, largely due to objections from the right flank of the party. Despite calls from several members of the Republican conference to raise the threshold to bring a motion to oust the speaker, Johnson announced that the House "will continue to govern under the existing rules."

BREAKING: The House just voted overwhelmingly to advance the foreign aid bill for Ukraine, Israel, Taiwan, and Gaza.

The vote was 316-94 with 165 Democrats and 151 Republicans voting yes.

Up next, there's going to be separate vote on foreign aid to each nation which will then be fused together in one package that will be sent to a senate in a procedural move known as MIRV.

No border security, no amendments, just Republican leadership working with Democrats to fund wars across the globe.

Appropriate, really. A MIRV is an "multiple independently targetable reentry vehicle" - a multi-warhead design that lets you send multiple warheads to the enemy on a single rocket.

That's retarded, sir.

If copyright is surrendered, it enters the public domain. You can't just go and claim it for yourself.

Not to mention that this might not be copyrightable anyway, because it was produced in connection with a crime. And even if it is copyrightable, and somehow these people can claim to own the copyright, that doesn't justify secrecy and fair use would certainly apply anyway.

This is pretty dumb.

131 Mike Johnson Finds a Way, Despite the Odds. House Speaker Mike Johnson is on the verge of doing something hardly anyone expected: passing a comprehensive foreign aid package that adequately funds the Ukrainians in their fight against the Russians.

Johnson has made himself the primary target of the Freedom Caucus by requiring Democrats to come to his aid on the Rules Committee. After the committee vote, Johnson won’t be done relying on Democrats: He’ll need their votes to pass the rule to bring the bills to the House floor, and maybe again to fend off an attempt by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene and her allies to oust him.

Johnson’s gambit depends on his getting support from Democrats on the Rules Committee. But here’s the thing: That just doesn’t happen. Like, ever. The Twitter account Ringwiss notes that “It would appear that never in recorded history have minority members of the Rules Committee voted in favour of reporting a rule to make up for majority votes against it.”

I want to stress that this is not a done deal by any means. Many things can happen in the next 48 hours that could blow it all up.

162 My favorite bit of historical idiocy from a politician was when someone said that without copyright, we'd never have Shakespeare...who wrote without copyright and had his stuff stolen all the time.

Almost all of Shakespeare's plays are adaptations of earlier works. IIRC The Tempest is the only actual original plot; the rest were really just punched up with better dialogue. (And a character tweaked here and there.)

That's not a slam on the Bard. Trends change-- sometimes adaptations are all the rage, sometimes not.

163 What you stop to think about it, this shithole Johnson is basically saying "I don't give a shit that this country is going down in flames, we're going to send taxpayer money all over the globe, to satisfy our corporate overlords."

Most people don't think - I know that. I know it by just a little over fifty years of observation.

Most people, early on, develop a set of behaviors. And those don't change. We call them "beliefs" - I call them "faiths". And their typical response, when the currents of life run counter to their set course, is to row harder. Like a boat with no sail and no rudder.

That's people.

165 Not really cheering for it, but a Russian victory over Ukraine could open the Ukraine files for the world to see just how deep the corruption in Ukraine really runs. I've long since concluded that Ukraine is one of the key hotspots / transfer points for world-wide corruption. If those files are ever opened, we would learn that there isn't a significant politician in the world who is not dancing to some tune which is being called through that corrupt network.

249 Johnson's doing what he's doing because this is what he's being paid for. They all do it. They all have a price. His price to be uber-RINO was met.

If someone's price isn't met they'll vote however they feel... or vote "present." Or not vote at all.

Personally, I think the left generally has a grip on the majority of the funds congress has access to so they can bribe themselves. It would, perhaps, explain why so many of the GOP vote with the left even though it's against their constituent's wishes.

To fix this, the processes that put these assholes in office needs to be fixed first.

The grift has about run its course at the national level. I stand by an earlier prediction that this is the GOP's last competitive federal election. The Left will try to prop it up because it also needs, albeit less frequently, an excuse for what it does, too, but that may be too big of a lift. I wouldn't be shocked if the subsequent bundling of the Ukraine and Israel money is solely for the benefit of the Left, to wit, their base would and may still go apeshit over money going to Tel Aviv. Pay attention to this 'unrealized gains' taxation proposal for a Biden second term. I don't think even the uniparty is in favor of flat out communism and wealth redistribution. But if we don't keep the (D)'s out of office it will become real.

That's the only reason I vote (R) anymore. 'Prevent defence' - and I know the line that 'the only thing the prevent defence does is prevent you from winning'. But that's football and not the tax code.

This is what the GOP is. This is what it always does, like clockwork. The GOP claims to stand for X, Y and Z (they tell you it's raining) and then proceed to partner with their pals in the "other party" to do the opposite (they piss on you).

The GOP does not believe anything it *tells* you it believes, and neither do its members in good standing. A damn near perfect track record of open collaboration with the "other party" belies its stated positions.

This is the GOP. This is what courses through its veins and directs its compass. The party itself is exactly what it looks like. If you're not down with it, you - not they - are the "in name only" member of that party.

The likes of Rand Paul and Matt Gaetz - the ones who appear to believe the stated positions (or will at least pretend to) are the odd men out, and are hated by their "own" party while often-disparaged so-called "RINOs" all hang out after work and have a drink together with their "opponents" in the "other party."

So which ones are "name-only" Republicans in reality? It's folks like Matt Gaetz and Rand Paul.

As has been noted elsewhere, these Gopes tend to come from so-called "red" states.

Complacent voters, pulling the lever for incumbents. And then when people get sick of the "turncoats," some stalwart conservative, like say, an Eyepatch Crenshaw comes along and tells everyone how conservative he is, you guys, and voters vote for him.

Then it takes another decade or three to get that slimy prick out of his chair. Rinse, lather, repeat.

348 If Johnson can get the border bill passed then he can say "Ta daa"

Otherwise, this guy should be metaphorically shanked

It should have been included in the "MIRV". The fact that it's not means that he can't get it passed, so it's all about optics on the surrender. Good luck to him - this would have worked in 2004, but not in 2024. That's the silver lining I guess

349 Someone once told me that if your friends won't trade with you and you can't do business with your enemies you won't accomplish much. Sometimes you gotta go along to get along but you gotta stand on principles.

I don't think Johnson or the GOP have principles. It remains to be seen if Gaetz and Jordan do. When it comes time to draw the ire of everyone for standing on principle, we'll see how those two do.

351 KJP tells reporters the White House has no official statement about Israel's strikes on Iranian targets last night, and she's going to be "super mindful"* and not speak to some reports that may be out there or speculate about anything. The reporters keep asking and asking, though.

So, Loser Joe and the DNC are still strategerizing about what they can say that will cost them the fewest votes in Dearbornistan. I guess CAIR has not yet told Joe how to dance on this one.

*Super mindful is a term she's now using 30+ times every press conference; it's her go-to delay tactic now and it gives her an all-purpose reason she can't answer any embarrassing questions. As in, I have to be super-mindful that investigations of the events at Columbia yesterday are on-going, so I'm going to be super-mindful and not respond to any questions on this.

What a stupid, execrable person.
