The ONT Is Coming! The ONT Is Coming!

Listen my children and you shall hear
Of the midnight ride of Paul Revere,
On the eighteenth of April, in Seventy-five;
Hardly a man is now alive
Who remembers that famous day and year.

revere.jpg

It's likely that Revere would have shouted “The Regulars are coming out!” rather than “The British are coming”. The later makes no sense considering that the Colonies considered themselves British. It wasn't until the next day, at Lexington and Concord, that they became Americans.

This Is Bizarre

This may be the strangest story I've read in a while.

21-year-old student from Pune and the curious case of her changing hands

(right click, inspect, settings, disable javascript, refresh to bypass paywall)

Explaining the shift, Pune-based physiotherapist Ketaki Doke, who has been working with Shreya, says behind this could be the muscle reconditioning itself to the new host. “The nerve begins to send signals, it is called reinnervation, and the muscles function according to body needs. A man will have muscle function different from a woman. The muscles in her hand may have started adapting to a female body,” says Doke, adding, “It was still not anticipated that her hands will transform so much.”

In the last 3-4 months, Shreya’s mother Suma noticed that her fingers were becoming leaner, slightly longer. “I see her hand every day. The fingers have become like a woman’s, the wrist is smaller. These are remarkable changes,” she says.

Iyer, from Amrita Institute, says they never anticipated such changes. “This is our first case of male-to-female hand transplant. We can only guess that female hormones have led to the change but assessing the exact cause is difficult,” he says.

So the transplanted hands were beefier and more muscular, because the donor was male, and also had much darker skin. Over time, the skin tone lightened to match her natural color, and the hands themselves became more slender and feminine. That's just amazing.

The best restaurant for Tex-Mex in Tyler, according to diners—plus, see the runners-up

The article is crap – 2 of the 12 restaurants are fast food and there's no mention of places that are actually good like El Norteno, Jalpita's or Ruby's, but if you read between the lines it becomes apparent what they did. They wrote an intro paragraph and then had a bot collect the 12 highest rated places in the Tex Mex category on Yelp. Boom! Instant content. Wish I could figure out how to automate the ONT like that.

Meet The Press

Tucker Carlson’s Turn

So what the hell happened to Tucker Carlson?

The skepticism that served him well in the Trump years when much of the fourth estate behaved like an opposition political party has led him all the way around the horseshoe. His opposition to the people he hates—liberals and neocons—has turned him into Noam Chomsky in a bow tie.

I'm of two minds here. Yes, Tucker can get out on the fringes sometimes. Some of his recent blatherings about how wonderful the Potempkin village the Russians showed him were just embarrassing. But the main beef the author of this piece seems to have with Tucker is that he has interviewed people he doesn't like. That should be the job of journalists. Interviewing Putin gives us a chance to see the man and hear what he has to say. That's information, and the job of the news should be to inform. Also, since in the article the author openly poo-poos the idea that the FBI influenced the Jan 6 demonstrators in any way or that the 2020 election was anything other than squeaky clean, I don't think he has much room to talk about people not being grounded in reality.

Just The Tax, Ma'am

Here are the massive tax increases coming your way in a second Biden term

Biden’s written plan calls for a small business tax hike, a corporate tax hike, a capital gains and dividends tax hike, income tax hikes, energy tax hikes and even a second Death Tax on top of the first one.
Biden would increase the corporate income tax from today’s 21% to 28%. That’s a higher tax rate than communist China and France and the U.K., each at 25%.

Now add the average state corporate income tax at 4% and the average combined Biden rate would be 32%. That would be the second-highest corporate income tax in the developed world. Just below Colombia.

Biden promises to impose a tax on "unrealized gains." If your land or stock account has increased in value in the last year you would pay taxes on the unrealized gain. You have not sold the property; you do not have the income. It isn’t "real." Yet you will be taxed as if you had made the sale and received the income.

And to think our founders rebelled and founded this country in protest over a 2% tax on tea. How low we have fallen.

And Now For A Different Perspective

What Is It Good For? Absolutely Nothing

America Is Now in the Business of Losing Wars

Obviously, America ought not involve itself in foreign conflicts in which we are unwilling to stay the course. American interests dictate pragmatism. But we've gone far beyond that. Now we're telling our allies that they can't win victories in conflicts in which they are willing to stay the course and in which they can win.

We will actively step in to prevent victory.

And so our enemies grow stronger. They have no such Hamlet-like moral qualms. They push where there is mush. Should Israel accede to America's request to leave Hamas in place in Rafah, Hezbollah will challenge Israel in the north; Iranian proxies will challenge Israel in the West Bank; Iran will up the ante in Yemen and the Red Sea. Israel and Saudi Arabia will be forced to search for new allies and new weapons. The world will significantly become more dangerous.

It turns out that the alternative to an America confident in its own moral role -- and an America willing to stand with its allies -- is a world of chaos. We are now living in that world. And things will get much, much worse before the end of this era of moral vacillation and cowardice in the face of evil.

There's only one way to win a war and achieve a lasting peace. You have to kill the enemy, and keep killing them until they have had enough and say “No more”. Then and only then can you start defining a post-war world. If the enemy doesn't believe that they have been defeated, all you do is give them a chance to rearm and regroup, and sooner or later start fighting again. Not only is this endlessly bloody, it is ultimately immoral and in the long run far costlier.

The Face Of Evil

Texas gender clinic dubbed 'Frankenstein's lab' performs hundreds of experimental surgeries each year - including giving patients a penis AND vagina and 'Barbie-dolling' clients by removing both

No comment. But I pray there will come a reckoning. And that it will be unbelievably harsh.

Good Advice

For many Gen Z students, skipping college for a trade may be their best bet

The median pay for new construction hires was $48,089 last year, compared to $39,520 for new hires in professional services. According to payroll-services provider ADP, pay for new hires in construction increased 5.1% last year, nearly double the increase for professional services.

Trade jobs are also less subject to replacement by AI and other technologies. Some tech exec might make good money before student loan payments, but he’ll pay some kid a fortune to unclog his toilet.

If there’s a dummy in that scenario, it ain’t the kid.

We were extremely pleased when Little said he wanted to go into the trades. He's finishing his first year in the welding program at the local junior college, and doing quite well. All this and no student loans to worry about.

Tonight's ONT has been brought to you by radial power:

In Boston and surround New England, they were also known as Lobsterbacks, for obvious local ocean cuisine reasons. But I think Revere, et.al., were warning of the Regulars coming.

It's like they didn't say, when in battle line, 'ready aim, fire!' They were smooth bore muskets, there was no 'aiming'. The actual order was 'ready, level, fire!' Then hope you hit someone.

90 Taxing unrealized gains is the same as arresting people for thinking about murder.
Posted by: AlaBAMA

Seriously, if you're Elon Musk, Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos, etc etc, how do you even pay a tax like that? And 90% of those dorks are on the Demofascist side.

Biden wants the "unrealized gains" to be taxed like any other long-term capital gains. So at 20% for the guys in their tax bracket.

As an example, Bezos owns 55M shares of Amazon. It appreciated about $80 per share over the last 12 months, from about $100 to about $180.

If he has to pay 20% of that gain to the government, he has to come up with $880,000,000 in cash. Just for his Amazon stock, never mind anything else he owns.

So everyone in the country has to liquidate 20% of their holdings every year to come up with the cash to pay their taxes. That certainly won't crash the stock market.

Bezos is going to have Biden assassinated if he tries this. He might do it personally.

94 For Democrats, taxes are now merely punitive on their political enemies or to discourage behaviors they don't like.

Democrats currently believe in the related concepts of Modern Monetary Theory and that deficits just don't matter.

However, if deficits don't matter, then there is no reason for taxes and the millions of man-hours wasted every year for businesses to comply with the tax accounting rules.

Every year there is a re-enactment of the battle at the Lexington and Concord. Those of us who grew up around the area used to visit back when we did things like history and school field trips.

One of the defining parts of those fights and a big reason the vastly outnumbered and out trained citizens were able to beat back the British is because they used what were essentially guerrilla tactics. Hiding in the woods and shooting at the British who were marching in formation in their red coats.

Pissed the Brits off but that was a big talk to the hand moment.

But the main beef the author of this piece seems to have with Tucker is that he has interviewed people he doesn't like. That should be the job of journalists.

The irony here is that if Tucker had given the exact same interview and said the exact same things in 2012 that the FNM would love him.

And as a point to consider, it is not that Russia has become a wonderful place overnight, though there are small improvements, is that urban America has become the kind of shithole we complained about in other countries a generation ago.

165 One of the defining parts of those fights and a big reason the vastly outnumbered and out trained citizens were able to beat back the British is because they used what were essentially guerrilla tactics. Hiding in the woods and shooting at the British who were marching in formation in their red coats.

Pissed the Brits off but that was a big talk to the hand moment.

The Colonials learned to fight like Indians. Add to that The Kentucky Long Rifle, with actual rifling in the barrel, for accurate shots. At one point, the British had called a parlay because the Rebels were shooting their officers with alarming frequency. The British thought that terribly unfair and wanted their officers to face random death on the battlefield like the average soldier and not specifically targeted. No agreement came from the parlay.

169 Biden promises to impose a tax on "unrealized gains." If your land or stock account has increased in value in the last year you would pay taxes on the unrealized gain. You have not sold the property; you do not have the income. It isn’t "real." Yet you will be taxed as if you had made the sale and received the income

And remember this ignores inflation which is running at around 10% (real rate).

So buy $1000 in stock and watch it go to $1100 with still the real purchasing power of $1000 but now you'll own the Junta $20 or $30 dollars for the mistake of investing your money...

171 Nice radial engine. It is.
The NSU/Mazda is a "rotary" engine. But there is another rotary, too -- WWI Rhone airplane engines are the oddest thing ever.
Propeller is attached to the block; crank and pistons are stationary, part of the plane. The whole mass of the motor rotates. They didn't even try to throttle them. On, or off.

When there were lots of surplus radials around, they were used for some stationary power applications. You can see them at antique tractor meets. They're better in free air, or driving a fan -- but the big drawback is how much oil they fling, and the shorter TBOH due to the big thermal differences. Loose as a goose cold, and the rings snug up as the engine heats up.

Just traveling around the globe through either Dubai or Doha and you realize that the US international airports are shitholes. That is the Great Entryway into the US from abroad and it sort of sets the expectations when they get into Gangland America where every blue city looks like WW2 Dresden or Beirut.

I've heard it's been redone back into a single mansion. But all the mansions in Newport have full time staff to keep them up. They have to because of the North Atlantic and just the immense size of the place. It's like owning a stone hotel with acres of land on the ocean because that's what it is.

Videogame sequel Kingdom Come II was announced today. I was a great game although very hard. You learned a lot about life in 14th century and it wasn't just all fighting. You haggled with merchants, went to church, gathered resources and crafted things etc.

235 Even worse, there are reports that the Israelis are marching into Haifa, despite Biden's order that they not do that.

Remember when Biden bragged about having the most comprehensive voter fraud schemes in place? When he hinted that Putin should invade Ukraine and when Iran should attack Israel directly? Those were covered up as slips, but they also were foreshadowing. When Biden bragged about knowing about the location of the Top Secret Presidential Bunker by telling everyone where it was?

When Biden talked about Haifa, that was foreshadowing of a false flag to be staged in Haifa.

Bank on it. It was brought up in a Briefing and he has fantasized about it since then and has no filters to keep secrets to himself.

The governments are bankrupt and illegals are going to start rioting soon over lack of being giving enough free shit while blacks will riot because their free shit is going to the illegals. Somebody has to pay. So who needs Mr. and Mrs. Middle Class? Just take everything from them. Their, businesses, their homes, their savings. 273 I'm hoping the XO and I will be able to avoid a lot of the new taxes. The day after Zero won the presidency, I talked the XO into cashing in every none ash financial instrument we owned. The only thing we have now are a checking account and an interest bearing savings account he can write three checks a month. We own absolutely nothing the Feds can make us pay accrued but not realized profit on. We sold the house and moved into an apartment. We owe nothing on any of the three vehicles -- A Subaru Croschek, A 20 year old Rogue, and a 2001 Suzuki Vitara. The Vitara really should be put out of its misery. We've been holding on to it simply because it's an SUV. The XO occasionally takes it for a drive to keep the battery charged. The Rogue goes back to my daughter when her oldest turns 16. All we'll have is the Subaru. Two creaking antiques don't need more than one vehicle. So, all-in-all, I think we're in not perfect, but a fairly safe spot.

Posted by: Pillage Idiot at April 18, 2024 10:24 PM (HlyYF)

aaakchually, MMT requires taxes to "destroy" wealth so that inflation is controlled.

an alternate plan, of course, is to create either rationing or shortages (or both) so there is nothing to do with the extra money other than put it in the bank or invest it. Under draconian taxation then they go where no taxes are taken, like in state bonds or the equivalent of "Liberty bonds" or Treasuries.

the fact that this collapsed the USSR through massive discontent, and then through hyper inflation when Gorbachev tried to open the soviet economy is llost on these idiots without history before the first gulf war.

I do the Potato Exercise
Begin by standing on a comfortable surface, where you have plenty of room at each side.
With a 5-lb potato bag in each hand, extend your arms straight out from your sides and hold them there as long as you can. Try to reach a full minute, and then relax. Each day you'll find that you can hold this position for just a bit longer. After a couple of weeks, move up to 10-lb potato bags. Then try 50-lb potato bags and then eventually try to get to where you can lift a 100-lb potato bag in each hand and hold your arms straight for more than a full minute. (I'm at this level.)After you feel confident at that level, put a potato in each bag.

386 Reason Jr. wants to become a mechanic. Mrs. Reason is apprehensive. Her 1st husband was a Diesel mechanic and a codependent flake who couldn't stay grounded and stable. I am trying to convince her those were character traits completely unrelated to his career.

I am still pushing Jr. to get a business degree along with whatever trade certification he wants. Learn the skills but also learn how to run a business so someday when your hands and back get creaky you can manage the shop and delegate the physically demanding stuff.

That C10 is gorgeous.

Mechanic-ing is a great trade. The big drawback is that nearly all of your clients come to you with a problem, and want to unload on you. And a subset of those are convinced you want to defraud them.

I would like to suggest auto upholstery. All cars have seats, and nearly all, if kept long enough, will need seat repairs. And the customers see that, and know that, so it's not such a hard sell. And some of your customers will be looking for show-quality custom interiors, and will pay the big bucks it takes to get them.

387 more... Sal Mercogliano, an academic and shipping expert, noted to Military.com on Wednesday that one of the Army Landing Craft Utility ships, the Wilson Wharf, seems to be stuck in Tenerife -- a small island that is part of the Canary Islands cluster off the west coast of Africa. Plus, the Army's Logistics Support Vessel General Frank S. Besson spent a week in the Azores before finally making it to the Navy's base at Souda Bay in Greece.

Mercogliano said such a long stay may indicate the ship had an engineering issue.

A retired Army chief warrant officer who has significant experience in the Army's watercraft community also told Military.com in an interview Wednesday that "if those boats don't have multiple major mechanical failures -- I mean 'dead in the water' mechanical failures -- I will be shocked."

"They're horrendously maintained. I've got videos of these things falling apart," the retired officer added.

I have a business degree. I think one of the biggest fallacies and one of the reasons we have an imbalance in our workforce is because we have too many business majors and not enough of skilled craftsmen.

I took a year off from college after my sophomore year and worked and then worked 30 hours my last 2 years. Biggest lesson I learned is that learning how to run a business without knowing how a business really runs is stupid.

By all means encourage him to take a couple accounting and other relevant courses but learning a trade in an industry he loves is far more important. Learning how to run a business is easier than learning what make a business.

398 Saw a reference upstream to the oft-repeated thesis that during the Revolution, American use of guerrilla warfare tactics gave them a huge advantage over the British tactic of fighting in ranks and files.

There's little doubt that guerrilla actions were effective against the Redcoats, but contrary to the view that even the NPS was regurgitating years ago, all the major battles of the American Revolution featured the eighteenth-century European model of firing by ranks, then files, with the aim of creating a wall of death at the enemy, who was attempting to do the same.

In fact, it was the difficulty of mastering these methods of making war that put America at a significant disadvantage early in the Revolutionary War. That's one of the reasons why Baron von Steuben (who was certainly not a baron and likely never held a rank above that of a NCO) was so valuable to the Continental Army - he was able to get the principles of European drill across to the troops.

His ship has been "pinned" in Baltimore Harbor since the bridge collapse, as it was in for repairs at the time.

The ship? Is Sixty Five Years old. I suspect most of her "structural integrity" consists of layers of paint and rust.

Historical Fact. The Queen Mary (the one docked at Long Beach). One of her funnels (smokestacks) is a modern reproduction, fabricated and welded-in, on site.

Her original stack Really Was standing ONLY because of the multiple layers of paint and rust. A paper thin layer of steel at the core, was all that remained.

Before Copernicus went to Rome to develop and posthumously release his theory on planetary motion, he was asked by his archbishop why all the good Polish pennies were going out of circulation, while all the German pennies that were debased with lead were in circulation everywhere in Poland.
He determined it was because everyone knew the pure pennies had more value than the debased ones, and since the face value was what was counted, everyone spent those and kept the Polish pennies in a sock under the mattress.
I am not sure what they did with this information, I suspect the Polish mints started debasing their pennies to match the german ones.
However, that is Gresham's law in a nutshell.

Tucker did what no other western journalist wanted to do, and everyone is dumping on him or not doing enough. Tucker stated ahead of time he was not doing it to get that scorching interview, but to get AN interview, to give a point of view that has not been heard except as being described as an aberrant and absolute lie.

412 To beat a foe like the British, whose drill and fire discipline allowed an individual soldier to get off three shots in a minute under most conditions, not to mention the Hessians (mercenaries, but closer to what Philip of Macedon did in terms of how they were brought into another country's service), you had to train to match them.

By 1777 onwards, there was more or less a working doctrine of war for the Continental Army (and the varied State militias that sometimes fought in concert with them) that differed little from that dominated battlefields in Europe and would continue to do so into the early decades of the nineteenth century.

Individual commanders showed a learning curve, so that, for example at the Battle of Cowpens, Daniel Morgan positioned state militia troops, who had a reputation for retreating before British fire, in a central position, keeping selected sharp-shooters and veteran Continental troops more to the flank and rear.
The Royal Army also knew the tendency of militia to retreat and panic, and when they saw the first signs of just that, they advanced rapidly ... into a double envelopement.

426 To put it another way, Morgan and other Continental Army commanders had mastered enough of the British way of war that they were able to use it against them, even to the point of taking advantage of the Royal Army's contempt for colonials who broke under fire and exploiting that to demolish the Redcoats.

Obviously other factors played into American victory, not least the direct support of the French and the indirect efforts by the Dutch and the Spanish, and that's only the beginning of accounting for one of the most significant triumphs in world history. Yes, there were Americans who employed guerrilla tactics, snipers as well as skirmishers had their place, but it all comes down to the fact that the U.S. soldier could and did match his Royal Army counterpart on his own terms, the lethal, close-range, coordinated volleys by rank and file.

That they did, and quite well too! There's been some surprising accuracy in films about eighteenth century warfare over the last few decades. One day, maybe some director will feature the staff that NCOs carried in European forces up to the 1730s-1740s that were long enough that they could press almost an entire rank of troops forward, to ensure that they maintained formation and didn't break and run.

It would be great as well to see the real "fog of war" that gunpowder weapons created, where commanders had to take suicidally forward positions to be able to direct their forces. Washington was especially known for this, and the fact that he had horses shot out from under him and his uniform riddled with bullets but never suffered a scratch is one of the miracles of all time.

This prompted me to read up a bit on the history of Copernicus, Galileo and on to Kepler, and figuring out the motions of the solar system.

One article got me to thinking. Knowing what we know, you tend to laugh and ask "how could they have been so dumb" and not see what was right before their faces. Well, it pointed it, "seeing what is before your face" depends on Newton, and other things since. They didn't exist then.

So, we'd all have been likely as "dumb" as they were.

459 Yesterday JJ had a link to a NASA article under Science. This is an excerpt from it.
What the heck is a transmasculine?

NASA has a team that will update everything for the lunatic’s “current genders, names and pronouns” (which may or may not change on a biweekly basis) and then deploy a “workplace gender transition plan” that is only a little less complicated than the original moon landings.

“When I first came out, I did not come out as nonbinary at work. I wasn’t sure that people would accept that, so I came out as transmasculine and am only recently being completely authentic about it, like, ‘Actually, I’m nonbinary, and my pronouns are they/them,’” Mars “research scientist” Silas J. Ralston explains in a special NASA feature.

466 But, that's exactly what happened at the battle of Lexington and Concord.
Posted by: JackStraw

Lexington was a face-off between colonial militia led by a veteran of the French and Indian War against the marching column of Redcoats moving from Boston to Concord. By all accounts, the Minutemen were arrayed in something close to the rank and file formation that was the norm of the day, and the larger Royal Army force broke their column and formed ranks. (The intent of the Minutemen is unclear - they may have intended their formation as a demonstration of resolve, or as a way to buy time for Concord to secure their armament, or both.) Then that mysterious shot rang out, and the Brits opened fire. There were a few return shots from the Minutemen, but they dispersed as the British moved forward with bayonets.

Concord was a different matter. The forces there had time to prepare, and what ensued was a combination of urban warfare and conventional eighteenth century tactics that flung the defeated British into a hurried retreat. They were sniped at and attacked on the way back to Boston, where guerrilla tactics did come into display, but the battle had effectively ended by then.

476 I have to laugh a bit. When we talk of guerrilla tactics, we were a bunch of farmers or sailors or businessmen with only some having French and Indian War experience (which was not traditional European rank-and-file style fighting anyway) now up against the best army in the world where standing in rank and firing volleys was the order of war of the day, against soldiers who could fire three volleys in a minute. I'd do some guerrilla tactics, myself, under those circumstances.

This is where any comparison to the Vietnam War ends. Yes, the VC were guerrillas, but they were well-supplied and supported. Our army, not so much, as Washington's correspondence attests. Yet it was our traditional Army, more battle-hardened and organized, which won in the end, not the guerrilla tactics.

It would be interesting to get a breakdown of the demonstrators, firstly how many are actually not students; secondly what school (Arts, STEM, etc.); thirdly what actual majors.
My personal experience as an undergrad in South Africa in the turbulent 60s was that the BA, BEd and BCom students had time to demonstrate while the Science and Engineering students were too busy with serious classes and labs every day to be able to afford taking time to cause trouble.

Then you understand that the skirmish at Lexington and the battle that developed so poorly for the British at Concord (a vicious struggle in which Redcoats, in torching an outstructure that had once held weapons, formed bucket brigades to put out those houses that caught fire as an indirect result of their action) began and concluded in conventional (per 18th century military doctrine) forms of combat.

The tactics of irregular warfare make their appearance on the doomed British retreat back to Boston, and these harrying guerrilla tactics put the fleeing Redcoats into disarray, ultimately requiring another British force to rush out of Boston to secure their flanks and retreat into the city right before the militia forces sealed them inside. Had the irregulars (guerrillas) organized their attacks more efficiently, they could have greatly reduced the strength of the Lobsterbacks, maybe even fixing them in place where they could have been swarmed and several of them taken (permanently) out of service. As it was, though, the Royal Army marched double-quick base to their secured base, and the guerrillas only sped them up.

490 John Galvin, a noted USAR General and a veteran of some of the most nasty adventures we had in East Asia, used his interest from having grown up in the country surrounding Lexington and Concord and a natural gift for historical research and writing to produce one of the best volumes on the subject The Minutemen: The First Fight: Myths and Realities of the American Revolution (2006). It's a masterful treatise on the creation and organization of the Minutemen and other allied colonial militia and how they were deployed in actions against Indians and other opponents, culminating in Lexington and Concord. He, along with Charles Shy, A People Numerous and Armed: Reflections on the Military Struggle for American Independence (1990) and Arnold Bemtom Rourtellot, Lexington and Concord: The Beginning of the War of the American Revolution (2000) are all brilliant summaries of the events in question that combine extensive research with compelling insights that provide a synthesis of all that we've been able to verify about those two pivotal days of April 18/19, 1775,

Dig hard enough, and there's a video of a chopped, H-D style motorcycle, with a small-enough, 7 cyl, Russian radial engine facing "face forward" into the wind, driving a transmission and BMW shaft final drive to the rear wheel.

As I posted earlier, the Sherman Tank was powered by a Radial Aircraft derived engine.

There's no reason the C-10 won't run, other than completion. And, every Deuce n' a Half 6x6, and most Cement Mixers, have upward facing differentials, feeding from a bevel gear, from the driveshaft, above.

The C-10 can be engineered to completion. One poster mentioned cooling, and that'll be the biggest challenge to success.
