Saturday Overnight Open Thread (4/20/24)

The Saturday Night Joke

An old hillbilly farmer had a wife who nagged him unmercifully. From morning till night (and sometimes later), she was always complaining about something. The only time he got any relief was when he was out plowing with his old mule. He tried to plow a lot.

One day, when he was out plowing, his wife brought him lunch in the field. He drove the old mule into the shade, sat down on a stump, and began to eat his lunch. Immediately, his wife began haranguing him again. Complain, nag, nag; it just went on and on. All of a sudden, the old mule lashed out with both hind feet; caught her smack in the back of the head. Killed her dead on the spot.

At the funeral several days later, the minister noticed something rather odd. When a woman mourner would approach the old farmer, he would listen for a minute, then nod his head in agreement; but when a man mourner approached him, he would listen for a minute, then shake his head in disagreement. This was so consistent, the minister decided to ask the old farmer about it.

Following the funeral, the clergyman approached the elderly farmer and inquired why he nodded in accord with the women but consistently shook his head in disagreement with the men.

The old farmer said: "Well, the women would come up and say something about how nice my wife looked, or how pretty her dress was, so I'd nod my head in agreement."

"And what about the men?" the minister asked.

"They wanted to know if the mule was for sale." (H/T Hadrian the Seventh)

28 I have most of The Allman Brothers albums on CD now. I had bought a box set (remember those) years ago while stationed in the UK. Followed there careers at varous stages. Somewhere in there you will find a Dickey Betts duet with Don Johnson. It was done before Johnson's acting career took off. Late 70s-early 80s sometime.

One year I planted a bunch of carrot seed in a new garden site, and then spent time carefully thinning them back, more and more and more, and eventually figured out that I was caring for four rows of Queen Anne's Lace and probably pulled out all the little carrot seedlings.

One of the stores I go to has two grades of beef. I can't remember what is on the USDA stickers, but the sticker for the higher quality grade is silvery. The higher quality beef is quite a bit more expensive than the lower quality beef. If I decide I want a steak, it's worth the extra money to get the better one.

I've got a 3HP compressor motor, single phase, CSCR (capacitor start, capacitor run). It blew the time delay fuse on start.

Long story, I've got two compressors, in tandem (it's fun to try to sync pressure switches. You can do it where they'll come on at the same time, but not cut off at the same pressure. At then, at one ambient temperature. :-) I thought about rigging something with one switch to turn both on, but too much candy for a nickel, safety wise stuff).

Anyway, sucker came on, then turned off. Next start attempt, it blew the time delay. I replaced that fuse with one I had left. Promptly blew it. And on the same side.

I'm just arm chair debugging. Got my cheap meter. No short to ground, and winding resistance seems normal. I'm thinking a capacitor or centrifugal switch problem. There was a slight chirp, mechanical sounding last few times I heard it run.

They don't make this exact motor any more, I see. I'd replaced it many moons ago, a Dayton from Grainger. They don't make this model any more.

I was looking at new motor prices and nearly had a heart attack. Also, the damned federal efficiency regulations are ridiculous, and the "light duty compressor motors" they do have look like cheap shit that will give all sorts of trouble.

Spend a grand for a heavy duty motor for that class, and then the frame size would be a problem. So, I'm gonna fix this one, if I can.

Do you have a multimeter with a capacitance function? Take the capacitors out, and see if they measure close to nominal value. Within 20% should be OK.

If the start cap and run cap are the same, try swapping them, and see what happens.

First thing I'll do is see what the motor does no load. Will it try to turn then without the compressor starting load (and yes, the compressor pump turns freely by hand, no problem there).

Such a motor will try to start, no load, and may even do it with just the run capacitor working. That chirping sound makes me think there may be a fault with the centrifugal switch, maybe shorting something out.

That switch opens up the start capacitor once the motors gets to a certain RPM.

Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at April 21, 2024 12:09 AM (w6EFb)

232 >> If the start cap and run cap are the same, try swapping them, and see what happens.

On this class of motor, the start and run capacitors are very different. The run capacitor leaves the start winding in the circuit, but with low current. It improves efficiency and stuff.

The start capacitor is much larger, and lets much more current flow for starting torque in the start winding (you've got to induce a phase shift for a single phase to have starting torque).

The start capacitors are short term, electrolytic designs. Large capacitance, but they can't stand continuous operation without overheating.

Speaking of bench grinder, reminds me of something funny. Somebody mounted a bench grinder upside down. The motor would overheat. Turn it right side up, run just fine. WTF?

Elementary my Dear Watson. "Split phase" design (low starting torque requirement, resistance in the start winding circuit induces enough phase shift for a start).

Start winding was cut in by a current relay, but one that needed gravity to drop out. Inrush current through main winding pulled that relay closed, energizing start winding. When current reduced, it would drop out, but needed gravity to pull it down.

Upside down, start winding engaged all the time.

Basically capacity. Neighbor had an old one, a twin of the one we had (goes way back with Daddy and me as young 'un). I fixed that old one, and run 'em both together.

I've got these little air tools, a cut-off tool and a die grinder. The CFM on those is pretty good. Also a little sand blaster, which will bog one down alone. Two can keep up with all that.

Again, this is just me, nostalgia and keeping old shit running, like My Daddy, rest his soul, taught me. :-)

Most dangerous in the U.S. is a bit of a stretch, but living down here in central Mississippi, we tend to get a lot more coverage of Memphis and its woes than anyone but Tennessee itself and part of eastern Arkansas, and I can tell you, it has gotten pretty bad up that way.

The surge in violent crime in Memphis and the surrounding suburbs like Germantown and Colliersville has its roots back in the late Nineties. Since that time, there's nary a week where something horrific isn't going down up there, to the point where the Mayor recently hosted a "gang summit" to try to tamp things down a bit. Which (surprise!) didn't work.

246 The irony here is that in the seventies, Memphis, especially downtown Memphis, could have given any urban dystopia a run for its money. Beale Street, today's tourist mecca, was hooker and heroin central, in a way that rivaled NYC's Time Square, on a reduced level. The Eighties saw a renewal effort and some concentrated gentrification in downtown Memphis, and there was some real progress made. There was the boondoggle of the Memphis Pyramid, which the city never quite got over, but beyond that it's hard to say what went wrong.

Just that it did, and I wouldn't advise anybody to let their guard down while in the River City, not even around Graceland. About the safest place in town is the Airport, and a lot of that had to do with it being the pre-eminent Fed-Ex hub.

Memphis could use him, and if he could extend his advice to the situation developing in Jackson, Mississippi it would be a godsend. The JPD used to be fairly on top of things, but that, sadly, is no more. The Mayor, Chokwe Antar Lumumba, is striving to fulfill his pledge to make Jackson "the most radical city on the planet," which apparently means depriving the city and surrounding Hinds County of sanitation for half a year, among other things. He'll apparently allow the sanitation crisis to resume because the waste disposal company providing him with kickbacks didn't get the new contract. That parts of the city have become "no-go" zones and that the city and county water systems are still so polluted that most residents drink bottled water are apparently not on his radar.

These are Type T dual-element time delay Edison base plug fuses in a safety switch. (My father's original wiring, which I preserved for this compressor, even when I put three phase in the shop).

Now, first blown fuse was the time-delay element that blew. Second blown fuse was the *instantaneous* trip element that blew.

The time delay element is a little "solder pot" with a pin with a spring. Solder gets hot and melts, spring pulls pin out, breaks circuit.

The instantaneous trip element is a normal fusible link, although bigger than a normal one for the same current rating. So, "heap big" current blows it immediately, but some overcurrent delays blowing.

So, apparently compressor was running, something happened and it started drawing overcurrent and blew that fuse.

Upon trying to start, it blew the immediate trip element.

They would be working on something, designing something, and it didn't work. Dr. Zabel wanted to "armchair" it. Rather than taking it apart, looking at things, measuring things and see what we went wrong, he wanted to deduce what was wrong purely by the symptoms. Indeed! And namesake it is - his father was born Edwin Taliaferro, and decided while in college to change his name to Chokwe, after an Angolan tribal people, and Lumumba after ole Patrice himself. Lumumba Sr.'s many claims to fame included defending Tupac's father, Assata Shakur and serving as one of the main architects of the Republic of New Afrika, which sought to transform the Southeastern US into an all-black break-away nation.

That evening, I was fortunate enough to have dinner with the physicist and two or three others. During the course of the meal, the physicist said an interesting thing. I wouldn't disagree - thankfully, while there are still some die-hard supporters, the movement really lost steam for lack of black supporters. They weren't thrilled by the idea of a black separatist project, seeing a link with similar white supremacy movements in the same vein.

I still wonder how the "K" worked itself into the name, because the only people in Africa who would spell it that way also speak Afrikaans as their primary language, and I don't see the Boers as being role-models for what Chokwe and others had in mind.

Heaviside named most of these, IIRC. Heaviside did not like "capacitance". He wanted to use "permittance". That did not take. It did take in "permittivity", as in epsilon-naught.

Anyway, the order of things, mostly due to Heaviside:

Resistance, inverse conductance.
Reactance, inverse susceptance.
Impedance, inverse admittance.

Reactance is the imaginary part in the AC model of that. Impedance is the whole thing, real and imaginary.

This is just a mathematical model of the phase shifts and all that.

Had to look this up to get it right. They are related in a sense. Susceptibility is a dimensionless constant, that gives the polarization constant for a dielectric material. A dielectric material increases the capacitance of a given configuration above what vacuum would give.

Susceptibility is denoted by "chi", or "X" in ASCII. The relative dielectric constant is thus 1 + X.

Susceptance is inverse reactance, and includes inductance as well. So, sort of the same, but different.

What everyone knows as Maxwell's Equations today, should be called Maxwell-Heaviside. Heaviside is responsible for the modern, nice vector form they are known today. Maxwell's original formulation was a bunch of partial differential expressions of each components, and he dabbled with a quaternion form.

The slickest form of Maxwell is the 4-vector, relativistic formalism. There rather than two fields, electric and magnetic, you have one tensor, a field tensor, an antisymmetric tensor with zero diagonals. The EM field becomes one thing, a rank two tensor.

It was 1963. Truman said this:

But it got out of hand. The fella ... the one that was in the White House after me never paid any attention to it, and it got out of hand. Why, they've got an organization over there in Virginia now that is practically the equal of the Pentagon in many ways. And I think I've told you, one Pentagon is one too many.

Now, as nearly as I can make out, those fellows in the CIA don't just report on wars and the like, they go out and make their own, and there's nobody to keep track of what they're up to. They spend billions of dollars on stirring up trouble so they'll have something to report on. They've become ... it's become a government all of its own and all secret. They don't have to account to anybody.

318 Truman, 1963, continued:

That's a very dangerous thing in a democratic society, and it's got to be put a stop to. The people have got a right to know what those birds are up to. And if I was back in the White House, people would know. You see, the way a free government works, there's got to be a housecleaning every now and again, and I don't care what branch of the government is involved. Somebody has to keep an eye on things.

And when you can't do any housecleaning because everything that goes on is a damn secret, why, then we're on our way to something the Founding Fathers didn't have in mind. Secrecy and a free, democratic government don't mix. And if what happened at the Bay of Pigs doesn't prove that, I don't know what does. You have got to keep an eye on the military at all times, and it doesn't matter whether it's the birds in the Pentagon or the birds in the CIA.

I just looked that up. Too much ammonia in the blood. The lactulose helps with that somehow.

I remember that lactulose stuff. After I had my hip replaced, thanks the this damned rheumatoid arthritis (well, a hip injury degradation was accelerated by the RA), I got really constipated, thanks to the pain medicine, oxycodone, and maybe something else (anaesthetic, type that without looking it up).

Anyway, they prescribed lactulose to clear that up. Boy, howdy. That gets the "gut flora" in overdrive.

I experienced something I'll call "power farting"....

325 Jackson was fairly safe during the period my wife's grandfather was one of the Deputy Chiefs - he bridged a lot of racial gaps and fought for full inclusion of all black members of the JPD. I'm a bit biased, obviously, but he was a great guy, and a fantastic grandfather to my wife and sister-in-law when they were small.

His only failing was that he was the worst shot in all creation. When he came onto the JPD range for certification or just to practice, everybody else left the field. But, irony of all ironies, the one time he needed to use his service weapon, he came through. The man had literally risen through the ranks to the command level as a Deputy Chief, and if he caught a call, he didn't let those stars on his shoulder stop him from responding.

There was a drugstore robbery taking place, and he rushed in, weapon drawn at the ready. The perp saw him and immediately fired. The bullet struck my wife's grandfather in the wrist, but that didn't stop him from returning fire and taking the criminal down center mass. 1/

326 Hey, publius. Thanks for reply.

Yeah, ammonia forms in the gut, a by-product of digestion (particularly proteins) and lactulose speeds things along so that the ammonia isn't --or is less so-- absorbed into the bloodstream.

At any rate, too much ammonia causes a dementia-like state. Hubby becomes irrational, bossy, difficult... ugh.

Now, re "power farting" due to this lactulose shit. Lactulose is a disaccharide, which is indigestible to humans. It goes right through to the colon. But the gut bacteria in that colon love that shit. They go to town on it, and in metabolizing it, the produce all manner of gas byproduct.

What this does to the gut has the benefit of pulling excess ammonia out of the blood stream, BTW, which has to do with what JQ was talking about above.

Anyway, I remember taking that stuff. It cleaned me out quick. But then....it kept going. I had the sensation I was going to shit myself something awful.

So just went in and sat on the terlet. The gaseous erruptions were someting I cannot possibly describe. I mean, I was thrusting myself off the terlet seat.

330 Yes, publius. And that is *why* hubby is refusing to take it!

What he doesn't 'get' (or just doesn't give a damn about?) is that, when he doesn't get enough of it, he becomes loopy and unmanageable.

332 The perp survived, but was paralyzed from the waist down for life. My wife's grandfather only suffered mild nerve and bone damage that largely cleared up after a year or so. Until the robber died, he would visit him in prison at least once a year to check on his well-being. Heck of a guy, the Chief.

The joke that immediately made its way around the JPD and most of the people we knew was that the Chief was only able to make the shot because the perp had hit him in the wrist, and that helped him aim straight for the one and only time in his life. They still talk about the guy at the JPD Academy and it's rare I've met a veteran LEO anywhere in Mississippi who didn't love and respect the guy. 2/fin

That lactulose did the trick of relieve my constipation. Lactulose truly = "Colon Blow".

I think all it took was just one packet, one dose of that stuff, and I was all cleaned out and back to normal.

After that, my poor sphincter. Well, it was like Barky Obama after a night at the bathhouse. Wrecked, it was.

It's just the order of things, I think.

I remember my father's literal shitstorms there at the last.

I mean, I was a baby once, couldn't control myself. And the circle became complete.

Funny story about one of Daddy's late-stage shitstorms. It was after he broke his hip, that's when his decline, mentally, really started. He was very proud, and couldn't abide with the loss of dignity of personal bodily functions. It was hell....

Anyway, he made a mess all over the bathroom floor. I mean a real mess. I cleaned it up. He still had the presence of mind to be embarrassed about it. He said something about "Well, I had to clean up you when you messed yo' diapers....".

My mother heard that, and got a look on her face. A real mad look. She came up and whispered in my ear, "He didn't change one diaper of yours! That was all me!"

345 Right, publius!

And a baby doesn't produce anywhere NEAR the quantity of sh!t, that an adult will....

I cannot count the number of trousers and rugs I've had to throw away.

349 Thanks, publius.

My "sanity" has been hanging by a fine thread for about a year now. Don't know how much longer I can take it.
