Wednesday Morning Rant

"Consultants"

That's what they often call themselves, anyway. Traditionally, consultants are third parties who come into a company to help solve a problem by bringing their expertise to bear. It's a mixed bag to say the least and the idea of outside consultants has its fans and detractors, with the latter often outnumbering the former. It is more complicated than ever because alongside the traditional consultancy market, a new breed has emerged.

Well, a very old breed, just with a new name. Next to the traditional consultancies - efficacy notwithstanding - are the undisguised ideological gangsters. These new-school consultancy firms aren't there to help their clients' businesses, aren't there to provide technical or regulatory expertise and aren't there to deliver accurate information. They exist to enforce ideological conformity under threat of destruction.

One type of these gangster consultants operates against the target directly. They act as ideological cops, muscle their way into organizations, then start wreaking havoc. This variety started making headlines recently in the games business, after gamers started to notice and discuss their corrosive effects on the product. The most famous of this variety at the moment is Sweet Baby. Inc. out of Canada.

Sweet Baby bullies games developers to wokify their games, and one way it gets through the door is by threatening the development companies with Twitter armies descending on them with woke backlash. Several years ago, the boss of Sweet Baby put it pretty bluntly to its ideological allies in the games companies: terrify your bosses into hiring us:

This is a direct "nice shop you have here, it would be a shame if something happened to it" mafia tactic. It's a protection racket. "Pay me or I'll wreck up the joint and scare off your customers" is what the mob does, not a business. And the mob, at least, won't break your windows if you pay. These guys break your windows anyway and claim that it's to allow more customers to come in.

The other type of gangster consultancy operates against the target indirectly, by poisoning the target's business customers/partners. They get other companies to punish the target. This variety is the "research" firm. They don't provide strategy or direct recommendations, they provide "information" about with whom it is safe - that is Party-approved - for you to do business. This is the professional services equivalent of the "fact checking" racket. A recent example of this is an outfit called DoubleVerify.

DoubleVerify provides "brand safety" data to companies. "Brand safety" is an attempt to quantify whether advertisements appear near content that the advertiser wants. A brand may want their ad to show up near posts about cars, for example, but not near posts containing pornography. DoubleVerify provides data about ad placement to advertisers. This seems reasonable on its face, until you get to the problem: the company was "inaccurate" about ad placements on X/Twitter - and only on X. They showed X as having low scores for "brand safety" despite the platform actually having very high scores, and this resulted in their customers pulling ads from X and suspending ad campaigns there. DoubleVerify claims it was a mistake and has now been corrected, but this "mistake" was active for months. A mistake of this magnitude in their core product can mean only that they are incompetent, that they were lying, or both. There is not an innocent explanation.

The consultant mafias make navigating consultancies quite difficult for businesses. If a company thinks it needs a consultant for strategy or technical expertise, how does it pick one that is real and avoid accidentally hiring an ideological gangster? If a company needs data about product performance or market conditions, how does it choose a data service that provides real information rather ideologically-conforming disinformation?

The consultant industry was already plagued with problems of inconsistent results or outright incompetence, but an industry or product doesn't have to be broadly reputable or beloved to be strapped down to the altar of Woke sacrifice.

True SMEs are often valuable in technical fields. I've even been one myself, so that might color my opinion of it.

But "you must have SMEs X, Y and Z no matter what" rules often make little sense. "This guy really knows his shit, so talk to him before you potentially blow up the system" often does.

If he actually knows his shit, of course.

Lack of vision, usually. I've seen it happen numerous times.

The division is failing to hit its numbers and the GM of the division can't figure out what if anything to cut, what if anything to buy or implement to improve efficiency, how or if to reorganize, etc. His job is in the line if he doesn't hit those numbers, so he'll fire 3-4 people to free up budget and then spend the money bringing in consultants to "assess the business and provide recommendations."

71 ME became the 17th state to ratify the National Interstate Popular Vote Compact this week. That makes 209 electoral votes. It takes 270 to go into effect.

MI is actively considering it right now. Last night, the DEMs recaptured the MI House via 2 special elections. DEMs now have the trifecta in MI again-- the governor & both branches of the legislature. MI would make it 224 in favor.

This horror show flies beneath the radar. The public is mostly unaware of it, I suspect.

It would be a serious mistake to think this thing is unconstitutional, so therefore... not to worry. If it goes into effect, the courts are likely to uphold it, because the states are given great latitude as to how they choose their electors.

So, no more Electoral College. As CA and NY go, so goes the nation.

Justin's new budget from yesterday:
The federal government is increasing capital gains taxes on wealthy individuals and companies, leaning on an affluent segment of the population to finance billions in new spending on housing and other government priorities.

The federal budget, released Tuesday, increases the inclusion rate on some capital gains. Businesses will now pay income tax on two-thirds of their capital gains earnings, up from one half. The increase will also apply to individuals, but only on capital gains earnings over $250,000.

The tax measure is expected to net the government $19.3-billion over the next five years – $8.8-billion from individuals and $10.5-billion from companies – in a bid to offset roughly $53-billion in new spending. It’s by far the largest revenue measure in the budget and the first change to capital gains taxes in a quarter-century.

Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland described the measure as an attempt to lean against “structural inequality” and raise funds from wealthy individuals that could be funnelled toward middle class and younger Canadians

111 71 ME became the 17th state to ratify the National Interstate Popular Vote Compact this week.

I did know one man who, whenever someone under him took a vacation, tried to spend one day working that person's desk. That would help. But you cannot go that far down; not enough time.

A friend told me the only useful advice he'd seen from a consultant was that, if you interview several people for a position, you should hire the one you like least.

The National Vote Compact is dead letter until they get enough states signed up to be a majority. It's in all of the passed individual bills.

And, as time goes on, the biggest signers are losing electoral power as they lose population.

This, of course, requires that you 1) know the people in your industry; and 2) have a reputation as an excellent place to work at.

Supposedly they came in to help the company, usually with poor cash flow, with product delivery. However the "Company" managers had no practical experience with delivery or customer service and didn't care, they were all about the numbers. They could manipulate numbers better than Professor Harold Hill.

They could interpret negative or neutral cash flow as a positive on the books and mesmerize the owner into believing it. The business would slowly bleed to death.

Yes and no. I tend to agree that the target is a soft target in that woke cancer has already metastasized at the target and makes it prone to bouts of woke harakiri already.

But the threat of social media blowback is a real threat to be taken seriously. It's not a gaggle of SM incels ranting on SM per se, but the chance (likelihood?) that such an effort turns into larger cancellation. Even huge game developers need access to sales channels, promotion, banks and financing, etc. All of that can be targeted and, as we've seen, they have spines made of limp-wristed homosexual noodles.

Oy. Okay. From the article:
The heavy rains that caused widespread flooding across the desert nation stemmed partly from cloud seeding. The UAE started cloud seeding operations in 2002 to address water security issues, even though the lack of drainage in many areas can trigger flooding.

Cloud seeding is unreliable and expensive. It's extremely unlikely that cloud seeding caused a 100-year storm (or whatever this one was).

And then it will turn out that these forums and the screen names are "known to law enforcement" and they have done nothing, which will raise further questions about why, and will also raise questions about why some forums are suppressed by the state and others are not.

"Maintain the presence of mind to throw a chair at him while he reloads" would go a long way.

I am astounded by how many of these incidents involve multiple reloads in confined spaces. The reload is the opportunity. Throw a desk at him and dive for cover. Low risk. If it connects, it opens more opportunity.

Yea, that was my point above. I think what's in the manifesto goes beyond the usual rantings. I think it directly implicates others and that's why they are fighting so hard to keep it hidden. It may be as simple as "I hate X and Y for pushing this tranny bullshit on me, now I'm a mutant and miserable, and want the world to burn. I can start by murdering people."

Posted by: Elric Blade at April 17, 2024 12:10 PM (iFTx/)

289 There must be something seriously bad in that manifesto given the superhuman efforts to keep it hidden. What could it be? It can't just be that "I'm a tranny and hate normals and I'm insane." We already know that. I think it must be something that expressly implicates state actors in the creation, preparation, or instigation for the murders.
