Israel vs. Iran [Diogenes]

There was an interesting story in the news the other day following the Iranian attack on Israel, discussing how "surprised and disappointed" the Iranians, Syrians, Yemenis, and their assorted allies in Hamas and Houthis and Hezbollah were. The attack failed and failed spectacularly. And this is being studied in places such as Washington DC, Moscow, Seoul, Tokyo, Beijing, etc., Just how did Israel pull off such an incredible defense? All know of the Iron Dome over Jerusalem and much of Israel. During the attack on Oct 7, when thousands of missiles and artillery rounds were fired, the Dome mostly did its job and while people were surprised, and pleased, it wasn't exactly unexpected. It has worked before. But the Iranian attack was a three-pronged event using slower drones, faster cruise missiles, and intermediate-range ballistic missiles. This was different, not just in who was attacking, but the methodology. The success of the defense has got a lot of people thinking and planning and, frankly, worried.

Being over 29, I can recall back in my youth the days of East vs West...The Soviet Union and Warsaw Pact vs the United States and NATO. Berlin and Europe were divided. Each side had enough nukes to destroy each other several times over. Fortunately, to date the nukes have not been used. There are a lot of reasons for this, but a primary one is called Mutually Assured Destruction, commonly known as MAD. This was the subject of jokes and derision by comics and lefties for years, and yet MAD works. MAD says that you cannot achieve a successful first strike because one side cannot kill enough of the other before they strike back. Simple. So, in a the bi-polar global war scenario, this was stabilizing, and accepted by each side.

The creation of the Anti-Ballistic Missile systems (ABMs) resulted in a series of negotiations, because this was destabilized the MAD doctrine. A viable ABM system allows one side to defeat a first strike, then free it to launch a strike of their own-- and win. So both sides agreed to stop building and limited themselves to one system. The US put its ABM system around some of the missile fields; the Russians put theirs around Moscow.

Now let's consider a Regional Conflict. Over time nuclear weapons have proliferated. Pakistan, India, China, France, and Great Britian have nukes, and likely others such as South Korea, Japan, Taiwan, South Africa (maybe), and presumably, Israel. In the bipolar years, nobody gave much thought to Regional Conflicts. Why? Regional powers didn't have nukes, so why bother. But not anymore. This begs the question then -- and the reason a lot of thinkers are busy late into the night -- can a Regional Nuclear War be fought, and won?

We know now that something on the order of 300 vehicles were launched at Israel of which about 120 were ballistic missiles. Only five of these made it to Israel. The rest were shot down or experienced launch failures or crashed enroute. All the drones and cruise missiles were destroyed. Israel claims that they destroyed 99% of the attacking systems. So the math mostly tracks. The success was due to a layered defense including aircraft from Israel, the US, France, Britian, and Jordan in air defense mode (oh...and the Navy).

Israel's Ballistic Missile Defense system, the Iron Dome is centered on the Arrow 3 (also developed by the US) an exo-atmosphere intercept missile; the Arrow 2 which engages targets in the upper atmosphere (actual altitudes are classified); and for lower level targets (artillery, drones, rockets and missiles that got past the Arrow 2) they use David's Sling. (Gotta love that name!) Iron Dome and the air forces gave Israel a significant defense in depth. Formidable.

So with this background the question today is, is there a regional first strike option in play in the Middle East? Do Israel's enemies have a first strike capability? My opinion? No. Given the Iron Dome defense, the only system that can get through are ballistic missiles and even then, it is a very low probability. It would take hundreds of missiles and warheads (that they don't have) and given a 99% probability of failure, that would be the classic nuking yourself in the foot.

Now, does Israel have a first strike capability? Short answer is, again in my opinion? Yes, assuming they have nukes. The political and international ramifications aside, they could eliminate Iran, or any hostile neighbor easily. Will they do it? Probably not, but it clearly remains an option.

What does it mean for the greater world? In the bi-polar world of the Cold War (East vs West), MAD was stabilizing, and anti-missile systems would upset this stability. But in a non-bi-polar world, where nukes have proliferated, things are more unstable. Ironically (and this is the funny part), a missile defense system is a way to stabilize things. If Regional Country X knows its attack will fail, because it will lose 99% of his missiles, then it won't attack, especially if the warhead falls on its own head, or an ally.

Crazy world huh?

This logic is also a reason the Poles and Czechs were angry at Obama for cancelling the Theater Missile Defense system going into Europe.

Can MAD exist in a regional context? I think it can, but the likelihood of weapon use in oneies and twoies goes up dramatically. More so given there are other delivery options: trains, cars, airlines, etc. Better question is can MAD exist in the Middle East? Just how crazy are the muzzies? This would keep me awake at night.

Now let's flip it. Would it help if Iran had its own Iron Dome? It would certainly help the Iranians, but even with Russian support, they are years away from developing one...and in enough quantity to cover the country. (Hint: Iran is big!)

Lastly, how do you differentiate a “regional” anti-missile system from a “strategic” one? And this is at the heart of international concerns now.

Some interesting days ahead!

That is a possibility I've considered. Was this just a test of Israel's response capability? And Iran's attack capability? Was it *meant* to degrade Israel's defenses so that Iran can launch a more significant strike later?

"MAD" doesn't make sense in this context. The Mullahs in Iran *want* to be destroyed because they believe it will usher in a new Islamic age where chaos reigns supreme. The Israelis do NOT want to destroy Iran because they value life (though they value Israeli lives more than Iranian ones, of course).

It's a very weird situation going on in the Middle East right now...

52 A tempting target suite in Iran might be their oil and gas infrastructure. Especially in the northern part of the Gulf. There are huge terminals for tankers, storage tanks, pipelines, etc. that are probably within reach of the IDF (with tanker support.) A successful strike might cripple Iran's ability to sell oil and gas to fund their terror activities... assuming the US doesn't gift them more pallets of cash.

Getting to those would be "difficult" as Jorden would have to approve overflights.

However Israel does have a sliver of territory on the Gulf of Aqaba, which leads into the Persian Gulf proper.

There are ways to simulate a strike using some game software that might be interesting.

Impressive!

Reminds me of back when Hugh Hewitt was still tolerable, and he always asked a series of history questions when hosting a journalist to suss out how deep their knowledge was. Never heard one *not* fail spectacularly.

I ask my journalist guests a few standard questions when they first appear on the show. I almost always ask about Alger Hiss because the answer provides a baseline as to the journalist’s grasp of both modern American political history and to a crucial fault-line through it.

I also ask if they have read some basic texts on the war on terror, the most important of which is The Looming Tower by the New Yorker’s Lawrence Wright. It is almost journalistic malpractice to opine on any aspect of the West’s conflict with Islamist radicalism without having read Wright’s work, which won the Pulitzer Prize and which is the standard text. I’ll run through a few less well-known titles . . help signal to [listeners] whether the guest is worth listening to. . .

It's hard to get a handle on the numbers...the combined air forces (and yes, Naval Air) did account for all the drones downed outside Israel, which was essentially all of them. The ballistics were the kicker and the key to the idea of MAD in a regional sense.

Also...noting other comments so far, there is one school of thought that after the events of Oct 7, and now this, the Iranians are trying to drain the Israeli's Iron Dome munitions. They probably spent a Billion bucks worth defending against the attack...they cannot keep doing that.

67 How's the bird situation?

The wife and I were sitting in our sunroom this morning. It has a big Jap maple right outside the window, and when I glanced up, I noticed a robin frantically flapping its wings as if it was stuck. I went out and found that it had an old nylon string wrapped around its neck, and tangled in the tree. He was literally being hanged.

I cut the string, and pulled it out of his feathers, but he just laid there gasping. There isn't much you can do at that stage but wait and see. Fortunately, he was standing after about an hour, and has now flown away.

I feel good.

72 “How dreadful are the curses which Mohammedanism lays on its votaries! Besides the fanatical frenzy, which is as dangerous in a man as hydrophobia in a dog, there is this fearful fatalistic apathy. The effects are apparent in many countries. Improvident habits, slovenly systems of agriculture, sluggish methods of commerce, and insecurity of property exist wherever the followers of the Prophet rule or live. A degraded sensualism deprives this life of its grace and refinement; the next of its dignity and sanctity. The fact that in Mohammedan law every woman must belong to some man as his absolute property – either as a child, a wife, or a concubine – must delay the final extinction of slavery until the faith of Islam has ceased to be a great power among men.

74 In the bipolar years, nobody gave much thought to Regional Conflicts. Why? Regional powers didn't have nukes, so why bother. But not anymore.
++++
There's also been a profound shift in strategic basis for assessment.

In the bipolar world, the question was not "what is the capability" but "what is the willingness?" That the US or the USSR could blow up the world was never in question. The scale of capability was known, at least approximately. The diplomats and spies could simply focus on gaming probability that either would actually do it.

This has changed, and the Cold War approach to nuclear assessments no longer applies. With a country like Iran, the question is inverted. The willingness to use atomic weapons can be taken for granted. If they have them, they *will* use them, and probably not all that long after acquiring them. The diplomatic and intelligence question is no longer about assessing willingness, but about assessing - accurately - capability.

That's what fills me with trepidation about this recent strike. What if Iran already has them, and is debugging delivery systems and testing defenses?

78 Part II:

Thousands become the brave and loyal soldiers of the faith: all know how to die but the influence of the religion paralyses the social development of those who follow it. No stronger retrograde force exists in the world.

Far from being moribund, Mohammedanism is a militant and proselytizing faith. It has already spread throughout Central Africa, raising fearless warriors at every step; and were it not that Christianity is sheltered in the strong arms of science, the science against which it had vainly struggled, the civilisation of modern Europe might fall, as fell the civilisation of ancient Rome.”

Good point and we (in the public) do not know the actual numbers. One estimate had 40-50% of the missiles failing. If I had to swag a % for failures I'd pull 30% out of my butt.. I would think that Iran's proxies taking huge casualties from Israel's IDF would begin to wonder why. Even this strike by Iran was very sterile. Did nothing to stop Israel from continuing ot wipe out Hamas and Hezbollah. At some point, the proxies are going to run out of munitions.
My guess is that the strike against Iran will take out munitions factories and military bases setting the stage for the Iranian people to take matters into their own hands.

121 Now let's flip it. Would it help if Iran had its own Iron Dome? It would certainly help the Iranians, but even with Russian support, they are years away from developing one...and in enough quantity to cover the country. (Hint: Iran is big!)
++++
Iran will likely never get something similar, at least not in a reasonable (strategically relevant) time period.

They don't have the technical base, and neither do Red China (who isn't interested) or Russia (who might be interested). The abandonment of Israel by the United States will likely be a false prize for Iran. When Israel realigns - and she will, because she is too small to exist without protection from a broader empire, despite being tough as nails - it will reduce Iran's odds of being able to acquire such a system. If she goes to China, China will be less inclined than ever to back Iran, doubling down on favoring the Arabs particularly with Israeli influence and the very big carrot of major missile technology. I suspect the same applies to Russia, who would back off of Iran support in favor of Israeli technical expertise and technology sharing.

Which leaves Iran only with us. The new Israel.

Even with a much smaller country and less people, Israel can afford that amount of money better than Iran. Even with US help. All nations are noticing US actions and the weak US dollar. This spending will accelerate the US's inability to matter in foreign affairs.

In addition, the wider population of Iran is not with the mullahs. They are further down the road the US is now traveling.

So subornation and subversion will, and has, worked better for Israel than Iran.

Cautionary note: A deep state outpost inside the Israeli government can lead to Israel's extinction.

What's most telling to me is not only the lineup of first responders, it's the reaction speed and coordination of the reaction participants. Diogenes can, if he so choses, run a time sequence from the first detection to deployment, but the entire defensive operation of this could only take place after A LOT of exercises, diplomatic agreements, security arrangements, intelligence gathering, and a solid table of organization. Months, if not years of work.

Whatever Iran learned, it certainly wasn't comforting.

140 Good point and we (in the public) do not know the actual numbers. One estimate had 40-50% of the missiles failing. If I had to swag a % for failures I'd pull 30% out of my butt.. But not because the missiles are necessarily bad (Iran has a ton of missile warfare experiences albeit dated) but because I suspect the missile crews are poorly trained.

Posted by: Diogenes at April 18, 2024 11:25 AM

I would put the numbers at about what we saw in Iraq during Desert Storm/Shield. Iraq had about a 25-30% launch failure rate back then and Iran is most likely experiencing the same because for the most part they are using the same technology.

149 They don't have the technical base, and neither do Red China (who isn't interested) or Russia (who might be interested).

Nukes are an exorbitant cost center, which is why most technically capable countries don't have them (or didn't). Maintaining an atomic arsenal is a monumentally expensive pain in the ass, and that PITA was entirely optional because of those "dreadnoughts" in the US and USSR.

Neither country's fleet of "dreadnoughts" can be trusted anymore, and many countries are probably strongly considering building - or already built - their own doomsday weapons as a result. The use will probably not be for a first strike, but for brutal retaliation.

That second part is the real key. Once a nation has nukes, the entire calculus on how it is handled changes. If Russia didn't have nukes, or Ukraine did....things would probably be playing out very differently over there. A similar situation (Iraq invading Kuwait) is a good example...if Iraq had nukes, we may have tread much more carefully. I think the Arab/Muslim world got much more cooperative with the Israelis because they are believed to have nukes, and the will to deliver them, and less so because the Israelis have decisively won every prior conventional engagement.

170 Given the end of both the meta-stable bipolar system of competing US and USSR empires, and the end of the post-USSR "Pax Americana," proliferation is only going to grow, and it makes perfect sense for it to grow. The end of the bipolar stability and the failure of the US to provide security - with more failures, coming more often and no end in sight - any country with a survival instinct and an industrial base is either going to get nukes or already has them and is shutting up about it (I suspect Japan and Korea are in this category).

The start of all this was Biden's shutting down the oil and gas industry in the US. It allowed Russia to go to war in Ukraine. It is allowing Iran to reclaim billions in order to continue it's oil exports. It's allowed the rise of Venezuela. All this is not ideological but economic. Israel's huge oil find changes the dynamic dramatically so Iran needs to shut it down. Turkey is complicit. Helped shut down an Israeli pipeline to Europe. Now Turkey is entertaining Haniyah. Turkey is also not worling in the West's best interests.

I think they told us so we could engage in some political face-saving by shooting some of the stuff down because there's a delicate dance going on at the moment and Iran was apparently confident (and apparently rightly) that we wouldn't tell the Israelis.

But given that they told us, I doubt this was supposed to be a major start to a bigger conflict. I think it was more about testing defenses and assessing capability.

Good point and I agree. Proliferation is inevitable. And I suspect...affordable for more than a few, should they go down that road.

Since Nukes work mostly as a deterrent, how does it make sense for a country to secretly have nukes? I suppose there is some use for a country to be coy about it (a la Israel), so that everyone else wonders "do they or don't they", but really, having nukes is much better strategically if everyone knows you have nukes.

That is a very good question. And theoretically, yes, it does, particularly in the light of Netanyahu's recent comments about how Israel will do whatever it has to to survive. I would like to think it won't get that far, Others will step in to balance things, and/or Iran isn't that bright.

The only first strike that could be effective could only be nuclear, and I don't think they want to go there. Look at the recent experience with Hamas - even after bombing day and night for 4 months, Hamas was still firing missiles at Israel. Also, Hamas ended up having 2 - 3 times as many missiles hidden away than the IDF had projected.

Coyness is for small countries. Bombast is for big countries.

Having "this country can nuke my ass if I move" in the "maybe" column creates a lot of strategic challenges. A firm "yes" or "no" is easier to deal with.

For a small country with big, powerful enemies, ambiguity can be very helpful.

Israel is not close enough to stage long range airstrikes without US support, and permission of the Saudi's to do a flyover (which they may not give) A reminder - the US officially estimated in 2022 that Iran has over 3,000 ballistic missiles in its arsenal - they only used 115 older ones in their "attack". A full strike by Iran would totally overload defenses and probably destroy most of Tel Aviv. Now, Iran doesn't do that because of Israel's nuclear deterrent, but we shouldn't forget that those missiles are there.

351 Israel's smartest move would be just to destroy Iran's economy especially its oil industry.

It would hurt all of their enemies from Iran to Joe Biden...
Posted by: 18-1 at April 18, 2024 12:07 PM (ibTVg)

That is actually easier to do than anyone wished to admit. Kharg Island. Almost all of Iran's petroleum exports of all kinds are processed and shipped out of Kharg Island, a huge petrochemical facility.

So why is it unlikely Israel will touch it? Because that would not just hurt Iran, it would also destroy Europe and China's economies as well, and their collapse would probably collapse the US economy as well. That's the jenga block that could bring it all down.

Trump Media in an update to a FAQ on its website provided tips to shareholders on how to avoid their stock being loaned out for short selling.
The tips come as the share price of DJT has plunged since March 26, when the company that owns the Truth Social app began being publicly traded.
Trump Media’s biggest shareholder is Donald Trump, the former president who is set to receive the Republican presidential nomination this summer.

373 One side thought: It would absolutely be in the best interests of those involved in the defense against Iran's attack to willfully obfuscate who and which systems shot down what, in order to preserve uncertainty about capabilities. 382 how does it make sense for a country to secretly have nukes? I suppose there is some use for a country to be coy about it (a la Israel), so that everyone else wonders "do they or don't they", but really, having nukes is much better strategically if everyone knows you have nukes.

396 The start of all this was Biden's shutting down the oil and gas industry in the US.

I have read elsewhere the Iranians broadcasted their intentions for the attack, and actually were in the Swiss embassy detailing when and where and what was coming. The Swiss handle our diplomatic relations in Iran. So we knew well ahead of time. This was a face saving measure, and social media post attack bears this out with misrepresented photos to show the Iranian population how glorious the mullahs were doing against the Jewish dogs of Little Satan.
