Gun Thread: Tax Day Eve Edition!

041424 tax day image scaled.jpg

Howdy, Y'all! Welcome to the wondrously fabulous Gun Thread! As always, I want to thank all of our regulars for being here week in and week out, and also offer a bigly Gun Thread welcome to any newcomers who may be joining us tonight. Howdy and thank you for stopping by! I hope you find our wacky conversation on the subject of guns 'n shooting both enjoyable and informative. You are always welcome to lurk in the shadows of shame, but I'd like to invite you to jump into the conversation, say howdy, and tell us what kind of shooting you like to do!

Holy Form 1040 Shitballs! How in the ever-loving hell did it get to be Tax Day Eve? Are you a last minute filer frantically adding receipts and filling out forms with a stubby little pencil? Just in case you're wondering, Weasel are not a fan of taxes in general and the stupid clown show we're paying for, in particular. I am perfectly capable of wasting my own money and really don't need the gummint's help in that regard, thank you very much.

Special Administrative Note
Remember to mark your calendars for the afternoon of Saturday, June 8th if you care to attend the cultural and social event of the season, the 2024 NoVAMoMe. That's right guys and gals, our pal bluebell has gently reminded me with the tip of a shiv that I need to get busy and set up the registration page, so expect an email link on the main page left sidebar to go live this coming week. Anyone who has attended this gala event will tell you it's a lot of fun! There are fabulous prizes, fabulous food, fabulous drinks, and a bigly fabulous opportunity to spend time with your fabulous online pals. An informal get together Friday evening will be held again this year, so pencil that in too!

With that, step into the dojo and let's get to the gun stuff below, shall we?

******

Fundamentals
With all the NoVaMoMe excitement, you thought I'd forgotten about fundamentals, didn't you?

041424 sight alignment scaled.jpg

Ok, so we've gone over stance and grip and you have been practicing at home in front of a mirror and on the range where you have been taking notes on what works, what doesn't work, and what looks good for the range babes. Most importantly, you are focusing on the elements of good fundamentals as you practice and develop muscle memory. Now let's take a look at sight alignment. To start things off, here is an NRA article on sight picture.

Now let's go to the video!

Guns of the Horde

First up, a Bigly Gun Thread congratulations to our pal and delightful 'ette Screaming in Digital on the recent acquisition of this beautiful Smith & Wesson Model 28!

041424 sid 28 1 scaled.jpg

041424 sid 28 2 scaled.jpg

Here is my latest, long-desired acquisition, a S&W model 28-2 "Highway Patrolman" bought from Gunbroker on my first-ever bidding attempt! (That part was easy - turns out I was the only bidder!)

Most of you know the backstory to this purchase, but if you don't - Jesse had a model 28-3 with a 6-inch barrel. It was special not only because it is beautiful and easy to shoot well, but it was the first gun he bought new for himself, in 1986. The model 28-3 now resides with J's son, and rightly so. But I loved it so much I had to find a similar one for myself. My stepson and I have promised to shoot them side-by-side next time we see each other.

Last Saturday I took it to the range with a small supply of .38 Special and .357 Magnum. My first 6 shots went exactly where I wanted them to go. I neglected to photograph that target, as I thought I could replicate my success, but alas... I had a little bittersweet moment, lost focus and the next rounds started drifting a little high. It was happy with the cheap .38 I had; one of my cheap .357 rounds didn't go bang on the first try, so future trips may experiment with different ammo.

It will be tempting to shoot this on every range outing, but it is nice and special enough that it will be an occasional shooter for me. The Highway Patrolman is expected to make a limited appearance at the TX MoMe.

Wishing you many years of happy shooting, SiD!

Choosing a Carry Gun

Our pals at Gun Tests offer this article on the 5 Best 9mm Pistols for Concealed Carry in 2024, which fits in nicely with SEH gal's series on the same topic in the Gun Basics 101 section, below.

Lots of great content and resources at Gun Tests, so you might want to consider a membership.

CBD and Weirdness

041424 question head scaled.jpg

Our pal CBD is not only an art critic and good cooker but also a gun nut who recently posed the following question:

So...during the winter I carry a Kimber 1911 Commander (cocked and locked). When I re-holster, I put my thumb between the hammer and the frame, because...uh...I have no idea. But it makes sense to me that I block the hammer from falling during one of the most risky times of my gun handling.

And it got me thinking...what other things do people do in the name of safety that aren't accepted, taught techniques? Besides wearing a turnip on their belts.

Well now that's a good question! What do all y'all think, or rather what sort of perhaps unconventional stuff are you doing safety-wise?

Cigar of the Week

041424 rhomb brick house scaled.jpg

This week our pal rhomboid scores again with this excellent review of the Brick House Habano Classic

J.C. Newman is one of the few legacy American cigar companies still around. Hope to visit their historic HQ and rolling rooms in Tampa at some point (most of their production is outside the US). One of their stand-bys sticks is Brick House. I reviewed the maduro version here in the past (liked it). There's also a connecticut in the line.

The original Brick House habano version - now dubbed the "Classic" - is a nice medium-brown stick with clean lines and appearance. Ecuador habano wrapper, Nicaraguan binder and filler. I've tried both the toro and robusto sizes. They produce very good smoke volume, and the draw is easy. Solid medium, as far as strength. Flavors for me are just general pleasant tobacco notes, and overall it's quite smooth. A solid basic cigar that is good for any occasion and goes for $6 and up online.

Excellent as always, thank you rhomboid!

******

Here are some different online cigar vendors. You will find they not only carry different brands and different lines from those brands, but also varying selections of vitolas (sizes/shapes) of given lines. It's good to have options, especially if you're looking for a specific cigar.

Cigarsinternational.com
Cigarpage.com
Famous-smoke.com
Cigarsdaily.com
Neptunecigar.com
Smallbatchcigar.com
Bobalu Cigar Company

Nicks Cigar World New!

A note about sources. The brick & mortar/online divide exists with cigars, as with guns, and most consumer products, with respect to price. As with guns - since both are "persecuted industries", basically - I make a conscious effort to source at least some of my cigars from my local store(s). It's a small thing, but the brick & mortar segment for both guns and tobacco are precious, and worth supporting where you can. And if you're lucky enough to have a good cigar store/lounge available, they're often a good social event with many dangerous people of the sort who own scary gunz, or read smart military blogs like this one. -rhomboid

Anyone have others to include? Perhaps a small local roller who makes a cigar you like? Send me your recommendation and a link to the site!

22 "Next week, trigger pull/squeeze/press/pinch/press/actuation!"

Thank goodness. Went to the range to work on fundamentals as advised by Weasel-san. I'm still a new shooter and still working to learn my new gub.

Good news - feeling comfortable. Reasonably consistent. Groupings reasonably close. ("Reasonably" is doing a lot of work here.) Getting a few shots on target.

Bad news - clusters are consistently hitting from the bulls-eye down to the lower left. I'm a right hand shot. The interwebs tell me this is from jerking the trigger or pulling the trigger to the left. I tried to work on this but not sure what I'm doing wrong. Feels like a good straight pull to the rear, but either it really isn't or I have some other hitch somewhere.

29 Congrats on the S&W 28, SiD. It's a beauty. It's a mystery why some guns on auction sites get attention and others don't. I've gotten a couple of good deals on what I would have thought were desirable guns and been gobsmacked at what some others go for.

Re: the actual content (see, I do read skim it), I happened across a Youtube video a few weeks ago with Rob Leatham titled "Why Aiming is Useless." As you probably guessed, the title is clickbait. His point was that aiming is useless unless and until you are able to pull the trigger without moving the rest of the gun off target. Which is a fair enough point I suppose.

30 No range report this week. (Or this year for that matter!)

Whenever I make it out to the farm, I have too many work projects that are overdue.

Did take a break Saturday to help my brother get set up for spring turkey season. The cell phone game camera just chimed at me, and there is a turkey that has wandered into the "harvest zone". Hopefully, the evening pattern will hold, and he can go out with my nephews this week and bag some tasty turkeys!

P.S. If anyone needs to monitor something too distant for the wifi range or direct wiring range of their house, the cell phone game cameras are a great addition to the tool box to catch trespassers, revenuers looking for your moonshine still, etc.

Posted by: RI Red at April 14, 2024 07:14 PM (ufoOV)

32 Range time you ask? Yes indeed, twice this week. And those fundamentals that Weasel keeps harping about? Well...I started with grip. Found out that doing it "correctly" may or may not work, but making an adjustment for my funky joints works far better. So, score that a win. Next up was sight lines, and by the end of today I determined what I was doing wrong, and believe it or not, those bullets were within those black circles - including the tiny red one! To say this is exciting is an understatement. This week's assignment is stance, which will probably take more than one session.

69 Watched the 1911 training video. Some comments:
- Note the use of tracer ammo by the trainees. I have never seen .45 ACP tracer ammo, ever.
- The revolver shown in the video looks like a Colt Official Police or Colt Commando (an Official Police w/ a Parkerized finish).
- Note the "teacup" two-handed grip method being taught.
- GI 1911 sights made the point shooting method taught to the trainees almost a necessity. The GI sights are difficult to use on the range. They're practically useless in low light conditions.

77 Here's a fundamental that we found we had to think about - finger placement on the trigger. Remembering to get the pad of the last joint on the trigger insted of weapping it all up and getting the trigger in the crease of the joint.

It actually made a difference.

Congrats SID! Such a nice revolver!

I remember seeing a WW2 training film one time on "Snap Shooting In The Jungle" with the Thompson. 80 Range Report!
Vortex Venom glass arrived, is mounted and is zeroed.
PMag Back Up Sights do not fit under it, so last week’s zeroing was a rabbit hole.
AR10 hates 150 grain, loves 168 and may be fond of 175 and 185.
Reloaded 168 from all my fire-formed brass and so far it’s a 1 MOA gun. I think I can do better.

83 @RI Red, hah, been there on the ammo front. I've a Howa in .243 Winchester that hates certain ammo. I had to give up a bunch of ammo for the rifle simply because it was useless in the gun, other than to make noise and maybe scare what I was shooting at.

Posted by: blake - semi lurker in marginal standing (tT6L1) at April 14, 2024 07:36 PM (tT6L1)

84 Another way to concentrate on fundamentals is dry firing - we have an iTarget and its getting a good bit of use in the house.

And its a lot cheaper that shooting real ammo.

Posted by: blaster at April 14, 2024 07:36 PM (IFNME)

85 A couple of weeks ago I asked about replacing a 1911 grip safety. I got the part yesterday and installed it today. The hardest part was removing the thumb safety. All the how-to videos say to pull and wiggle it and it will come out. I wiggled and pulled until my thumbs were raw. Finally found a vid showing a guy using a little plastic prybar. I don't have one of those but I do have some wooden framing shims and that did the trick. Now I have to take it back apart and trim a bit either from the bottom of the safety or the top of the mainspring housing. Probably the latter because that won't require messing with the thumb safety again.

94 I have mentioned several times.

I am about as American can be, but I live in Australia because my wife is Australian and I love her so she wins.

But the original plan was for her to move to America with me, and I told her straight up the first thing I will buy her when she moves to the states is a gun. I'm not from a great place, and I grew up rougher than I lived as an adult. I was not going to allow my wife to be weak. So I took her shopping for a gun, and though she hates guns, for a reason, I will not ever let her live without the great equalizer in the land of the free.

In Australia it's illegal to carry the 3" knife that I have carried for the last 30 fucking years. Australia is a snowglobe nation. They think they are great, when really they are isolated and kept in a tiny little bottle to make the populace safe until the brits want to wast their lives on random war actions.

Australia has no hero's.

101 Something that we don't include in our buy mantra enough - buy magazines, too. You need more of those than the 1, 2, or 3 that came with your gun.

I picked up a half dozen Amend2 P320 mags that were very reasonably priced in comparison to Sig OEM mags.

Also grateful pointed me to a place that is selling P320 Legion mags for half price - shipping was a little higher than I would have liked so I made that a little less painful by ordering a half dozen of those, too. Not sure that math pencils out, but, hey, no math.

If you've ever hefted a Thompson (especially the 1921 and 1928 models w/ foregrips), it's easy to understand why. If you bring a TSMG up to your shoulder, it's not a steady hold because the TSMG is so heavy and ill-balanced (even when unloaded). You'll get five rounds max on target before the recoil knocks your aim off center, due to the long drop built into the stock. The TSMG was designed to be fired from the hip at very close (bad breath) ranges. Tuck the stock between your elbow and body, and it'll get the job done at very close ranges.

And advice for those seeking a good carry gun - consider holster choices and mag availability/price as well. I mean the king of that is Glock but this does kind of restrict you to major brands. But logistics is important.

And certain ammo works better in certain guns.

I don't think it's ammo manufacturers' QA/QC (there is a significant difference between the likes of Red Army and Hornady) as there is between ammo types. Your cheap practice ammo probably won't get the same level of QA/QC put into it as defense or match ammo. That QA/QC work costs $$, and you'll pay the price for it w/ each round you buy.

Get A-Zoom snap caps. They're made of solid aluminum. They're significantly more expensive than the cheaper ones made of plastic, but they'll last a lot longer in a semi-auto pistol. Also, if you buy a pack of 9mm snap caps, you can use them in any 9mm firearm. You should get many years of use out of them before you have to buy replacements.

181 EdL and HB Guy, the Thompson was made in reaction to the French doctrine of walking fire using their Chauchat lmg that the US used to much lesser success in 30.06 compared to the original 8 mm Level for which the Chauchat was designed around.

Easier for the US to use 45 acp as it was already in the logistics system for the US due to the 1911 pistol.

The Garand was heavy enough to do the same thing in WW2 but it was a field expedient and not taught as doctrine.

That is one thing about that method. It only works for live fire because if you're dry firing, your brain knows there's not going to be any noise and recoil so it won't try to "protect" you from it.

Didn't the US get the opportunity to try out their version of "walking fire" with the BAR in the closing weeks of WWI? The TSMG prototypes never made over to France (as far as I know). The BAR was a much better firearm than the Chauchat, but six weeks (or less) wasn't much time to test and refine the doctrine. Especially since only a very few US units (36th Division, 4th Marine Brigade among them) ever got to use BARs in combat.

203 While we are gunsmithing by ESP, I have a budy with a TNW Aero Survival Rifle. It's a takedown rifle with a barrel that slides into the receiver and the barrel nut which is basically the heat shroud screws down.

Except his the barrel nut goes about 2/3 of the way, his barrel rattles.

There's a pin that sticks through the receiver that is a tension device for the ratchet on the barrel nut - he thinks that is protruding too far and keeping the barrel nut from bottoming out. Anyone have experience with this rifle?

242 Another range trip today. Mrs. Splunge came too, which is more occasional, and always a cause for celebration. She is catching fundamentals fever too, and wants to get better groups with that little Glock 43 of hers. She says I've really improved, which was music to my ears. Yay for weekly range visits.

I think I've almost entirely cut out flinching aka anticipating the boom (down and to the left). It was mindset and habituation more than anything else. In my mind now, the boom has become much less noticeable, and my finger movement on the trigger a very isolated thing, as though in my mind I can just see a disembodied finger, a trigger, and nothing but fog around.

The next frontier in bad habits is anticipation of recoil (shots hitting low). Seems to be another mental thing, not sure just what is the right trick for that one, but I'll figure it out eventually.

I guess I had better decide whether to order more ammo before the May price rise.

Thompson was a visionary, but he was either just too late for WWI or far too early for WWII. I've read that of the first 15,000 Model 1921 Thompsons made by Colt, sales were so slow that the last of these weapons weren't sold until 1940 when they went to the Brits, who were desperate for any SMG they could get.
Interestingly, the USMC obtained the first military Thompsons. But the USMC (always short of $$) didn't buy them. The Postal Service acquired 200 Thompsons to protect the mail when mail trains and post offices were robbed. Since the USMC got the job to protect the mail, the Post Office handed off the Thompsons to the USMC, who liked them and promptly took them into service.

256 SiD. I think I've got a set of Pachmyer Gripper Pros for the N frame, square butt. I'll dig down for 'em, and if found, bring 'em in October.

Most comfortable shooting grip on the revolver I've yet to find. Myriad physical reasons, too much to type. But, their magic is real, and works.

Personally, I shoot the 4" version better than the 6". Same in that I shoot a 1911 Commander, better than the standard Government Model. They just simply balance better, for me.

One of the Holy Grail of the N frame .357s, is the scarce 5" barrel on the Model 27, a favorite of legendary gun writer Skeeter Skelton, of 1970s gun-magazine (publications, not equipment) fame.

I bought my 4" bbl Model 28 in 1980. It has served me well. Alas, it's dying, not of old age, but by way of "flame cutting" the top strap, above the barrel cylinder gap.

Takes a whole lotta rounds to eat through the steel like that. Which is why it fires (mostly) only 148 gr. wadcutters, now. Low pressure, low stress loads. I'll keep shooting it for as long as it lets me.

They're looking to double production this year and ramp up production even further in 2025 and 2026. I think their goal 500,000 shells per year by the end of 2025. In the interim, expect ammo prices to continue going up. That artillery ammo getting used in Ukraine and Israel requires gunpowder to send the shell downrange, and it's got to come from somewhere.

We have become aware of another round or price increases from the ammo factories, and many popular items will be effected very soon. The Kinetic group (AKA Vista & the brands CCI, Speer, Federal and Remington) has announced a May 1st price increase on all handgun ammo, and they are the factory that leads the market up and down due to their massive production capacity and portfolio of iconic ammunition brands. Winchester just went up on 9mm and is expected to follow Federal on other calibers in May. Magtech / S&B have verbally stated they will follow Federal's lead and increase in a similar percentage, and Prvi Partizan announced verbally they are doing a 6% to 7% price increase coming in June. If you care about paying prices that are 7% more, now is the time to buy.

Thank you. Very helpful. Current events gub knowledge on the gub thread. How about that!

304 Yup, another great thread, Weasel. Although I may have just blabbed a lot.
I love this thread. Ace, please take notice for Weasel’s annual report.

306 Just got home from a tough church voters meeting. I didn't shoot this week. It's probably a good thing or I might have been tempted to use a couple of people for target practice tonight.

Thanks for the thread (in advance of me reading it), Weasel. And happy Sunday to everyone.

Add my thanks as well.
I've been pricing 9mm; but, haven't been reading my email.
Shame on me.

I'm glad it works for you.

313 Just checked Ammoseek for 9mm and the top two places with the best prices Rogers and Berelli are both companies I use. The price for Fiocci at $12.49/50 rds is the best price I have found.
Guess I need to order more.
I also bought a pair of electronic ear buds from Rogers this week. They shipped the day I ordered them. Ammo usually arrives in 48 hours.
Strange. My emails are almost all from gun places....

325 Thank you for letting me show off my new (to me) gub. I was in & out earlier, so I missed responding to some comments but I'm so glad my purchase is deemed Hordeworthy.

I am disappoint that I will miss NoVa, but TX is about 6 months away, if I can hold out that long.

327 Each time I watch any type shooting demo, I'm reminded of Jerry Miculek and wonder how on earth could you survive a hostile encounter with the man. Have to wonder if he's as humble and unassuming in real life.

That setup for the Fiat-Revelli MG is almost certainly for moving it around, especially since the Fiat-Revelli is a water-cooled MG. It weighs in at 37 pounds w/o any water, so it's not like a single soldier could carry it like an M60. If you look closely at the picture, you can see the MG's tripod is integrated into the frame of the bike. Given that the Italians squared off against the Austro-Hungarians in the Tirolian Mountains and the Isonzo River, the most mountainous frontline in WWI, anything that increased heavy weapons mobility for the Italians would have been quite welcome.

Thanks to the horde for the knowledge and giggles. I learned stuff (mostly to work on fundamentals and buy more ammo - also don't follow Italian soldiers riding bicycles). Cheers y'all!
