Quote II

“So you have two different standards. On the one hand, the full breadth of the First Amendment is deployed when we’re talking about criticism of Jews or Israel, but criticism of other groups is assessed under a different standard.” Lori Lowenthal Marcus

Quote III

"It is deeply simplistic to assert that the diversity of America can be reduced to any particular set of beliefs, and faulty reasoning to infer that identity is determinative of one's thoughts or political leanings." NPR president and CEO Katherine Maher

The Biden station-wagon family vacation must have been a hoot. "Don't do that!" said the respected elder. While the bastard child hissed back, "What are you going to do? Nothing, nada, zilch pops. Corn Pop boy."

Failed: Biden Tells Iran ‘Don’t’ Launch Attack on Israel Only Hours Before They Do It Anyway

To show just how much of a failure Joe Biden is on the international scene, he has twice told a nation not to launched an attack, yet BOTH times they did it, at least one time within hours after Biden issued his toothless warning.

Of course, we all know that the useless old man Biden warned Putin not to invade Ukraine.

Joe Biden has American blood on his hands. How much? Too much to wash off. NEVER FORGET: Joe Biden Gifted Iran with Over $80 Billion Since Entering the White House

In November 2023, the Joe Biden administration extended a sanctions waiver that allows Iran to collect another $10 billion in funds to assist the mullahs in funding their military operations in the region.

This comes one week after Iranian-backed Houthis attempted to shoot down a US drone in the region and one month after Iran-backed Hamas terrorists slaughtered 1,300 Jews in Israel and took another 240 Jews hostage.

It was the deadliest attack on Jews since World War II.

Would you buy a vibrator from this Genius Award Winner?

A Missouri man is facing a felony theft charge for allegedly swiping eight “luxury” vibrators from an adult toy store and then trying to fence them via Facebook Marketplace , according to court records.

Christopher Michael Booth, 34, was named yesterday in a felony complaint charging him with stealing the vibrators--valued at a combined $1539.20--from a Hustler Hollywood outlet in Berkeley, a St. Louis suburb.

The purloined sex toys, which retail for around $200 apiece, are manufactured by Lelo, a Swedish company that advertises itself as “one of the world’s leading designer brands for intimate lifestyle products.

Dunno about that but, our shop also did dry cleaning. The big money was in dry cleaning women's clothing. I forget exactly the prices, hell, it was 50 years ago, but depending on whether it was a man's jacket or a woman's, the price would be 2x the other. True for all other women's items too.

Same process, sameo everything. Except the prices.

It gets better - apparently the Biden Administration signed off on the Iranian strike.

Using Turkey as an intermediary, we apparently told Iran that a strike on Israel was acceptable, so long as the strike was not "too big".

And although this hasn't been reported yet, I'm sure that we assured the Iranians that we would keep Israel from retaliating, to the best of our abilities.

84 I'm very pleased that I came up with a quotable quote about OJ. Thank you for that, MisHum!

While the trial was going on, I was living in Sweden and teaching English as a native language. I went around to different schools and different age groups. My favorite was one with two 8-year-old boys, one from England and one from Eritrea.

They were fascinated by death in all its forms, and the black kid from Eritrea asked me if OJ was guilty. He thought that as an American, I would know. I explained that I really didn't know very much about the case. He then asked if OJ would be put before a firing squad if he was found guilty.

I said that as far as I know, they didn't have firing squads in America. It might be lethal injection.

I wrote it on the blackboard: "LETHAL INJECTION" and then I explained the meaning of each word and had them pronounce it a few times.

When we left, I didn't erase the board. Wonder what the teacher made of that the next morning.

There was a Big Thing with traffic cameras in Columbus, Ohio some years ago. It was going to improve traffic control, ticketing (revenue to you, peasant!), etc., etc.

Some investigative reporter got into it, and found that ACTUALLY there was a big payoff scam between the traffic camera vendors (think MONORAIL!) and some of the people in the city government. It went to court, and the city government was thoroughly embarrassed (in the end, it was actually quite comical) and removed all the traffic cameras, and they probably will never come back here, again.
But I hear that Gavin Grewsome, Dictator of Californicator, is all for them. Good luck, California Horde- mates. You will need it.

146 There was a time many years ago, that I would donate to PBS. Their dramas were well done. But now their main goal like most in the entertainment industry is identity politics. When they did Jane Austen's Sanditon, they inserted an African American woman into it, who was, get this, an heiress. It was the most ridiculous incident I've seen of pandering to the diversity crowd. I guess I should just be grateful that they didn't stick in a tranny character.

How did monkeys get to South America?

The standard argument is they evolved in Africa and their fossil record shows up around 30M years ago in South America - long after the Atlantic separated the continents. And yes apparently the current argument is they floated across on rafts. Monkeys. Crossing the ocean. On rafts.

IIRC, the current spreading rate on the mid-Atlantic ridge is about 2 cm per year. 30M years ago, the ocean would have been 600 km narrower. And rafts could simply be logjams and vegetation torn loose from river banks in a big flood.

Arrows, archery, and bowling balls. Reminds me of a story. Did you know that William Tell, the famous Swiss archer, was also a scratch bowler? Best in the entire league. So good in fact, that every season, the various cantons of Switzerland would make extravagant bids to get him on their bowling teams. Hundreds of years later, Ernest Hemingway wrote a story about it: "For Whom The Tell Bowls".

196 Jim, the term was Irish democracy, in that everyone talks, gets some sort of consensus and then wanders off to find someone they like better while doing what they want anyways.

Prior to the coming of the English the Irish had a more dispersed governance, based on community groupings. It was a typical situation where the leaders pissed off their constituency, who then would go do what they wanted, or find a new leader. IIRC, they also had an odd system of jurisprudence, where instead of choosing a lawyer you chose the judge and jurisdiction.

One of the things I noticed working with Mexican laborers was that it never mattered what they were agreeing to, if they didn't understand what was going on, or thought it was ill advised, it was not going to get done, no matter what your style of leadership was. It became important to figure out what they thought was going on for this reason.

The best explanation is that chunks of mangrove swamp or matted vegetation patches detached from estuaries, like those muskeg islands in lakes in Canada that can float around and block marinas. There had to have been enough vegetation for the monkeys to survive on during a passage.
It seems that there were more than one species that crossed and there may have been more than one period though. Also, Cavimorphs (ancestors to capybara and chinchilla) appear to have rafted across as well 40 million years ago from genetic "timing", This matches the probable period of rafting monkeys as well.

233 NPR is amusing. When it gets labeled a government lackey because it gets Fed funding, it is quick to point out that it's only a tiny amount, 1-5% of its budget. However the moment there is a chance that Congress might rescind that line item then it's tears and on-their-knees pleas 'we have to have that funding'! Heck they've fired scores of people for 5% drop in income.

except, as I understand it, the lineage of monkeys and primates is fairly well established in Africa and Europe, and any attempt to claim that the American monkeys were from before plate tectonics separated the African and South American continents (so they walked there instead of rafting) requires claiming that primates existed back in the cretaceous, and is supported by no findings of any fossils at all.

the idea of rafting monkeys used to be considered crackpot territory, and in fact was an argument used to deny that continents moved and split at all, but nothing else matches the time, fossils found and the fact that there are south american monkeys. It is a headache.

259 Monkeys traveled to South America on that great African sailing ship, the WeGoNow. These Africans had learned how to make electricity, but not lightbulbs. They kept sticking monkey tails in the sockets, in order to light up deepest, darkest Africa. The monkeys rebelled, stealing the fully provisioned ship.

When they reached South America, they were going too fast, and finally came to a stop about a mile from the nearest water. They didn’t see any light sockets there, so they stayed.

262 >> (I don't know what is the flyby all about)

Anomalous acceleration of spacecraft doing close flyby gravitational assist maneuvers, usually by Earth. (There are some clever techniques they use, to save fuel at the expense of time.

Some of these can get pretty fancy. See the MESSENGER Mercury probe.

There was a similar acceleration anomaly, called the Pioneer anomaly. The Pioneer probe was decelerating faster than expected. A mundane explanation was finally found (anisotropic thermal radiation).

There will likely be such a similar mundane explanation of the flyby anomaly. The anomalous acceleration is very small, on the order of mm/s compared to velocities of km/s. That is the spacecraft's velocity differs from expected after the maneuver by a few mm/s.

1. Saturday's Iranian attack on Israel was widely telegraphed and explicitly anticipated in US major news outlets days in advance, with a steady drumbeat of “attack imminent.”
2. The Iranian military generally has good OPSEC, other than this past week.
3. The Iranian attack on Israel was almost wholly ineffectual, with zero Israeli casualties and minor property damage.
4. The Biden Administration is urging Israel to call this a “victory” and not retaliate.
5. Coincidentally, the House of Representatives is trying to vote this week on a controversial aid package for Ukraine and Israel.
6. Joe Biden and his son Hunter made $millions$ from Ukrainian companies operating in Ukraine, the world’s money laundering capital.

These are facts, none of which are in dispute. What do they tell you?

I've wondered if there were intermediate dieoffs during the cretaceous - maybe certain areas of the shallow sea got cut off and stagnated. I say this because I sometimes fossil hunt along the banks of the Trinity in Ft Worth, where it cuts through a cretaceous chalk. You can see many distinct layers in that chalk, some only 2' wide, and you can follow them along the river bank. In most of them, fossils are rare, but there's one layer that is just about paved with ammonite fossils, I can always find more than I can carry if I run into it. I always wonder how so many ended up on the bottom when that was being formed.

287 There will likely be such a similar mundane explanation of the flyby anomaly. The anomalous acceleration is very small, on the order of mm/s compared to velocities of km/s. That is the spacecraft's velocity differs from expected after the maneuver by a few mm/s.

Just spitballin' here, but...
The earth isn't a sphere, but flattened at the poles. That has to have an effect on the gravitational field. It might be enough to account for a couple of ppm discrepancy.

That one is a stretch, especially since the Eocene was warmer than it is today. I think the first permanent ice sheets in Antarctica were in the upper Eocene, and that was due to separation of South American and Antarctic continental plates

I do wonder if there was an ice bridge between Antarctica and South America during the upper and lower Dryas glaciations, though.

295 >> That has to have an effect on the gravitational field. It might be enough to account for a couple of ppm discrepancy.

That's one of the explanations. The model of the earth's gravitational field in terms of the multipole moments (deviations from spherical) is pretty complex. But some paper claims even that wasn't enough, and a much more complex model explains things perfectly.

Other mundane explanations are timing errors in the signal receiving networks.

Exotic explanations are "new physics".

303 You can see many distinct layers in that chalk, some only 2' wide, and you can follow them along the river bank. In most of them, fossils are rare, but there's one layer that is just about paved with ammonite fossils, I can always find more than I can carry if I run into it. I always wonder how so many ended up on the bottom when that was being formed.
Posted by: Tom Servo at April 15, 2024 12:28 AM (S6gqv)

I expect that conditions were ideal for ammonites during certain periods, and they flourished in great numbers. In the Bearspaw Formation in Alberta, which exists under my house, at some depth, there are many ammonites. Also mososaur fossils. And ammonites are often found with holes punched in their shells by mososaur teeth. There are some indications that mososaurs would rear their young in sheltered bays or lagoons, and the adults would venture out, catch some ammonites, and bring them back to feed their young, resulting in middens of toothmarked shells. To this day, birds engage in similar behavior. Fascinating stuff. I have handled ammonite shells with toothmarks on them.

355 well, you have three choices, the American primates floated across the Atlantic, walked across the Atlantic or evolved on site from when their ancestors arrived there before there was an Atlantic.
Your facts are that there are no fossils, that there are no corresponding monkeys in Africa that are similar, and that there are giant carnosaur fossils in South America that predate the monkeys in question by about 66 million years.
It is my opinion that your argument that it is not a valid argument that " all primates originated in Africa and then went yachting" is a straw-man argument only.

against this you have cavimorphs (a branch of rodents) who do have genetics and fossils similar to African species appearing at the same time in South America, and the fact that the oldest fossils of the ancestors of American monkeys consist of teeth since that appears to be the only parts that fossilized in what was then a rain forest which can cut either way.

I am interested in your argument that the American monkeys are a completely different line from African monkeys, is this borne out by any research in fossil records or just by visual matching of current species?

The standard argument is they evolved in Africa and their fossil record shows up around 30M years ago in South America - long after the Atlantic separated the continents. And yes apparently the current argument is they floated across on rafts. Monkeys. Crossing the ocean. On rafts.

Another example of "anomalies" pointing to new physics that turned out to be nothing by error. Remember in 2011, CERN published some anomalous results that seemed to indicated faster than light neutrinos?

Well. Turned out to be a loose fiber optic cable, that reduced the computed time of flight of calculation. This was was offset somewhat by another error in some oscillator, a high precision clock, which was ticking a bit too fast.

They all had egg on their faces. It wasn't really bad, really. They said, basically, "This looks like faster than light, but we know that's a big deal, so all y'all check this out carefully".

The loose cable vs the fast clock is an example of tow systemic errors nearly cancelling each other out. Either one alone would've been obvious. They would've known something wasn't right. But both of them together nearly cancelled and made the calibrations look good.

But the difference was enough to make them think their neutrinos were travelling faster than light.

You're kind of making my argument for me. Let's assume that monkeys did in fact years ago go yachting and then stopped for some reason, did they take rats as first mates? Does that seem likely? Even if they did I bet they would have eaten them before they got more than a couple days offshore.

Or is it more likely that as we know that that the continents were originally attached as Pangea and that is how life migrated between what are now distant continents? This is not a wild eyed conspiracy theory but very well established fact backed up by decades of research, fossils and other evidence. That seems much more likely and obvious to me. Primates didn't exist at all until after Pangaea broke apart. As a geologist, I don't find the idea of monkeys serendipitously rafting across a narrow ocean on a floating island of vegetation to be all that challenging. Monkeys are arboreal, as we all know. So a troop of monkeys is in a stand of trees on the bank of the Congo River. The bank gives way, and a mess of trees topple over, monkeys and all. But the trees remain afloat, and the monkeys stay in them, because swimming is not an option. Over the course of several months, many of the monkeys die, but eventually the floating debris washes up on the beach in Brazil.

Nonsense. They came from the same host because they all existed on the same continent. There were natural differences just as there are in humans but the genesis was from the same source.

Look at the dinosaurs. T-Rex is very similar to but in many ways different from its South American relative Gigantasaurus. Do you think that guy swam to North America and mutated or was there some environmental modification to the evolution of both? Evolution happened similarly but with differences because it all came from the same source that was altered by different environments as the continents separated which again is not conjecture but fact.

What requires a suspension of disbelief is that all life sprang from Africa and went yachting.

He departed this mortal coil on Dec. 9, 1948.

It ends as follows:
"As neighbors and friends were returning from the cemetery, Mr. T. H. McGee joined the widow to express his sympathy. 'It is a great loss,' he murmured. 'Yes,' she agreed absently, 'but it is fully covered by insurance'."

Robert Quillen's full Name is give in Wiki as

Verni Robert Quillen.

In other place, such as that obit, it's given as "Robert Vern Quillen". Again, being not Thomas Jefferson Jackson See, I will attempt no explanation of this, other than to observe it and wonder.

Hey, Vern!

467 Morning, insomaniacals! I'm up after a fairly good night. Last evening before bed I tried approx. 15 mg of CBD isolate, not the kind with the THC, along with my melatonin. In contrast to last Sunday night, I clocked up a pretty good rest. Maybe the CBD gummy stuff is going to work???

'Tis 67 F., high humidity but almost no wind. Decent work out conditions.

Howzaboutchoo?

468 >> Opposite Cannon Collision Repair, is it not, Publius?

Yeah, that Cannon was a man of all trades. Mortician, collision repair, and PI. Drove a Lincoln Continental, in all trades he was participatin' in.

Yep, Verni Bon or Robert Vern died in NC, but he was interred right here in Ft. Inn.

Howdy, JQ,

Yes, this is the "isolate," as it's called. The fellow at the shop freely admitted that the stuff with the THC would produce a high, but I'd probably be asleep before it kicked in anyway. Still, I did not want that, just the sleepy part. A single 10 mg gummy Sat. night seemed to do nothing, but the 1.5 gummies last night maybe did.

Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at April 15, 2024 04:01 AM (omVj0)

473 Wolfus, does it turn off the "committee meeting" in your head at bedtime? That's what I need: something to turn off the mental blabbing what keeps me awake all night.

I'm probably talkin' stuff I shouldn't be talkin', but in that stuff about Vern Bob or Bod Vern Quillen, you saw something about Cannon Funeral Home, and Memorial Park/whatever. Cannon is a big local name in the funerary bidness.

Long time readers of this here blog may recall some of my recountings of Ol' Red, an Okinawa Vet and truly the stuff of local legend. He was a hell raiser, and when he got back from WWII, he was even more of a hellraiser, until he found a good woman, and Jesus, not necessarily in that order.

Anyway, ol' Red had some tales about the "daughters of funeral directors" and their proclivities and "cold hands" which I won't recount because of decency.

Anyway, over the year, a number of folks joked with my Daddy about what was going to happen, "When Cannon gets you". That included a dentist, who had put some gold crowns in Daddy's mouth. Well, Daddy outlived that dentist, so it was moot.

When it was all said and done, Cannon didn't get my Daddy, it was another funeral home. Not that I have anything agin' Cannon, I just like the other better.

478 thread, JQ asked about (non-THC) CBD gummies: "Does it turn off the 'committee meeting' in your head at bedtime? That's what I need: something to turn off the mental blabbing what keeps me awake all night."

JQ, if you're here: Yes, though melatonin plus magnesium will do that okay. My concern was *staying* asleep for a decent amount of time. And despite an hour's nap yesterday p.m., I did get about six hours last night. The real test will be tonight after I've been up all day at work. Maybe only one 10mg dose, one gummy cube, will be enough.

This stuff costs about $1 per square, so I want to get my money's worth and not have to spend $50 a month.

481 Fetterman's sensible opinions remind me of the Twitter meme with a bell curve and a guy in the middle saying something complex and wrong, while the big-brain on the right and the Neanderthal on the left agree in saying just the opposite, something simple and true. Fetterman's the guy on the left (duh! in more ways than one): smart enough to draw obviously true conclusions, but not smart enough to comprehend the complex sophisms of the guy in the middle, and way too dumb to refute the sophisms like the guy on the right.
