Music Thread: Have We Reached Peak Croc?

PeakCroc.jpg

[Even Garrett would be embarrassed]

The Allman Brothers Band
is one of the few bands that always catches my ear. They were great for a very long time, quintessentially American and, sadly, left with only one original member.

RIP Dickey Betts

***

I'm not a big fan of live recordings, but The Allman Brothers have a couple of gems. I linked to one, plus what I think is the best instrumental piece in Rock and Roll....

10 I would wear those shoes.
I owned that Allman Bros album. The Eat a Peach one. Unfortunately it got sold along with a bunch of other vintage albums that were probably worth way more, than I sold them for.
And I didn't last 15 seconds into the song behind the shoes.

I was visiting relatives last month and had the misfortune of being surrounded by several people who love Taylor Swift. I heard far more of her music than I desired, and while her business acumen is impressive, she makes heartless and forgettable music.

Why she is wildly popular is beyond me.

47 Croc Song: Better than 50/50 odds that Mom owned that LP. It sounds like the kind of music she listened to when I was a little kid.

Dad was a country music fan. So there wasn't much background music on when I was a sprout.

Including Ramblin' Man which went to #2 as a single, but was denied #1 by Cher's Half Breed. (Heh) A week later they headlined at Watkins Glen for 600,000, It was the peak of their first incarnation.

Posted by: polynikes at April

Miley Cyrus, love her or hate her, has an incredible voice. Britney Spears has an average voice at best, but does have an ear for what resonates with those who enjoy bubblegum pop. She is a craptastic (technical term) dancer and has always been carried by her backup dancers. Taylor Swift, also a decent voice but nothing incredible, nothing like the pipes Miley has, has an ability to write songs and does have musical talent in terms of playing instruments. So she has to have some musical something going on in there. I think she captured teenage girl angst, there wasn’t deep poetry happening, but relatable emotions. Now she is over 30 and it’s just kind of silly.

125 Another great Betts song was "in memory of Elizabeth Reed". I saw an interview where he explained who Elizabeth Reed was. At the time he wrote it, he was messing around with Boz Skaggs girlfriend whenever Boz was traveling. She wanted him to write a song for her, but he couldn't use her name since Boz would know.
So, the two used to go into a nearby shady cemetery where there was a nice quiet spot where they wouldn't be disturbed; the nearest gravestone to their spot read "in Memory of Elizabeth Reed. "

What I learned today. In Shakespeare's Hamlet, Hamlet discusses his mother saying, "“Now get you to my lady’s chamber, and tell her, let her paint an inch thick . . . .” Joseph Pearce contends that this is a thinly veiled jab at protestant Elizabeth I by Catholic Shakespeare. A contemporary had written, “It was commonly observed this Christmas that her Majesty when she came to be seen was continuously painted, not only all over her face, but her very neck and breast also, and that the same was in some places near half an inch thick.”

Well, they didn't have Botox in those days.

216 61 It used to be that the music, the actual playing of music, was the most important part of the performance. The quality of the band. Now it's just a face and body singing lyrics. I blame Madonna.

I am convinced it was grunge that indirectly killed music. That was the last time the music industry relied on artists for product. Most of the grunge people self destructed in various ways and the industry had no product. They set out to convince kids that forms of music that are generally artificially created by professional producers were "cool" and "modern". The "stars" were just easily replaceable frontpeople so if they couldn't or wouldn't work oh well. The industry still had product. 20 years of this and there are not enough kids playing guitars in garages, instead they are rapping or posing for pics.

Yep.

I'm fairly certain women see visible tattoos as "self expression" and "independence" and "art" and "spontaneity" and who knows what other silliness, while men look at those exact same tattoos on the same women and think "that's a woman who makes bad decisions that will affect the rest of her life, and I might have sex with her but I don't want her involved with my finances in any way."

I don't think it's a terrible thing to tell the office "I need a new doctor because I don't trust her judgement since I saw a thigh tattoo."

It wasn't even 20 years ago that visible tattoos - and beards - were prohibited not only in professional jobs but in almost any job dealing with the public. My hypothesis is that, similar to beards, it's tied to the crossdressing community. Women on massive doses of hormones can't prove that they are men if they can't show off wispy little teenage-boy mustaches and chinstrap beards, and corporate america had to accept all beards because of that.

Same with prison tats. I'm betting the women who started that trend were crossdressers and/or lesbians, and corporate America had to not only accept it but encourage it.
