Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | The Weekend Hobby Thread (4/13/24)![]() Good afternoon hobbyists. The only political statement to be made here today is the opening photo. No politics or current events. The photo submitted is a reminder to me that we haven't covered the hobby of off-roading with All Terrain Vehicles (ATVs) or Utility Task Vehicles (UTVs). Originally the game got started with the introduction of mini-bikes to Honda's 3-Wheel ATC then on to '4 wheelers' (ATVs.) From there things just got bigger and more expensive. Did things get better? I don't know, I've been riding 4 wheelers since 1995. (Get off my lawn and ATV trail). So The Fabulous and I are involved this weekend with some club activities. Things happen fast here when the Frozen Tundra thaws out. Speaking of the sun and thaw. How about this past week's eclipse? Regular commenter and all around good 'ette sent me the following to share with you folks. I don't know if you have access to Facebook or not, but here are some pics I got today while "spraying and praying". Read the explanation and the comments for more info: Feel free to post these on the blog! I have some others of the eclipse as it happened. I don't know how I got the ones in the FB post - I just put my eclipse glasses over my phone's camera lens, magnified everything about 20X, and watched it all happen over my camera. I didn't even know I had gotten those shots until much later; the thumbnails didn't seem all that specialSometimes it is better to be lucky than good Teresa. Pretty awesome advent you witnessed. More gorgeous scenery. Hiking is a pretty inexpensive hobby. Unless you are klutz like me then the ER visits start racking up. I received the following video and short letter from the following Lurker. MisHum, If you'd like, you can use any of my videos for the Hobby Thread. That monocycle race is crazy! They are not quite as fast as a motorcycle, but then they only have ONE wheel on which to balance. Amazing stuff.
The switching back and forth between camera shots is kind of cool as well. They have drones flying above to give the overhead shots and the riders are equipped with their own Go-Pro style cameras to give a point of view shot. Posted by: "Perfessor" Squirrel at April 13, 2024 05:43 PM (BpYfr) 19

JTB, if you're here, and for any other occasional pipe smokers: I ordered two tins of Mac Baren Burley London Blend this week. It just went on sale -- the blender only offers them once a year or so. I have enough pipe tobacco for months, so I didn't *need* to buy them. But as the saying goes: "It'll never be cheaper than right now." And it's a blend I like a lot.
They were scheduled to be delivered by UPS on Friday. I left the office about two hours before the truck showed up. So I'll need to wait until Monday. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at April 13, 2024 05:44 PM (omVj0) 21

For the pipe smokers since I consider it one of my hobbies. I tried some Peterson (formerly made by Dunhill) Elizabethan Mixture. I may have tried this blend in the distant past but can't recall. So I was pleasantly surprised at how good it is. This is a Virginia/perique blend and, while they are common, this is about the best I have tried. I plan to pick up another tin soon but found out Sutliff makes a 'match' blend based on the old original recipe. That gets top reviews so I will likely order an 8 ounce pack to try. If it is as good as the reviews, the match version would be a wonderful value.

I think I outgrew enjoying a mudbath when I was 12. Unlikely to ever ride an ATV for that reason. I can appreciate that others like it.
Bodging today caused a crick in my neck, but it was worth it. Working on The VW Bus today doing wiring. I decided to replace the 64 year old fusebox, so that means doing about 25 spade fittings, changing over from the old style ceramic fuses VW used then. Also changing out the headlight switch. The old one had play in it. The fusebox is located in the front kick panels under the large bus steering wheel. To work under there, you have to lay on your back on the front bench, twist your upper body down, then look up. I lock one leg on the steering wheel, but can really only do this for 15-20 minutes at a time. There are five lights in the speedometer and am changing those to spade fittings too, as a few of the springs that hold the bulbs were kinda weak/worn. I'll be glad when the wiring is done because then I plan to drive it. Can't run the streets when your lights are sketchy. Posted by: Air-cooled Al at April 13, 2024 06:04 PM (V5BDR) 38

As Wolfus mentioned, I've had good luck with the 'match' blends. The Match Walnut, a much missed blend, is especially good as is Barking Dog. The Edgeworth Ready Rubbed match is decent but not as good as I remember the original but the current 'original' isn't any better than the match version. I should probably put together an order of 2 or 4 ounce bags of various match blends to sample them. Posted by: JTB at April 13, 2024 06:11 PM (zudum) 41

Familiar routine in progress as hobby time, checking my fishing gear, doing cleanup and repair as required, then the real fun part--actual recon of the areas to be fished. Right now the creek perimeters are a bit flexible due to snowmelt so walking them will have to wait. Posted by: JTB at April 13, 2024 *** I've been mixing stuff for a while -- usually a pinch or so of a blend I find strong mixed in with something milder. Recently I bought the flake tobacco that inspired my cat's name, Stirling. A ten-minute trial told me it was powerful stuff. So I mix a bit of it with a milder Virginia, like Capstan Flake, or a mild burley like the Edgeworth Match you mentioned above. Not much of a hobby, but it works for me: I watch movies during the weekends wherein I started with a movie in my catalogue, then follow an actor to the next one, and so forth. I am up to 120 in my catalogue (not TJM big, but around 500). Rules are set, mostly: Has to be something I have on DVD or Blu-ray; never the same actor in succession, and try not to rely on one actor too often. The funny thing is, I have a lot of Ed Harris movies. never really realized that. So, choosing the next one will be difficult.

Complete swerve to textile arts
I found lovely and quite expensive (to me) English knitting wool in the most beautiful shade of green, between forest and loden in its color. Bought some pinks to go with it and started crocheting hexagons which look like roses, interspersing the dark green. They look like big Spanish tiles. I was intending an afghan but that felt so boring. So I am linking the "tiles" as a border for a very long wrap/shawl/scarf thing, which I will crochet in that beautiful green. Might even put a long thin fringe too. Imagining it so gorgeous, but it might just turn out tacky! Fun to work on and think about though. Posted by: skywch at April 13, 2024 06:41 PM (uqhmb) 56

Not much progress on the Robyn SB-510D project this week. I did strip the display and associated resistor packs off the ribbon cable as well as the channel selector. Also soldered up the Arduino board to a set of pins and tested that it would take a program. It does, so that's $2.48 well spent.
I still need to wire everything up on a breadboard and see if I got the right pins in the right places in the program. If I did, then I can put everything together on a strip board and connect it to the radio. If not, then I need to figure out what I did wrong and how to fix it. I came across some videos about drawing with pastel pencils, as opposed to colored pencils, and became intrigued. I have a few from different manufacturers picked up over the years for some reason. Just playing around I was surprised how different each maker was. Some are softer and more buttery, some are chalkier and take a finer point for details, some blend better, some are more vibrant than others. And the paper makes a HUGE difference.
Pastels have long interested me and these pencils add another facet to the medium. Time for some seriously fun experimenting. Posted by: JTB at April 13, 2024 07:04 PM (zudum) 72

I haven't done so yet, but my next bowl of the Elizabethan Mixture will be in a long stem clay pipe. It seems appropriate for the blend's name and with images of Shakespeare in a tavern.

It is closer to a calabash style than a bent Dublin but it is too generic to be sure.
I didn't find anything that extreme of a bend. I particularly like the shape of the bowl. Posted by: Oddbob at April 13, 2024 07:14 PM (/y8xj) 79

In the case of 'hobby', I guess at this point, as I have a work situation that enables me to pursue my interests without the work itself taking up really much, if any, of my mental effort or, realistically time, my life is inverted.

77 ... "What are you drawing? What's your subject? Do you have any formal training or all self-taught?"
TRex, I have no formal training (and no apparent talent). I try to sketch and draw just to acquire a skill that might produce something and try to improve over time. It is strictly a fun activity that happens to intrigue me. Subject? Whatever catches my eye, mostly animals and flowers so far. My attempts to draw faces are appropriate for a Twilight Zone episode. MH was kind enough to use a couple of my sketches two weeks ago. People's comments were kind. I can say that compared to when I started (wish I had started sixty years ago) my stuff is a vast improvement. Everything is an experiment, and a surprise, at this point. I had to think about this and honestly, I enjoy information aggregation and syncretic relational conclusions. I just like it. I do research on any given subject, but not one subject, a subject that has inter-relational branches, and cohere them into an interesting blend.
To me it's like... cooking. No meal is one thing, it is many things. Currently I'm on a hobbyist campaign of reading through sporting goods magazines from about 1925-1934 to track various political threads regarding firearms ownership and social attitudes not only in USA but worldwide. It's very interesting. I'm saving Colt-related information and sharing it on Colt Forum. Posted by: LenNeal at April 13, 2024 07:27 PM (43xH1) 87
Hi. Tom aka Thomas Lee, here. If you check out my reverbnation page you will hear songs that were recorded over 20 years ago when I first got a multi track recorder, with me doing all the tracks, and some much more professional recordings from a few years ago. Mostly my songs but a few written with a good friend with his vocals and harmonica. Have a listen. Maybe you will enjoy one or two.

I'm not a Colt enthusiast, not a firearm guy, I just like doing the research. It's super interesting to me.
I've done research on Balkan Magic, Greek Pagan beliefs, Mexican Gods. I've done research on the origins of planetary transmissions. It's fun. Posted by: LenNeal at April 13, 2024 07:31 PM (43xH1) 91

JTB - We used to live near the Pasadena Art Center College of Design. Great to see the work of so many very talented students. They learn to sketch and sculpt by hand before they're released to computer designs. Among other things, they have a transportation department. I always enjoyed seeing the drawings and models of their ideas for concept cars. Maybe that's an idea for next week's thread...

When I was in High School one of my buddies in our group had a reel to reel. As guys do we always ragged on each other about how terrible voices each had. One day we were going to settle it by singing the same song and record on the reel to reel. Some better than others but we see all terrible. I don't think we tagged on each other on that subject again. Mission accomplished.

Nobody will believe this but my war-crime research is actually based from an inquiry from a colleague who was, professionally, a music critic in Former Yugoslavia, and gave me a piece on Adam Ant to edit. It was in a packet with a piece about an 'atrocity' in Yugo in 1941 so I did them both, and told him that he was right about Adam Ant as underrated, but his atrocity was not a war crime.
There was some upset about that, both Adam Ant and the other issue, and I got defensive as I knew I was correct, and then went to a great deal of trouble to prove it. Torpedoed a huge business for his municipality. Lots of people there still don't like me. Not my problem. But then, as I seemed to be the only dispassionate researcher with the backbone to step up, I got asked about more events, and have ended up being an arbiter of German war crimes in Yugo during WWII. This has now ballooned into Israeli stuff as some of these people are in current arms deals. Posted by: LenNeal at April 13, 2024 07:44 PM (43xH1) 102

TRex, I grew up not far from RISD, Rhode Island School of Design. This was long before computers were a factor for such things. I was amazed at the creativity of the students both for 'art' stuff and for technical drawing. I suspect that memory was one of the sparks igniting my attempts at drawing in retirement, along with the NC Wyeth illustrations in Treasure Island. Kind of strange, sometimes odd, where a hobby interest might begin. Posted by: JTB at April 13, 2024 07:49 PM (zudum) 106

SHADOW CHASING FOR 40 YEARS
- May 30, 1984. Pouring down rain in West Germany so I couldn't see the partial (an annular in the SE U.S.) - July 11, 1991. 70% partial in San Antonio. I was pissed that I couldn't see the total in Mexico. (But I will see the exeligmos in the U.S.) This is where I first heard San Antonio would get a total in 2024 on the local news. Later that year I pegged the date on my own using a 1988 World Almanac and a world map. - August 11, 1999. Totality in The Pirm. But...30 minutes before totality, a cloudburst - May 20, 2012, an annular in Albuquerque, NM. - Oct 23, 2014. Partial at San Marcos - August 21, 2017. First heard of in a Mitsubishi Eclipse commercial in 1990. I went to WY for that one. - April 8, 2024. Fredericksburg, TX. Cloudy...but I saw totality.
