From the Met site:
Kitchen Scene Peter Wtewael Dutch Typical of Dutch genre paintings from the first half of the seventeenth century, Wtewael’s kitchen scene abounds in visual jokes of a frankly erotic nature, such as the prominent display of meat on a skewer. The grins of housemaid and errand boy indicate their enjoyment of one another’s company, while the lavishly depicted foodstuffs surrounding them allude to the pleasures of the flesh. Such combinations of risqué humor with abundant still-life elements had deep roots in Netherlandish painting. Pieter van Thiel and Keith Moxey independently reported (1980) that they were strongly reminded of works by Joachim Wtewael. The picture was subsequently brought to the attention of the Wtewael specialist Anne Lowenthal, who published it (1986) as a new attribution to Wtewael's son Peter. Peter Wtewael's responsibility for the work can hardly be doubted. Sometimes he did; sometimes he didn't:
||Peter Wtewael's responsibility for the work can hardly be doubted. Lowenthal describes the "hearty figures," facial types, robust naturalism, and "a preference for convex forms" as typical of the artist. In his Adoration of the Shepherds (Wallraf-Richartz-Museum, Cologne), which is signed "Peter wte wael" and dated 1624, the faces of the Virgin and of two of the shepherds recall the features and, oddly enough, the jovial expressions of the couple depicted here. The kitchen maid also resembles the figure in Peter Wtewael's A Shepherdess with a Lamb, of the late 1620s (location unknown), where the lopsided grin similarly suggests a savvy attitude.|| And the full history link is under the 'Catalogue Entry' link and not a direct one. Young men from the farm flirting with maids in kitchens or in the marketplace is a theme that descends from Pieter Aertsen (1507/8-1575) and his Antwerp pupil Joachim Beuckelaer to a fair number of Dutch and Flemish painters. The earlier works in this tradition convey religious and ethical ideas while entertaining the viewer with scenes of human comedy and abundant displays of naturalistic representation. Dutch authors such as Erasmus (1466?–1536) and Dirck Volkertsz Coornhert (1522–1590) compared food and sex as sensual pleasures and also condemned professions such as cookery, butchery, and fishmongering as serving the baser appetites.
Two aspects of Wtewael's painting are less reminiscent of Aertsen and his followers than of erotic subjects that were painted in Utrecht during the 1620s by Gerrit van Honthorst (1592–1656): the direct encounter of an amorous couple in the immediate foreground, and the frank sexuality of their gestures and of several motifs. Such candid indications of carnality are also found in contemporary works produced in other cities (Frans Hals's Merrymakers at Shrovetide, 14.40.605 is one of the best examples), but they appear to have been especially popular Posted by: andycanuck (vtyCZ) at April 11, 2024 10:02 AM (vtyCZ) 126

In The Met’s picture, the kitchen maid's skewering of a chicken, the young man's offer of a bird (a duck, in this case), and his handling of an open jug with an extended middle finger are clear allusions to sexual intercourse. "Hunting the hare" was a euphemism for lovemaking, but here the dead hares probably stand for fertility, as does the basket of eggs (which were also considered an aphrodisiac). The various meats (vlees, or flesh) refer to carnal desire, and draw a parallel between gluttony and lust. The hanging cock and almost any form that appears phallic (especially the pestle in a mortar) amplify the humor, and also demonstrate the artist's powers of invention and description.

In her own words, it changed her life. “If my Australian brothers and sisters, the police, are willing to do this to me what are they willing to do to other people?” She was soon to find out. Smit continued her protests undeterred and in 2021 she was arrested and charged with encouraging protests against Victoria state Premier Dan Andrews’ lockdown policies and vaccine mandates, and refusing to take a PCR test. Warning: Polling is real. It holds information. And Joe Biden needs a significant boost. Trump and Biden are currently polling head to head at an even level, more or less. That is 4 points worse for us than Hillary Clinton ‘16 vs Trump, and 8 points worse for us than Joe Biden ‘20 vs Trump.
Polling, 2016 had Clinton 4 points over Trump. She won the popular vote by 2.1 points...giving Trump thin victories in battleground states to win the EC. 4 points up was not enough. Polling, 2020- Biden was 8 points up...but won the popular vote by 4.5 points. The polling was off by… 3 or 4 points. In Trump’s favor. 8 percent, it turns out, is good enough for both an electoral victory and a popular vote victory. We need to see polling that has Joe Biden up at least 5 points over Donald Trump. And preferably 7 or 8 points up. Biden is doing a superb job as President and as our 2024 Nominee. But the data shows reelection will be anything but a confident cakewalk. Based on what voters this year are telling pollsters, over and over, Donald Trump’s pathway to the 2024 presidency is in better shape than his 2016 pathway was. Posted by: AZ deplorable moron at April 11, 2024 09:58 AM (MGnUt) ++++ Yup. Refrigeration took time to get down to the household level and houses used ice - much cheaper ice, available year 'round - for quite a while after refrigeration. The first commercial/industrial use of refrigeration was for manufacturing ice. We still have this legacy today with how domestic A/C systems are rated. The standard unit for A/C capacity in North America is the "ton," which is odd. The A/C "ton" is the amount of heat it takes to melt one ton of ice over a 24-hour period, and is a legacy of refrigeration sizing as determined by that first major user: industrial ice production. This is how you know our election systems are DESIGNED for rigging. Facts: 1. All Americans know Vivek's proposed voting system here would be secure AND credible, unlike the current system. 2. There is no (legitimate) obstacle to implementing this improved system. 3. The improved system will not be implemented. Nor will it be taken seriously, at the same time all sides agree election credibility is an existential threat to the country. It's right in front of our noses: The system is designed to NOT be auditable. And there is only one reason for that. Posted by: andycanuck (vtyCZ) at April 11, 2024 10:21 AM (vtyCZ) 188

Biden says he is examining power to shut US border on his own President Joe Biden said in an interview broadcast on Tuesday that he and his administration are trying to determine whether he has the authority to act on his own to shut down the U.S.'s southern border with Mexico to migrants, should it be deemed necessary. Biden told Univision in the interview that because bipartisan legislation that would have granted him the authority to shut the border was stalled by Republicans in Congress, he was being encouraged to try to do it alone. "We're examining whether or not I have that power," Biden said, adding there was "no guarantee" he has the power without legislation. Scott Adams @ScottAdamsSays Terrible Commander-in-Chief skills. That's why Trump did it. That's why Trump was able to implement Remain in Mexico. The president already has vast powers over the border. The border is not a new issue. It's been an issue since the start of the Republic. The president has mass deported millions of people at one time before. It was never considered illegal. You can't make this up. For about a year now, Bill Barr and Karl Rove have been running a purported election integrity outfit called "RITE" (Restoring Integrity and Trust in Elections). I found them attacking Zuckerbucks and promoting Georgia's "Election Integrity Act of 2021 ... designed to address various issues that had arisen in the 2020 elections." See link below on first page. Of course, when Bill Barr was the Attorney General, he had the opportunity to actually do something far more consequential about election integrity in 2020 instead of just watching that ship go by. Or now by litigating in the name of that cause here or there as funding allows. Instead, Barr did nothing, claiming it was not his role and deliberately undercutting President Trump in a surprise one-on-one AP interview in December 2020. And he did this (i.e., did nothing), despite the fact that Zuckerbucks could have been shut down by the Tax Division of US DOJ. Amazing. Chutzpah to infinity. If you're donating to RITE, and paying for Barr's and Rove's quasi-retirement years, you really need to think again. Posted by: andycanuck (vtyCZ) at April 11, 2024 10:31 AM (vtyCZ) 227

You don't debate FIRST when the problem is this big. There are many things the government just cannot do legally. Irrespective of the supposed size of the problem. BREAKING, INSIDE THE FEDERAL RESERVE: Hidden Camera captures Principal Economist @federalreserve talking about Jerome Powell’s legacy as “somebody who held the line against like, Trump.” The influential agency responsible for maintaining a stable monetary system appears to not just be establishing interest rates, but to be setting policies for desired social outcomes. “Under Powell, the Fed has changed to think about equity issues, like racial issues, think about wealth inequality as part of the mandate, as part of the things we are following. Think about climate change.” Aurel Hizmo, Principal Economist at the Federal Reserve, who prior to working at the Fed was an Assistant Professor @NYUStern and received his PhD in Economics from @DukeU, helps write speeches for Federal Reserve Board Chair Jerome Powell for the Federal Open Market Committee. Huh. I just saw a new-to-me piece of corporate speak: "nearshoring."
It's the same as offshoring, just somewhere closer geographically to help deal with time zone problems. Instead of offshoring to India, for example, you offshore to Costa Rica. "It still ain't most of *you,* but the survivors won't have to work nights to train up your foreign replacements and visiting the offshore site might be nicer." The evolution of business speak has many examples of this, I guess. "Layoffs" became "downsizing" became "right-sizing." "Outsourcing" became "managed services." "Low-cost" became "best-cost." "Offshoring" became "nearshoring." Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at April 11, 2024 10:42 AM (HnUIn) 261
