The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

"I understand that they're not going to relieve any pain. And quite frankly they probably just don't believe me.

"Please know I am truly very sorry." James Crumbley

Quote II

“An open-minded spirit no longer exists within NPR, and now, predictably, we don’t have an audience that reflects America,” That wouldn’t be a problem for an openly polemical news outlet serving a niche audience. But for NPR, which purports to consider all things, it’s devastating both for its journalism and its business model.Veteran National Public Radio (NPR) editor Uri Berliner

Casa Misanthrope holds onto traditional games. No "inclusive" Scrabble for this family.

You guys ever played Scrabble with a Gen Zer?

It's a terrible time, mostly because they're not allowed to be on their phone.

So now Mattel has come up with a wonderful new version of Scrabble just for Gen Z, Scrabble: Snowflake Edition.

What's next, Participation Trophy Spin The Bottle?

Those of you who follow The ONT know I don't care for soccer. I really don't see the fascination. But to each their own. That said about the game, I'll say this. The fans are die hards. And a little terrorist threat or two won't persuade them from staying away from the game.

Defiant football fans flock to Champions League clashes involving Man City and Arsenal despite ISIS threats: 'I thought about it for a second, then said f*** it, I'm coming to London to drink beer!'

The Democrats are not only communist swine. They are the leading intellects of scientific fact. What a dumb twat.

Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, a member of the Party of Science, gave instructions on what the moon is made of – gases! Who knew? Most of us thought it was a body of rocks and minerals.

The Argentina government of Javier Milei is now demanding the right to inspect a Chinese antenna facility that was established in Argentina in 2014 and began operating in 2017 under a 50-year-lease.

Man Found Drunk, Naked, Sitting In Garbage Can
Perp claimed he was "allowed" sidewalk display of intoxication

APRIL 8--Arguing that he was not subject to arrest, a Florida Man told police that he “was allowed to be drunk and disorderly and sit naked in a trash can on the public sidewalk,” according to an arrest affidavit.

St. Petersburg cops allege that Wyly James Weeks, 35, was intoxicated, unsteady on his feet, and smelled of booze when they discovered him late Saturday evening on a downtown street.

Weeks, seen at right, was extricated, sans clothes, from a corner trash can and arrested for disorderly intoxication and resisting an officer without violence, both of which are misdemeanors.

16 The sidewalk closed thing brings a memory.
I was the staff duty officer for my unit once at Ft Lewis back in my army days. The motor pool was getting a new fence put in and the old fence was gone. But the gate remained. About 2 in the morning the post staff duty officer shows up all pissed off because the gate was not locked.
Huh?
He wrote me up for it even though I pointed out there was no fence. Not good enough.
In the morning I briefed my commander and he just laughed.

49 Thank you, MisHum for the exposure to different types of music. I maybe shouldn’t admit Iihave not listened to Dan Auerbach, I mean maybe in a Black Keys song here or there, but I haven’t actively looked for his music. The video struck a chord with me, dare I say it like that, with dancing. They were just letting the music move them in the way music does to the young and old alike. Nothing choreographed. Just joyful movement. Maybe I am tired, but it was cool. Obviously I have a dance background, and I still find choreographed dancing beautiful, but raw, no dance training movement is also beautiful.

But I want to look at stars, planets, and or the moon. In a great spot for this. I want to wait a few more days, about 1/4 Moon, right?

Or how about Mars or Jupiter? The Milky Way was really cool. Also it is still Cold AF here, and when does the Moon come up, morning or evening?

117 Me thinks the US and others have been prototyping various drone tech in Ukraine. The accelerated use of them, the complexity and lethality is really something. Russia's doing the same... but lagging behind, as is usually the case. Underwater drones are the "next big thing" over there.

On a related note, DJI, China's biggest purveyor of commercial and hobby class drones is supposed to be banned from doing business in the US. If you were/are unaware, the software used to fly them from a smartphone basically spies on everything it touches... the video and photos one takes with the drone, the GPS data, info on the network(s) the phone's attached to and so on. They've been discovered at sensitive FedGov sites... doing drone things. Personally, I think they're a networked spy system sold to unassuming Americans.

There are millions of DJI "quad-copter" hobbyist drones in use. Owning one will potentially be illegal should the legislation pass. The hobbyist drone community is obviously divided on this.

More seriously, our vehicle we use to tow our small camper blew out the rear differential. The vehicle also needs a new transmission pretty soon. And although it's rated to tow our small camper, it labors a bit when we do that.

It will cost about $9000 if we want to keep this vehicle. So we are considering a bunch of things. Get rid of the camper get something for which tow capacity doesn't matter? Keep the camper and get a pickup?

We test drove a 2021 Ram 1500 Tradesman crew cab today, asking price $15,000. Don't know whether to steer toward Toyota, Dodge, or Ford. We want something that will tow a small camper and not be too tall to easily climb into.

Betterhalf feels the same way with her knee replacement. We recently bought a 2012 Toyota Tundra with the v8 4.6 engine (not the largest V8 engine). It has a step below the door that makes it easy to enter and exit.

It towed a small (just over 2000lbs) trailer on back roads (stop signs, lights, turns) and we barely knew it was behind us.
It got 19.5 freeway coming back from California and 15mpg towing the trailer without any freeway.
We are pleased.

*warning. Math*

How much does the camper with all your stuff weigh?

Get a tow vehicle that can handle (brake safely) that weight, plus a 20% safety margin. This is your towed weight.

The tow vehicle needs to be capable of physically moving and braking itself (plus all you, a full tank of fuel, and all your stuff). This is your gross carrier vehicle weight.

The combination of gross carrier vehicle weight, plus the towed weight is your gross vehicle weight rating.

Get a tow vehicle with a gvwr that is a minimum of 20% over what you estimate you combination weight is going to be.

Emmie: Look at the published tow charts for your candidate vehicle and note the differences in tow capacity between the different engine/rear end ratio combinations. Derate that number by 30% - meaning if the chart says it can pull 10,000 lbs don't use it for anything over 7000 GVWR. Also look at your tow vehicle's GVWR rating - the maximum it can weigh and safely stop/manuever. Also on the door jamb should be a sticker stating actual payload capacity - how much people/pets/luggage you can load the tow vehicle with. Include the tongue weight of the trailer. Ex: Rams have GVWRs of around 6900 lbs and weigh 5000 themselves - that leaves 1900 lbs for passengers, luggage, cargo and the tongue weight of the trailer - the additional weight the trailer adds to your vehicle. That's where a lot of people mess up - they don't consider or underestimate that added weight.

176 Fat fingered something. Round 2.

I am going to finally go and order a Honda Trail 125 tomorrow. This burning desire has been building for 7 years and I finally was overwhelmed by it all today. Not having to shovel boatloads of cash to the recent college graduate and having the house painted last month is helping out a lot here.

What's that? Yes, I am out of my friggin' mind.

Posted by: lost in space at April 09, 2024 11:03 PM (k1/QX)

177 Yes, the RPMs will be noticeably higher, when “towing mode” is enabled (or overdrive disabled). The engine isn’t working “harder” though.

One of the main reasons is to keep the transmission oil temperatures down. Higher volume flow rates through the transmission achieves this, as well as a cooler.

Trucks setup for towing have a few different options. One is a dedicated hitch. And a brake controller. Nor your head “yes” - you want a brake controller. A few states - Oregon, Nevada, New Hampshire, Tennesee, require them.

179 So they ended up doing the 4Runner reveal, completely unimpressive, there are now 9 trim levels, WHAT??, it's pretty much a Tacoma with a cabin integrated, It's not clear how the TRD Pro and Trail Hunter trim levels differentiate themselves and at the end of the day, you're driving a turbo 4 cylinder at the lower end or a turbo 4 cylinder hybrid with an electric motor.

And in order to squeeze in the hybrid batteries, they had to shrink the gas tank by 3 gallons, so now your range is under 400 miles.

And the shrunken gas tank is also on the non-hybrid models.

I mean, if you want a four runner, go out and get a 3rd, 4th or 5th Gen, because people are going to start snapping those up toot sweet.

Some overdrive transmissions had a mechanically weak fifth gear, and the torque reversals that occurred when going from "pull" to "coast" would eventually break them. More recent generations of overdrive transmissions should have had this fixed. But if your vehicle has a "tow/haul" button, use it.

Definitely try to get a factory tow package with a Cl IV factory hitch and integrated brake controller. Like hoses and ladders - get more than you think you need.

It's more than likely a leased vehicle and the fleet manager is getting a new vehicle to add to the fleet.

If we keep our camper, I'm wondering which trucks or other tow-worthy vehicles would be especially long-lived because we drive our cars a long time. We're big Toyota fans, but the truck I found today that seems to be a good deal is a Dodge Ram work truck from a fleet.

Aren't fleet former rentals?

If you don't mind signing up for something, go to Carkiller.com. a YT mechanic with 50 yrs experience created the site for people to ask car and truck questions. You'll need to create an account to post, but there's no constant e-mails. You'll want to ask if you should buy the truck and give its VIN number, make and model, engine type, and mileage. If you're lucky, the site owner will answer.

I asked about a car with a clean carfax, and he told me the car I was looking at was in a wreck. Might be worth the time to ask.

Two thoughts.

1. Even Gaia needs to get lubed up prior to a megathrust.

B. Most of the Earf's fault lines are underwater to begin with. Just crack open Google Maps, set it to satellite view and look at how the Earf is cracked like an eggshell. Most faults will have some water in them, because there is usually ground water present at some level nearly everywhere. Earthquakes are a natural consequence of plate tectonics, which has been going on for several billion years, and shows no sign of ending. Which is a good thing.

252 179 So they ended up doing the 4Runner reveal, completely unimpressive, there are now 9 trim levels, WHAT??, it's pretty much a Tacoma with a cabin integrated, It's not clear how the TRD Pro and Trail Hunter trim levels differentiate themselves and at the end of the day, you're driving a turbo 4 cylinder at the lower end or a turbo 4 cylinder hybrid with an electric motor.

But if you like it, buy it, use it for a few months, doing some trailer towing, and if you find you don't like it, you could probably sell out of it without taking a huge hit. Might even be able to make a buck if you drove it to a part of the country where trucks are in big demand.

259 I think everyone could pick up the tongue of a very lightweight trailer, and "walk it back" into any space large enough to clear the dimensions.

'Cause when you're facing the tongue, and have your Mk1 Mod0 eyeball on the thing, you naturally know how to walk it left or right, backwards or pull forward on it, in order to line it up for the final placement. You don't have to really think about it, you just do it.

Here's the trick. Just imagine that the hitch ball IS "your hands" Now, without a trailer, you'd know just how to steer to make that hitch ball "touch" a given spot you'd be backing towards. Probably be accurate to within an inch in the doing.

So, keep that mentality, and just use the hitch ball as "your hands" exactly as if you were facing the trailer and walking it in manually.

You won't have to be thinking about front wheel angles, or gripping the steering wheel at the top or the bottom.

Pseudo-Zen, but it works. Try it.

279 The Honda Gold Wing flat six sports both perfect Primary Balance, but also perfect Secondary Balance.

You can balance a nickel on the engine, at idle.

Primary Balance, imagine a pencil spinning on it's axis, with not even the slightest upset to it's perfect rotation.

Secondary Balance. Imagine that same pencil, spinning perfectly, but also without any wobble whatsoever along it's length, each end putting no more stress on it's end-bearings, than the mid-crankshaft bearings between the crankshaft throws.

Ssssmmmmoooooootttthhh. As in, "electric motor" smooth.

Bonus. The '88 'Wng and later (all 6 cyl models) have barely any flywheel weight at all. They'll make RPM damn near as quickly as a Ferarri. What SEEMS to be a flywheel effect when you snap the throttle closed, is a computer controlled artifice of the electronics slowing the fuel flow more slowly and smoothly, than the twist grip had commanded. And, it works, perfectly so.

Nope. Staggered crank, all the way down the line. But, the Honda Engineers did the Black Woman NASA Math, and figured out the degrees and timings.

For a flat six, I can see that.

What amazes me, is how Mercedes and Audi figured out how to balance an inline FIVE cylinder engine.

Mind. Boggled.

O/T. Brother Hammer. I need to beg Lightning Arrestor advice from you. The options in the catalogs are... bewildering. I've GOT the 8 ft. ground rod hammered into the ground. But, yeah. I want those Arrestors inline in the Coax, before it fries the house.

I'm just thinking that a mechanic has access to records of repairs done without insurance claims. That's probably why they ask you for the VIN. If you don't go through your insurance, carfax doesn't know about it, but a mechanic's database would.

291 When I started mid-range delivery I leased the trucks. Every time I took the truck in I went back an talked to the mechanics. Which one do you like to work on? What's the problem with working on this one? The appreciated someone interested in what they were doing and it helped me pick out the trucks that I would eventually buy.

RG-58, for the OTA TV antenna.

Premium Coax for up to 500 Watt HAM rig. Only 100 w/o Amp, but allowing for future expansion.

CB grade Coax for...well, CB/SSB base station rig, to compliment the HAM setup.

Comms is Comms, and I remember here after Hurricane Ike, with no Cel service for nearly #twoweeks.

So, the RIGHT arrestor for each of those three Coax paths.

314 Can an antenna tower be fitted with a lightning rod, in addition to lightning arrestors?
Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon
----------

Sure. The grounded tower and/or rod simply serve to de-ionize the air around the structure. The arrestor is a safeguard against nasties getting into the gear. Especially *induced* nasties, not the consequence of an actual strike. A direct strike on an incoming lead would not be 'arrested' in any meaningful way, but strikes 1/4 mile away can induce very high voltage in the antenna and/or lead-in wire. That is the stuff that an arrester can handle.

336 Mike Hammer. I'll rig the ground for the metal bucket, but keep it on Standby, out in the garage.

But as for disconnecting the leads, fortunately, I've designed this tower system to make that a very nimble task.

All three Coaxes will be joined by connectors in a Junction Box at the Fascia level of the house. I'll be able to separate those lines soon into any first storm warnings.

A sudden thunderstorm out of nowhere though, and the Arrestors will have to earn their costs.

But I think I will do the wide copper mesh ground "around the house". But just inside the pilings and lattice work, hidden from outside view. Might even lightly bury the copper mesh runs, just in case.

F'kn copper thieves. I can but hope they'll grab hold, right WHEN the lightning strikes. I'll not shed a tear.

365 Good ole G.K. Chesterton - I think he'd be delighted that he lives on as much by his philosophical contributions as his literary efforts. Of course, he often combined the two, such as "The Oracle of the Dog," where Father Brown solves up a case of murder while pointing out some dangerous trends only then taking root in the soil of Western Civilization:

It's part of something I've noticed more and more in the modern world, appearing in all sorts of newspaper rumours and conversational catchwords; something that's arbitrary without being authoritative. People readily swallow the untested claims of this, that, or the other. It's drowning all your old rationalism and scepticism, it's coming in like a sea; and the name of it is superstition." 1/

369 And this one, Father Brown on the hidden perils of disbelief: "When men choose not to believe in God, they do not hereafter believe in nothing; they then become capable of believing in anything."

I wonder what Chesterton (and Father Brown) would think of the current state of the Church. I fear it would lead both of them into despair, but they would still cling to the faith. 3/fin

370 354 https://www.shorturl.at/ seems like a good url tool.

Yes. I've use it, also https://is.gd and https://tinyurl.com/app
All good but occasionally cannot access one so I use the other. Woke URL shorteners may fail on particular domains and then I boycott them.

Gee! 10/31/1974
I was living in Cambridge, MA and had not yet met my future (and now late) wife, who I miss dearly even after 3 years.

375 Well, tried to give sleep a shot but no dice. Ugh.

376 Took a couple of CBD oil capsules Miss Linda got on a free trial a little while ago. The oil is supposed to help you sleep, and maybe it did because I got six hours. But I might have gotten that anyway. I'm thinking of trying the gummies or the oil Ace mentioned. The stuff ain't cheap, but if it works --

Any experiences?

378 I've tried just about everything but not CBD. Yet.

379 Can't get CBD here. Could drive a ways & get it in neighboring state, though... My luck? I'd get 'busted' bringing it home.

380 It's warmish and breezy, but I really need to go work out. I need to get three sessions a week at a minimum, and don't like going on Saturday, so MWF is the usual.

We're supposed to see some heavy rain today, starting around 7 am. Then, supposedly, cooler and drier on Th & F.

381 Morning, group. No insomnia today, just a lifetime of rising early taught to me by my role model, my father. Never have been able to get back to sleep once awakened.

The eclipse was most interesting, we had almost full totality, the lighting changes were eerie, and as has been said frequently the process for people who were experiencing it for the first time must have been absolutely horrifying. The ending of their world.

Hi, JQ! Yeah, this state has it legal, but with a strict limit of how much THC can be in it. I was planning on buying the non-THC version anyway.

I don't understand. Isn't it the thc that make it effective? Guess I'm just a dinosaur. Meh.

Good luck, Wolfus! Hope you can find relief somehow.

384 Speaking of sleep-- I'm gonna try it again.

Good night, all.

Remember, Pixy said techie threads would be a bit late for a while.

You might be right. But I'm gun-shy of ingesting anything which might affect my sobriety. Less than .3% is probably not going to get me addicted though!

389 Am I the only person who thinks these quotes of the day are completely useless? They're always without any context, from someone I've never heard of, and have no intrinsic meaning or relevance. Might as well quote passers-by on their phones in Times Square .
