Born in Charleston, South Carolina, Louis Rémy Mignot was one of few Southerners to succeed in the competitive New York art world. During the war years, however, Mignot found himself torn between his Southern allegiances and his life in the North. In 1862, Mignot arranged an auction of forty-seven of his paintings to raise funds for passage overseas. The haunting Sunset, Winter was among these works. Mignot settled in England, never to return. He died of smallpox at the age of thirty-nine.

Except for the house, this landscape reminds me a bit of the Chalmette Monument Park when I was a kid, when my brother and I would play Combat! on chilly winter afternoons. We weren't usually there until sunset, though, so I'm imagining quite a bit. But the flatness and bare trees are very much what I remember.

The Hill: Top Democrats acknowledge that Biden won’t win this year by the same Electoral College landslide in 2020, conceding winning Arizona and Georgia will be tough given Biden’s low approval rating. Democrats are counting on the “blue wall” in the Midwest: Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania, where Biden has seen an uptick in polling numbers and where his effort to rebuild domestic manufacturing is most likely to pay off.
Apparently the term has taken on a new meaning. It used to be "so solid that they should hold even in a tough year". Apparently - it now includes "We're behind but we have reason to hope if our latest efforts prove fruitful 2016 didn't have Roe v Wade overturned, where every state that voted to include a state Constitutional amendment to make abortion legal - either red or blue, voted to do so. 2024 is night and day different from 2016. The artist sure knows how to portray a winter sunset and the look it has on a landscape. The way the colors of the sky blend and evolve is delicate, almost photo-realistic. But it's the trees in silhouette that make it a winter scene. So effective and evocative. I'm not surprised Mignot is associated with the Hudson School.

And for the record, it was very cool. More so than I thought it might be. Covid? That's pure manmade ugliness all the way down. Something built by man to hurt mankind and destroy our way of life. The FBI on Saturday arrested an 18-year-old in Idaho for reportedly attempting to provide material support and resources to the Islamic State group. The arrest came one day before the suspect was allegedly going to carry out a series of attacks on Idaho churches in the name of ISIS. Alexander Scott Mercurio, of Coeur d'Alene, allegedly pledged allegiance to ISIS and planned to carry out attacks on churches in the city on Sunday using "knives, firearms, and fire," according to a statement released by the Department of Justice.

Mike Pence @Mike_Pence
President Trump’s retreat on the Right to Life is a slap in the face to the millions of pro-life Americans who voted for him in 2016 and 2020. By nominating and standing by the confirmation of conservative justices, the Trump-Pence Administration helped send Roe v. Wade to the ash heap of history where it belongs and gave the pro-life movement the opportunity to compassionately support women and unborn children. In the landmark Dobbs decision, the Supreme Court returned the question of abortion to the states and the American people. The American people elect presidents, senators and congressmen, and a majority of Americans long to see minimum national protections for the unborn in federal law. But today, too many Republican politicians are all too ready to wash their hands of the battle for life. Republicans win on life when we speak the truth boldly and stand on the principle that we all know to be true – human life begins at conception and should be defended from womb to tomb. However much our Republican nominee or other candidates seek to marginalize the cause of life, I know pro-life Americans will never relent until we see the sanctity of life restored t Posted by: andycanuck (vtyCZ) at April 09, 2024 10:40 AM (vtyCZ) 246

Maybe that's just how it has to be, though. If the Sun were much larger and the Moon the same apparent size, the latter would be lost against the glare, and there'd be no eclipse. (Not to mention the Earth would be too hot for life at its current orbit.) If the Moon were so large or close (with its current mass) as to occlude the Sun every month, the Earth would be racked with terrific earthquakes and tides to the point that life would also have a hard time getting started. TBH Dollar Tree Shoppers are revolting.
Posted by: TC at April 09, 2024 *** I see some pretty revolting shoppers every week here. On the other hand, in the Birmingham, AL, suburbs, the stores and patrons are very nice. The more expensive items, $3 to $5, are for things they didn't carry a few years ago, like Red Baron pizzas and Tina's burritos and chimichangas. Just about everything else is still $1.25, though. In the landmark Dobbs decision, the Supreme Court returned the question of abortion to the states and the American people.
The fact that President Trump acknowledges the SCOTUS ruling, understands it, and chooses to abide by it is a stab in the back of all true patriots who totally haven't been paid to help ensure that Democrats get elected by advocating for policies which are both not universally popular and unconstitutional. -- Mike "Judas" Pence Posted by: I used to have a different nic at April 09, 2024 10:46 AM (U7wke) Yeah, exactly. Lay a chuck of wax paper down on the kitchen counter. Ball up a glob of ground beef the size of your choosing. Lay another chunk of wax paper over the glob of ground beef. Take a dinner plate and center the bottom of it over the wax paper-covered glob of ground beef. Press down firmly. Remove plate and top chunk of wax paper.

Posted by: Braenyard at April 09, 2024 *** DG and Family Dollar stores, here at least, are dark and forbidding inside, with tall shelves that tower over you in the narrow aisles. DT is better lit and has wider aisles. And they really do have items closer (now) to $1.00 in price; such things are rare in DG & FD stores. I shape burgers by hand. Roll a little ball together, hold it in the palm of your hand, gently press it out with the heel of the other hand until its the size of your palm. Mush a thumb into the middle for even cooking and expansion room so you get burgers and not grilled meatloafs.

Yes Pence advocate for people who want to stab a nine month baby in the skull. How "principled". Coclsucker. And people STILL wonder why the country rejects Republicans. People don't like phony skunks. As far as they see it the choice is always two pieces of shit, one of whom has fantastic PR. And most of the time they are right.
