40 Born in Charleston, South Carolina, Louis Rémy Mignot was one of few Southerners to succeed in the competitive New York art world. During the war years, however, Mignot found himself torn between his Southern allegiances and his life in the North. In 1862, Mignot arranged an auction of forty-seven of his paintings to raise funds for passage overseas. The haunting Sunset, Winter was among these works. Mignot settled in England, never to return. He died of smallpox at the age of thirty-nine.

46 Except for the house, this landscape reminds me a bit of the Chalmette Monument Park when I was a kid, when my brother and I would play Combat! on chilly winter afternoons. We weren't usually there until sunset, though, so I'm imagining quite a bit. But the flatness and bare trees are very much what I remember.

My place was on the edge of town and adjacent to a protected wetlands area. Also saw many incredible sunsets from a local park, where I'd finish my weekday run in time to photograph the sunset over the lake. It became a bit of an obsession for me

102 This scene could be early San Luis, CO at the old Spanish mission church next to the creek. Some of the blood red sunsets there gave rise to the naming of the Sangre de Cristo mountains.

Legend has it that one of the conquistadores, mortally wounded by angry Utes (heh), saw the red glow on the mountains and uttered the dying words, "el Sangre de Cristo!"

Democratic party voter registration in Arizona and Georgia has grown since 2020. Democrats won by increasing margins in statewide elections. Believe the data, not the polls. He'll carry Arizona and Georgia and there's a good chance he'll add Florida and North Carolina!

Not a lot of places impenetrable to rabbits when my brother and I played there. Concrete roadway and asphalt parking lot, yes, and the small Washington Monument-like tower. Those are all still there, with the addition of a small visitor center, the now-empty plantation house that used to be the VC, and the removal of trees that masked the black village of Fazendeville. Which is also gone.

182 I went down to Waxahachie yesterday for the eclipse to get dead in the center of the zone. Traffic was light heading down, as it appears that many came in over the weekend. Going home took about 50% longer than normal, though.

I have seen eclipses before, but this was only the second one where I was in an ideal position. Watching and listening to the birds and insects settling down for the night and being faked out is interesting.

Nah, bro.

I see Covid and the eclipse phenoms as polar opposites.

God put a lot of beauty and wonder into the universe. I see nothing at all of people trying to observe something rare and wonderful from the hand of God like a total solar eclipse. And this effort by people was self-motivated, all voluntary.

And for the record, it was very cool. More so than I thought it might be.

Businesses around here are slowing down on hiring, even putting hiring freezes in place. Gas and food prices are climbing again.

The main road that takes you from the airport to the resort areas goes right through it. There was still a lot of damage and hollowed out housing right there.

The guy who drove our van on the Road to Hana (motion sickness city) started the trip (egged on by our fellow passengers) by espousing the "conspiracy theory" that Oprah had something to do with the fires to buy up cheap land. The locals have some bitterness, it seems.

One of those "awesome" things is the fact that the disk of the Sun and that of the Moon are almost exactly the same size. Maybe that's just how it has to be, though. If the Sun were much larger and the Moon the same apparent size, the latter would be lost against the glare, and there'd be no eclipse. (Not to mention the Earth would be too hot for life at its current orbit.)

If the Moon were so large or close (with its current mass) as to occlude the Sun every month, the Earth would be racked with terrific earthquakes and tides to the point that life would also have a hard time getting started.

I see some pretty revolting shoppers every week here. On the other hand, in the Birmingham, AL, suburbs, the stores and patrons are very nice.

The more expensive items, $3 to $5, are for things they didn't carry a few years ago, like Red Baron pizzas and Tina's burritos and chimichangas. Just about everything else is still $1.25, though.

I see some pretty revolting shoppers every week here. On the other hand, in the Birmingham, AL, suburbs, the stores and patrons are very nice.

The more expensive items, $3 to $5, are for things they didn't carry a few years ago, like Red Baron pizzas and Tina's burritos and chimichangas. Just about everything else is still $1.25, though.

DG and Family Dollar stores, here at least, are dark and forbidding inside, with tall shelves that tower over you in the narrow aisles. DT is better lit and has wider aisles. And they really do have items closer (now) to $1.00 in price; such things are rare in DG & FD stores.
