Top Story

To nobody's surprise the FCC has declined to intervene on California's plans to implement net neutrality. (Ars Technica)

The problem I always had with the FCC's push for net neutrality - which is back on the table for a vote later this month - is that the claim that the FCC even had the power to vote on such a rule is based on assumptions that would grant the agency massive control over all forms of communication in the US.

If an individual state legislature wants to fuck up internet access for their own voters, on the other hand, they can do so, subject to the First Amendment.

I'll have to read up on what California is proposing to do; it's probably bad, but probably legal.

Tech News

I've been trying to get the latest Hyte / Hololive limited edition PC cases for months without any luck. There's only one Hyte distributor in Australia and they can't get them.

I even looked into freight forwarding, but that worked out to cost as much as the cases themselves, and these are expensive cases.

Now Hyte offers freight forwarding itself, and if I order both of the cases it only adds 50% to the cost. Which is still insane, but so am I.

Then the cases will sit there for months because having spent that much money I won't have much to spare for new parts to fill them with.

I did want to buy the new Lenovo Legion Tab, but Lenovo is assisting me with my budget because that is still not available anywhere.

Do not buy the Samsung Galaxy Book4 Pro 360. (Hot Hardware)

It has a very nice 120Hz 2880x1800 OLED display, but it costs $1900, and you can get an Asus Vivobook with an almost identical OLED display for half of that.

And the Asus has upgradeable memory, while the Samsung has 16GB soldered in place.

Which if you're running Windows 11 will be fully used by the time you've booted the system and started a browser.
Speaking of the Asus Vivobook and it's beautiful OLED display... Yeah, it's still in its box.

First thought: $2000 for a bicycle? So your only question is not if it gets stolen, but if it gets stolen before you get crushed by an SUV.

Second thought: I mean, if you happened to live in a quiet country town with little traffic and lots of hills, it might be kind of nice.

Third thought: And, it turns out, illegal where I live. It has a 750W motor and the rules here set the limit at 500W.

If you're an anime person, check out "Frieren" it's an excellent anime concerning an elf who was part of a questing group that conquered the Demon King after ten years. They won, then broke up and went on their ways. The elf said she'd be back buuuuut, since elves live for several thousands of years, time is very different for her. By the time she gets back, the members of her questing group are old and feeble, dying, or dead.

She realizes she missed out on being with them and starts to retrace the path of their previous quest.

Nope, it needs to be 100%. You need to be inside the shadow fully to see anything much. Even a crescent sliver of the Sun makes it still too bright.

I stumbled on something interesting the other day. There is a strong correlation between the seasonal changes in the earth's rotation and seismic activity.

If I've got it right, seismic activity peaks right after the earth slows down a bit.

Back in '84, we had a near-total eclipse here on a morning in May. I lived, with Mrs. Wolfus No. 2 and Arizona the big red part-Coon tabby, in a double looking out across a park in the suburbs, so I had a nice view of the twilight. It freaked AZ out. The birds got all quiet, it cooled about ten degrees, and it bothered him. He would look out one window, squeak in distress, run to the other and look out, then dash back, taking time to look at me as if to say, "You're in charge of weather! DO something!"

This time I doubt we'll see much darkening or cooling, and it may rain anyway.

The temperature will drop in the shadow, the path of totality, by an average of 10F. During the 2017 event, which passed right over us, my cousin measured that, and some other things. (He's a retired meteorologist).

He noticed something about the local clouds. During the heating of the day, something was going on. The shadow and 10F temp drop stopped that process dead in it's tracks and it never recovered before sundown.

Those of you in the path will be able to see nearly all the visible planets during the eclipse. They'll be lined up in a nice row across the ecliptic.

I remember Venus popping up during the 2017 one here. That beautiful eerre Corona light, and Venus shining brightly in the middle of the day.

Any from "upper left" to lower of the eclipsed Sun, you'll see Jupiter, Mercury to the upper left, then Venus, Saturn and Mars to the lower right.

Mercury, however will be very dim, and it's phase is very low, and will have it's backside turned nearly all the way to us that day, so you might not see it too well.

I think I saw it as three miles down. Someone on X posted a video inside their home (near epicenter) of picture frames coming off the walls and small items spilling off a shelf. Quite a racket inside the house.

Drivers in the NYC area pulled off the road and traffic into the city came to a halt. First the Statue of Liberty gets hit by lightning this week, then an earthquake. Repent New Yorkers the end is near.

I recently took the first Shingrix being of an age and having had chickenpox way back when. I had nasty time with the first shot for a couple of days (plus autoimmune issues come into play for me). Apparently the reaction comes from the adjuvant added to Shingrix to make a stronger reaction. The Arexvy RSV vaxx apparently has a similar adjuvant for those thinking of taking a non-mRNA vaxx for that.

My immunologist is pretty good about telling me in advance whether to actually take a vaxx or not. He advised against the mRNA way back when during the time of Covids.

Netflix, Google (you tube), and some other streaming services were afraid that the big telecom providers would throttle services that did not have strategic profit sharing type contractual arrangements.

Google went out and built its own end user type fiber optic system in a few places.

But essentially, it was a temporary issue that did not need a fix as bandwidth of internet available to a lot of users exceeds what is needed to stream even 4k video in most places. Better compression and more extensive use of existing bandwidth along with Space X and broadband cell service have largely killed it as an active issue for consumers.

The only reason to bring it up again is to allow regulators to determine content in streaming and priorities in service by network providers.

254 I saw a total eclipse back in the 70's. One of the interesting things I saw was birds landing in trees and going to sleep like it was night time.

During the last eclipse around here (August 2017), we noticed that the insects (mostly cicadas) started making a lot of noise because they, too, thought night was falling.

257 I'm at about the point where I need to replace my five year old Vivobook, so I've been watching the laptop threads with interest - except none of the models Pixy mentions seem to be available in Canada with the specs he describes. In particular it seems to be impossible to get better than a 1080p screen. I'm wondering if Canada imposed yet another stealth bit of idiot regulation. It's bad enough that I have to have a can-fr keyboard no matter where I live (i.e. not Quebec).
