My father was an avid bird feeder while I was a kid growing up. After the Fabulous Mrs. Mis. Hum and I were married and bought our first starter home I've been feeding birds. It is a very easy hobby to get into without spending oodles of money. Bird feeders have evolved over the years from wooden units to plastic, glass, metal and composite feeders. I attempt to go as squirrel proof as humanly possible. The nice thing about bird feeding is that anyone can do it. Unless you live in a skyscraper in downtown NYC. It doesn't take a lot of effort. If you have been doing it for a number of years you probably have your feeders, feeding sites and routine down. If you are new to it or are thinking about doing it there are a number of great books out along with the YouTube Channel. There are a number of stores that have popped up over the years which cater to the avian enthusiast.Since moving from the semi-frozen tundra to the frozen tundra not only have we attracted song birds using Niger seed and Black Oil Sunflower seed we have attracted these visitors as well: ![]() Turkeys are messy and I really don't care to have them around. They eat just about anything and are not as tasty as that Butter Ball from the local store. ![]() Yes deer love the Sunflower Seed. I've moved feeders away from this station during the winter because these guys will clean out any feeder they can reach. ![]() Bears will eat Niger Seed out of a Finch Feeder. Who knew? If you are in bear country best to take your feeders down every night before dusk. This particular photo was taken at approximately 5:45AM in June. This is a homemade platform feeder for squirrels and Bluejays. This bear seems to enjoy it to. ![]() Squirrels are one of most common nuisances with feeders. However, they do provide entertainment as well. So this is my inaugural Hobby/Craft thread. And of course I'll be sharing my pastimes with you. However, the Morons and I also want to hear from you about your hobbies and/or crafts. You can reach me at petmorons at gmail dot com. New Content So underneath the feeders this winter was Sylvester the Bobcat. ![]() ![]() That wraps up this weekend's Hobby Thread. I'll be covering for Mr. J.J. Sefton until he's back in the saddle again. So if you have any bodging material you wish to submit. Please do so at petmorons at the g mail thingy dot com. Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

I've made a good deal of progress on the Truck Camper front. The DC to DC charging system has been completed and tested. The alternator is now sending around 39.5 amps at 14.4v DC to the house battery.
I can now charge my 200AH LIFPO battery with the DC-DC charger AND with the 300w solar array installed on the truck cap's roof while driving down the road. The 2K pure-sine-wave inverter is the cherry on top. Posted by: mrp at April 06, 2024 05:37 PM (rj6Yv) 11
Today's hobby... tractoring...
Making ready to deal with the "stuff" around here. Took off the FEL (front end loader) or "bucket" on the tractor and got the mower prepped to mow grass. My Kubota has a FEL with the arms attached, so it's a delicate process to let it down somewhere it can be reattached without much aggravation. Did about 4 acres. Saw a family of wood ducks, so that was cool. Posted by: Martini Farmer at April 06, 2024 05:37 PM (Q4IgG) 12

Haven't done any bird feeding for a couple of years but we want to get back into it. In the past we had best results with safflower seed and sunflower seed for the small song birds we like to attract: chickadees, titmice, gold finches and, in the winter, juncos. Plus the fun of never knowing what might show up. We've had northern flickers and, one special day, a huge pileated woodpecker. BTW, any seed that spills on the ground gets gobbled up by the mourning doves that have decided our house roof is the stylish, chic place to roost.
I do put up a cage feeder that holds suet and seed balls we get at the local Southern States. It gets the attention of the small woodpeckers and similar that cavort up and down the trees in the yard. Posted by: JTB at April 06, 2024 05:57 PM (zudum) 45

Birdfeeding.
We had 3 hummingbird feeders in the last place. It was great watching them try and dominate all three, especially at dusk and dawn when they can't see well so the interlopers get to eat their fill. We can't keep the hummingbird feeders filled here. The woodpeckers land on them and suck them dry in about an hour (yes we had 4 out and they finished all of them). Now we put out quail/dove blocks. The ground squirrels and some other type of squirrel like them; but, the quail!!! We've have 3 scattered in the yard and counted over 50 in the yard last week. We should start seeing coveys of babies in the next 2 weeks. SHTF food for sure! Posted by: AZ deplorable moron at April 06, 2024 06:00 PM (Fg/tA) 48

Just got done towing back here on the car trailer. New engine is in. Clutch linkage hooked up. Transmission installed and the floor shift is hooked up. Brand new second-hand brake master cylinder installed, and the hill holder freed up. Drive shaft installed, with one used U-joint replacing the worn-out one at the front. This qualifies as a hobby.

If I put out the bird blocks with sunflower seeds embedded the woodpeckers and curved billed thrashers peck through the block until all the sunflower seeds are gone. The blocks disappear to quickly to afford feeding those voracious peckers.

To make my tablet stand, referred above, is simple: buy a bamboo cutting board at Dollar Tree (in fact about USD$1.26), then hide glue a solid block onto the reverse (You be the judge) with clamps you clearly already have along with bamboo-compatible glue that you already have. Also, rough up the surfaces with sandpaper you have already.
Then, use Forstner bits with depth gauges in your drill press (You don't have that? What are you, an Eskimo?) to drill halfway into the bamboo, then wet both dowels and sockets (you have water, right?) to glue them properly. See? Easy Peasy. Posted by: LenNeal. at April 06, 2024 06:07 PM (43xH1) 64

Learned a new, or at least better, technique for my pencil sketches. I knew various types of erasers could help create highlights and define areas as well as clean up stray lines. I saw a video about using a small electric eraser to do highlights. It uses the white vinyl erasers and comes in two sizes for larger areas or small sections like hair or whiskers. To my surprise it works better than hand held erasers for those purposes. Even just experimenting with it has been fun.

We have two feeders... a tube and a sock. The tube is your typical bird feeder with 4 perches. The "sock" is a exactly what is sounds like.. a sock for thistle seed for finches. Here, those finches are gold, blue and green. And, yea, once word gets out the birds rape the shit out of them in a day. Except for the sock. That lasts for a few days. Francis of Assisi is pleased. AOP, what is a hill holder?
Posted by: Ronster at April 06, 2024 06:07 PM (1g7kI) AKA "No-Rol unit". It is a gravity-operated check valve in the brake hydraulic line. A steel ball rolls to and fro inside a housing, and when rolls all the way back, it seats on a rubber ring and traps hydraulic pressure in the line going to the rear brakes, thus holding the rear brakes on until the ball is lifted off the seat by a cage which is connected to the clutch pedal. Eliminates the need to heel&toe the brake and throttle when starting out from stop on an upgrade. Subaru used a similar system for years. Sort of related to using erasers in comment 78. I learned about using a stylus to indent the paper enough to show contours when a pencil is rubbed over it. The styluses come with different size tips. It's a great, sometimes subtle, way to create texture in a sketch.

I bought a new pipe about a week ago: an Orlik, a long-time English brand. Not sure they are still around. It's what the company called a "Large Chimney," a straight billiard with a slightly taller bowl than the usual. Lovely grain, and it's about 45 years old or so. This morning I loaded and puffed an English tobacco, Peterson's Early Morning Pipe. The Orlik is a good smoker and a very handsome piece of briar.

I guess the thing I don't like about technology people is how it is propelled ultimately by cosmology, religion, and/or philosophy. Any innovation will not be used unless it is matched with a propulsive Thought that can accept it.

Still have the two Robyn SB-510D's on the bench. The audio chip I needed for one showed up this week so I got that installed. I did quickly check that it works on receive and transmit. Which means I now have two nominally "working" radios with bad ribbon cables that could cause them to be "broken" again at any time. Still waiting on the reverse polarity protection diode. I found some originals, they're just taking their sweet time getting here.
I've mostly written the Arduino code I intend to use. I need to go through and figure out which pins will connect to what. I also need to map out the channel display pins. Otherwise instead of, say, "36" you might see "FU". I also have to figure out how to mount all the new bits in the radios. Arduino, two MCP23017's, probably some resistors, and some interconnect cabling. Don't want all that just flopping around and shorting out to stuff. It's completely transparent in its operation'
I'm still dealing with a NASA guy who thinks his engineering technology is self-evident' I will apologize for being rude and crude to you but it has to do with this exact problem. This goes beyond 'hobbies' which most physics began as. You are retired, this other guy is not. But your engineering is not transparent or obvious to others who are not you. To train service ability to others it takes a sales effort which most engineers find repellent. To you, it is obvious. You can do it. But in making things happen it is not one person that can do it, it is mass-producing. If one cannot reproduce knowledge to a lowest-common-denominator, then one's knowledge is occult; one is an occultist. If that occultism is lost, then all is lost. The knowledge and wisdom is vanished and gone. Hence, Greek mechanisms. And then all that knowledge is lost for millennia. Posted by: LenNeal at April 06, 2024 06:39 PM (43xH1) 117

They are from Taiwan, have that micro-serration but on both sides of the blade, and I am still using all of them and they are still just as useful as 25 years ago. The only knives I really feel anything about are really good, back-swept paring knives. I learned it from my mother who would not have a knife that was too sharp as she would pare into her thumb.
But, she also hand-sewed so her thumbs were pure callous. She could stick a needle 1/4 inch into either of her thumbs and not hit flesh. She didn't want anything TOO sharp she wanted a knife sharp enough to cut an apple, etc, into whichever thumb (she was ambidextrous). When it comes to knife sharpening I like the diamond impregnated steel 'stones' I got from Pinewood Forge. Del makes my favorite whittling knives and he uses them. I use them for wood carving as well as kitchen knives. It was worth the effort to get the touch. I practiced on cheap second hand store blades until I got it right. I keep a good steel for stropping hanging in the kitchen. I use it every time after I wash the knife. Don't have to use the stones very often as the steel keeps the edge fresh.

I read "Black Beauty" years ago but what stuck with me was how different people treated their horses, much like people treat their vehicles today. Some horses were work trucks, or tractors, or daily drivers for the carriage, or race cars, or just pulling a trolly. Some people would take very good care of their horses and maintain them like a fine automobile, others would treat their horses terribly, neglect maintenance, and treat them like an appliance.

Ben Had, Senior class went on an outing to a dude ranch or some such. I assumed all the horses were green bay packer horses. Most of the class went off by themselves. I wanted to go off by myself in a different direction. Horse did not like that idea, and after a bit we were headed back to the rest of the horses at what seemed to me at a very high rate of speed. Scared the crap out of me. That was the end of my solo trip.

I think most horses have a good sense of the people around them. If they think they can trust you or know you're in charge, they defer. If you're angry, stressed, or treat them poorly, they get skiddish. If you're weak or not confident, they take over (for better or worse).
I've never worked with purely raw and untamed animals. Might be different story there. Posted by: TRex at April 06, 2024 07:51 PM (IQ6Gq) 210
