Gun Thread: Easter Edition!

hare in scope 033124 scaled.jpg
There's a hare in my scope!

Howdy, Y'all! Welcome to the wondrously fabulous Gun Thread! As always, I want to thank all of our regulars for being here week in and week out, and also offer a bigly Gun Thread welcome to any newcomers who may be joining us tonight. Howdy and thank you for stopping by! I hope you find our wacky conversation on the subject of guns 'n shooting both enjoyable and informative. You are always welcome to lurk in the shadows of shame, but I'd like to invite you to jump into the conversation, say howdy, and tell us what kind of shooting you like to do!

Holy Jumping Shitballs! How in the ever-loving Hell did it get to be Easter Sunday? Happy Easter! Once again, we go deep into the Gun Thread photo vault and dust off the hare in scope pic. I hope the day is a special one for you and you get to bite the head off of lots of chocolate bunnies!

With that, step into the dojo and let's get to the gun stuff below, shall we?

******

Q: Weasel, must we yet again suffer through your endless talk about fundamentals?
A: Yes. Yes we must.

OK! So last week we covered two basic shooting stances, the Isosceles and Weaver, and the reasons why they form the basis of a solid platform. In a nutshell, wobbly shit is bad in stances just like it's bad in a rifle setup. So weight forward with knees and elbows ever-so-slightly bent. Think aggressive stance. You do not want to be all rigid and dorky and unable to correctly absorb recoil as the gun is fired. You want your stance to be somewhat relaxed allowing you to return everything to the same starting position, or your natural point of aim after each shot. Somewhat relaxed doesn't mean all loose and floppy, but flexible enough to absorb recoil, and absolutely not push you back on your heels.

'Kay? We good on stance? It has to be practiced until it becomes natural with muscle memory. For those of you without muscles, try and make do as best you can.

Today lets take a peek at a proper grip. A proper grip varies slightly depending on what you are shooting, a revolver or a pistol, but the key takeaway here is you want a firm (but not ridiculous) hold on the gun with as much contact and support between the hand and gun as possible.

Here's a guy with an extra big watch discussing stance and grip.

Here's a medium size watch guy with pistol grip techniques. This is really good.

Here is a super-duper competitive shooter, who is strangely watchless, with another take on grip. Does his method make sense for the casual range shooter?

And finally, here's our pal "Jer" Miculek with tips on revolver grip.

You may notice there is some slightly contradictory information among the four, which only means you need to go to the range and find out what works the best for you. If you are not achieving repeatable results, consider tweaking your grip. The best way to do that, in Weasel's opinion, is to have a plan when you go to the range as you sort out what is most effective for you. All the big watch wearing tactical badass mo-fo's in the world can give you tips, but you need to take them to the range and develop a useful and practical application for yourself.

Gun Thread Homework Assignment

033124 homework scaled.jpg

Listen up, all y'all. I think this is important. I spend a lot of time harping on the technical aspects of shooting but not always so much on the mental aspect. While I am absolutely a proponent of carrying a firearm for self-defense, I also believe with that decision comes a great deal of responsibility. In my opinion, having a firearm can in fact limit your options in the event of an altercation. The minute a gun comes out, you are one step closer to taking the fateful step of pulling the trigger, and it becomes harder to de-escalate a situation by resorting to a simple fist-fight or poo-flinging, for example. How many times have you run these sorts of scenarios through your head? What would it take to cause you to un-holster or otherwise deploy a handgun and up the ante in a conflict?

What about brandishing? Good idea or not? Partial brandishing? Pseudo-brandishing? Concealed brandishing?

I am going to ask you to watch this 19 minute video sometime this week, and return next Sunday prepared to discuss your thoughts. Please don't comment on it tonight in order to give everyone who is interested a chance to watch and participate in the conversation. You will have a week to think about your reaction when in real life the decisions are being made in seconds.

The incident involves two drivers in the chaotic environment of an airport. What would normally result in an exchange of fingers becomes a little more complicated, as you will see.

Discussion Points
Was it smart for gun-guy to do what he did? If not, what would have been a better reaction? How about the cops - was their handling of the matter justified and appropriate? What about cab driver guy - how significant a part did his actions play and did the actions warrant gun guy's response? Finally, given the contradictory accounts which one do you believe?

Think about it and let's discuss next week.

Guns of the Horde

Our pal scampydog shares a very nice pair of Winchester Model 71’s! Weasel are jealous!

033124 scampydog 71 a scaled.jpg

033124 scampydog 71b scaled.jpg

Both dad and I had discussed the 71's for years. Was fortunate to pick one up at auction and took it out west as a permanent on loan gift for him. Told him to keep it and shoot it as long as he wished. He was an avid reloader and I knew he would run some rounds through it. Which he did. In typical dad form, my next trip out west a couple years later, dear 'ol dad put one over on junior. Slow walked me into his treasure room and off-handedly said, "Oh I've got one you should have a look at." Which of course was his own Model 71. I do miss his humor and the rhythm of him putting one over on me. He would have been a fine Moron. Ammo is pretty much unavailable and reliant on reloads. Comparison pic of 30.06 vs .348. Kicks about as one would expect.

Happy Easter and happy shooting.

Cigar of the Week

033124 Rhomb Fume dAmour 4 scaled.jpg

This week our pal rhomboid scores again with this excellent review of the Illusione Fume D'Amour

llusione is a brand that had made its mark for, among other things, blending cigars with little or no ligero leaf, generally the strongest leaves of the tobacco plant, which are near the top and thus get more sun exposure. This can produce very mild yet flavorful cigars. The Fume D'Amour is one of these. It is a Nicaraguan puro, with corojo and criollo leaf and emphasizing lower "primings", or leaves lower on the plant, according to the company. Result is a very smooth and mild cigar that for me delivered a distinct tobacco sweetness throughout (even on the finish, and after). Other notes were present - some nuttiness, some sweet wood. Construction is good, draw is easy, burn line required only a few touch-ups (I like to keep the line even). For those who like flavor and complexity in a milder package, the Fume D'Amour is worth a try. Available online in the $7-8 range.

Excellent as always, rhomboid! Thank you!

******

Here are some different online cigar vendors. You will find they not only carry different brands and different lines from those brands, but also varying selections of vitolas (sizes/shapes) of given lines. It's good to have options, especially if you're looking for a specific cigar.

Cigarsinternational.com
Cigarpage.com
Famous-smoke.com
Cigarsdaily.com
Neptunecigar.com
Smallbatchcigar.com
Bobalu Cigar Company
Cigarbid.com
Nicks Cigar World New!

A note about sources. The brick & mortar/online divide exists with cigars, as with guns, and most consumer products, with respect to price. As with guns - since both are "persecuted industries", basically - I make a conscious effort to source at least some of my cigars from my local store(s). It's a small thing, but the brick & mortar segment for both guns and tobacco are precious, and worth supporting where you can. And if you're lucky enough to have a good cigar store/lounge available, they're often a good social event with many dangerous people of the sort who own scary gunz, or read smart military blogs like this one. -rhomboid

Anyone have others to include? Perhaps a small local roller who makes a cigar you like? Send me your recommendation and a link to the site!

Action is very slick and it is a pleasure to shoot even with the umph of the 8mm. The serial number is a "TR" which puts it as a Romanian contract rifle around 1940 I believe. Posted by: Grateful at March 31, 2024 07:25 PM (IQ6Gq)

MSRP just like everywhere. One of the downsides of Sig. Mags are expensive ~$50 no matter the gun. There are a few aftermarket mags available but usually not much cheaper and then you have to pay shipping so you end up about .... $50/mag.

We could save a little by buying at SEG as members get like a 5% discount...

105 39 Took my Vz24 out to check zero and see the groups at 100 yards with PPU 198 gr FMJ BT PPU. Groups fine and is about a 3-4 inch gun with the iron sights. Action is very slick and it is a pleasure to shoot even with the umph of the 8mm. The serial number is a "TR" which puts it as a Romanian contract rifle around 1940 I believe. Nothing more relaxing than shooting an old bolt gun and watching her perform as she should.

Thanks for the range report. VZ24's tend to be different than other Mausers due to the rather different rifling used by the Czechs than by everyone else. They prefer FMJs and full house loads while other Mausers are quite happy with cast bullets.

118 Came up with an interesting problem. I got the annual birthday price offer from MidwayUSA. Must have had to supply DOB for an earlier purchase, so they know. I hate to pass up a bargain so tried to find something firearm related that I needed. (I know, 'need' isn't a factor.) Guess what. I couldn't come up with anything. Yet. Reloading tools or components? Nope. Black powder gear like caps or powder? I have plenty. Bullet molds? No. Ammo? Not really since I spent several years building up supplies during sales, swap meets and bulk offers. It's an odd dilemma.

The one thing that caught my eye was a Pietta 1861 Colt cap and ball revolver. I have other 36 caliber C and B guns so I was able to resist. Especially when I saw the price. Holy shit balls, to quote Weasel. Prices have really gone up on these by 100 bucks and more and did so rapidly. My current collection is looking better and better.

It's amusing in an odd way.

I cannot rack the slide on my Glock 19 or any of my husband's guns.im thinking that maybe adrenaline in a crisis situation would enable me to function but I don't want to bet my life on that. Husband has suggested a S&W 38 J frame revolver. That was my first ever gun and I shot very well with it, but not for a prolonged time on the range. My hands start swelling after a while. I don't know of any other gun that would work. I just want a gun I can use without pain and one that I can trust.

Smith & Wesson has a couple of different "EZ" models that are designed for low racking force. I haven't personally used any of them so that's all I know. Also, there are a couple of .380s that use the Beretta "tip-up" design so you never have to rack the slide at all to load or unload. All that said, yeah, I like the J frames.

146 have a question. I have significant arthritis in my hands and wrists. My normal edc is a Sig p238 because I can rack the slide. But just barely.
Posted by: Megthered at March 31, 2024 08:08 PM

The S&W EZ and a couple of Walthers are what I recommend for racking issues (which are more common than many might suppose).

As far a racking itself, have you tried pulling the slide while simultaneously pushing the grip/frame? Two arms are better than one (as Michelle Fields would vigorously attest).

Other ideas are the J-Frame and one of the Beretta tip ups mentioned.

A couple of options - S&W M&P 2.0 9mm EZ - specifically designed to be "EZ" to operate.

Also, as weasel has suggested, changing the recoil spring. sra blaster was having a hard time racking the slide on a P226 so I swapped out the 16lb spring for a 14lb spring and it made all the difference in the world.

One consideration is to go old school and buy a semi automatic with a hammer. One can cock the hammer to ease in racking the slide. P series Sigs and Smith Third Generation are good solid buys for this method as well as 1911's of various makes.

The EZ line from Smith are about as friendly as a new semi auto firearm is to rack and the push pull method described above makes it easier to rack striker fired pistols.

Advice I passed to my BNL and he actually followed it and was glad: if arthritis is an issue and you've got revolver experience, why not return to it? Consider your threat environment. Do you foresee yourself in a
drawn out gun battle? Probably not so you're probably not shooting more than three or four times.
Alternately, drop down in caliber. Kinetic energies aside, getting hit by a .22 or .25 is going to get the attention of a bad guy as much as by a 9mm or .45.
Sure, size matters, but so also does noise and shock.

Taurus 327 is all steel and when shooting 32 short (or long) has very little recoil. 32 H&R a bit more (or lot more with some Buffalo Bore), and 327 isn't much more pleasant than 357 in a full size revolver. But, point is, you can really dial it down in recoil, even use 320 acp if that's all you gots.

207 205 Alternately, drop down in caliber. Kinetic energies aside, getting hit by a .22 or .25 is going to get the attention of a bad guy as much as by a 9mm or .45.
Sure, size matters, but so also does noise and shock.

A .380 that you'll actually carry beats the .45 that you leave at home. Modern self-defense ammo like Hornady Critical Defense or Corbons will narrow the gap between .380 and 9mm quite a bit.

I have three personal carry weapons (.22, .380, and 9mm) and what I choose depends on where I'm going, and, frankly, what I am wearing. Being over 29, comfort
is a thing ya know. You are correct, what the other guy sees is a gun. And he/she hears a big noise. Any hit is going to hurt. He/she runs. You survive. Mission accomplished.

Posted by: Megthered at March 31, 2024 08:08 PM

233 8 Looking forward to watching the space shuttle landing video. We saw a landing once at Edwards Air Force base. The thing fell out of the sky. It barely looked like it was flying or gliding. At least an F-14 pilot could touch and go and go around for another attempt.
Posted by: TRex at March 31, 2024 07:10 PM (IQ6Gq)

...'cause all the Shuttle is doing at that point is gliding.

I remember on July 25, 1999, when the Columbia did a night re-entry. I had two minutes warning right about 2200 CDT and I quickly got dressed and ran out to a main street which allowed a clear view north. I waited about a minute and then I saw a fireball streaking across the sky, with the occasional spark flying off it. The fire trail hung in the sky for a good 10 minutes before fading out. At that point, if memory serves, it landed at Cape Canaveral 10 minutes later.

Posted by: Catch Thirty-Thr33 at March 31, 2024 09:00 PM (8sMut)

234 That shuttle vs F-14 (my fav F-xx) was just an excuse for the guy to tell us he's flown the Shuttle simulator. Where was the corresponding details of landing an F-14? Also why compare a Shuttle to a carrier landing? A runway would be a more comparable choice.
My opinion.

Watches, shuttle operations, pants, a pita bread ache, cigars, eclipse, carrier operations, a small Kimber club (but with potential to grow by one), an inbound Highway Patrolman and much more. Y'all are morons (in the best sense). Let's do this again sometime.

IIRC, the max airspeed of the combination was something on the order of 350 mph.

Awhile back, one of the cobs shared a collection of accounts of firearms and bear attacks. .44 Magnum got mentioned a lot. But there were some accounts of bears taken down by a .22. One I remember was an extremely well placed shot directly in the eye. Other cases took many shots and the bear took a long time to die.

Then there was one where the husband tried to scare the bear with a .22, left to go for help (*taking the pistol with him*) and the bear came back and killed the wife.

Got to watch test flights of the original 747 at the airport in Ellensburg where Boeing would do much of their flight testing. They had a 12 foot section of a 4x4 bolted to the bottom of the fuselage under the tail. For short field testing. Pretty cool

Wow. Would love to know how close to limit they pushed it. Likely had a big margin of safety given the cargo, but can't add unlimited weight for extra strength.

296 Funny (to me) story relating to missing digits.

When I was traveling all over competing, I would take a bright teal YETI cooler for snacks and such. At some point, I saw a sticker (Amazon) that read HUMAN ORGAN FOR TRANSPLANT and naturally put it on the cooler. I would get a LOT of funny looks going in and out of hotels with it and every once in a while people would work up the nerve to ask what it was. I got into the habit of telling them it was a toe.

Up in N. Central.Washington State is the town of Omak. In a cabin up on a local.ranch was an old gal who'd been living there since the '30s. (This was a few years ago). Her husband had died and she lived alone. Her only weapon was a .22 rifle. She had killed several.bears with it. She waited until they were on the porch. "Can't miss then!"

For many reasons I sometimes wish I'd been born earlier. I would like to have watched the moon landing. I have seen the Saturn V they have in Huntsville, which is still rather thrilling just sitting there doing nothing.

322 Spring, being sprung.

I shall endeavor to get the '03-A3 FrankenRifle out to the range, this week.

It is the total opposite of a "numbers matching" rifle. 'Bout every part other than the barreled receiver was recovered from Salvage Bins, and assembled by force.

That said, it did though come through the gunsmithing approval process with flying colors, so, we shall see.
