  • The man who saved the world: Andres Freund noticed that SSH logins - used by every server in the world - were taking half a second longer than they should. (Ars Technica)

He was curious so he poked at it a bit and found the equivalent of the demon core being added for free to every school lunch in the world.

In essence, had this been done with more care and not caught before it was added to production releases of Linux, a state actor - this is almost certainly the work of some place like China or North Korea - could have had access to everything, everywhere.

You might be at AWS and have all your services behind a VPN, but that wouldn't help you at all because they'd just need to hack AWS first.

All the development for this hack was done in public, either by a developer who spent a lot of time building up trust by writing useful code, or by hacking that developer's GitHub account.

Expect GitHub to force 2FA on all users in short order, even if that wouldn't have prevented this incident. Every warning sign has a story behind it, and Andres is the Harry Daghlian and Louis Slotin of the age, except that he didn't die of radiation poisoning.

  • However, some not-really-production releases of Linux were impacted. (CyberKendra)

Fedora Rawhide and Kali Linux were affected for the past three days. Arch Linux has been affected for five weeks, and Debian's unstable release seems to be the worst hit, with the new packages added eight weeks ago.

Fedora 40 Beta might be affected if you set up the test library versions as well as the regular beta libraries.

AWS Linux is not affected, nor are stable releases like Ubuntu LTS or RedHat Enterprise Linux.

Read up on the Demon Core and physicist Louis Slotin. Fermi described Slotin as "cowboy", and said he was gonna kill his fool self one of these days. He indeed did.

Slotin was doing a criticality experiment, known as "tickling the dragon's tail" ('cause that's what is was really like). He was using a screwdriver to lower a reflector and bring the core as close to critical as he could without getting there.

His screwdriver slipped. Core went critical, burst of radiation and heat. He reached a lethal dose instantly. He was dead, Jim, just a matter of time.

When Homeland Security raided Puffy’s properties it is reported the first thing they did was turn off his surveillance and recover all of his footage. It is also reported that the Homeland Security was searching for and confiscated electronic devices in addition to reporting a camera in every room of the mansion.

These facts in addition to Lil Rod’s recent sex traffic lawsuit against Diddy stated that Diddy kept cameras in every room of his house to blackmail participants of his parties.

Apparently that was due to the Mayday the ship's pilot or captain issued before the impact. The bridge cops blocked off the span and prevented vehicles from driving onto it from either end.

It's going to be about 80F high for Easter Sunday here in the Greenville, SC area. This breaks the "usual" rule of a cold snap during Easter. Of course, forecast is another cold snap mid to late next week.

My cousin, the retired meteorologist, explained to me this "always cold on Easter" thing of some local legend. It's confirmation bias. More often than not, it happens. Temperatures are a matter of probability. The date of Easter is also a probability thing. Well, it's quite deterministic, but if you look at the distribution of Easter dates, you can construct a probability distributions of dates of Easter.

About 25% will occur in March. Rest are in April. Now line that Easter occurence date with the temperature/last frost probabilities.

You'll see there is high probability it will be cold on Easter. Sometime it won't be, but you don't remember that. This time for example, we've got an earlish Easter. A little warm snap. But there will be cold snap after, per 10 day forecasts (which are fairly accurate). We don't remember the cold snaps after Easter.

As some of you have probably gathered, I'm a time nut. I must keep my systems here synced to NIST/NTP time to within 50ms. You can do that with Windows 10/11 (after a certain version, earlier versions of Windows, no better than 1 - 2s).

Linux can do much better. I've got "chronyc" running own my little Linksys router, running OpenWRT. Best time syncing program there is. These routers serve all NTP time on my local network .Currently, the report they are within 5ms of NTP time.

Now, against, that I've got an old Casio watch, a DW-5600E model, that can keep time, on average per that to within 3s per month.

Some of the later Casios, the "atomic time" signal ones, can't do that running on their own. They'll get out of sync by 2 or 3 seconds in a week or two without syncing with Ft. Collins.

120 Good morning everyone. Thank you Pixy Misa.

Today is Holy Saturday

On Holy Saturday the Church mourns in prayer and fasting, meditating on Christ’s Passion and Death. There is no Mass during the day as Jesus is still in the tomb. On this day Jesus descended triumphantly into Hades and brought salvation to the righteous souls held captive there who awaited their promised Messiah, as recited in the Apostle’s Creed. On the night of Holy Saturday the Church celebrates the Vigil of Easter Sunday, the celebration of Christ’s resurrection from the tomb, the traditional time when the Sacraments of Initiation are given to new members of the Church.

Three friends are joining the Church today at the vigil. Coupled with one of my granddaughters being baptized well - what a great weekend.

Look up John Harrison. He is the Greatest Horologist of All Time (so far). He solved the longitude problem (may not have been properly fully credited, it's a long story).

Anyway, over 200 years ago, maybe closer to 300 now, he claimed he had a design for a pendulum clock that could time to within 1s per 100 days. They thought he was crazy, and the old man had done lost his mind. I mean, he did crazy shit, threw out all the current design principle of the day.

Now, search on the "Burgess Clock B", a realization of Harrison's design there. It is indeed the most accurate pendulum clock swinging in free air (must so free air caveat) every created to date.

Extensive tests at the Royal Observatory showed the Burgess Clock B kept time to within 5/8s in 100 days.

The crazy old mad clockmaker knew what he was talking about.

Now, in creating the Burgess Clock B (this is 'B', the second after 'A'), they used modern materials and modern machining techniques. It was Harrison's design, but done with modern precision and materials.

The question is could is design have been realized 200 years ago using what was available at the time? Probably not, but it still would've been the most accurate pendulum clock at the time.

My car insurance went up about 20%. My theory is that all the invaders that can't read and have not been taught how to properly drive are having lots of accidents. And they have no insurance.

On the plus side, my health insurance was only up 22% year over year.

187 104 What gets me about the xz bug is that this was found by a non-security researcher on a whim out of random amazing luck. What backdoor may be in some other key but overlooked system of Linux that no one has investigated, maybe for years?
Posted by: OL
========
The sad truth is no system is truly secure if it communicates with the outside world. That goes for Apple, Windoze, AIX, Android, iOS, etc.

Second, there is no difference between 'backdoors' and 'vulnerabilities'. From a user standpoint, it matters little if hackers intentionally inserted malicious code directly versus hackers relying on bad code to enter a user's computer maliciously. Microsoft and Apple, among others, often drag their feet on fixing vulnerabilities because it breaks other things in their system. The disadvantage that Linux has is that it relies on a lot of 'free' labor but the code is more transparent. The Apple and Microsoft rely on relatively obscure codebases but at the same time that can delay recognition of a vulnerability.

So, basically like any other criminal activity, you take precautions as much as possible. Encryption, safe computing, and so on.

Golden oldie there. But ultimately, security in software land is not really different than that of your home. Let untrusted individuals into your home, more downside risk on security so a wise person limits that access to the home.

So the caterwauling about the latest security breach is amusing in a sense because no one can write or understand all the code involved in a modern computer regardless of source and even if you could, once you communicate with any other device, then your system can be compromised because there is no way to verify that other machines are not compromised themselves.

The main benefit to open source is that when a breach is found; it can be addressed more quickly. The benefit to a closed system is that you hope that any vulnerabilities will be rapidly fixed by the company to protect their rep and business.

Well, and the law permits one certain discretion in repelling invasions of the home in meatspace that you cannot do in cyberspace legally.

Self defense in cyberspace is an interesting topic but undeveloped as far as law is concerned. Thanks for bringing that nugget of realization to the forefront. Might want to dig into that to do a little research.

227 The analysis of security, either data or physical comes down to what the owner believes is the value of either is.

The homeless guy with a vicious dog and a shopping cart full of "stuff" believes his "stuff" to be valuable (to him.) The suburban wine mom may have a nice home with "stuff" and has a Ring doorbell and security system that she never sets. Because her transgender kid can't figure out how to use the alarm system. She places more value on her kid... which is acceptable but negates the other systems in place to secure her "stuff."

The same sort of mindset is present in most modern IT security systems. Easy to use because of convenience or difficult to use because of the nature of the data.

230 I'd be skeptical of a >40% performance jump for Zen 5. At least according to what Moore's Law is Dead is finding, Zen 5 meets AMD's expectations but is not going to be a quantum leap over Zen 4. I think he's seeing more a 30% improvement, which is still very nice, but I'm concerned the hype train has gotten loose again and is going to turn a good product into a perceived failure simply because everyone had irrational expectations.

I almost wonder how much of the absurd AMD hype is their competition pushing ludicrous numbers just so AMD can look silly at launch. I mean, if Zen 5 'disappoints' by only being a 30% bump after everyone got spun up on 2x And a Free Kitten!!1!1!1 I wonder if an on time Arrow Lake might end up looking better than it really ends up in comparison?

232 We got three B&N HD+ 9" tablets back in the day. Fantastic devices for families with little kids. All three still work.

However, the Nook's OS is prone to freezing occasionally, which is really annoying, and which requires a factory reset to fix. Without being able to log into one's account, well, redownloading won't be an option. Furthermore, in the early days, only Nook apps were able to be downloaded. So... even if one is able to redownload the books on a different device (which is kind of pointless for the interactive kids' books), the apps are just gone.

Oh, and the other thing? B&N seems to get rid of their purchase history after 18 months. I've had ebooks disappear after being on my device a long time, but because they were digital, I have no record of purchasing the book, so customer service can't help. That being said, the Nook HD+ is still a great e-reader, and it's got a photo gallery app built in that is very, very basic, but works decently well for a photo album that even kids can use.
