22 I *almost* like this. I like the scene. I like the overall subject. I like the composition. There's just not enough, somehow. It's too dim. It seems like there's much more there, just waiting to break free.

Maybe it's filthy and if it were skillfully restored, it would be what it should have been. I dunno.

I didn't know that the correct word for when a moving vessel hits a stationary object is not "collision" but rather "allision," which has a Latin root (allisio) and means "to strike."

"Collision," however, comes from the French which comes from the late Latin, which comes from the root Latin. Collide had a much longer journey through language than allide.

Tying things back to the bridge collapse, however...8 men hit the 47F water at 130AM. They were from Guatemala, Honduras, and Mexico. They were in their 30s an early 40s. They were on the bridge doing road deck repairs. Six are still missing. All were married. They have kids. They came here for a better life.

And yet all we ever hear about immigrants is slams and insults. Generated by youknowwho...

heart breaking. and the one who refused aid might be here with out a green card. hope he is ok and i feel so badly for them and their families!

I so hope they saved themselves and left the scene as quickly as they could for personal reasons. That would mean there is hope they are still alive, even though it would affirm that they didn’t trust our system.

Very few. There are some municipalities with bad water, and some bad wells. It does happen, but it's pretty unusual. Most of the American water and sewage (sanitation) system - urban or rural - is the envy of the world.

It takes a monumental amount of energy, infrastructure and effort to achieve and maintain it. Nobody does it better for now. The climate fascists and corrupt incompetents are working on that superiority, though, and will bring it down to the mean ASAP.

What makes the image for me is the pose of the woman. It is perfect for capturing the effort it takes to fill and carry a bucket of water along with probably a lot of other chores. The way she leans against the wall is indicative. And I like the way the bit of landscape in the distance on the left side peeks through. Makes me think of the style used in the Mona Lisa and other paintings from that era.

It will screw up Baltimore and probably coal shipments but our road and rail nexus is more than capable of diverting around the failure of a single part of the node.

It is in the interests of Baltimore and our idiot fedgov to make out that the damages are far worse than they are so they can muster support for a billions of dollars boondoggle that won't actually fix the bridge until years later.

You will see a beautiful 1920's Italianesque mansion surrounded by 3-bedroom 1950's clapboard houses. Wandering blacks talking to themselves seem common. Really amazing disparity of construction techniques and materials. Methinks they need to unleash the dozers and improve the city. Back in the day (late 70s/early 80s) Richmond had a choice on its future. To have the growth and renewal they could have expanded Richmond's airport to me meet international standards. They decided to wave off and Charlotte scooped the rewards instead. Its really too bad. Richmond has some remarkable bones.

Not a specialist in intl law but navigated around it. Basically, treaties signed by parties are the alleged bedrock of international law, then there is the penumbra of coverage to non-signatories based on the number of countries ratifying a treaty which creates a customary intl law, and last is the proceedings of various international organizations such as OAS, UN, etc. and their official organs such as the International Court of Justice or International Criminal Court.

In real terms, international law, like domestic law, rely on the ability of states to act to enforce the law and the will to do so. Otherwise, pretty much a dead letter such as the Philippine victory at the ICJ over China regarding islands and economic zone in the S. China Sea.

Most of "public health" comes down to four things:
1. Keep the water clean
2. Take the shit away, and keep it out of the water
3. Keep the food clean
4. Take the trash away, and keep it out of the streets

Those four things are almost certainly responsible for more improvement in general health and longevity than the medical system. Those four things are also *very* hard to achieve, and very expensive.

And what makes those four things possible is under attack by the progs. It takes gobs of energy, and the progs are anti-energy. It takes lots of barriers and containment vessels, and the progs are anti-plastic. Single-use plastics are vital part of the public health chain.

I'd say it has pretty serious regional impacts. HAZMAT transportation through Maryland via the I-95 / US-1 corridor will need a different route. Either they take I-695 (Baltimore Beltway) in the opposite direction to get around the city, or they detour Baltimore completely via US-50 / US-301 and the Chesapeake Bay Bridge.
THe opposite direction on the Baltimore Beltway is already a clusterf*ck of traffic. Add in the local commuters who will spill onto it because of the increased traffic on the 2 harbor tunnels, and it will make that route even more miserable.

335 I always felt I had more control of the car with a stick. Didn't like them at a red light on a steep hill, though. Especially when the car behind is just inches away.

When you see them coming up behind you, ease off the brake a bit so that they see you rolling backwards. Often, but not always, they'll take the hint and leave you some room. It even works with an automatic if you just click it up to neutral for a second.

343 > There are 5 or 6 other ports up and down the east coast. Plus ones in Canada. They all have capacity to absorb the extra traffic.
___________

Yes, and no.

The ports have to be equipped with the proper loading/unloading cranes and other equipment for the type of ships they expect to service.

For example; Baltimore is one of the larger ports of entry for Mercedes Benz and BMW vehicles. Both manufacturers have huge receiving centers for those. And the infrastructure to get those cars to various dealers depending on who ordered what. Another port cannot simply fill that void.

I believe this will cause some significant disruptions for certain things. That's the reason I would like to know what is on the ships that cannot now dock in Baltimore.

I am not one who refuses to consider the possibility of the government of Israel being in error however...

The Geneva Convention requires both sides to adhere to the rules, like declaring war, and wearing uniforms. Rules Hamas eschews. Hamas does not have any mechanism to differentiate between combatants and non-combatants. Hamas, the elected government of Gaza.

Presumably, any Gazans who approached the IDF - possibly nude to make it harder to hide weapons - slowly and in a non-threatening manner in an effort to surrender and then claim to be civilian, would not be slain out of hand.

It is certain that they are unaware that the GC only protects signatories to the GC who adhere to it's restrictions.

I don't know if Israel is a signatory but I'm pretty sure Gaza (or Hamas) aren't.

Not with the coal shipping infrastructure. Almost all the coal the the Germans still burn goes through Port of Baltimore. It has a huge coal facility. One of the largest in the US.

#241 and governments et alia using civilians as human shields are committing a war crime and are to be held responsible for resulting civilian deaths and not the attackers, who always have a right to self-defence against enemy attacks launched upon them from civilian sites/areas.

Non-state actors are allowed but they have to follow the Conventions themselves, wear uniforms [even if it's just an armband-brassard], keep separate from civilians, have a chain of command responsible for them, and a few other things.

No Boer farmers doing a raid and then returning to their farms; no franc-tireurs acting similarly; no Greek civilians killing German paratroopers just as they hit the drop-zone, unarmed, to avoid retaliation upon civilian populations/towns.
