7 On the ONT, Miklos asked if I had red beans and rice last night. There is a generations-long tradition here of having that on Monday, because housewives did laundry on that day, and they needed something that could cook by itself all day long while they did those chores. Unfortunately I did not grow up with that tradition, so when I do have that dish or a reasonable facsimile thereof, it could happen any day.

Last night was close: chicken and sausage gumbo, which has some rice in it. I supercharged it with some canned chicken grilled in the pan with chili powder and paprika!

It's one of 3 major crossings of the Baltimore Harbor. A lot of trucks which are prohibited for various reasons from the I-95 / I-895 tunnels used the Key Bridge. It's right near a lot of shipping and industrial facilities.

142 During a media briefing, Baltimore City Fire Chief James Wallace said crews received several calls of multiple people in the water and portions of the Key Bridge collapsed. So far, rescue crews pulled two people from the water. One refused treatment. The other was taken to the hospital in serious condition.

Wallace said he didn't know how many vehicles were on the bridge when it collapsed. But he did say sonar picked up vehicles.

Crews are still in an active search and rescue effort and have several aerial units helping them look for as many as seven people still in the water. Wallace said those units will be working around the bridge for the next 8 - 12 hours.

Officials have yet to board the ship that crashed into the bridge. They will do that after they've inspected the ship. Wallace said the crew of the ship is still on board.

209 I have been across that bridge countless times. I'm not a fan of driving around Baltimore, but the harbor has turned into a major port for container ships. Reminds me when the bridge on I-75 collapsed between St. Pete and south and north up I-75. That was also a ship hitting a pier. One of the casualty was a Greyhound bus. The new Sunshine bridge is high enough to avoid something like that happening again.

The anchors is deployed at the bow, is it not? In fifty feet of water that takes more then a few seconds to hit bottom.

It almost looked to me as if the captain was heading between the furthest left side of the bridge, began to change his mind, lost power and ten seconds later is turning directly into the pillar.

From the direction he was coming any buoys ahead may have been deceiving as to where the channel was.
