No Way: Complaint Alleges that UWisconsin's "DEI Czar" Is Guilty of Decades of Research Misconduct

Huh, I'm starting to think that DEI is just a grift for people who were kicked out of Rainbow PUSH for ethical violations.

The research misconduct alleged is self-plagiarism for a change. Now, you may say, "You can't plagiarize yourself," and then you might repeat, with no fear of ethical rebuke, "You can't plagiarize yourself."

Which is true.

But he keeps presenting the same research as "new research." Apparently he's Regifted the same freaking "research" five times, counting each regurgitation as a new, separate academic achievement.

Oh and he also strangled a cop in 2011.

The chief diversity officer of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, LaVar Charleston, who also teaches at the university's school of education, has a decades-long track record of research misconduct, according to a complaint filed with the university on Wednesday and a Washington Free Beacon analysis. That misconduct includes presenting old studies as new research, which he has done at least five times over the course of his career.

The complaint, which was filed anonymously, implicates eight of Charleston's publications, many of them coauthored, and accuses him of plagiarizing other scholars as well as duplicating his own work. It comes as the university is already investigating Charleston over a separate complaint filed in January, alleging that a 2014 study by him and his wife--Harvard University's chief diversity officer, Sherri Ann Charleston--is a facsimile of a study he published in 2012.

"This is an extraordinary case of serial misrepresentation and deception," said Peter Wood, the head of the National Association of Scholars and a former associate provost at Boston University. "The closest analogy would be someone who sells the same real estate to five different buyers, all of whom are unaware of the others."

In January, Charleston won a lifetime achievement award for "excellence in higher education." The university trumpeted the award in a press release, praising his "unwavering dedication to creating inclusive environments in academia" and noting his "wealth of academic accolades."

...

"It is academic misconduct to publish essentially the same paper twice with no acknowledgment of the duplication," Alexander Riley, a sociologist at Bucknell University, told the Free Beacon. "It seems fairly clear that Charleston is gaming the system in order to get more on his CV than is merited by the amount of research he has actually done."

...

Each study is framed as a novel survey addressing a gap in the scholarly literature. None cite Charleston's dissertation or indicate that they are drawing on previously published material.

...

Charleston did not respond to a request for comment.

The complaint raises serious questions about how a flagship public university vetted one of its top administrators, whose career has been marked not just by questionable research practices but by criminal conduct.

Shortly after joining UW-Madison as a researcher in 2009, Charleston was charged in 2011 with attempting to strangle a police officer, according to documents obtained by the MacIver Institute, a conservative think tank in Wisconsin. He avoided a conviction through the Deferred Prosecution Program, a local initiative run by the district attorney's office that offers first-time felons the chance to do community service in lieu of jail time and removes their arrest records from public databases.

"Even with a PhD, I'm looked at as a criminal," Charleston said in an interview in 2020. "[I]t has to be because of my color."

Of course.

174 Shortly after joining UW-Madison as a researcher in 2009, Charleston was charged in 2011 with attempting to strangle a police officer, according to documents obtained by the MacIver Institute, a conservative think tank in Wisconsin.

"t has to be because of my color."

This is one area where an LLM AI can do a lot of good, I think, as computers are excellent at finding patterns/anomalies. Run all the papers through statistical analysis and see which ones show a high correlation of probability of matching. 220 Just saw the bond reduction for Trump - they cut it in half, I guess. But this whole "consumer fine" affair basd on real estate assets is still such a complete professional NY state judicial system humiliation that this climb back doesn't begin to help.

It has to means a climb down from current commercial real estate asset values in NY. Wealth managers from the biggest broker/dealers and institutions have huge funds that are managed for fees to their clients related upon accreted values. A fair share of that is in the commercial real estate market and NYC - this has to be a complete rethink on these fund managers part - they aren't allowed to sell falsely comprised risk assessments on certain funds to high-net-worth individuals and then not get sued when these obvious revaluation events happen.

Well, the guy was a white male. So, I asked him how he got the job. I told him that I couldn't imagine a lot of white males landing the position. He said "I'm gay." I asked him if the person that hired him was psychic. Nope, he flat out offered up the information. So I had to ask. Do you think they would have hired you if you were straight? He said (this is a quote) "Oh, of course not."

So, I pointed out to him that he was hired based on his sexual orientation in violation of Equal Opportunity Employment Commission laws of hiring and firing. I got a shrug. So I asked him if he ever attended a convention of people in like positions. He had ( a multitude of them). I asked how many white straight males also attended. He didn't think there were any despite one in Vegas having over 500 participants. I asked him if I could deduce from that that employment as a DEI representative was likely based on race, sex , and or sexual orientation? He said "Of course."

And just to clarify, I asked if he saw anything wrong with those enforcing diversity and equal participation being hired based on this?

252 222 It is often the case that academic papers are produced solely for consumption by other academics. A reading by any normal, reasonably intelligent person is mind-numbing.

The ultimate example of this was the Sokal affair. The mere title of his paper ( "Transgressing the Boundaries: Towards a Transformative Hermeneutics of Quantum Gravity") should have set off all sorts of alarms. But, no, the 'academics' gobbled it up like cake and ice cream. It's worthwhile to review the event:

Yep. A lot of these papers are written so that normal folks (i.e., non-practioners) will not have a clue what the paper is about. It's a method of identifying who the REAL people are in the academic circle when they can speak the "language" fluently.

The most incredible thing about the Sokal hoax was that the journal that published the hoax paper defended the decision by claiming -- after they knew it was a hoax -- that it was still worthwhile scholarship even thought it was completely made-up bullshit.

254 Look how wikipedia tries to smooth over plagiarism by 'minorities':
Not all cultures and countries hold the same beliefs about personal ownership of language or ideas. In some cultures, the reiteration of another professional's work can be a sign of respect or flattery towards the person whose work is reiterated. Students who are from such countries and cultures and who move to the United States or other Western countries (where plagiarism is frowned upon) may find the transition difficult.

Absolute twaddle. How can it be a sign of respect when you are passing it off as your own work, since, if you are successful, then no one will know it is plagiarized work.
One of my favorite Organic chemists was Ronald Breslow from Columbia. He got into trouble for self-plagiarizing. Strangely he was a Harvard graduate too.

Depends on the field. There's no excuse for abstruse language in, e.g., social sciences or the humanities because they generally deal with concepts that are familiar to everyone.

In STEM subjects it is forgivable because new phenomena and concepts require new terms that are unfamiliar to those outside the field.

Most academic articles are never cited and probably never read. The reason fraud is pervasive is because publishing is an academic metric, but effect isn't. Meaning just having a publication counts, even if it languishes in obscurity for eternity.

That's what doctoral dissertation committees are for, inter alia, to ascertain that the candidate did in fact do the work cited.
