The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition

punk-monkey.jpg

Ah...unintended consequences are often delicious, and this one is a doozy! Donald Trump was a bombastic businessman with an insatiable desire for publicity and fame. He wasn't much of a conservative, and that worked well in his world, where there were plenty of Democrats whose money and approval he needed.

But the savagery exhibited by those same Democrats when Donald Trump entered the political arena was almost unbelievable. And when he won the Presidency they doubled down, attacking him on all fronts, and trying to muzzle him by limiting his social media communication.

So he built his own outlet!

Trump Joins List of World's 500 Wealthiest Despite Left's Endless Lawfare

...[I]nvestors approved a deal to bring Trump's "Truth Social" platform public by merging it with a special purpose acquisition company (SPAC) called "Digital World Acqusition Corporation." That SPAC had the ticker DWAC at the time of the merger, and it's changed to DJT as of Tuesday to reflect the new listing.

While it's "on paper" for now, Trump's net worth officially doubled yesterday, making him one of the wealthiest 500 people on the planet.

I have no idea whether it will be a financial success. Valuations for businesses such as this are laughably inaccurate, and a darling of the stock market one day can be crushed the next.

But the timing couldn't be more galling for the rabid left trying to crush Trump under an avalanche of civil and criminal proceedings. Had they treated Donald Trump the way they did before he entered politics, my guess is that he would have been a mushy Republican with a few quirks about easing business restrictions after eight years of Obama lunacy. Probably Romney with a hotter wife!

The deplatforming, lies, legal machinations and vitriol pouring forth from every Democrat maw made sure that Donald Trump was combative and defensive and absolutely pushed him to take more conservative stances on many issues.

The left can thank themselves for that, and they can thank themselves for his potential new-found wealth!

It would take a heart of stone not to laugh!

16 Good for Trump, but I'm off all social media. It's a cancer.

Its pretty clear that a lot of people look at their friends "living their best life" on social media and get depressed even if you explain to them that is a curated, not at all realistic, view of it.

Imagine the couple up to their eyeballs in debt posting their latest vacation pictures to Facebook even though they might be about to lose their house...

Posted by: Xipe Totec at March 26, 2024 10:57 AM (pohLc)

If you looked, there’s likely only a handful of bridges over shipping lanes that could handle losing the whole pier and still stand up. Reason being, bridges are expensive, bridges over deep water are even more expensive. Redundancy is just not built into these. The expectation is that barges won’t hit the piers head on, the fenders are sized for glancing blows.

If he can convert it to meaningful cash or other assets after the lockup and blackout periods for insiders are up. That remains to be seen.

But in a way, that's beside the point. "Truth Social" was illiquid before. Now it's not. It *can* be converted now, at some price. That's a net benefit even if the investment isn't actually any more profitable or valuable than it was an unlisted enterprise. It has the same amount of personal investment for him as it did yesterday.

39 So Trump said he did have the $500 million to pay the bond for the appeal.
But that it was earmarked for his campaign. Alleging that the fine was a thinly disguised effort to freeze his campaign funds.

Which, of course, raises two questions:
1) how/why did NY know roughly what he had set aside?
2) if he had set aside that much, what is the real number? As every construction guy knows always double your initial estimate.

I'm thinking Trump maybe has gotten the message: Spend every dollar you can beg, borrow or steal to win because the left is as well.
He better borrow 100% against his Truth stake.

78 Speaking of unintended consequences - a day after stabbing Israel in the back at the UN, Biden and Blinken are saying "huh? wut? we dindu nuttin', why are they so mad???"

By openly attacking Israel's interests at the UN, Biden has now irretrievably destroyed his diplomatic relations with Israel (which is why Netanyahu canceled the diplomatic team that was supposed to leave for consultations with the US yesterday) But by disavowing what he did and trying to walk it back now, Biden continues to infuriate the anti-Israel left in his own party.

And the best part? Today Hamas unilaterally rejected any cease fire or any terms, thus making the entire exercise at the UN, and the treachery by Biden, completely meaningless in any real world sense. He did it all for nothing.

There seemed no place for the ship to go, and it seemed to make no corrective or emergency moves. If the ship pilot deliberately intended to hit and destroy the bridge, I don't know what he would have done differently.
Posted by: Elric Blade at March 26, 2024 11:10 AM (iFTx/)

The pilots radioed before the collision that they had suffered a loss of ship control and were concerned about a collision.

Someone claimed that the ship veered sharply-ish to starboard and then rammed the bridge support. It was suggested that the dropped their anchors in an attempt to slow down. Assuming the starboard anchor bit and the port anchor did not, that could explain a sharp course change. It's also possible that they were of the opinion that ramming the support head-on would cause less damage in the long run than swiping it.

172 I find it interesting that doubling Trump's wealth only puts him in the top 500.
-----
The MFM and Left have been playing games with PDT's wealth figures since 2016, pretending he's not really successful. Now, Candidate Trump might have been exaggerating at $12-billion but the Left saying 'only' $4-billion seemed pretty low to me. Playing this down is apiece of that.

Biden is also trying to give PDT an insulting nickname -- No Cash Don or something similar -- based on his [allegedly] not being able to pay the old $355-million NY fine in cash in one shot -- so that's another reason for the MFM to push it.

BTW, perhaps PDT will pay using nickels as the Bee suggested?

247 If you looked, there’s likely only a handful of bridges over shipping lanes that could handle losing the whole pier and still stand up. Reason being, bridges are expensive, bridges over deep water are even more expensive. Redundancy is just not built into these. The expectation is that barges won’t hit the piers head on, the fenders are sized for glancing blows.
Posted by: DoublySymmetric at March 26, 2024 11:05 AM (9mfKN)

...

It looks to me like the abutment did nothing to deflect the ship, or that there basically wasn't an abutment which seems too crazy to be true. But the ship hit one of the "legs" of that structure directly.

I'm also a structural guy (I think moon over vermont was also). I can't imagine a bridge being designed to lose a pier and stay up--it wouldn't just be the span increasing instantaneously but the lateral load (dynamic) would be huge and the design would have to stop that dynamic force in an impossibly short distance.

I have done just one federal job where we had to design for blast/losing a column (it's the DHS National Bio Defense Facility in Manhattan KS) and it results in huge increases in the structural frame.

Another time I experienced traffic backed up to Triangle because the bridge got stuck after raising it for some rich guy's sloop.

The photos show the ship severed at least one reinforced concrete support pillar in the support structure at one end of the main, arch section of the bridge. if you take away one support of a structure designed to be supported at both ends, you usually get damage as seen to the key bridge. The arch section went from a simply supported bean to a cantilevered beam. A cantilever beam lightly attached to its support.

Get two sawhorses and your longest ladder. Set up the sawhorses, then lay the ladder on top of the sawhorses, one sawhorse under each end of the ladder. Kick one sawhorse out from under the ladder. The result will be a good representation of what appears to have happened to the Key Bridge.

Yeah. If they'd cast the whole thing as (my idea) having Mr. Waverly tell a bedtime story to his grandchildren, it would have worked as a minor out-of-format classic. Not being able to build a bridge that can stand up with the loss of a column, it is likely possible to design one that can lose a column without losing the entire bridge, other than the spans directly adjacent to the lost column. The whole bridge collapsed from one end to the other, save the approaches.

Watched the video. Ship took out one tower for the center span, which also supported the span to the left. Both those spans fall due to loss of support. Looks like the other side span fell because the falling center span took the other tower with it.

280 That's quite a flimsy-looking bridge. The idea that massive container ships would be anywhere near there seems risky. I'm not sure where this ship was supposed to be. It couldn't make it under the bridge. Was it supposed to be anywhere near the bridge?
