THE MORNING RANT: A Few Days After Wipeout of Anti-Voucher Republicans in Texas Primaries, Georgia Republicans Suddenly Pass School Choice
Voters were clear, one Republican strategist said: No more “betraying conservative principles or collaborating with Democrats.”There are still a few more Democrat-aligned “Republicans” who did not win a majority of votes in their primaries, so they are headed to runoffs. These include House Speaker Dade Phelan, who has persistently worked to kill school choice legislation. The great flushing of faux-conservative Republicans in the Texas legislature is not yet over.
When Shelley Luther announced she was challenging state Rep. Reggie Smith in this year’s Republican primary, some party members dismissed it as a quixotic bid from the former Dallas salon owner, who rose to prominence in 2020 for defying a pandemic lockdown order.
But despite being outspent more than 2-to-1, Luther scored an upset win over Smith in Tuesday’s primary, virtually ensuring she will represent the bright red North Texas district when lawmakers reconvene in January. Luther is among a crop of firebrand Republican candidates likely headed to the Texas House next year to replace the record nine GOP incumbents ousted on Tuesday.
Republican voters in Texas didn’t just throw out anti-school choice legislators in the primary, they also defeated three “moderate” Republicans on the state’s highest court. These judges had sought to institutionalize election fraud in Texas’ blue cities by prohibiting Attorney General Paxton from prosecuting those who cast illegal ballots.
“Insurgent Republicans make major gains in Texas primaries” [Texas Tribune – 3/06/2024]Six Texas House Republicans who fought Abbott’s attempt to create a school voucher program in Texas lost their primaries to pro-voucher candidates, while another four were forced into runoffs to defend their rural districts.It was only a few days after the Texas primaries that seven Republicans in the Georgia statehouse flipped from their previous opposition to school choice, this time voting for it. “Georgia school voucher bill narrowly clears longtime obstacle with state House passage” [AP – 3/14/2024]
Voters also ejected three Republican judges from the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals, the state’s highest criminal court, including Presiding Judge Sharon Keller, who garnered less than 40% of the vote. Paxton sought to oust the three judges after they ruled in 2021 that his office didn’t have the power to unilaterally prosecute voter fraud.
Georgia Republicans powered a voucher plan funding private school tuition and home schooling through the state House on Thursday, nearing a goal that has long eluded the state’s school choice advocates as GOP leaders overcame longstanding skepticism from some rural members of their party. The House voted 91-82 for Senate Bill 233, passing it with one vote to spare. The same bill failed last year when 16 Republicans voted against it. Thursday, seven Republicans and one Democrat who opposed the measure last year flipped to support it.Those seven Republicans whose votes flipped didn’t want to be on the receiving end of what they just saw happen at Texas ballot boxes. With Senate passage now complete, school choice is about to become law in Georgia. Georgia senators gave final approval Wednesday to a plan to create a $6,500 voucher funding for private school tuition and home schooling, sending the measure to Gov. Brian Kemp for his signature.
Local elections matter - they have both a local and a national impact. Because Republican primary voters in Texas finally threw a bunch of faux-conservative politicians out of office, Texas will get more conservative governance, and the conservative agenda will also advance in other states whose elected officials don’t want to suffer the same fate as their RINO brethren in Texas. Educational dollars need to be attached to students and not school systems.
If a town want to build a school building and staff it, great, that should be on their dime and based on interest on sending a student there, but my guess is that public educational facilities would go the way of the dodo and kids would be the better for it.

Fiat currency allows the government to do it at will. More money chasing the same goods and services equals inflation. Don't believe the phony government inflation rate; Joe Biden's government lies almost as much as he does. Go look at your grocery bill to get the real inflation rate.

Politico.EU has an article out today noting what has been obvious for a while - almost noone is volunteering to join the Ukrainian army, and draft-dodging is rampant in Ukraine. (The average age of a frontline Ukrainian soldier is 43.)

Educational dollars need to be attached to students and not school systems.
If a town want to build a school building and staff it, great, that should be on their dime and based on interest on sending a student there, but my guess is that public educational facilities would go the way of the dodo and kids would be the better for it.

My district had almost no info on the two no-names running for state R committee. One I found was the step father of a prominent local Dem congressman. The other, I could find nothing. My gut told me to vote for the one not related to the Dem. I could be wrong though. These races need more publicity, but I suspect the entrenched R party officials prefer it to be kept on the down low.

Yesterday, RFK, Jr. had qualified for the ballot in 2 of our 50 states: UT & NV. Today, he's back down to being on the ballot in ONLY ONE STATE!: UT. That's because the ballot access petitions he submitted in NV didn't include a VP running mate-- as CLEARLY required by NV law. Doesn't exactly inspire confidence in his legal team, does it? So, back to square one! Anybody, let alone a supposed lawyer, could've read the NV law and told him, "These won't be accepted without a VP on them."
Supposedly K will announce his VP selection tomorrow (Tues.).
I question whether Trump can win without Kennedy on the ballot in the 7 swing states. Poll after poll: H2H? Within the MOE. 3-way race? Trump leads outside the MOE.

Raich v. Gonzalez which the majority opinion was penned by no less than Scalia with four libs on the court extended the reach of Wickard to include even raising marijuana plants for personal consumption.
Scalia got it wrong in Smith v. Oregon too--twice and contributed to the administrative state by refusing an opportunity to overturn Chevron. He actually acknowledged that one as a mistake.
Put not your faith in justices of Scotus as they will betray you often.

Congrats to those Texans who kicked their RINO-weasels to the curb. As for me, our district, which was recently re-drawn, now includes a chunk of Travis County (Austin) and the RINO-weasel/Dem alliance came through by re-electing Ellen Troxclair over Kyle Biederman, who is as MAGA as you can get. Because of this, I will be voting either for the Dem or third-party/write-in. I will no longer support Dem Lite candidates that masquerade as Republican. FJB and FET.
