I read John Fogarty's autobio. It was interesting, & I enjoyed it, even though he's a leftist, of course. Tried to get an injunction against Trump playing his songs at Trump rallies. He's still alive, VERY old, & still sings in public on special occasions. He must surely have more money than God at this point, I assume. Posted by: EdmundBurkesShade at March 22, 2024 10:24 PM (317f2) Generally the elements are the maximum weight, the best running gear, the best balance and the skill of the kid doing the whittling. The legend was that one kid didn't use the nails provided, but used stiff wire that was a bit sprung, like the wheels of a Hotweels car. It was considered legal a the time since it used the required wheels, but it got broken before it could compete when the scout was playing around with it. Personally I had no manual skills and didn't understand the need for the wheels to be all in the same exact direction. IIRC Posted by: Kindltot at March 22, 2024 10:31 PM (D7oie) 95

I read John Fogarty's autobio. It was interesting, & I enjoyed it, even though he's a leftist, of course.
Fogarty also did the most innovative job of expert witnessing on the stand that I've ever heard of. He switched record companies, and his old record company claimed that he had reused one of his old tunes for a song for the new record company, and wanted to be paid. Fogarty got on the stand (with acoustic guitar), and explained why the two tunes were actually quite different. The jury found for Fogarty. Dad said he went up to one of the local reservoirs one spring when someone noticed a car had driven down the boat ramp sometime during the winter and spent the part of the year submerged. The state police dragged it out for the coroner to look inside while the reporters from the local papers tried to look over his shoulder.
The cops asked if they should shoo the reporters back, and per my dad, the coroner said not to bother, they would back off once the smell hit them. "They unlatched the door handle, and the door swung open, a trickle of water came out, and the crowd magically moved back ten feet." I miss that man. I just read about the the oldest book from Europe...which is also the craziest story I've heard about a book.
In the 1800s an Austro-Hungarian bureaucrat took a vacation to Egypt and bought a souvenir as one does. In his case he bought...a mummy and brought it home and put it in his house as a decoration. Later other Austrians noticed the mummy's bandages had writing on them and eventually figure out the writing was in Etruscan. Etruscan was a language/civilization that lived north of Rome in Italy in the Royal/early Republican period and the writing is dated to around 200 BC. So...somehow a book from Italy wound up in Egypt and someone decided to use the linen of the book as mummy bandages for some reason. Oh, but it gets weirder. The linen the writing it on isn't from around 200 BC when the writing was done. Its from around 400 BC. So...someone decided to write this book on ancient linen. Why? Who knows. The book is called the Liber Linteus https://tinyurl.com/4evx2hcc Posted by: 18-1 at March 22, 2024 11:07 PM (ibTVg) 171

Main thing is BP. After a stroke, or when there's high risk you want BP to be as low as you can without getting too low (more risk of falls, dizziness). Then they added another one called "Memantine", at a low dose. That's a dementia drug, but it has uses for stroke patients. Is Prokofiev’s Crusaders in Pskov similar to his music for the Teutonic Knights in Alexander Nevsky?
The same. Prokofiev started writing film scores in the late '30s, since he thought that it was politically safer than writing symphonic music. Interestingly, for some of Alexander Nevsky, Prokofiev wrote the music first, and then Eisenstein edited the scenes to fit the music. I read that Prokofiev was on Stalin's "do not touch" list, for some reason. Ditto for Boris Pasternak.
One of Prokofiev's new musical pieces premiered at the Bolshoi, with Stalin in attendance, seated close to Prokofiev. During a break in the music, Stalin began speaking angrily to the person sitting next to him. According to observers, Prokofiev turned absolutely white. Anyway, she's expected to light off sometime this year between March and Sept. Note this a "regular" recurring nova, not a supernova or something really big: https://tinyurl.com/278jw4jf It will go from about magnitude 10 to somewhere between 3.0 and 2.0. Thus a "new" (nova) star will appear in the sky. May last a few weeks or so. Anyway, there may be a betting pool on when she'll light up. Wallace.
Wallace's colon gave out in 1986. "The Reagan years weren't all daffodils for me," he says, as if that somehow explains why he needs to take an explosive shit in the can every 2:15. Wallace says they're multivitamins, but you're pretty sure they're edibles, because every time he takes one after lunch comes his "concentration time," when he zones out and stares at his monitor for an hour. Did I mention lunch? Wallace heats up fish head soup in the microwave every day. "So Charlie don't get wise to my location." No matter how miserable things are, Wallace always has a story about how this is no big deal. "Everyone under 65 seems trans to me. When I was six and working at the mine...." Wallace. For the trapped would-be burglar, you need to vary up your repertoire. Provided they're not European, you need to start with a cover of "Dancing Queen" by Wayne Newton (Bobby Vinton would be an acceptable substitute, or even Slim Whitman). Then a switch-over to "In the Year 2525" with the speed slightly slowed down. The "Love Boat Theme" is up next in the batting order, and you round everything out with Bill Shatner's (cover? can you really call it that?) of "Rocketman."
The sound system needs to be turned all the way to 11, as Spinal Tap recommended. Meanwhile, large plasma screens should display a random collage of images - snippets from "Little House on the Prairie" paired up with Biden attempting to make speeches or just simply move in a proper direction, combined with eerily-slowed down bits from the classic "Hee-Haw" years. Once you've got the basics down, you can add to or subtract from the proposals above as you see fit. For example, you might want to inser a few bars from the theme song for "Pee-Wee's Playhouse," or if you're really loaded with the green stuff, a hologram of vintage Rod Serling informing them that they're doomed beyond all hope. The guy who shot himself had a Serpa holster. They had a paddle release button you pushed with your index finger. The button's placement had a nasty design problem that it put your index finger right by the trigger as you pulled the weapon free. That plus the fact you were pushing as you drew, meant you could easily end up pulling the trigger on your draw.

He gave a half hearted answer - "Oh I have friends that live in CO...maybe some day I'd want to move there" and this crap cracks me up. If global warming is real and going to turn the earth into an oven in 12 years (12 years from the 1980s) then you should be moving your butt to somewhere cold right now. Oh another fun questions someone asked him if Science has a dogma. He thought about it, agreed that Modern Funded science engages in gate keeping and that yes you have to agree with the basic principles the elites running it hold to get published but then argued...but that's not dogma! We always have a cold snap around Easter. Early or late, cold snap. My cuz, the re-tard meteorologist 'splained to me, like Benny Shapiro with facts and logic how that's just confirmation bias at work. The "last frost" date is a matter of a probability distribution. The 50% mark for last frost is around my birfday, April 22. When you look at the probabilities of the dates of Easter vs this see, you see there's a good chance it's gonna be cold around then. And, you notice it. The more rare events when it ain't cold around Easter, you don't pay any attention, nor do you pay attention, when it gets cold much later than an early Easter. The dementia's just enhancing Joe's rude, arrogant, racist and mean personality that was already there, with plenty of video evidence to support that statement. Just watch. Soon or once dead, they'll blame his 'bad' personality on the dementia, overlooking (as usual, the lie of omission) his rancid past. The most racist administration in US History is the Obama/Biden Administration. In their case, it proved that old adage that politics makes strange bedfellows, a whitey-hating president and a black-hating vice-president. Hate has no home in the Democrat Party. Well, maybe just a little, especially towards that Orange Man Bad guy who just won't quit. 'Look what he's making us do to him!', as is said in many a typical abuse story. This guy I am watching tried to explain Bidenflation away by arguing that companies raised prices because of COVID (slightly better then the standard leftist cant of because they are evil) and then just didn't lower them after COVID.
Put let's consider that. So all the companies, even ones that didn't have supply chain issues, raised prices because of COVID and now their real prices are back down. Other companies will come in and offer lower prices to win market share and still make a smaller, but real profit. Ah, but wait, its because they are ALL part of various monopolies/cartels. And of course...all of them are? And all these cartels did the same thing at the same time? Fine fine. Let's go with that. The federal government has had anti-trust power for around 100 years. If this is what is happening the only reason Biden's government isn't "busting trusts" is because he doesn't want to. So, the argument that the bidenflation isn't bidenflation ultimately argues that Biden is causing the price increases anyway. Posted by: 18-1 at March 23, 2024 01:21 AM (ibTVg) 374

Indeed. Well, I just joke. I kid, I kid. For most shit, 7-bit ASCII is all you need. As an experiment, I copied and pasted that text into Notepad++, my favorite text editor. It recognized it as UTF-8 (what code page, though, well, I'm not sure). Mostly it rendered it even more normal looking that Pixy's did. Except for the last what was supposed to look like "actually". Windows 10 (and 11) have this UTF-8 "code page" you can enable. It's experimental. This is a loose meaning of "code page". I'll bet if I enabled that, that spammer text would display just like it did in Chrome with Pixy's rendering. Microsoft is realizing that UTF-8 has won out, and is creating this "code page" to make UTF-8 encoding look like it's supposed to as it does across the web. But I'm not gonna enable it, because it's not ready for prime time. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at March 23, 2024 03:15 AM (w6EFb) 439
When I was a kid, learning computers and shit, I had ASCII (ANSI) and the early concept of code page pretty much down pat. Then things got more complicated, and I let the world past me by. Now, I'm learning a bit more, trying to get up to speed as close as a 29 yr old can. I realized that Microsoft had messed me up. They insisted on called UTF-16 encoding "Unicode", which made me associate Unicode with a paricular encoding scheme. That's wrong. I've got it down pat, at least with the encoding schemes. UTF-8 is the way it's going. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at March 23, 2024 03:17 AM (w6EFb) 440

Ken Thompson (pbuh, UNIX Founding Father) created UTF-8 while still at Bell Labs. He and buddy worked it out at a New Jersey diner back in the day, sketching it out on the proverbial napkins. To paraphrase Fritz Hollings, that man knew what he was talkin' about. UTF-8 is the best encoding. He made it look like 7-bit ASCII for all such lower characters. Then he created a scheme for multi-byte encoding of the higher code points (requiring more than 7 bits) where you would know which byte was which. Thus, if, due to errors or what have you, you suddenly jumped in the middle of a stream, you could easily align back with the "next character". The story of how Ken Thompson created UTF-8 "right before my eyes" as told by Rob Pike: https://tinyurl.com/2jwovn8p IBM asked Thompson and Pike to "consult" on UTF encoding. Thompson and Pike realize they had opportunity, if they did it quick, to "do it right" and get that engrained in a standard that would take over. But they had to do it fast.
