Reba LaJoy Wilson, 43, of Indianapolis, was arrested March 20 after police said she held a dryer repairman at gunpoint and shot at him as he tried to escape, according to a probable cause affidavit. Wilson told the man who came to fix her dryer on March 18 that a previous company said her machine was under warranty, according to court documents. The repairman said he “could not honor another company’s warranty,” documents show.

I've just started watching a series, it's old (like 8 years) but new to me -- The Man in the High Castle.
So far, it's great. Riveting. It's based on the novel by Philip K. Dick, and, like garrett, I love me some Dick.
But I have to ask:
Is this an allegory for what we're actually going through right now, somehow written 60 years in advance, adapted for the small screen back in 2015? How is this even possible?

Sorry to have to tell you this, but....
Still here. Thought I might be going home tomorrow, but there is a pesky fly in the ointment. If they keep me less than 48 hours, there are insurance contingencies that kick in (which doesn't apply to me, 'cuz I am still on a private plan for the next 18 months or so), so they can't/won't put an IV in.
On the other hand, the 2 surgeons who saw my results from the culture done on my wounds earlier today both seem to want me on IV antibiotics, so we will see what happens tomorrow.
Since I am feeling fine otherwise, I was hoping to be home in my own bed no later than tomorrow night. Looks like I might be twiddling my thumbs a little while longer (not to mention how much I HATE having needles in my arm - I wouldn't be a very good drug addict 🤣🤣🤣

PK Dick was a borderline bipolar who self medicated with amphetamines and had serious problems with identifying reality. He was a very chaotic person and most of his work has to do with anomie and alienation made real. Could be. Some vistas along the Rogers Pass section of the Trans Canada highway look like that. Pretty sure a telephoto lens was used there. You could find similar vistas along Rocky Mountain roads all the way from Alaska to New Mexico.

Yesterday, I called an audible and made Paul take me to the ER just to be safe. After blood tests showed that I had an I section, they kept me for a 48 hour observation. Cultures on the open wounds (now covered with sterile dressings) came back positive for infection today, so I am in a holding pattern until tomorrow, when they decide what to do with me.
Thankfully, we only live a few blocks from the hospital, so if I need to be busted out, I can call hubs and tell him to come get me 😊♥️
I'm gonna be fine; this is just a minor setback. Still on track for Surgery #3 to take place in mid- to late-June!

Meh, you get used to it. My arm veins were destroyed by an IV medication this one visit. Now my arm veins are like an 80-year-old heroin addict. They often 'dry up' in the middle of the whole thing, requiring multiple pokes. That doesn't happen with the back of the hand. Oh yeah, and monthly blood jabs.

People from politically connected families in Kiev and elsewhere, not so much.
So, the latest proposal is to have a universal draft, but do it like the United States did in the Civil War - you can buy your way out.

This has always been a stupid reason for lifetime appointments to the court. Judges aren't gods, they are just ordinary people making important decisions like any politician. Their decisions have long term consequences but so do the decisions of politicians. There is no justification for keeping people on the court for life. Some of them, many of them, turn out to be dumbasses or activists and pretending there is any real recourse to remove them is a lie.

Let me offer a dfferent way to handle this.
9 Justices, 9 year terms so one up each year. At any point a majority of state legislatures can vote to remove a justice and 26 yeah votes removes him.
Oh, and double the current salary for a justice but they are taxed at a rate of 100% for anything higher then that for the next 10 years after leaving office.

A move like that has to be made at the very beginning of a war, when emotions are high and there seems to be a possibility of victory. To put that in place when the troops are retreating and things are falling apart is to court disaster. Russians and Ukrainians should know this story well; the 1917 revolution kicked off when a demoralized and angry army rebelled against their leadership.

In the past I did bird feeding. I had a variety of bird feeders and liked watching all the birds. The problem was that I had chipmunks or gophers near my front porch, squirrels were eating all the birdseed, and I had mole tunnels all through my front lawn. I had also heard that storing bird seed in your garage could cause you to have squirrels get into your garage. I had to give up bird feeding.

Yeah, I should note that the Russians are no better in who they draft - not a lot of people from Moscow get drafted into the Russian Army. The draftees (and volunteers) mostly come from smaller Russian cities, rural areas, and non-Russian speaking areas.

There is some big venture capital money behind this, they must have some government funding and/or guarantees behind them. They can't work, they won't last, and they are all going to be huge financial boondoggles, and I imagine within 10 years they will all be gone at a 100% writeoff. Still, the people promoting it now will have raked off their billions and will be long gone by the time the scheme falls apart.

The "unit" for grain is "bushels", that's common farmer parlance. A bushel is technically a unit of volume, dry volume. However in practice, it is a unit of mass.
You define a bushel of corn to be 56 lbs, a bushel of wheat and soybeans to be 60 lbs. Barely is 48 lbs and Oat is 32 lbs.
They are buying and selling in terms of weight, but using a volume unit in disguise.

One also had to correct for moisture content. It was big for silage purposes to buy high moisture corn, still green, as high as 30% moisture.

They based that weight per bushel for each grain on typical conditions based on grain quality, moisture content etc. Mostly. Soybeans is a bit high. We never had soybeans get close to 60 lbs.
But it doesn't matter, as you're buying and selling based on weight.

Really a matter of practicalities and scale. It is hard to quickly measure large volumes of stuff, liquids aside. Farmer drives his grain truck to the inland terminal, it gets weighed. He drops the load through the grate, weighs again, gets paid for the difference. Quick and easy. And they have already checked the moisture content, so they know exactly how much grain was actually handled.

I remember the standard grading procedure at the elevator. The man (usually the head of the thing, as he didn't trust too many people other than himself to do it), would get up the truck with probe. A long probe. He needed to get representative sample of the load. So he'd take probes in several spots, dump it in a big bucket then mix it up.
Into the grading table area. A standard volume container, (about a quart volume) on a scale. Precisely measure the weight per volume, then with a moisture reading, correction was made. Then the official weight per bushel was given. This was a quality rating.
Then some more of the sample was sifted, weighin the foreign material and all that, another quality grade.

Some of those elevator guys had stories about sneaky guys trying to fool them. They'd put shit quality stuff and attempt to bury it under high quality stuff. This is why the random, uniform probing was important to do right.
One even recounted how a caught a clever guy placing magnet weights under the scale arm. He had a very clever scheme. He go in the scale house and create a distraction, sneak the magnet under the left side to make it read heavier. Then remove it.
He had to do that on the full weight run, get the magnets on and out.

Habbakuk was to build a floating ice island made of Pykrete, which was a mixture of wood pulp and water, frozen. A composite material that was very, very strong. And quite resistant to melting, the wood pulp being an insulating blanket on the periphery. They actually built a small prototype in a lake in Jasper National Park in Alberta, and it proved to be quite manageable. A relatively small refrigeration plant would maintain its integrity. It took months to melt completely when the refrigeration plant was finally shut down.
What really doomed Project Habbakuk was that the advent of long-range aircraft eliminated the need for a mid-Atlantic refueling station and aircraft base.

The magnet trick guy's distractions were stuff like "accidentally" knocking something over. Or bumping into the scale operator, again accidentally. Even stuff as simple, "Hey! Look at that over there!"
Anyway, they got wise to him. Again, his standard routine was, on the full side weigh to get in the scale house, place the magnet, then remove it.
They let him do it. But then, he made sure that he couldn't remove it by being right in the way. No problem really, go around dump, come back, then remove the magnet. Hope you could do it before your empty weight but just get it off before anyone saw it.
Well, they removed it immediately. Then, when he came back for the empty weight, they let him distract them. Big time. Gave him all the time in the world to remove his weight, which was missing.
As he was getting sort of nervous and panicky, the operator pulled the weights out of his own pocket and said, "Here, you lookin' for this?"
And then, "Get out, and don't ever come back."

Wikipedia has a pretty good article on Project Habbakuk. I think one of its downfalls was mission creep. If it had been kept as a simple giant raft, it could have been built in the time available, but they wanted to make a huge, maneuverable ship, with internal aircraft hangars out of it.

Managed to put in "16 gallons" into my tank. Which was only a 15 gallon tank, and *not* empty. Hmmmm.

I have no direct experience with pellet stoves. I have always regarded them as using a "boutique" fuel. Although you can buy, fairly affordably, from Chy-nah, pelletizing machines to make your own wood or straw pellets.
A Stirling (hot air ) engine would be an ideal driver for the the feed auger in a pellet stove. Maybe a spring-wound clockwork drive for the first few minutes of operation until the stove became hot enough for the Stirling to run.

2 (identical specs) to turn augers. One turns constantly, to feed into the firepot. The other, above it, turns incrementally according to the selected 'heat range'.
An exhaust blower, to vent gases out (also, to draw in fresh air thru the system)
A "convection blower" so air will flow across the hot unit and heat the room.
The damned auger motors are the cheapest POS things, and fail often. I keep at least two on-hand at all times during heating season. Fifty bucks a pop, for that shiite.

The idea of pelletized fuel is not the culprit. ANY "stove" relying on FOUR motors to operate, IS.
The pelletized fuel should be in a hopper, two, maybe three ft. above the burn chamber. Feed? Gravity, interrupted by purely heat driven temps, coil spring thermometers, to a mechanical gate OPEN/CLOSE function, driven by the heat expanded or cool contracted spring.
Again. AOP and/or/with Publius. They can DO this. Lotsa pics of what you've got, maybe some measurements.
Cures, not replacements. Best outcomes, yes?

The fking auger motors are the problem. They used to last a couple years.
With each successive replacement, they last shorter & shorter times.
Have replaced exhaust motor ONCE, in the 15 years we've had this unit.

Chinese PRODUCT (flaws) have overcome Chinese ENGINEERING and DESIGN specs (stolen).

Looked for "pellet stove motor" on amazon. Typically, they are a shaded-pole AC motor on a gear train to gear them down to 1 RPM. Some look like sealed clock motors. Those little shaded-pole motors used to be used in cheap phonographs, and lasted for many decades. Clock motors, likewise. Just spitballing here, but I'm guessing the auger motors fail because the heat messes up the lubricant, or softens plastic gears in the gear train that drops the speed from 1750 RPM down to 1 RPM. Maybe some engineering to get the motor and gear train a couple of feet away from the firebox would be in order.

One big problem, is the pellets themselves. We must be careful of which brand to buy, as some have very long pellets and the little motors must work hard to sever them as they feed thru the auger tubes. Puts a heavy load on them.
Anyway-- my head has been pounding. Had to empty the hopper twice already today & cram my 29 year old body into some low, tight spaces for hours. Ugh!

Suggestion: put 30:1 worm reduction gear on the end of each auger shaft. 30 turns of worm rotates auger shaft one turn. Worm is driven by flexible cable (like speedometer cable) about 4 feet long from 30 RPM motor plus gear train in floor-mounted accessory box. Worm and cable lubricated with high-temp grease.

Moving and metering the flow of a solid fuel to a firebox is always a PITA. That's why gas and liquid fuels are so wonderful. JQ says her stove has a circulating fan which is reliable, and an exhaust scavenge blower, also reliable (wonder why the blower does not supply forced air?). And a fixed-speed auger to establish base fuel flow, and a variable/intermittent auger to increase heat output over a range. I guess with pellet fuel, you have to keep some fire going all the time, or it won't relight on its own. Regular old wood stoves are the same in that respect. Gas and oil burners have automatic igniters.

Coal stokers have a hopper which gravity-feeds coal into a horizontal auger, which pushes it about 3 to 4 feet into the firebox, where it wells up into a cast-iron "crater", and tumbles down the sides thereof. Run by a 1/6 HP motor with a hefty gear reduction. Same motor also runs an air blower coaxial with the auger. The choke point with these things is where the coal enters the auger. Every now and then, you might get one or two oversize lumps of coal meeting in the gate just right and bridging it off. I think some designs have an eccentric shaft slowly turning in the gate to break such clogs up.

I remember, as a young man, trying to do an auger HP requirement calculation. For shits and grins to see if I could do it. I remember there were some things I left out. Anyway, consult tables for this, then compare your own calculations. :-)
Anyway, you have mass acceleration, friction, and lift. Auger behavior is as follows, power required per unit length:
Increases with density of material, speed, and friction (wet sticky material much more power than dry, slick material).
Incline power maxes at 45 degrees. It's less for vertical, but vertical is more than horizontal. At some point for vertical lift, bucket lift is more efficient than and auger. No moving material friction with the bucket.
Now, all this for big augers moving lots of grain, for little augers feeding pellets, while the principle apply, it's not any big HP requirement.

IIRC, when I did my power requirement calculation, just to be sure, I figured I'd double whatever I came up with. Turns out that would've worked. Looking at the tables afterward, my doubling would've got me just over the top for the 45 incline, provided my density and friction wasn't too much.

A cool thing I remember. Consider charging a capacitor. Energy stored is 1/2 qV (or 1/2 C V^2). Energy expended by a constant voltage source is just qV. Half the energy is wasted. No matter what the resistance is, etc. You can see this.
No, accelerating mass via friction, which conveyors and augers do (mass hits something moving as is accelerated to speed via contact friction) works the same way. You waste half the 1/2 mv^2 energy as friction. IOW, you want to accelerate a mass to a speed by fiction, you expend a total mv^2 of energy. Half goes to heat, half goes to kinetic energy.
And this doesn't matter what the form of the friction is. You could put a variable resistor in series with the capacitor to charge it. No matter what, you lose half the energy to heat.

Now, with an auger, the complication is there is friction going on all the time. With a belt conveyor or bucket type, the friction is only happening while the material is slipping. Once it gets up to speed, no more friction.
With an auger, that friction is continuous throughout the run.
The actual analysis is a wee bit complex.

Experiment I'd like to try. Get a group of physics professors and tell them to solve this auger power problem How much power per unit length to we need to turn this auger at a certain speed for a range of materials.
They must solve this from their own knowledge. Oh, I'd let 'em look up some various general formula if they were rusty, but nothing specific. Figure this out from first principles.
It would take them a while, and they'd get wrong at first.

Heh, that reminds me, when I was in my 20s. Daddy had the bright idea of augering fertilizer into the spreader. Get a load of fertilizer in the truck, then auger it into the spreader with our portable grain auger.
Well....it didn't work so well. The little tractor, which could handle that auger for all the grains without even working up a sweat, bogged down, blowing black smoke.
The torque was such it broke a shear bolt on the drive. That's the difference between density and friction, both much, much higher for bulk fertilizer compared to grain.

I was 'branded' the Black Sheep when I ran away, to get away from the bullsh!t from sibling. Mom & Dad were clueless-- they didn't think it was so bad, but they didn't see all that was happening, as they were more concerned with the younger siblings.
Whatever.
But the folks didn't "forgive" me for decades. I think they never really knew how bad it was, or understood why I had to get away from it.
