Nobody ever said anything about it keeping the lawyer away: The DOJ has filed its very long awaited antitrust lawsuit against Apple. (The Verge)

While Apple isn't a monopoly in terms of total market control, it does control about two thirds of the US smartphone market, and it certainly abuses that market dominance to the detriment of its customers.

And as we've seen, Apple has been playing the malicious compliance game with market regulators for the past decade.

Interestingly, California is one of the sixteen states joining the DOJ in this lawsuit. New York is another. Woke idiot governments gone to war with woke idiot businesses?
Nuh uh, said Apple, arguing that the lawsuit could prevent it looting the corpses of crippled orphans. (9to5Mac)

Windows succeeded because anyone could develop and sell software for it without having to give Microsoft 30% of every transaction.
Oh, and there's this: An security flaw in all Apple Silicon Macs leaks encryption keys if an attacker can get you to run suspect code. (Ars Technica)

It's another "side channel" attack; these are subtle and not very efficient but very hard to avoid. Intel, AMD, and Arm have all seen side channel attacks in recent years.

It's kind of like figuring out someone's password just by listening to them type, and matching the sounds of the keys to letter frequencies. Takes forever - or 26 minutes, whichever comes first - but very hard to guard against.

Encryption software can be rewritten to avoid the flaw, but that will make it much slower.

The story on the ONT about Col. Maclaren, the error on his pension lump sum letter, his response, and their witty response in return shows that -- at least twenty years ago -- the spirit that built a worldwide empire, and the famous dry sense of British humor, was not dead. (I just wish I'd have a lump sum payment on retirement of seventy grand.)

We had a nice several days of sunny warmth-- 70s here.

Rain tonight & thru next week or so. Heater is ON again after a couple days OFF.

Cat got into a scrape with woodpecker, luckily only a small patch of fur missing under one eye & didn't get it pecked out. Birdy ultimately lost the battle but wasn't eaten.

24 I decided to skip working out -- stretches and calisthenics only. Last night I actually got close to enough sleep, so I feel like luxuriating in it. I'll have time tomorrow a.m. before I go to vote, wash the car, and take Stirling to the shop to check out his patches of thinning fur. He's not licking them that I can see, no more than a cat usually grooms himself, and not scratching; and little Dagny does not have the same problem.

Ideally a trailer *should* be composed of some of the best moments in a film and hint at bigger better ones than you see. In that sense the trailer is a success.

Hey, when the first film came out, I was not terribly interested in seeing yet another SNL cast flick. "Murray and Aykroyd? Ahhh, I dunno." Then Roger Ebert gave it a big thumbs up on his syndicated show and touted its "sly humor," and I thought it worth the trip -- and boy, was it! Who knows, this one too could be well worth our time and money. Afterlife was great.

I genuinely wish the 2016 movie was at least meh, if only to spare the world the histrionics of its defenders. But I knew it was a disaster in the making when the first trailer came out. The chemistry just wasn't there.

The Red Letter Media Plinkett review made a really good point about the director and cast having demonstrable comedic talent in earlier endeavors but it just didn't come together in a way to make those talents combine to be greater than the sum of their parts. For example, a fairly minor effort starring Melissa McCarthy and Sandra Bullock, 'The Heat' had fair better interaction between its stars. A better movie because the interaction is the high point.

The RLM review also noted some writing missteps and that half the writing team was a woman of no notable credits, yet in the cast was someone who'd just gotten an Oscar for her writing on a movie that included both herself and McCarthy. So, a major case of what could have been. I've thought about an alternate version done as a revival rather than a reboot, where Janine Melnitz works behind the scenes to draw her selected candidates into learning the forgotten history and becoming the new Ghostbusters.

42 Apple has been around just as long as Microsoft. I'm very hard put to believe that the NSA hasn't had their desires fulfilled by Apple all the way back to the early 80s, especially after mainstream magazines like Byte began running articles on cryptography. Stuff related to WWII era cryptography was still considered secret and it became glaringly obvious that this was pointless in the face of personal computers becoming common.

I primarily use Apple products for their stability, the look and feel of iOS hasn't really changed since the introduction of the iPhone in 2006.

I don't know if the iOS is still set up this way (I assume it would be), but I had tried an iphone years ago and hated the keyboard so I tried to switch to Swiftkey. Except the Swiftkey keyboard was just a re-skin of the Apple keyboard which also sucked.

When I looked into it, it had to do with Apple trying to ensure security and make sure the devices maintained the "it just works" advertising element. So - and I say this as a complete layman in all of this - it looks like, for things to run on an Apple, they're working in a pre-determined, pre-approved way that Apple controls and maintains control.

I don't know if that has anything to do with anything, but I thought it was interesting back when I tried the iphone.

If the average Social Security check is around $1,400/month I know of no place in my area you can rent an apartment for that amount. Food costs are crazy expensive. Tax tables are not being adjusted for inflation and now seniors could be liable to pay taxes which they never did before. Almost 100,000 new IRS agents to go after seniors? It is a total cluster of f__k and the only thing important to Joe is bringing more invaders in and spending weekends at his ill-gotten beach house. I can see a rise in hopelessness with all these factors.

Yup. The original Ghostbusters was a hit because fundamentally it's about three unemployable slackers who lose their cushy university position and have to start a blue-collar pest control business to eat. As a result of doing hard, messy, necessary work they gain an appreciation for the value of hard, messy, necessary work, to the point that all of them are willing to sacrifice themselves for something bigger than they are. It is a quintessentially men's movie.

Every movie since, from II to 2016, has been aimed at women. And it looks like Frozen Empire is going to go the same way.
