This painting is aggressively meh. I like the skylight. My attention is attracted to the two guys walking off towards the right. From the Tate Gallery's website:
"This painting was inspired by an arcade in Paris which had been the subject of a long essay by the Surrealist writer Louis Aragon. Maddox later wrote, 'Aragon points out that his wanderings around the Passage de l'Opéra were without purpose, yet he waited for something to happen, something strange or abnormal, so as to permit him a glimpse of a new order of things. Such experiences ... were conducive to Surrealism's attraction to the marvellous.' Maddox painted this scene from memory in England, and based the lion on a sculpture at Montparnasse cemetery." This has a rather cold, distant effect to it. Partly because the arcade is mostly empty; partly because the patron or civil servant and the guy up the walkway are still wearing their hats and coats, and the lion has a robe or cloak too.
When I first looked at the painting, I thought the panels on the right, where we see the two suited men walking, were glass or plexiglas. Enlarging the thing, I wonder if the lines might be wires with no glass between; there's no hint of reflection or refraction. But then the winter weather would sweep right in. Perspective
Passage de l’Opéra is a stark depiction of perspective in art. The viewer's eye is drawn along the passageway as parallel structures such as ceilings, walls and floors are depicted by converging lines. As the viewers eye traverse the floor into the distance he can see where the floor transitions from a highly polished surface to bare wood. It is as if the floor polisher's union had called for a walkout, and the crew simply disappeared. This is what we in the art world call the varnishing point Posted by: Muldoon at March 18, 2024 09:46 AM (991eG) 84

I've never found the bowler hat or derby to be an attractive chapeau. It was very popular out West, I've read, in the 19th Century, and in England and the northeast cities in America even into the 20th. In The Apartment, Jack Lemmon's C.C. Baxter buys one, dubbed "The Young Executive Model," after Fred MacMurray's Jeff Sheldrake taps him for promotion. But he looks like a dweeb in it.

I’m pretty sure nobody actually likes the opera.
Posted by: Montec at March 18, 2024 09:47 AM (bWsRe) Frasier liked the opera. The best episode was when his dad pretended to be a sodomite to get out of having to date some old opera battleaxe only to be turned out as a "date" for an opera fag. His dad told Frasier he would "Gay It Up" for Frasier's love interest. Hilarious. Posted by: Hairyback Guy at March 18, 2024 09:57 AM (MHhQj) 135

The Sierra's got a wintery March intro but it's 70's again and that stuff is melting fast as usual. I get to see the Of Oroville Dam spillway and you can gauge the melt by how much they dump from the lake. All that waterpower is wasted electric potential energy. It's crazy they didn't let it turn a turbine.

Considering when the artist was working, 1930s and later, I wonder if this is the kind of 'modernist' stuff that CS Lewis and Tolkien so despised. Can't say I blame them. However the vast majority of people finance car purchases. And given interest rates are higher, that 1-2% is more than offset by the extra interest paid due to higher interest rates. Yet curiously, nobody in the media ever points this out. Posted by: Montec at March 18, 2024 10:05 AM (bWsRe) 177
Upstream from Oroville Dam are 700 MW potential energy PG&E dams stairstepped on the Feather River in a series of impoundments built in the 1920/30's. They fill and drain each other, the high impoundment is Antelope Lake at 7200'.

And even the 1-2% decrease is misleading. That’s an average and as anyone knows averages can be skewed by extreme numbers.
In 2021 and 2022 high end cars got retarded expensive. Some were going for $50k over MSRP. That’s all gone now. And that $50k drop in price on a $250k car is counted in the price decline. But a $30k Toyota Camry msrp increased in price by $500. That kind of thing. This has become a real problem with home ownership as well. Due to Bidenflation home prices are up but also financing rates are WAY up. So the person that wanted to buy a starter home and could in the Trump years can't buy one now because salaries are way down compared to inflation, but ALSO the person wanting to sell a house has a problem because they are going to have to dump a 3% mortgage for a 6+% one. Because - get this - there is no middle class as we know it here anywhere else the world. Everywhere else - and I do mean everywhere else - it is simply not allowed for a tradesman to make more than the college educated. Now, mind you, that tradesman will be 100% employed. Yeah. But to acknowledge it - and for cryin' out loud, talk about it in public, makes one a communist or something. This is what the Left has done, so incredibly well. They've indoctrinated a not small group on the right into reflexively arguing that the left's methods simply don't ... and can't ... exist. There can't be a political class looking to use politics in order to simply deny the middle class economic access. Why, to even suggest such a thing makes one a Marxist.
